Random Ruminations on the Third Debate

McCain wins, but doesn't *finish*

Both candidates looked flat to me, though I was clearly being harder on Sen. McCain than several of my colleagues, whose instant messages and emails seem to overwhelmingly support McCain as the sound winner of this go-round.

My thoughts, added as the debate went on, below the fold.

*A friend with the Weekly Standard just instant messaged me the Obama pattern of the evening: “Classic Obama: attack, attack, attack, then complain about negativity.”

That’s been the case all night — and all campaign.

*McCain is really swatting Sen. Obama with Ayers and ACORN; it’s very telling that Obama’s only response to that was to lie about his associations with both.

*I think McCain needed to go harder at Obama on the blatantly misrepresented “tax cuts for 95% of Americans.” As the WSJ pointed out in their masterful (yet brief) takedown of the supposed “tax cut” program being proposed by Obama:

Here’s the political catch. All but the clean car credit would be “refundable,” which is Washington-speak for the fact that you can receive these checks even if you have no income-tax liability. In other words, they are an income transfer — a federal check — from taxpayers to nontaxpayers. Once upon a time we called this “welfare,” or in George McGovern’s 1972 campaign a “Demogrant.” Mr. Obama’s genius is to call it a tax cut.

*Sen. Obama has the very bad habit of giving an “I’m smarter than my stupid, ignorant elders” smirk whenever Sen. McCain is talking. I’ve received enough emails and IMs to this effect that I’m clearly not the only person who has noticed this.

*McCain may not be winning overwhelmingly – nor doing well enough to take the lead outright in this race – but it’s not for a lack of trying. He’s hitting Obama with broadside after broadside.

*It’s good to see Sen. McCain actually taking on the ridiculous idea that Sen. Biden, Sen. Obama’s running mate, is anything remotely resembling an authority on foreign affairs. Against the liberation of Kuwait, for (then against) the Iraq war, then for what McCain correctly called a “cockamamie scheme” to divide Iraq into three unsustainable countries – the latter being, hands down, one of the absolute stupidest suggestions of the entire Iraq conflict.

*Received via instant message:

I love how McCain brings a legal pad with a Sharpie
That is so awesome
Not a pen – a SHARPIE
The stuff he writes is permanent

*McCain just broadsided Obama on never having traveled south of the U.S. border, yet wanting to unilaterally renegotiate free trade agreements with allies like Colombia. Obama responded by talking about the need for organized labor rights, for which McCain hit him with being anti-free trade with an ally, yet pro-meeting without precondition with a self-defined enemy (Hugo Chavez).

Good riposte on that one by McCain; it would have been nice, though, if he could have worked into that response Obama’s unwavering support of Big Labor’s attempt to eliminate the secret ballot from unionization votes via “card check.”

*Talking health care: Obama is as off on this subject as on any; however, the “healthcare for all” catchphrase is just too easy, and sounds too nice to the emotionally driven who simply don’t understand how anything economic works, to be easily rebutted.

That’s one big problem with conservatism: because it’s rooted in rationality and in the real world, it takes time and explanation to communicate, whereas modern liberalism consists largely of irrational appeals to emotion which have no standing in the real world.

*Allowing the ability to purchase health insurance across state lines — which McCain is speaking in favor of now — is one of the biggest steps that, if taken, would reduce the cosst of health coverage and health care nationwide.

*And here it is: businesses “that can afford to pay” (i.e., whosever money he decides he wants) will have to pay into a government program that will provide health coverage for…somebody. Sen. Obama isn’t clear on who, exactly, would be eligible.

*McCain has just riffed spectacularly on the difference between himself (more choice) and “Senator Government–I mean, Senator Obama” (more government) on health care and on pretty much everything else.

*Obama’s use of “you’ll lose employer-funded health care” scare tactics shows that he either doesn’t understand himself, or knows that the rest of America doesn’t understand, that health coverage, even when provided by employers, isn’t funded by those employers. Rather, it is wages paid in the form of a benefit, rather than cash. Ending employer-backed health care could mean higher monetary wages in employees’ pockets, and would absolutely mean more choice in what insurance coverage is purchased.

*And Obama is wrong on Supreme Court Justices. Their job is not to provide justice to Americans — it is, quite simply, to interpret and apply the Constitution, as written.

