I agree with you that the MSM has had a great deal of influence on how recent events were framed. Still, every time I talk about some new story with my friends, the first things we talk about are, "Did you hear that from conservative Fox, liberal MSNBC, super liberal NYT, etc.?" This seems to me to point to an understanding on the part of most citizens that the news has become more and more relative. I believe this progression will continue as the NYT, tribunes, news shows, etc. find they have to compete with a network of instantly available news and they seek their own cult following.

tl;dr: All the major media outlets seem to be choosing sides and this will eventually destroy the illusion of each outlet's journalistic integrity.

Everything said is true with one exception. They are not on a path to irrelevence. They slowly and methodically destroyed George Bush while making Obama look like a Messiah. They tore down Sarah Palin who actually has a record of " Change" . The villified Dick Cheney . They changed American public opinion on so many issues I lost count. I WISH they were irrelevent but they aren't This is a path to the Soviet News Agency TASS

The media did shrug off the accusations when they were first made, despite at least as much evidence as they had for Scooter Libby "outing" Valerie Plame. They didn't jump on the bandwagon until a non-MSM party came up with sufficient evidence to convict Edwards in a fair court, and even then they were slow about it.

<blockquote>
we’ve witnessed a nationwide mainstream media apparatus in fully operational Death Star mode with regard to a vice presidential nominee who made the mistake of simultaneously being the wrong sex, a member in the wrong party, an incredibly popular spouse, and an opponent of the Democratic candidate that media apparatus had decided must, at all costs, become the next President of the United States.
</blockquote>

When cause for suspicion started to appear, the MSM media simply accepted the "No, I didn't" denial of John Edwards.

Outstanding. We must not let up on the so-called "journalists." Your point about j-schools is one I've made repeatedly in comments here.

The costs of production and distribution are too high even for relatively small, local papers. This, coupled with the continued movement to online information sources is quickly thinning the ranks of "journalists". This is good.

Online ad revenue for general advertising, as opposed to search advertising, will never support the salaried infrastucture of a "newsroom". This is a problem.

As such, "news" will be provided to the masses by those who can afford it based upon something other than a cash on cash return on investment. This should prove interesting.
