So Trump and his team were being asked to provide evidence of his claims that President Obama wiretapped his phones. Trump never backed off his comments. His supporters attempted to “prove” he was right, but over and over they were asked the same thing: “What evidence do you have?”
They had no proof. It was nothing more than Trump reading something in Breitbart (instead of watching it on Fox and Friends) and reacting to it on a Saturday morning when he is free to tweet without Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump around to keep him lucid.
Now, Sean Spicer is saying, “Never mind.”:
The White House on Monday walked back key point of President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated allegation that President Barack Obama wiretapped his phones in Trump Tower during the 2016 election.
Namely, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump wasn’t referring to wiretapping when he tweeted about wiretapping.
“I think there’s no question that the Obama administration, that there were actions about surveillance and other activities that occurred in the 2016 election,” Spicer said. “The President used the word wiretaps in quotes to mean, broadly, surveillance and other activities.”
Here is yet another example of people having to explain for Donald Trump, “What he really meant was…” The irony is something to behold considering Trump was elected in part because of his penchant for “…saying what he means.”
Spicer’s comments came on the same say as the deadline for the Justice Department to provide evidence to the House Intelligence Committee to back up Trump’s claim. The White House has so far refused to provide any evidence, and numerous former officials have denied the existence of any warrant to wiretap Trump Tower.
A week earlier, Spicer said Trump’s tweet “speaks for itself” and declined to provide any further explanation.
So first, the tweets spoke for themselves. Now it needs to be ‘clarified.’
You go with that, Sean. You know Trump’s base will accept any excuse. The rest of us will sit back and laugh.