*More scare tactics from Obama — “Roe v. Wade hangs in the balance”

*Does Sen. Obama really want to go there on Equal Pay for Equal Work, considering his record vs. McCain’s record on the topic?

*Thank goodness McCain is going after Obama on the latter’s pro-abortion extremism.

*It all comes down to sex ed for Obama, who favored sex education for kids from kindergarten up. Is this the “reach across the aisle” and “listen to all points of view” person for whom such besotted individuals as Doug Kmiec and Christopher Buckley have willingly surrendered their dignity and acquired kneepads?

*Good catch again by McCain, highlighting Obama’s use of language to peddle half-and-untruths and liberal talking points, while sounding honest and open-minded.

*Thank goodness Sen. McCain is taking it to Sen. Obama on school choice and vouchers. Obama’s plan can be boiled down to two points: Spend more money, and Fire (after chances to improve) bad teachers. McCain is going in depth about accountability and transparency in addition to funding, and stressing the success of vouchers (case study: Washington, DC) and of competition, which makes everybody better.

*What a nice closing zinger by McCain, pointing out that Sen. Obama is nice enough to acknowledge that vouchers worked wonders in DC, but still opposes them. Shades of his grudging admission about the ‘surge’ in Iraq, but stubborn refusal to say he wouldn’t oppose it again given the chance.

*Obama’s closing statement, summarized: “We can’t afford to allow those nasty Republicans anywhere near Washington. They want to take your money and ruin your lives. Now, let’s all work across the aisle together.”

Like the IM I posted above: “Classic Obama: attack, attack, attack, then complain about negativity,” and call for everybody else to come to his position in the name of “bipartisanship.”

*I have to agree with Charles Krauthammer on the final verdict: McCain won, but he didn’t finish. He landed several jabs and flurries, but always backed off or allowed the subject to change before ever landing a knockout blow.

McCain did well

Finrod (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:05PM EST (link)

He was strong early and through the middle, but didn’t finish strong. But that may be enough to reach the casual voter whose attention span may have waned by that point anyways.

Let’s get down to brass tacks here. How much for the ape?

McCain The Elderstatesman

RevRenzo (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:08PM EST (link)

First point; McCain made some excellent points, as you noted already. I actually applauded him several times. I really liked it when he told Barry that “I am not President Bush…”. McCain did not use the sledge hammer I wish he did, but I also know he is a gentleman. Barry never did rebuke his supporters about the “racist” charges against McCain/Palin. Obama is good at shoveling his “wish list” but, let’s face it, you and I will all be paying through the nose for Obama’s socialist agenda. Secondly; Obama looked arrogant and overly-confident. I am listening to the “panel” on Fox News talking about how “presidential” Obama is. That’s arrogance, people, not presidential. No matter what McCain says or does, the media will not give him a fair assessment. Obama is a radical socialist, friend of terrorists, support of a Kenyan genocidal maniac, abortion advocate and fully incapable of being an effective leader. His is a puppet and nothing more. McCain was the elderstatesman, experienced, strong and ready to lead.

Can I stop being terrified now?

Ben Howe (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:10PM EST (link)

I couldn’t bring myself to watch the debate. I know where they both stand and I just get frustrated watching the debates playing the “who’s gonna gaffe first” game.

Did McCain finally fight? Did he make his point? Is he fighting like a conservative or is he still whimpering like a moderate?

Obama should be easy to beat. Everyone I talk to is acting like Obama becoming president is a forgone conclusion. For those of you who watched….did anything change tonight?

You can always find people to give you the answers that you think reinforce the facts you’ve already decided are true.

Ronald Daniels (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:12PM EST (link)

McCain didn’t finish. By far he was winning the debate, but he failed to land the so called killing blow. I think that may be why so many polling groups are leaning Obama, ie: Luntz, because there was no finality to it. That and Obama really made a comeback with the education topic.

I just remembered a theory that I had in 2000

JSobieski (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:13PM EST (link)

People vote in a President who most addresses the major weakness of the preceding President.

Clinton was a cad whom you wouldn’t trust with your daughter.

Voters go for Bush.

Bush has been an incredibly poor and awkward communicator.

I hope my theory is wrong.

