Why We Are Losing And Will Continue To Lose

I came across this posting by Daniel Foster at NRO, under the heading “Coburn Class”:

“Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.) defended House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from personal attacks at a town hall in Oklahoma:

“While discussing his policy disagreements with Pelosi, Coburn said “she’s a nice lady,” which brought hisses and hoots from the crowd.

“Said Coburn: ‘Come on now. She is nice — how many of you all have met her? She’s a nice person. Just because somebody disagrees with you doesn’t mean they’re not a good person… So don’t catch yourself being biased by Fox News that somebody is no good. The people in Washington are good. They just don’t know what they don’t know.’

“Coburn also has an unlikely friendship with President Obama.”

If this is how one of our Republican leaders in the Senate views Nancy Pelosi, then I believe we are in deep trouble, whether or not Republicans regain the majority in an election cycle or two.  After the crooked dealings that Nancy, Harry and Barak engaged in to enact this health care abomination, Nancy’s labeling of Obamacare opponents as “un-American,” Nancy’s lying about briefings she received on CIA interrogation tactics — not to mention Nancy’s support, as a Catholic grandmother, of partial-birth abortion and taxpayer-funded abortions — I would have expected Senator Coburn would see Nancy in a slightly less benign aspect than as a “nice lady.”   That isn’t exactly the way nice ladies are supposed to act.

Further, the above link quotes Coburn as saying the following about Barak Obama:

“I try to write him about every week or two. Write him a note, encourage him. No one has a tougher job than he does… We came into the Senate together, and I just have a lot of admiration for him. I’m 180 degrees from him on policy on most issues. But I think he’s a wonderful man.”

Senator Coburn appears to be of the “collegiality” class of Republicans, and nothing in the last year and a half has phased him.  No matter how terrifying your opponents’ goals are, no matter what deceptions they engage in, no matter what lies and slanders they utter along the way, they are still wonderful men and nice ladies whom you deeply admire, and let’s not let a trivial little dispute over our American way of life get in the way of all that necessary after-hours back-slapping.

I am all for Republicans practicing Christian charity towards Democrats.  However, after all that’s happened, and in light of the dire state the country is in, I do expect Republicans to view Democrats realistically, both in terms of their policies and their character.  This is not a game of cricket (and even at that, a game of cricket where your opponent repeatedly kicked you in the kneecaps to win), where it doesn’t matter who wins or loses as long as we can share a glass of port together in the clubhouse afterward.  This is the long, twilight struggle for the heart and sole of our country, and we are losing, and losing badly, to dishonorable people with dishonorable intentions.  This is not a disagreement over Diet Coke versus Diet Pepsi, this is a disagreement over right and wrong, liberty versus tyranny, justice versus injustice, honor versus dishonor.  And our Republican leaders can’t even muster a righteous indignation over what’s happening, but instead think that we’re just dealing with a nice lady and a wonderful man.

It is also disturbing that this behavior by Senator Coburn in praised by a writer for the premier conservative websites in America.  Conservative pundits should be expecting Republican leaders to be resisting Democrats with more spirited rhetorical weapons than over-the-top flattery.

I would be amazed if leaders showing the “class” of Senator Coburn will ever muster the willpower to overturn Obamacare.  More probable will be a polite, perfunctory attempt to repeal, followed by endless savage attacks from fine ladies and wonderful men, a totally dumbfounded, deer-in-the-headlights response from Republican politicians who can’t believe their friends would turn on them in this way, quickly to be followed by a hasty Republican retreat, and another round of praise by Republicans for their fine Democratic brethren.

I guess Coburn is hedging his bets...

He wants to be a prison guard – not a prisoner.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Politicans Not Acting The Way You Want Them To? No, I'm Shocked.

GJ Merits (Diary) Wednesday, April 7th at 11:23AM EST (link)

So what’s it going to take folks, for us to realize finally that our salvation does not rely on politicians? What?!

I have written about the issue until my fingers are tired and still everybody is hanging our future on repeal. I don’t give one whit who you get elected at the local level or how many of us join committee precincts, the end result is that politicians are politicians. It. Is. That. Easy.

Thomas Jefferson sums it up rather nicely: “The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and for government to gain ground.”

Jeez, that sounds familiar. As government is made up of – you guessed it – politicians, Jefferson’s observation is really a rather obvious fact about human nature.

