So, here’s the rub from the UK Telegraph:
In London, Gen McChrystal, who heads the 68,000 US troops in Afghanistan as well as the 100,000 Nato forces, flatly rejected proposals to switch to a strategy more reliant on drone missile strikes and special forces operations against al-Qaeda.
He told the Institute of International and Strategic Studies that the formula, which is favoured by Vice-President Joe Biden, would lead to “Chaos-istan”.
When asked whether he would support it, he said: “The short answer is: No.”He went on to say: “Waiting does not prolong a favorable outcome. This effort will not remain winnable indefinitely, and nor will public support.”
Apparently McChrystal pulling rank on Obama didn’t go over so well with the talking heads at the White House.
The remarks have been seen by some in the Obama administration as a barbed reference to the slow pace of debate within the White House.
Nice to see that “some in the Obama administration” are able to grasp the obvious.
Gen McChrystal delivered a report on Afghanistan requested by the president on Aug 31, but Mr Obama held only his second “principals meeting” on the issue last week.
He will hold at least one more this week, but a decision on how far to follow Gen McChrystal’s recommendation to send 40,000 more US troops will not be made for several weeks.
A military expert said: “They still have working relationship but all in all it’s not great for now.”
That might be because McChrystal, the man in charge of keeping the free world safe, has dutifully asked his commander in chief for permission to win and all he’s getting is a back seat to Obama’s PR schedule.
But it gets better:
Some commentators regarded the general’s London comments as verging on insubordination.
FYI, ‘commentator’ as defined in the Leftist Media Lexicon (LML) is: “Any random person who acts as an armchair expert on a subject he knows nothing about. Can be a tenured news anchor, Hollywood activist, or the poor disgruntled schlub writing the story. Commentators need no credentials because that would require ‘vetting’, and, according to the LML, vetting is, “not practiced on members of the media or anyone the media proclaims is a commentator”.
Oftentimes, the ‘commentator’ is someone from the academic world:
Bruce Ackerman, an expert on constitutional law at Yale University, said in the Washington Post: “As commanding general, McChrystal has no business making such public pronouncements.”
Constitutional and lawyer…now there’s an oxymoron. Given the Left’s propensity for getting really credible ‘commentators’, I highly suspect Mr. Ackerman also thinks the Constitution implicitly states a president can take over the private sector.
Relations between the general and the White House began to sour when his report, which painted a grim picture of the allied mission in Afghanistan, was leaked. White House aides have since briefed against the general’s recommendations.
Now, here’s some hubris: The White House briefed “against the general’s recommendations”.
Which leads us to this question: Just who is more qualified to call the shots in Afghanistan, the general who is actually in Afghanistan, or our spoiled, man-child president who was stupid enough to use his outside voice when he said, “I’m not interested in victory”?
This question can only be answered by a comparison of the two men.
May I present Barack Obama and General McChrystal.

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, October 6th at 2:11AM EST (link)You really highlight the difference in a few, well chosen words.
Though if Obama has his way, I fear similar future photos of McChrystal’s world will likely be taken in the U.S., not Afghanistan.
In a nutshell, your message was those photos contrasting McChrystal’s enemy vs. Obama’s.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

It does verge on insubordination, but then
The_Gadfly (Diary) Tuesday, October 6th at 6:03AM EST (link)‘speaking truth to power’ frequently does that, and being able to do so effectively requires politic judgment so as not to cross over the line into actual insubordination.