My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

STOP THE MADNESS!

A reduction in the rate of spending increases is NOT a cut!
In-state tuition for illegals is NOT amnesty!
Requiring someone to pay their medical bills is NOT an individual mandate!
Reducing tax rates is NOT a tax increase!

No Foreign Policy

RevRenzo (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:17PM EST (link)

Anyone else notice….not one question of Foreign Policy. Another big liberal moderator, stacking the deck against McCain. Obama is clueless about foreign affairs and McCain is very strong in that discipline. I am really sick of the liberal media. Journalism is dead.

Scare tactics?

I sure hope not scare tactics. I’d like to think that McCain would follow through on his pledge to roll back Roe through his SCOTUS appointments.

Let’s send the Marines to evacuate refugees from Libya and shut down the drug gangs in Mexico–and make the Marine hymn relevant again.

The debate questions where better this time than ANY of the three prior debates

McCain's Problem

dld1717 (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:25PM EST (link)

John McCain needed to get more likable in the campaign and had never been able to do so.

Americans in large part still vote on who they like. They liked Reagan, Clinton, and Bush because they would like to be around them at bar or watching football game and McCain has never appealed there. I don’t think u can fake that either; McCain has many rough exteriors from his military days

I am just down tonight it seems like McCain gave it his all and even Fox commentators seem down

That Ear

antiDave Wednesday, October 15th at 10:26PM EST (link)

Sorry but I fet like obamas ear had to be mentioned, it was truly horrifying.

mclame should have called him out on being all talk. what has he done since being elected.
he’s so generous, made more than 250k, how much did he even give to charity.
also, if his brother can live in a box, he can raise a million for odinga, and get away with 4 votes against infant protections, this man need not worry about highbrow economic or foreign policy issues as possible roadblocks. i’d be more concerned with the accuracy of polling methodology and the words socialism and acorn.

This debate was supposed to be about domestic policy.

CrabCakes (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:27PM EST (link)

The first was supposed to be about foreign policy but was largely hijacked by the first rumblings of the economic crisis.

I am so glad for this board. I had to even shut off Fox News. Everyone is sold out to NObama – they said he looked presidential. He looked like the arrogant, cocky empty suit he is. I thought McCain made great points and won on the points, not on eloquence but points.

If I knew nothing Obama won.

newagegop (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:32PM EST (link)

Since I do understand what’s going on I’m voting for McCain. However truth is not what’s going to determine the President this time because the truth is obscured by McModerate and the Media.

After watching yet another boring debate from McCain I know Palin can and will make a better case for conservatism than McCain ever will. His “strength” of bipartisanship simple blurs the line between liberal vs. conservative governance. In this environment we needed bold broad lines being drawn to hold off a liberal wearing moderate clothing. McCain simply can not do that.

The only President out of the four I truly want is Palin, and I’m voting for her more than McCain.

Palin/Jindal 2012

Agreed, Jeff.

spainishirish (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 10:43PM EST (link)

McCain didn’t follow through, so he didn’t “finish”. “Winning” these bathetic rituals isn’t good enough any longer, and McCain clearly won. You have to produce sound bites for the next 24 hours, and that would have required knocking balls out of the park. There were balls to be knocked, too, but for whatever reason McCain resisted every time Obama threw a low hanging one.

I cannot believe McCain didn’t call Obama on Fannie and Freddie and Barney and Christopher. That would have tied the economic issue to character. McCain started but didn’t go there. I don’t know why; perhaps that is from being in the senate too long to want to go for the jugular. And that is one of many examples of the failure to follow up.

In McCain’s defense, given the incredible and unhidden left-wing media bias this cycle, even if he had produced sound bites there was no certainty they would have been aired as in years past.
In a way, that is the most depressing aspect of this whole race.

If I had young children now, I wouldn’t be sending them to public school. Not with liteture books showcasing Obama and teachers promoting his talking points.

Obama's middle class message sprung a leak

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 11:09PM EST (link)

link

As usual the mainstream media, and that includes Fox News, misses the big story while they act out their roles on “game-changers” and their historically ignorant and discredited “Debate Moment” theory of Presidential election outcomes.

The game changer is not a debate moment. Its that liberals rarely win this game.

