When attempting to defend his promise to meet, without precondition, with Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (while simultaneously attempting to deny he ever made such a promise), Barack Obama invoked Henry Kissinger as a supporter of his belief in unconditional diplomacy with enemies, leaders of terrorist states, and genocidal megalomaniacs alike.
Senator McCain immediately begged to differ, saying that Kissinger, his friend of 30 years, believes quite the opposite — as would any foreign policy realist who was not entirely naive of the real world.
The Weekly Standard‘s Stephen F. Hayes got on the horn to Henry Kissinger shortly after that exchange to find out who was right — and, unsurprisingly, the answer to that question was McCain.
Hayes reports that “Henry Kissinger believes Barack Obama misstated his views on diplomacy with US adversaries and is not happy about being mischaracterized,” and quotes the former National Security Advisor and Secretary of State as saying:
“**Senator McCain is right**. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level.
My views on this issue are entirely compatible with the views of my friend Senator John McCain.
We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that any negotiations with Iran must be geared to reality.”
Whoops.

Your Point?
BigGator5 (Diary) Saturday, September 27th at 12:01AM EST (link)And your point? Even if Henry Kissinger is unliked, Obama seem to take a lot of stock in what he had to say.
Educated (About The Issues Facing Us Today), Dedicated (To Making A Difference), And Highly Motivated (To Getting Things Done)

Clarity
Swisher Saturday, September 27th at 12:52AM EST (link)Kissinger said he favored meeting without preconditions and recommended it happen at the cabinet level. This is what Obama was referencing.
McCain then tried to make it seem as if Obama had stated that Kissinger said this applied to presidential meetings.
He said:
“Look, Dr. Kissinger did not say that he would approve of face-to- face meetings between the president of the United States and the president — and Ahmadinejad. He did not say that.”
OBAMA: “Of course not.”
Obama never said it should happen at the presidential level and agreed that Kissinger never said that.
This Kissinger quote also agrees with that:
“Senator McCain is right. I would not recommend the next President of the United States engage in talks with Iran at the Presidential level.”
And, as the Obama transcript shows, neither would Obama.
It was a dumb exchange. Both were saying that meetings should take place at the cabinet level, and both agreed that the Kissinger’s quote did not reference presidential meetings.
Here is every quote mentioning Kissinger:
BA: “Senator McCain mentioned Henry Kissinger, who’s one of his advisers, who, along with five recent secretaries of state, just said that we should meet with Iran — guess what — without precondition. This is one of your own advisers.”
JM: “Look, Dr. Kissinger did not say that he would approve of face-to- face meetings between the president of the United States and the president — and Ahmadinejad. He did not say that.”
BA: “Of course not.”
“When we talk about preconditions — and Henry Kissinger did say we should have contacts without preconditions — the idea is that we do not expect to solve every problem before we initiate talks.”
JM: “By the way, my friend, Dr. Kissinger, who’s been my friend for 35 years, would be interested to hear this conversation and Senator Obama’s depiction of his — of his positions on the issue. I’ve known him for 35 years.”
The point is, Kissinger said we should negotiate without preconditions. Obama states this. McCain either erroneously, or maliciously, says Obama claimed Kissinger said the PRESIDENT should do this. Kissinger never said this, and Obama never said he said this and even agrees that the presidient should not.
They call Kissinger and he confirms that the president should not do this, a stance that both McCain and Obama clearly agree with based on the transcripts.
What they were talking about, and everyone should know this, is how the Bush administration said NO ONE, (not the president, not the Sec. of State, NO ONE) should talk with Iran. Kissinger, Obama, and McCain all said that was a bad policy and even the Bush administration agrees and has had low level direct talks with Iran, which McCain, Obama, and Kissinger all agree is a good thing.
During that entire heated exchange not one person, Obama, McCain, or Kissinger ever disagreed with anyone.
Obama, McCain, and Kissinger all think that there should be talks with Iran on some level and all agree it should not be on the presidential level. Obama tried to rope McCain in to the old Bush view on the subject and to get out of it, McCain tried to misconstrue what Obama said. And Kissinger now confirms that he agrees with what McCain said about what he claims Obama said, but Obama never actually said that.
Lets all at least be honest about this exchange. OK?
Where is clarity?

Gary (Diary) Saturday, September 27th at 1:01AM EST (link)Was that Obama said he would have meetings with Iran. Kissinger only came up because Obama brought him up. The context means nothing here.

The transcript
Swisher Saturday, September 27th at 1:03AM EST (link)Here is the transcript:
http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/26/debate.mississippi.transcript/
Someone show me where Obama said the President should meet with Iran without preconditions. He says “we”. One could argue that “we” meant who ever won the presidency, but the much more logical and common sense interpretation would be “we” as in The United States. McCain agrees with that (but Palin does not).
“I think, with Ahmadinejad, personally, he is not one to negotiate with,” said Palin, referring to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. “You can’t just sit down with him with no preconditions being met.”
She seems to be making the universal case that the US should not. A view not held by McCain, Bush, Obama, or Kissinger, although one could argue that she was solely referring to the president, but its unclear from her comment and she comes across as believing that no one in the US government should talk to him. This view has been expressed here at Red State as well.

Kissinger's words
Swisher Saturday, September 27th at 1:08AM EST (link)Here are the Kissinger quotes being referenced:
“KISSINGER: Well, I am in favor of negotiating with Iran. And one utility of negotiation is to put before Iran our vision of a Middle East, of a stable Middle East, and our notion on nuclear proliferation at a high enough level so that they have to study it. And, therefore, I actually have preferred doing it at the secretary of state level so that we — we know we’re dealing with authentic…But I do not believe that we can make conditions for the opening of negotiations. We ought, however, to be very clear about the content of negotiations and work it out with other countries and with our own government.”