Politicians are not going to save you. Neither are the courts. You have a better chance of having the tooth fairy sweep in and rescue the day. Ain’t gonna happen.

The states are not going to save us with nullification. It is up to us. A little civil disobedience can go a long way. I have written about it. Hot Air has an article about how the IRS says while it can’t enforce the mandate, it can withhold your refund. How does the post end? By stating that you should ensure you don’t have a refund. How do you do that? By increasing your exemptions on your W-4 or paying less in quarterly taxes if you are self-employed. No employment mechanism means the insurance companies will now get behind a repeal effort. Sounds like civil disobedience to me. Does doing that scare anyone?

http://hotair.com/archives/2010/04/06/irs-you-bet-we-can-enforce-this-mandate/

Other civil disobedience measures are also possible and I have outlined some of them here in my diaries. If we don’t do it, it is not going to get done. If the men are so emasculated that a little non-violent disobedience, as opposed to what our founders and grandfathers went through, is so scary, then we are in trouble – big trouble. Man up. If is YOUR country – not theirs. The power to end this within the next month is here if we had the will, but it is starting to look like we don’t.

You get the government you deserve. When all three branches of government are against you and will continue to be even when “your” people are in power then political solutions, as they are called here, are not worth their weight in beetle dung unless backed up by an assertive and non-violent movement where the people make it clear we won’t stand for this nonsense anymore.

It’s very telling when I get more response on Tea Party sites from women than I do men by four to one. I guess I am beginning to see who owns the testicles now. The men are acting like I am calling for Armageddon or something, as if what MLK and Gandhi is somehow spooky and taboo. Jeez.

Respectfully, what you are putting on full display here is how two-faced a politician can be. I will be you a paycheck Coburn worked this strategy out in his head. Let’s get me on camera looking tough.

Now it’s back to politics as usual. These people don’t do anything that is not self-serving. It is their nature. I was very happy when I saw the above video before the vote. But I knew in the back of my mind that it was all for show. Even if he follows through with it, it is still all for show. This is no longer just jaded thinking by me, I have seen these guys in full self-interest regalia last year when I was part of a small group of people who exposed every single Senator (except DeMint) as being spineless twits. That’s 40 out of 41 Senators, and Coburn was one who was supposed to hold down the fort when DeMint had some sort of emergency he needed to take care of.

It came as no surprise that he was out of action when we needed him most. Nope, this guy is through and through a politician. Weak, two-faced, and elitist.

Anybody who had anything good to say about Nancy Pelosi is falling into the comity trap that guys like Mr. “I was a maverick but now I’m not” McCain did – and they need to have their head examined. She is an enemy of this country and everything it stands for. The only thing we get out of such nonsense is bi-partisan growth of government.

Don’t count on these guys. They will let you down every single time.

For heaven’s sakes, it was a couple of remarks at a town hall . . . remarks which Coburn prefaced by saying he was against all of Pelosi’s agenda.

I wouldn’t have said it but I am not willing to kick a starter off the squad.

This civil disobedience you keep promoting won’t mean squat unless we have enough politicians on our side to codify what we believe in.

I understand the anger that’s out there, but let’s not eat our own.

Watch him over the coming months and see where he lands on many issues or what excuses he comes up with to back down. It will happen.

Coburn joined 39 other Senators and backed down from obstruction via the removal of unanimous consent during the Senate healthcare votes last year leading up to the final vote. Why did he back down? Two reasons. One, Dick Durbin told the Republicans he would keep them there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week right up and past Christmas. Our little group ran an email buy titled “Vacation Over Country” that lead to Steele’s memo to the Senate GOP to start obstructing. Instead, they went on the Sunday circuit and defended their actions.

Second, I uncovered an obscure story that talked about a Cornyn memo that described the Republican GOPs decision to sit back while appearing to fight ObamaCare and allow it to pass. Why? For an increase in mid-term gains. A second email buy was run that exposed this tactic.

During this time two very big hitters got involved in the game. One is Erick Erickson himself who wrote a piece titled “Fight” that outlined the strategy to defeat ObamaCare and exposed McConnell and the leadership for the wimps they are. The other was Rush Limbaugh. After these two starting the pounding, the strategy was changed to obstruct. It took a major operation by four organizations (Social Security Institute, Gun Owners of America, National Tax Limitation Committee, and Tea Party Support), and the persons of Erick and Rush to get this done. All 40 Republicans in the Senate joined Jim DeMint and began to obstruct.