But they did manage to miss a major gaffe by Obama and the major message he sent that puts him in the unelectable liberal category.

America saw a man that thinks that plumbers, and, by implication, those small business owners economically equal to and better off than plumbers, should pay higher taxes. That he says 95% of taxpayers will get a tax cut loses its power when middle class people that think themselves akin to plumbers or better off, see that Obama puts them in the 5% that will get a tax hike.

Then, Obama contradicts himself by saying that the plumber is too poor to be subject to a fine for not providing health care. Clearly he was flustered by McCain demanding he state the amount the government would fine small business owners for not buying government prescribed health care for employees.

So, as he often does, when corner like a rat by a cat, Obama lied.

His tax plan and health care plans both consider one rich at the same income level.

Obama will always have trouble getting a low price for plumbing services given his desire to plumb the depths of their profits to spread their hard earned wealth around to others that didn’t crawl thru the mud to fix pipes, but the leak in his message that he is a champion of the middle class is now huge flood that can’t be plugged at any price.

weave (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 11:10PM EST (link)

What I find depressing is that we are basically voting on how much socialism we want this election.

Health Care. There is now no debate on whether or not to provide universal health care, it’s been decided. It’s now only how we do it and who pays for it. For example, give everyone a $5,000 tax credit means all those people who pay no income tax get that credit as well. And this will turn into tomorrow’s entitlement program. As healthcare costs rise, Congress will need to pass new legislation to raise that credit. A tax credit like that just means taxpayer money is being transferred to those who don’t pay taxes.

Mortgage bailouts. Both candidates want to bail out people who made bad choices and purchased a home they couldn’t afford. OWNING A HOME IS A DREAM, NOT A RIGHT. When did that concept change? McCain says that if we don’t bail these people out, that house next to us may be foreclosed and pull down property values. I got news for you, if the person living there can’t afford a mortgage payment on their own without government help, they certainly can’t afford the routine and unexpected costs required to upkeep a home. It’ll turn into a neighborhood blight anyway. Might as well let the bank sell it at whatever the market decides it is worth. The new owners will then take better care of it because hopefully future home sales require proof of ability to pay for it.

The Book of Revelation talks about seven years of tribulation followed by a 1000 years of peace. Right now I’m thinking Obama should win, let’s deal with 4 years of economic turmoil, followed by at least 8 years of prosperity when the next Reagan rises, as happened after Carter’s four years. Yes, I’m certainly not the first person to hold this view. I’m just starting to think it has merit. :(

… just hold the line on 60.

THERE HE (Obama) WENT AGAIN…
On EVERY ISSUE the first thing out of his (Obama’s) mouth was SPEND MORE MONEY!!!!!!!

Education, again… SPEND MORE MONEY…. Never any Reform, never any commitment to excellence… ALWAYS… SPEND MORE MONEY…

Even in the Question on WILL YOU CUT PROGRAMS… He WANTS TO SPEND MORE MONEY ON PROGRAMS….

Everything is MORE MONEY and GOVERNMENT CONTROL as McCain rightly had a Freudian slip and called The O “MR. GOVERNMENT!”

The ONLY CHANGE that Obama preaches, is that YOU WILL ONLY BE LEFT WITH CHANGE (pennies only most likely) UNDER A OBAMA BIN-BIDEN ADMINISTRATION!!!

Health Care - Has anyone asked the doctors?

izoneguy (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 11:18PM EST (link)

About the idea of socialized medicine?
Insuring 47 million “quote un quote” uninsured
Americans will throw the system into chaos.
I would imagine the system would break completely
and then ONLY the people with money are going to
get real health care anyway. Those un-insured folks
are going to wish the government was here to help them.
The strain that local governements will be under will be
to much to bear. I would imagine you will see doctors with real talent flee to places where they can money and retire themselves someday. If Americans want free health care they should earn it. Stop smoking, drinking, taking drugs and having un-protected sex and then we can talk about it.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Stress Not Having One Party Control It All

olderthangandalf Wednesday, October 15th at 11:24PM EST (link)

Nothing happened tonight to change the trend. Tonight was the last chance for McCain on his own to change the trend. Barring some kind of big outside game changer it looks bad for McCain.

