He had such respect for our soldiers in harm’s way that he begged the thugs in Iraq to “bring it on” to show our toughness.

And, of course, he stood by while his cronies on Wall Street took the economy down.

But at least GW Bush is comfortable now.

He sold the nation and the US military down the river because he absolutely REFUSED to stand up to the lies being screamed from the housetops about his foreign policy in general and his Iraq policies in particular.

He refused to stand up to a congress with Republican majorities on mortgage lending and banking issues. He sent commentary up the flag pole and sat back and watched while it was shredded.

He refused to stand up the Senate Judiciary on judges. He nominated qualified conservatives and sat with his thumb up his you-know-where while a committee with a Republican chairman and sufficient votes on the floor to confirm them. He let McCain get away with G14.

Bush’s economic policies weren’t much better than Carter’s – marginally better at best. He refused to push to have his tax policies made “permanent” and let the Congress spend like there was no tomorrow.

Was Bush “as bad as” Carter? No. Almost as bad as? Absolutely. He was a pathetic President. He couldn’t lead a tweaker to an 8 ball. The only reason he got reelected was because of the SwiftVets and he told them to mind their own business.

There is damn little that you can say about GWB’s performance as POTUS that would say he wasn’t a total political coward. Frankly, the one you cite isn’t really much. Yeah, he stopped federal funding. He didn’t do anything to hinder the State of CA from floating a $1B bond to fund embryonic stem cell research did he?

The only reason GWB might not be remembered as a total failure and a laughingstock is because of the idiot who’s come after him. But at the end of the day, we’d be better off if we’d never heard of “Bush”. Either of them.

There are plenty of other examples.

Also, please refrain from comparing GW Bush, or any other President for that matter, to Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter’s economic policy was so terrible, that economists had to invent a new name for it. (stagflation) Comparing ANY other President to him is unfair to that other President.

In my view, history will judge “leaders” based on what they accomplished rather than by how they are perceived at the time — in that sense, refusing to smack down the likes of Wolf “I lost on Jeopardy” Blitzer and overpaid celebrity hacks like Matt Damon hardly makes him another Carter…

If Carter had the oratory skills of a Broadway stage actor, he’d still have sucked as a President. Jimmy Carter was Jimmy Carter because of his support of insane economic policies that drove the country into the ground. The worst you can say about Bush is that he “let” 9/11 happen (though history will likely focus more on Jamie Gorelic’s role in that) and that he “let” the Fed, Freddie/Fannie, Barnie Frank and Chris Dodd (and all of the 2007-2008 Democratic Congress, for that matter) destroy our economy without enough of a fight and then was unable to articulate that it was THEIR FAULT.

So, I think I agree with you that GWB’s leadership skills were sub-par — and agree that it will be remembered as such — though I strongly disagree that history will view him as Carter II; especially not when preceding Obama.

1. The fundamental job of the President is Leadership. Both for his country and for his party.

2. GWB did a good job his first couple of years in office with respect to leadership on the “war” front after 911. He did an excellent job with the initial conflict in Afghanistan, both on the military and on the political front.

3. On the political front, it’s pretty obvious with his recent comments about the Tea Parties redefining the Party – where he essentially said “I” redefined the Party, they’re not going to change that. – that he understands that he was the Party leader.

4. With a President in office “people like us” and Congresscritters aren’t the ones who have to lead the fight. That’s what leadership is.

Bottom line is that GWB was a political coward.