Given the above, who do you think the real Coburn is? The guy who joined with 40 other Republicans left Jim DeMint hanging until an barrage of pressure and resources was brought to bear upon him? The guy who is now complementing Pelosi? Or the guy who suddenly seems to have found his stones and decided to look tough for the cameras for a few minutes?

Trust, but verify. The verification fails in this case.

We will see just how serious the GOP in the Senate and House is about repealing ObamaCare. Repeal is out in 2010 and 2011 for obvious reasons, but the House can defund it. Let’s watch and see if they will. My money is they will not and the excuses will fly.

And is 2013, if we still have control over both chambers and gain control of the executive, let’s see if it will be repealed. My money is on it not being repealed.

Civil disobedience does not require politicians to be on our side personally. They only have to appear to be on our side. As they are politicians and given the above narrative, it should be clear that by this I mean that if it is in their best interests to appear to be on our side, they will do so. So we must make it in their best interests. Raise awareness, get the public on our side, and anybody in a Red or Purple state who does not outwardly support us with actions and words will lose their seat. It is all about appearances with these guys. Did you read Dr. Hunter’s piece about how the DC political class actually works? It really puts things in perspective. Read his bio before reading the piece so you get to know his lengthy resume and see where he is coming from. He is a strategist of the highest caliber.

I do not like her

tecash (Diary) Wednesday, April 7th at 1:03AM EST (link)

but that does not mean Colburn or any other republicans need to act like the dems and trash their opponents. We can win even while taking the high ground. We can win based on issues, not on trashing or agreeing with the trashing of the dems. I do not know much about his politics, but i have no issues with him not hating her or even liking her outside of politics.

but calling them ‘friends’ or even ‘nice people’ IS off-putting.

Is Mao also a friend? How about Stalin?
Is Che a ‘nice person’?

I understand your point

tecash (Diary) Wednesday, April 7th at 1:55PM EST (link)

and as soon as Pelosi, Reid, or Obama start killing millions, he better never call her a nice person or a friend or we shoudl reconsider his loyalties. Most of us on here have friends or family that agree with the Obama doctrine, have you cut them out of your life and made it clear they are lowlifes? If you have, there may be a need for some physc care needed as a person can be a friendly or good person who just has crappy politics. The same applies to our reps. Friendship is seperate from politics,

Want to know what our problem is? The high ground is an illusion. It is created by the mind and does not exist in nature. It is a by-product of living in a civilized society where you don’t have to worry about your next meal, or disease, or being killed on a daily basis. If that society collapses, so does your conceptual creation of the term “high ground”. Go live in Somalia for awhile and get back to me on how well your “high ground” worked out for you.

It is these “creations” of the mind that weaken the leaders in our own party and leads to rather unhealthy behavior for this country. It leads to an outreach to a group of people who are enemies of liberty and freedom. It leads to wobbly approaches and excuse making along the lines of “we don’t want to be seen as the party of no”, even when evidence that a generic Tea Party candidate out-polls a Republican, and who screams “No” louder and more often than the Tea Parties?

Want to lose this country? Keep relying on that “high ground” and “we’re better than that” attitude. Keep cutting yourself off at the knees and limiting your rules of engagement with ephemeral creations of the mind while your opposition metaphorically spits in your face on a daily basis and strategizes circles around you because they know you are hypnotized by your feelings of moral superiority and love gazing at yourself in the mirror in admiration at what a great person you are. McCain does it on a daily basis and he has plenty of company.

Want to win? Get down in the mud where they are and fight as if your life depends on it – because it does.

Your argument does not apply

tecash (Diary) Wednesday, April 7th at 1:49PM EST (link)

because if we were in somalia, the type of discord would be much different than what we have here in politics.

In the Election between Bush and Gore, a poll was taken about the constant negative or attack adds. Both side lost votes because of the disgust of people concerning these adds. Had either side simply stuck to facts and let the other side act stupid, their stature would have been elevated.

Let me put it this way. I have a dear friend who for some reason is a liberal who supports all things Obama. We get into heated debates over issues. He has a tendency to start using words like stupid, idiot, dumbass, etc when he begins to lose the debate or can not explain how he is right. As angry as i get, I refuse to lower to his level and not only has it allowed me to keep my high ground, it has helped me convince others who have listened in that my side is right and most of all, it has preserved my friendship with him that has lasted 25 years.