The best argument left is stressing the danger of having all power concentrated in one party. Independents are wary of the crazies on both sides, who get empowered when the checks and balances break down because they are overriden by partisan party discipline.

It might help McCain. It might help some of the congressional candidates. It’s worth trying.

In this case...

House to oil companies: Use it or lose it

Democrats Try ‘Use It or Lose It’ Oil Argument

Oil geologists say the Democratic legislation ignores the long-term realities of oil leasing, which takes years of studies to find and drill for reserves.

When federal land or waters are leased to oil companies in parcels of about 1,000 to 3,000 acres, usually for 10 years, there is typically just “a very general sense of the value of the land,” said Larry Nation, a spokesman for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Only some portions of leased land may hold accessible oil, while other portions do not, Nation said, but companies must continue to lease the entire parcel.

“There’s the misconception that every lease has oil,” added David Curtiss, director of the association’s Washington office. “A lease is a line on a map. It has nothing to do with the geology of where oil is.”

Young, meanwhile, called it “most ironic” that Markey, Hinchey and Emanuel were “even attempting to talk about increasing America’s energy production.”

“That they are attempting to make it appear as if they are for domestic energy production is baffling to me,” Young said. “Barely one month ago, Mr. Markey and Mr. Hinchey voted against my provision to open [the Arctic Refuge] for production.”

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Use it or lose it

John Steele (Diary) Wednesday, October 15th at 11:31PM EST (link)

is a phony issue. The oil companies are not drilling on some of the domestic leases they have because there either isn’t any oil there, not enough oil there or it isn’t economically practical to recover.

I have a hard time imagining Exxon leaving easily accessible domestic oil in the ground with oil prices at $100+ a barrel.

I’m scared. Because there is nowhere outside of Islamic countries Indonesia, or China left to run. German Docs make 1/2 to 1/3 of what we do-and we’ve already taken a 50% pay cut since 1990 in some specialties-primary care make in the 80-150K range now-rural Docs occasionally make less! Japanese Doctors have government mandates on what a procedure can cost. CT in Japan cost about 40$-not worth the investment in a machiene, or the insurance you’d need to protect you from lawyers claiming your radiation gave their client cancer. Docs in Japan get $4 for suturing any cut under 7cm-this barely covers the suture material and is not worth the liability if the wound gets infected. In England the system is melting down, doctors live like school teachers-but they don’t have a college pre-rec for Med school like we do and school is largely state funded. In many European countries doctors have to go on strike!

Sure our system is too expensive, but that’s because low deductable insurance with no coinsurance has created a moral hazard and turned Americans into huge health care consumers that expect the “luxury” model. It costs the average American $300K in the last 2 months of life to die, mostly because they and their family want the Doc to “do everything”.When we don’t feel the cost we want the best! And lawyers have further inflated costs by forcing Docs to practice protective medicine and order tests to rule out the rare “BIG ONE” that could bite them in the butt. For this reason, many medical practices that become widely accepted, but are later shown to not be cost effective, remain in vogue. For example random PSA screening has not been shown to have signifigant mortality benefit. Fetal heart monotors have been shown to increase C-sections without improving outcomes. Yet these practices persist, lest you be sued for not practicing “standard of care”.

The answer is a conservative one.

1) expose consumers to market forces through coinsurance. People will consume less and consume more wisely if they have to pay a percentage of their bill.

2) allow the US to use it’s massive barganingand buying power to get cheap drugs from big pharm-every other country does this and because of this GalaxoKlein (just picked as an example) makes 1/3 ofits profitin the US alone. It’s time we stop indirectly funding cheap drugs for other countries by drug company “cost shifting”

3) force the government to pay market price for Medicare/medicaid patients. Right now anyone who is private pay or has insurance is paying an invisible tax that goes directly to funding healthcare for the uninsured because of hospital cost shifting. The government pays a fraction of what the doctors bill. Hospitals need to make up the difference somewhere, so they get it from you.

4) realize that health care isn’t a right, but a priveledge and perhaps the civic responsibility of a modern society. It’s a priveledge for those who have the foresight to save for a rainy day or invest in good insurance at the cost of other luxuries they could otherwise afford. Perhaps it will be a privelege a kind and caring country will grant to the less fortunate. However it is not a right, and those who abuse the system by abusing their bodies and letting others pick up the tab can lose their privelege. Example: no govt. funded dialysis for cocaine addicts who have not been clean for several years.

