If so, I approve. (Not least of all because they’re probably laughing uproariously at our ignorance of the term! ) Google has very little on the term, at least going by a couple pages of results for “hero image”, but a few URLs support the suggestion:

If you’ve ever done any web design, you sometimes come across the phrase “hero image”. It refers to the image featured most prominently on a page, usually mission statement banners on corporate or college websites. For example:

http://www.med.unc.edu/webguide/policies/hero-graphics

It isn’t universal in usage, but I hear it from time to time. I suspect the new whitehouse.gov people made it the directory name because it’s sort of a nerdy double endtendre.
