True to Form, Barack Obama Waits for McCain’s Reaction, *Then* Comes Up With a Position

Is there a public figure in America today who is a bigger wuss than Barack Obama?

On Thursday, freshman Senator Barack Obama promised that he would be unveiling “new proposals” for dealing with the mortgage crisis at a Friday campaign stop in Florida.

On Friday, Obama reneged [Ed.- Somebody call CNN and check if that word is still OK to use] on that promise, instead saying that this was “not the time to present specific details for how to fix the immediate problem” — because, clearly, the height of a crisis, during the last two weeks that Congress will be in session for the rest of the year, is the wrong time to propose solutions.

That night, the administration sent its proposed legislation to Congress, for those still showing up to work to consider.

On Saturday, John McCain released a statement tentatively opposing the bailout and encouraging Congress and the administration to consider his own proposal for preventing similar crises in the future. At the same time, the L.A. Times accused Obama of “voting present” on the bailout, as the freshman Senator maintained his silence and watched his opponent for guidance.

Today, after taking a day to wet his finger and put it in the wind (and to watch his grown-up opponent for what to do), Obama came out guns a-blazin’ (figuratively, of course; we all know Barack Obama doesn’t own any guns, and doesn’t want you to either) and “assailed” the plan, to use the AFP‘s word.

The Bush administration has “only offered a concept with a staggering price tag, not a plan,” Obama declared at a Charlotte, NC rally (conveniently ignoring the fact that he has offered neither, instead backing off his promise of a “plan” with the excuse that it was “not the time” to present one).

“We have to come together, as Democrats and Republicans, to pass a stimulus plan that will put money in the pockets of working families, save jobs, and prevent painful budget cuts and tax hikes in our states,” said the post-partisan Obama, just before launching his usual, partisan attack on his opponent, whom he accused of wanting to “keep going down the same, disastrous path.”

Of course, his opponent has, as mentioned above, actually made a proposal to alter that path; but then again, when have accuracy or attention to detail been a strong suit (or any type of suit) of Obama’s?

As always, Barack Obama takes the easiest (and lowest) road. From having his political opponents removed from the ballot so that he could run unopposed (or the next closest thing to it), to repeatedly voting “present” on legislation, to, in this race, waiting for John McCain to take a position on an issue before making up his own mind on it, then coming out firing at McCain (rather than actually talking about his own position on, and proposed solution to, the issues), Obama’s career has been marked by cop-outs, relationships of convenience with very disreputable figures, and machine-politics-as-usual attacks.

This situation is no different. Obama is allowing the President, the rest of the Congress, and his own opponent in the presidential race to take all of the risk and make all of the statements, while he sits up straight on his highest of horses and tells them all that they’re going about fixing the problem the wrong way.

Anybody can sit back and tell the folks actually coming up with ideas, be they good or bad, that they are wrong. It actually takes brains and a certain amount of risk to conceive an idea and put it before the public.

And Barack Obama, freshman Democrat Senator from Illinois, former State Senator who voted present over 100 times in seven years (and tried to change his vote ex post facto on even more than that), and former community organizer who was utterly unable to organize his community or to describe what a “community organizer” does?

Well, he wouldn’t know anything about that.

Tough opponent

wiseprince (Diary) Sunday, September 21st at 5:13PM EST (link)

That is why Barack is a tough opponent. If you try to debate him he just agrees with you and that becomes his position (not that he sticks with it). The media doesn’t call him on it either. Barack Obama does not have ideas he just promotes other peoples ideas (and he is apparently a good salesman). I am more confident today than yesterday that he really isn’t a leader. He is being lead by everyone else

This is the Standard Operating Procedure of the Democrat Party under Howard Dean and Rahm Emanuel: you develop a an official position once the answer is clear in the polls as to which answer you should politically, and not one moment before.

If it means you have to completely change your position from your previously stated positions, that’s OK. If you never had a previously stated position, that’s even better.

This is how Barack Obama got to be the Donk nominee for President under the stewardship of Joe Biden in the U.S. Senate.