The end of the race is Nov. 4, when the votes are counted

Whitehorse (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 12:02AM EST (link)

I believe McCain did quite well, as evidenced by the MSM (which always says the Democrat won the debate) calling this the “Joe the Plumber” debate.

As pointed out in Erik’s thread, Obama is seeming to “coast.” He’s trying to coast into the presidency in much the same way he coasted into the nomination. However, there are no superdelegated for the DNC to pester into voting for him.

McCain seems to know this race will be decided on Nov. 4. In this debate, much ammunition was displayed that can be used in the final 3 weeks of this campaign. I hope that the McCain campaign – & those of us who support him – use this ammunition wisely. If we get the message out, refute the assertions of Obama & his supporters while putting them on the defensive regarding Obama’s record & proposals, we just may have President McCain & VP Sarah Palin! We also have to work & get people who will vote for McCain/Palin out to the polls to vote. GOTV is going to be critical.

AOL poll makes McCain the winner

Hammer2008 (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 12:53AM EST (link)

AOL has a story and poll questions here (non-scientific). It shows that in the view of over 250,000 people, it was a tie. But based on all the debates, understand McCain won because this was his best so far.

Prediction: John McCain picks up 2-3% on Obama and drives this election back into the margin-of-victory path by Monday.

More interesting is that AOL asked which moderator did the best and which the worst. RedState-ers should not be surprised by the bipartisian response.

Who do you think won the debate?
Barack Obama 48%
John McCain 46%
Neither 6%

Did the debate affect how you will vote?
No 76%

I don’t vote 2%

How do you rate McCain’s performance?
Excellent 45%
Fair 31%
Poor 24%

How do you rate Obama’s performance?

The majority of Americans dislike McCain and like Obama.

Reading the cheerleading here has been a great disconnect for me. I read your thoughts on how McCain has won this or that, I just have to scratch my head and wonder how correct you are on your other stances.

That said, if the GOP wanted to win the race, McCain would not have been the nominee. Probably the strongest to win in this economic environment would have been Romney. Romney vs Obama might yield a whole different outcome come November.

I am unsure if any candidate can clean up the 10 trill debt in four years, probably not eight either. Keep in mind the first vote I ever cast was for Reagan and I was one of those crazy Perot supporters – twice.

My main concern is the fiscal aspect of government and McCain seems to be clueless on fiscal responsibility.

This was Mac's best debate...

antisocialist Thursday, October 16th at 1:25AM EST (link)

He’s not a great debater but at least he showed some passion tonite. I think he really could have put O on the defensive by saying something like this: “If Senator Obama’s economic plan is the correct one, then countries like Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and France would be the economic superpowers of this planet. They all follow the Obama economic model: national health insurance, higher taxes than us, more govt spending across the board, more regulations, and so on. But their economy’s don’t perform well at all: They have stagnant economic growth, minimal job creation, and around 9-10% unemployment. And the reason their economy’s perform so poorly is real obvious: Why should anyone work hard to make a lot of money if the government is going to tax it all away from you? Countries that do well economically follow a very different economic model: Free mkt capitalism, limited government, low welfare payments, low taxes, and minimal regulations–sort of the opposite of the Obama model. So it looks like countries do well economically to the degree that they do the opposite of what Obama suggests for our country.”

Also (as others have mentioned), Mac should have responded to O’s “95% will get a tax cut” garbage by pointing out that 40% pay no income taxes and he should have explained in great detail why the D’s are responsibe for our current mortgage crisis (CRA, Acorn, Fannie and Freddie, Frank & Dodd).

Let’s hope he’ll be able to turn it around in these last 3 weeks.

A tiny minority of the undecideds may be seriously weighing conflicting considerations, but the vast majority are simply idiots.

That’s the moronic audience McCain and Obama are trying to appeal to now (along with trying to peel off a few of each others supporters).

we can at least take solace that McCain did great in this debate. But IMHO he came off far to angry too often. That will not play well in Pieoria. He was good on substance, not great, he stuck it to Barack when needed but didn’t go in for the kill.

