Rob Jesmer: Super Tuesday’s Super Loser

So top NRSC strategist Rob Jesmer, who gave us the Charlie Crist debacle and backed Bob Bennett in Utah, had another banner day on Super Tuesday’s primary contests. The two candidates he fought to get the NRSC to back suffered embarrassing defeats (Arlen Specter & Trey Grayson) , and the two candidates he tried to destroy (Pat Toomey & Rand Paul) cake-walked into big victories.

Jesmer got NRSC’s John Cornyn to go all-in for Specter last year. A few weeks later, Specter repaid Jesmer’s confidence in him by switching parties and went on to support Obamacare. Yet, not even the Democrats could stomach Snarlin’ Arlen’s crass opportunism. Conservatives knew Specter was untrustworthy for years, but the DC GOP strategists like Jesmer kept telling us Arlen was the best we could ever hope for.

Well, the voters disagreed with Jesmer and instead voted overwhelmingly for conservative Pat Toomey who ran on commonsense solutions and an end to the bailouts, takeovers, wasteful spending and runaway debt. Toomey is the clear favorite against liberal Joe Sestak in the fall. Sestak’s support of Obama’s government takeover of health care, failed stimulus, higher taxes, and wasteful earmarks will not wear well with Pennsylvanians.

Jesmer got the NRSC to help push consistent conservative Jim Bunning out of the race. Then, Jesmer got NRSC and Washington insiders to fundraise for Trey Grayson against tea party favorite Rand Paul in Kentucky. The establishment-picked Grayson ran against balanced budgets, for earmarks, and for federal control of education. The GOP establishment pulled every trick they could to stop Paul, even lying to Dr. James Dobson. Well, Kentucky voters gave a big “hell, no!” to Grayson. Rand Paul’s huge win was a blow to Jesmer’s goal of electing moderate Republican who will fall in line to the marching orders of DC GOP strategists. Rand will instead follow the Constitution and the principles our nation was founded on, which probably are radical ideas to beltway insiders.

So far, Jesmer’s picks of Crist, Specter, Grayson, and Bennett have all tanked. How’s his other Washington-backed picks doing? Jane Norton couldn’t even make the GOP nominating convention, and is losing to tea party backed Buck in Colorado. Despite money and name ID, Carly Fiorina is floundering in California. Sue Lowden is now the butt of jokes nationwide and may soon be overtaken by tea party favorite Sharron Angle in the polls.

Republican grassroots have been told for years we had to settle for RINOs, but now we know better. Conservatives have stood up and fought back, and now we have a chance to put freedom fighters like Marco Rubio, Pat Toomey, and Rand Paul in the Senate.

Now is the time to fight back even harder. If conservatives continue this momentum nationwide, we can add freedom fighters Ken Buck, Mike Lee, Sharron Angle, Chuck DeVore, Christine O’Donnell, and Ovide LaMontagne to that list. Some of these candidates are winning and others haven’t broken out yet. But all of them are strong conservatives that can win in November if we unite and help them win their primaries now.

Don’t settle for Jesmer’s stale establishment vision of the GOP in 2010. Elect freedom fighters.

What’s Palin’s record in terms of backing winners?

I have a sense that she might be a kingmaker in 2010 and possibly in 2012.

Of course, Erick Erickson’s influence can hardly be underestimated either.

with one point you make. Toomey is not a “clear favorite” in the PA race. A few pre-primary polls have Toomey with a small lead in a hypothetical matchup against Sestak, but this is Pennsylvania we’re talking about. A Republican running state wide starts off at a disadvantage, even in a good Republican year (which 2010 looks like it’s shaping up to be).

PA goes blue when us Rednecks ain't riled up.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 12:39PM EST (link)

This is a year when we are. Not only that, those durn retired geezers are riled up about Obamacare and worried about what TARP means to their grandkids.