The scary part is that half of the country and the majority of the rest of the world believes this is the way America should be run.

In 2004 Kerry would wait for Bush to take a position, then offer one diametrically opposed.
Now Obama waits to see what McCain says and presents the same position, only with lights and bells provided by the media.
If you can’t provide leadership, do whatever a real leader does and claim the glory.

While some may appreciate the shoot-from-the-hip style of governance that has led us into the current sorry state of our union, economically and otherwise, many of us appreciate the care and calm manner with which our future President, Barack Hussein Obama, has approached the current financial mess.

What we don’t appreciate is the misrepresentation here at Red-State that Senator Obama offers no plan. So for those who care, here is Obama’s seven-point plan for the protection of American taxpayers at this time of rush-to-judgment:

  • No blank check. If we grant the Treasury broad authority to address the immediate crisis {…and that should be enough text to let anybody who actually cares find Obama’s talking points. Next time, kid: provide a link instead of astroturfing Democratic talking points. – Moe Lane}

Financial Tsunami

JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Sunday, September 21st at 7:21PM EST (link)

Let’s be fair. There’s plenty of blame to go around in the mortgage crisis, and not much of it has to do with Democrats vs Republicans.

The fact is that VERY few people on either side of the aisle understand what has happened, let alone foresaw it.

Even the sharp-pencil Ivy League clones of Wall Street didn’t see this coming. They were too busy buying expensive sports cars and handmade Italian suits, while snorting coke and squiring plastic surgery veterans around.

We used to have a saying: “Trees don’t grow to the sky.” However, if everyone in the financial markets was cognizant of that, there would never be market corrections, would there?

Yes, the markets are efficient — EVENTUALLY.

Meanwhile, back in Washington, the only thing most politicians know about money is how to get it from “contributors”.
All you have to do is look at our tax code and the so-call federal budget to know that!

I’m no fan of Barack Obama’s, but even I don’t believe he’d have taken all that money from Fannie Mae if he’d seen this coming. The bottom line is that, like most of his colleagues in Congress, he did NOT see it.

Very few people can claim to have had a glimmer. Even fewer can claim to have had a plan to prevent it.

John McCain is one of the very few — perhaps the only one — who can make that claim. Maybe his warning and his proposed legislation would have worked; maybe not so much. But at least he was aware that something was happening.

The rest of ‘em were like the people on the beaches of Asia when the Christmas Tsunami hit. They didn’t have a clue. They still don’t.

at being asked so many questions first during the Democratic debates. It wasn’t that she was disproportionately put on the spot – she’s a pro and could discuss any issue (even if I don’t like her positions on it).

She resented the number of times Obama basically said, “Yeah, me too, I agree.” If you go back to the earlier primary debates with several participants, you will see how often he does just this. Ditto for this case, and the Russian invasion of Georgia, to name two off the top.

Democrats definitely contributed more to the financial crisis, though, especially Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. Republicans allowed it to happen, so they share responsibility, but it was Democrats who demanded the rules be changed to enable their deadbeat constituencies to qualify for mortgages.

Oh, and “reformer” Obama never lifted a finger to address the problem – other than to pocket more contributions from the GSEs than any other elected official, EVER – including helping John McCain when he first proposed reforming them in 2005.

I got this 3rd hand at the water cooler and of course it could be total nonsense…but does present an intriguing scenario….

On or about October 5th, Biden will excuse himself from the ticket, citing health problems, and he will be replaced by Hillary. This is timed to occur after the VP debate on 10/2.

There have been talks all weekend about how to proceed with this info. Generally, the feeling is that we should all go ahead and get it out there to as many blog sites and personal email lists as is possible. I have already seen a few short blurbs about this – the ‘health problem’ cited in those articles was aneurysm. Probably many of you have heard the same rumblings.

However, at this point, with this inside info from the DNC, it looks like this Obama strategy will be a go. Therefore, it seems that the best strategy is to get out in front of this Obama maneuver, spell it out in detail, and thereby expose it for the grand manipulation that it is.