The independents that we’ve been hemoraging will start to flock back after this debate, but not in the droves we need. Im sad to say this election may be over without a KO punch tonight.

you want. But this debate wasn’t about the bases… it was about the Mushy Middle, the ones watching CBS and CNN and the votes that will decide this election. And in those snap polls, McCain didn’t win, in fact, he lost. Will that reaction spill over into the polls over the next couple of days… I hope not, but it certainly seems to have in the past couple of debates.

If you believe the polls, McCain has 3 weeks to turn this around and quite frankly I’m not seeing anything left in his quiver that going to work. He needs the Mother of All October Surprises. And yes… I’m over pessimistic… I blame the vodka… it’s the only way I can listen to Obama.

What has McCain done in this election to warrant that kind of certainty on your part?

He won the republican primary, certainly, but it didn’t seem to me like a crushing victory. Seemed like it was a crowded field and he barely crossed the finish ahead of the others. Maybe you disagree?

Since then he’s run what seems to be a distinctly average campaign, with the exception of selecting Palin. That was certainly effective for motivating the base and playing on the PUMA divisions.

He’s on to something here: that McCain should relentlessly push the point that an economic crisis is not a smart time to increase taxes on anybody, and Obama’s prescription is like the one that worked so well for Herbert Hoover after the 1929 stock market crash.

The idea that Obama will increase America’s tax burden overall is something that voters will readily believe (or already know), regardless how they feel about the redistribution components of Obama’s plan. A debate about whether increasing taxes will work better now than it did in the Great Depression works to McCain’s benefit among some voters who don’t already support McCain.

they aren’t specific polls but rather aggregates of polls put together by competent pollsters:

RCP

By aggregating various polling houses you tend to average out the ‘house effects’ and get a better sense of the real state of the race. A bad poll then is one data point of hundreds or thousands while a bad polling house is maybe one data point in ten or twenty.

But even if you don’t trust the accuracy of a given poll so long as the poll is administered consistently you can look to the trends (i.e. precision not accuracy).

Is that a threat?

I have great faith in the American people who will NOT vote for someone who promises to raise taxes – despite his claims that he will cut taxes for 95% of the people (insert memories of Bill Clinton ’92 here).

So, yes, you are correct that this can be a winning proposition for McCain/Palin.

There is still much time to spend resources on an issue that should be easy for the American people, ie Joe the Plumber, to understand.

McCain Wins on Points, but Barack Not Hurt...

tippycanoe (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 7:28AM EST (link)

The problem with the election at this stage is that Obama has now become legitimate. He’s been on stage long enough for most not to want to go back to the fundamental questions with him, that of experiennce and record and associations. We are now focusing on his coolness and smoothness as he explains how he will “spread the wealth.” The talk is how serious and careful he was in making the case…not that he was dead wrong in his ideology or was lying through his teeth! McCain is hacking away but there’s too much armor to make any kind of dent. But never before have we had the unspoken issue of race to contend with. We don’t know how the electorate will act in the privacy of the voting booth. Here’s where Barack may die the “death from a thousand cuts.” So it’s better to have won on points and still be out-cooled.

Final Thought

RetiredGrunt Thursday, October 16th at 8:21AM EST (link)

Look we all know that Obama talks eloquently. And, anytime that he talks people that don’t actually listen think that he knows what he is talking about. Last night John McCain WON that debate. He actually kept Obama on the defense. In fact Obama looked very perplexed 75% of the time.

At the end of the day we need to look at what we have here: 1 ticket that consists of 2 Lawyers, and the other ticket that has 2 individuals with diverse backgrounds.

I can actually see that if the lawyers win, they will spend their term trying to prosecute the first administration, and getting nothing done. This needs to be put out to the voters!

Gee, so much hand wringing, Jeff. McCain did fine.

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 8:28AM EST (link)

And your title sounds like one of those bad Viagra commercials.

This is McCain being, well, McCain. Who did you expect, Ronald Reagan?

McCain almost always attacks and regroups. I believe he finds unabated attacks distasteful and not the sign of a good executive. It also puts your opponent on the defensive; something McCain achieved for the first time last night. For the most part, Obama floundered and dissembled- something he has tried hard not to do in each debate (we had a sparse return of the “eh, ah, ah, ah”). That is good for McCain, so long as the outlining and proper labeling he started last night continues unabated.