You argument is absurd. There is a huge difference between not getting into dirty politics and compromise as you illustrated with Mccain. There is no comparison and you know it. I do not have to verbally attack my friend to keep our politics and my stances seperate. That argument from you holds no merit. Civility and compromise are two worlds apart and have no bearing on this issue.

It is plain stupid to argue somehow a conservative can only be a conservative if they hate the other side, involve themselves in the dirty politics as much if not more than the other side, and do not make themselves into asses. A person can like people from the other side without compromising their convictions and can refrain from ignorance without compromising their convictions. And guess what, a person can like Pelosi or Obama the person without liking, agreeing, or giving into the politics of that person.

So try to understand this, it may serve you and others well in the future. A person (conservative) can stand strong and make tremendous changes in this country without acting like children, without compromising morals and values, can like the person, can refrain from childish schoolyard name calling, can rise above the stupidity and still be strong and uncompromising.

Not one thing is ever gained from personal attacks, but worlds are gained from simply standing for principles, period!

Hate to break it to you, repubs have been calling dems names for years and have still compromised everything. Thats the reason we have Obama and his minions. Acting the asses part does not impress anyone and it does not mean they will not compromise. In fact it is a waste of time and ignorant. I and so many others could care less if our reps like people on the other side, we could care less whether they ever get down in the mud and act as stupid as the left, what we care about is if they consistently stand up for what is right, plain and simple.

If slinging mud and name calling is what you deem as proper and proof that a repub is standing in the gap for you, then you probally like many of the bums we have in office now. The rest of us will look not for the ones who “hate” the other side or sling mud, we will look for the ones who vote the way we voted them in to do.

Only the weak accept abuse, the strong give it back 10 fold. I may not have much in this life, but I do have a good eye, steady aim, and ample strength to pull a trigger. Bring your abuse on. I am not talking about name-calling, but getting in the trenches with your opponents. Orrin Hatch warned of war: empty rhetoric. I have yet to see it. Have you witnessed any such thing?

The moral high ground is what got us where we are. How many times has Rush said Democrats are willing to do what we will not. I don’t know about you, but if I am in a fight, I don’t want one or both hands tied behind my back by some conceptual framework that only exists because I live in a society where it can. It is a figment of our imagination and frankly it is stopping us from getting the job done. ObamaCare should never have passed. It was our battle to lose, not theirs to win. Read my response to TexasGalt above and you will see where I am coming from.

What I did not mention in that response was the very strategy that worked last year would have worked this year, but McConnell and company, in the interests of not wanting to appear obstructionist, sold us out. Read the piece I link to written by Dr. Larry Hunter. Then you will understand what I am saying. If you insist on hamstringing yourself before the bell for round one rings, then you are already at a disadvantage.

I agree

tecash (Diary) Wednesday, April 7th at 4:39PM EST (link)

that rhetoric has grown old. I also agree with you that it is time for our reps to get angry and go on the offensive. I would also agree that many in our party are too willing to compromise. That is why we need to get rid of them just as badly as the dems. I think we are on the same page that stooping to hate or personal attacks is not needed to make changes, action is.

I forgot to add

tecash (Diary) Wednesday, April 7th at 4:55PM EST (link)

I understand what you mean and agree with you. I just think you are confusing the high ground with compromise. Let me give an example:

Christ met and ate with tax collectors. These were men who betrayed their own people and “legally’ robbed them all to convey special treatment from the Romans. These were despicable people who were despised by their own. Most wanted them killed for what they did, Christ made it clear that he loved them and that we were all equally sinfull. But he did not compromise his law and made it clear to them to cease what they were doing and return all the money they had stolen multifold. One bacame one of his greatest followers.

I agree with you and understand what you mean. But I have to state again, there is a huge difference between staying above the BS or the stay on the “high ground” and selling out through compromise or doing nothing at all.

Only the weak accept abuse, the strong give it back 10 fold. I may not have much in this life, but I do have a good eye, steady aim, and ample strength to pull a trigger. Bring your abuse on. I love this country, love the people in this country, and respect the right to life. But if you desire to forfeit your right to live, threaten my rights, my dignity, or myself or my families wellbeing and I will be more than happy to help you end your life with plenty of Vitamin bullet.