So, let’s start mixing this one up and cut the Obamites off at the pass – send this info out to as many people as you can – post about it on websites and blogs – etc etc

That email has been passed around

Sudden Death for Obama Campaign

GOP Raines (Diary) Sunday, September 21st at 9:45PM EST (link)

The first decision that a Presidential candidate makes is his/her choice of Vice President, the decision is the candidates first as potential President. The choice of a serious running mate signals to the American people how serious the candidate is about running the country. If Obama pulls the switch (Biden to Hillary) it may show that he is unwilling to make a decision and stick with it. I think this would spell certain doom for the Obama campaign, and why would Hillary want to help Barry win, she wants to run for President in 2012.

JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Sunday, September 21st at 10:32PM EST (link)

25 years ago, you could not have purchased a home without good credit and 20% down.

For years, conventional wisdom has held that mortgages were “safe” investments… that mortgagees had a very high incentive to pay their debt and a low propensity to default.

But with the advent of Mortgage Backed Securities (MBS), coupled with the opportunities for higher yields that existed in subprime lending, that all changed. Throw in the huge leverage that many MBS holders are allowed to operate with, and voila, here we are.

It took years, however, for those default rates to rise. At first, subprimes had low default rates. But two things happened: (1) the subprimes got more and more “sub”, moving down into borrowers with a higher propensity to default, and (2) the additional demand for housing, now that new buyers were given seats at the table heretofore denied them, played into the supply/demand equation for real estate, helping to drive prices up — hence the housing bubble.

That’s overly simplistic, of course, but you get the point. There are certainly other factors, but this didn’t happen overnight, and it wasn’t apparent all along the way.

It’s a fact that since the early 1980s, financial types, whether fund managers, brokers, institutions, or bankers, have had their time horizons shortened to quarter-to-quarter performance. No one seems to take the long view, anymore … to think about long-term consequences of short-term actions.

So as long as those MBS were selling, banks were earning fees, institutions were stocking up with “safe” investments, and real estate flippers were making money, no one questioned where it would all end.

And more recently, certainly those running highly leveraged portfolios knew that buying MBS with OPM (other people’s money) was riskier and riskier.

But I ask again for us to be fair. The people packaging and selling MBS did not do so thinking this would happen. Why on earth would they do so? The investment banks and funds buying them up for their own accounts obviously did not do so to lose money.

Maybe some loan originators had a pretty good idea that a lot of the mortgages they made would never be paid off. But even then, they were looking at it from such a micro basis that they thought, hey, there’s collateral and it’s only going to increase in value.

This is a complex issue, and casting blame on one party or the other is just plain silly. I would contend that few politicians know where we are, much less how we got here. It will take a lot of analysis to figure out how this thing derailed so catastrophically.

The issue now is, how do we fix it? I’m just happy that ~someone~ is willing to try. McCain is earning my respect for that, and Obama is losing it for his, “umm, gee, gimme some time to see what everyone else has to say but I’m sure it’s Republicans’ fault” stand.

“To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.” Thomas Jefferson

I'm very much looking forward to the debates. It should finally shed a light on Nobama's lack of ANY worthwhile experience to lead this country. Ever in the military? Nope. Ever Goverened? Nope. Ever been a CEO, or held any other high ranking position in a private company? Nope. Length of term in US Senate? 200 days!? At which you voted 'Present' how many times?! What legislation have you authored? What have you done to bring 'Change' to the US Senate? Are you for real?! These are questions I want asked! (and answered) Problem is, that if you ask any questions the Obama's don't like, you're simply a racist! It's so easy! Why didn't I think of that?
Also, let's ask Nobama about his relationship with unrepentant terrorist William Ayers. I'd like to see him stumble about how he was a guy who lived next door...
This guy is a socialist plain and simple. America is heading down slippery slope of more regulation, more taxes, less individual freedom, and lots and lots of handouts....God help us!