Obama steady and looked Presidential? Were people actually listening and trying understand the meaning of what was said? He was speaking of the biggest welfare program in our nation’s history- redistributing wealth to over one third of our population who don’t pay taxes. He spoke of nationalizing our healthcare with forced choices, fines and other tools more aligned with the IRS. All an appeal to the “middle class”? Sounds like a recipe for economic disaster, not the opine of someone who falsely represents himself as the better fiscal choice.

What were those expecting a “game changer” looking for and who in heavens name, given past history of Mr. McCain would articulate such ridiculous conjecture? Fox news was especially bad in this regard last night and, as much as I respect Krauthammer, he let a rare moment of emotion outstrip intellectualism.

McCain sat in a prisoner of war camp all those years. He was not leading the escape unless everyone, and I mean everyone, would be able to come along. It is the perfect metaphor for his personality and career in general. McCain is a marathon runner, not a sprinter and will pace himself showing the strong, steady leadership and good judgment which are his hallmarks over the next several weeks. He must indeed follow the successful strategy of past elections which demand McCain continues to define who Obama is- a virtual eloquent mouthpiece for high taxes, big government, wealth redistribution and dependency which this country can now, more than ever, not afford.

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

I never gave much thought on abortion as a matter of fact I use to think it was womans right but not anymore, The Media along with Curious George want you to think? he meaning(Curious George Google the cartoon character it’s the ears its uncanny)has this wrapped up! but then ask yourself the following, why do they feel the need to have Television bought time to air a 30 min political commercial? and why do they need to have ACORN tampering with election? and why do they feel the need to smother the polls with a constant venue of stacked percentages that just don’t add up? and why do they need to spend the type of money in so called toss up states when in fact all states are toss ups?
Sounds to me like a recipe formulated on pure doubt!
Just ask yourself Do you want a “Socialist” country if so then Curious George is your candidate, who will rape your money in taxes anyway he sees possible.
or Do you want keep this country the U.S.A. then McCain is your canidate

Good luck donating

McCain opted in for public financing (dumb move I think) and so the last day you could donate directly to the McCain campaign was August 31st.

You can give money to the RNC or to McCain’s compliance fund which helps cover legal cost and stuff. There also a number of Senators that could use your help.

The snap polls

BlueLandRed (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 9:02AM EST (link)

are a new “feature” this year.

How accurate they are has yet to be determined. They do show a drift to the left in the country that seems to match what a number of other “regular” polls are showing. We’ll find out in November just how good those polls really are.

and that FDT looked tired and listless during primary debates, thought McCain cleaned Obama’s clock last night. She caught all the umms, and uhhs, of the Messianic one and even my 18 year old daughter, political novice that she is, looked at me at one point while His Slickness II bobbed and weaved and said “Is he ever going to answer a question?”

Just thought I’d share the viewpoints of a couple of non-political junkies who see things through different eyes than their politically obsessed hubby/daddy.

“All that need be done for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

Didn't watch the debate

But from what I am seeing here from people it looks like he is setting up the ball for the game winning score. Now McCain needs to make that final push of Obama doesn’t think we the people can so a damn thing without government up our ass, show Obama for the stealth candidate that he is, and how everything Obama is talking about would do unreparable harm to us within the next three weeks and he scores the game winning score. This election needs to be played like a football game, not a baseball game and the long ball.

“The accumluated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout, “Save Us!”….and I’ll look down and whisper, “No”…The Watchmen

That may be a good thing

He sounds like he’s a McCain supporter. If he admits as much, the media will change the narrative from “Middle-class plumber from Ohio says Obama’s tax increase will hurt him” into “McCain supporter and company executive, Joe Wurzelbacher supports McCain’s tax cuts for the rich”.

We likely would not be in this financial mess.

Government is too important to be left to the Government.

you can still contribute via McCain's website

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 1:23PM EST (link)

you are correct, because of public funding, distribution goes to RNC and other organizations (breakdown information is available via the site). Frankly, I’d rather it go to the RNC now anyway and/or 527′s that are putting up much better Ads.

I believe my theory pretty much works going back to 1972. I want it to stop at 2008.
