Pence's New Neighbors Welcome Him With Gay Pride Protest, Media Swoons

Vice President-elect Mike Pence is renting a house in Washington, DC until he can move into the Vice President’s residence in January. His new Northwest DC neighbors wasted no time politicizing his presence in their community, and make no mistake, the news media are also his new neighbors. That this tepid little gesture has earned TV coverage says far more about the media than it does about the residents of the Chevy Chase neighborhood. It’s just an excuse to do another story pushing the “Mike Pence hates gay people” narrative.

WUSA-9 calls it “delivering a message of respect.”  CNN reports:

Until he moves into the Naval Observatory after taking office, the vice president-elect is renting a $6,000-a-month home in Chevy Chase, a swanky neighborhood in the Northwest quadrant of the nation’s capital.

Some neighbors have put up rainbow flags since the Indiana governor moved in to protest what they call his anti-gay policy positions. The flag represents a symbol of pride in the LGBT community.

Roughly half-dozen pride flags are outside of homes on the block where Pence lives and neighbors say more are on the way.

“A respectful message showing, in my case, my disagreement with some of his thinking,” Ilse Heintzen told WJLA, a CNN affiliate.

“I have no idea what (the vice president elect) will think about, but I hope he will change his mind,” she added.

Yes. We absolutely want the man who is next in line to be the leader of the free world to change his reasoned opinions because of how six of his temporary neighbors choose to decorate their homes.

Imagine if you will a universe where Hillary Clinton were the incoming Vice President and a few neighbors displayed pictures of Benghazi? Or one where Barack Obama were VP and neighbors displayed Gadsden flags, or worse Molon Labe flags. The narrative would be one of disbelief that people would so disrespect lawfully elected officials out of misogyny or racism. There would be pearl clutching at the thought that the new Vice President’s safety was being threatened because some of these people might be gun owners.

Or it’s also possible that the media would ignore it entirely in order to deprive the protesters publicity for their cause. Media bias doesn’t only manifest itself in how things get reported. Perhaps the worst form of media bias is when the media chooses to ignore stories that don’t fit their agenda.

Think about it. When six residents of a neighborhood where Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly 3 to 1 protest an incoming Republican administration, is it really news? Or just a propaganda opportunity?