redneck_hippie (Diary) Tuesday, October 6th at 9:22PM EST (link)The last thing I read yesterday was a quote that is pertinent vis a vis General McChrystal’s courage in speaking truth to power regarding his recommendation for additional Afghanistan troops. The quote is from the First Sea Lord, Admiral Fisher who was upset about John R. Jellicoe’s failure to take the opportunity offered to the English to destroy the German fleet after the Battle of Jutland in WWI. Admiral Fisher said of Jellicoe: ” He has all Nelson’s qualities but one: he doesn’t know how to disobey!”
General McChrystal shows he does know how to act outside the chains (yes, I meant to make it plural) of command.
There comes a time when insubordination is duty.
clowngirl (Diary) Wednesday, October 7th at 12:04AM EST (link)McChrystal’s duty is to his country and his men, not to the ******* in the Whitehouse. It’s unbelievable that General McChrystal is urgently asking for more troops Obama is completely blowing him off and yet half of America is ok with it. People may have differing opinions about the war and what should be done but, one would think (obviously erroneously) that there would at least be almost unanimous agreement that the role of Commander in Chief is a rather important job. It would seem to be beyond disputing that vital questions of war should take precedence over sports but obviously not in the mind of the left.
When our top commander says we desperately need more troops and that we’re facing a crisis which imperils not only the 68,000 men and women who are risking their lives in service to our country right now in Afghanistan but whole chance of winning the war and stabilizing the region could slip away if we don’t act very soon – I can understand liberals not being automatically convinced- but I really cannot understand how they condone Obama giving the question no serious attention.
I just checked out “Hopes and Dreams:The Story of Barack Obama” (along with “Liberal Fascism” any librarian who looked at my account would surely be baffled) I got it for the pictures – but have been disturbed to see THAT’S PRACTICALLY ALL THAT’S IN IT. This thing has more pictures than pages. it’s apparently intended for adults and is making the case for why Obama should be President. Some excerpts:
” I don’t want to wait till he is ready” said the screenwriter whose films “Sleepless in Seattle” and “When Harry Met Sally” demonstrated her acute sense of the zeitgeist. “I’m ready for Barack Obama. I dont’ think we have six years to wait for him, because things are going to hell in a handbasket.”
“If you were my husband, I wouldn’t let you go out alone.” _ Female guest at an Illinois Dental Society Dinner (that one was one they chose to blow up to highlight Obama’s ability to inspire some liberal women to have the hots for him. I haven’t read “Going Rogue” yet but I’d be disappointed if there’s a chapter suggesting the former Governor’s sex appeal is a qualification for her to be POTUS)
Also blown up (all from Obama):
“I’m not opposed to all wars. I’m opposed to dumb wars.”(does this really pass as some brilliant analysis with liberals)
“I’m not sure anybody is ready to be President before they’re President” -
“Our individual salvation depends upon our collective salvation”
Other pearls of wisdom and stunning insights:
“I’d want to be a really great president, you know? …Because there are a lot of mediocre or poor presidents”
“if there’ s a child on the South Side of Chicago that can’t read, that makes a difference in my life, even if it’s not my child”
“take a leap of faith with me”
Has America really gotten this dumbed down? Apparently.
The lack of substance, the extraordinarily superficial focus, the simplistic naivete, etc. all would be a little less disturbing if it had been in the children’s section but it’s being presented as serious political discourse. According to the back cover “essential reading for those curious to know about the man being talked about as a candidate for our highest office.”
There should be massive, universal outrage at Obama’s failure to show up on this issue – instead his approval rating is actually going back up. (shaking head)
Maybe we need to have the first ever pro-war rally to condemn the way Obama has shirked his responsibility & the efforts to discredit General McChrystal and demand that our troops get the support they need.
It begs the question, which man would you rather follow...

I hate to sound a sour note, but there is something I don't like about your diary
kyle8 (Diary) Friday, October 9th at 6:33PM EST (link)all the comparison pictures, although true, smack of the “Chickenhawk” argument.
It is a bad bad argument. We have had civilian leaders who lead us successfully in major wars including Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, and FDR.
And I can only think of myself. I never served in the military active duty *but have a strong affinity for our soldiers and sailors and I know that if I were president I would be very very careful about sending them into harms way.
* I did attend basic camp at Fort Knox, KY and almost signed up as a butterbar for ROTC. But that was during the Carter era and the moral was very very low. I was disgusted at what I saw, total insubordination, officers getting into fistfights with each other, and lots of dope use. Had I known that Reagan would come in and clean things up and restore pride I would have signed up.
“Nothing works like freedom, Nothing succeeds like liberty”
Kyle
Kyle, I think the civilian leaders you mention took the advice of their military leaders...
nessa (Diary) Friday, October 9th at 6:57PM EST (link)Lincoln kept changing leaders till he finally found one with the balls and determination to win. FDR had Marshall, what Marshall did with the Army was phenomenal. Wilson also, had Pershing. What those Presidents provided was commitment, there was speculation after each of the major Union losses about the Union continuing the war, Lincoln never publicly flinched. He even risked his re-election in his dedication to the causes that compelled him to put Union Soldiers in harm’s way. Same with FDR, he never wavered, never suggested he would settle for anything less than Victory. Wilson I don’t know much about, I’ve always seen him as too progressive and never really read up on his history.
Obama is using Afghanistan and our Soldiers as political tools, as he does everything else. Nothing beyond his own gathering of power means anything to him, the policy meetings he has been holding no doubt are more concerned with how he can spin the various COAs to his own benefit. If he thought it would help him pass healthcare he would throw the entire military to the wolves.

I can assure you, there are no chickenhawks here.
My goal is to show that Obama is unfit to lead the military because he’s a dangerous buffoon who would rather pimp the media and hang out at Martha’s Vinyard than show up for work and do his job.
I don’t think prior military service automatically makes for a better president, but acting like the commander in chief and trusting one’s generals does.