Historically PA was a decent gauge for what would happen nationally because the inner Red areas balanced the Blue cities of Philly and Pittsburgh. It’s been trending a bit bluer as it chased jobs away, and with the moderate W in the Whitehouse and the DC elite backing RINOs like Specter there wasn’t much reason for conservatives to turn out. McCain made it worse, but those of us who were really conservative held our noses and voted for him. Toomy is no RINO, and the socialists control DC. This year the conservatives will turn out. Probably the moderates too. Especially as the real economy continues to list or decline. Voter define the real economy by whether or not they have a job. Those numbers are getting worse, not better.

just stating facts. Toomey is not a “clear favorite” in the race. I’d characterize the race as a toss up (for a lot of the reasons you set forth in your post).

fc99, that's the fighting spirit!

jobresmer (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 12:52PM EST (link)

Maybe we should have bribed Specter to stay in the GOP, he’d be a sure-fire winner!

I wasn't...

ffc99 Wednesday, May 19th at 1:11PM EST (link)

saying anything about Specter. Simply pointing out the fact that this will be a very tough race (as all races in PA are for Republicans). If you seriously think Toomey is a clear favorite, I’d really like to get my hands on a little of what you’re smoking.

Are These Candidates W/in Reach?

Good_Captain Wednesday, May 19th at 11:50AM EST (link)

I absolutely support these conservatives but I also wish to use my own resources judiciously. I haven’t heard of the conservatives you mention before for the NH and DE seat. Are either of these candidates w/in striking distance and if they are, can they really overcome the DEMS in blue states? I sent $500 to Burns in PA and just got shot down. I am not anxious to repeat the experience.

is not a serious candidate. She has no chance to win the primary, and more importantly, would be a disaster in the general.

A well-spoken, young, principled, attractive conservative female candidate would be a disaster?

1) Delaware is not a state that would be friendly to a candidate like O’Donnell who comes from the social conservative wing of the party.

2) Take a look at Ms. O’Donnell’s personal history. She seems to have a real problem handling her personal and campaign finances. Not sure that a person like that is face that the Republican party

wants to put forward in this election.

Are you incapable of using google or wiki?

It’s all out there if you care to educate yourself.

I can use both wiki and google...

But I am not the guy making an assertion without providing evidence to support that assertion.

If you don’t want to provide a specific link that if fine, it’s just also noted.

Ok, try a link that is actually functional.

Wikipedia as a source?

nepanyrush Thursday, May 20th at 10:33AM EST (link)

Wikipedia is controlled by a gangle of liberal activists on any topic of political or social interest. I hold a Ph.D. and I tried to fix errors many times in terms of articles on John Edwards, our “School Czar,” intelligent design, global warming, various Republicans who were being denigrated by smears, some organizations that were being wrongly besmirched, etc., but the liberals kept reverting the pages. They also told me that the Washington Times and Fox News were not valid sources for information. It had to be the NYT, etc. Please do not consider anything on Wikipedia at face value.

Thanks for stating...

ffc99 Thursday, May 20th at 12:56PM EST (link)

the obvious. I think most people realize wiki should be used with care. However, wiki certainly has its uses. It usually provides links to primary sources, as in this case (which allowed me to read the articles from Delaware/MD news sources).

It is painful to send $$$ to a non-winning candidate BUT...

zollistar (Diary) Wednesday, May 19th at 2:11PM EST (link)

…it is unwise to allow a single failure to stop you from making future donations.

In addition to sending money to non-winners, I’ve also made get-out-the-vote phone calls on their behalves. So I “invested” time AND money in our people.

Do the losses bother me? Well, obviously I’d prefer the alternative, but I think about it this way: Just as in investing, I don’t put all my money in a single investment, neither do I put all my money (and time) into a single candidate. I diversify, knowing that some will win but not all will win.

To be sure, I try to be judicious in my “investment” picks. (Thanks Erick for pointing them out.) Still, I think even a “loss” isn’t necessarily a loss.

Example: Marlin Stutzman in Indiana. He came in second (and I made get-out-the-vote calls on his behalf) but now people have heard about him. He might be a winning candidate later BECAUSE Hoosiers have heard about him — a few of them people whom I personally called and spoke to (or for whom I left phone messages). So you might say I “bought” early and have to wait for a pay-off that I hope will come. But sometimes I also buy a company’s stock too early; there, too, I have to wait.

I’ll close with this observation: Diversification and patience are the watchwords for investing for the future. This guideline applies whether one invests in companies — or in candidates.

But we gotta start by making the investments.
