Let’s just start with Mexico’s law with regards to illegals in their country shall we?
There was a post this weekend with regards to illegal’s and how the Republican Party lost the vote of Hispanics, (real nice of everyone to lump those of brown skin all together like that) because of their racist views on illegal’s. My son’s girlfriend is Cuban and she specifically HATEs being lumped together with the word HISPANIC she finds that to be racist!
This law and order American believes that we have wonderful and exciting people who join our mixing bowl of society. They wait, they wait, and they fill out paperwork upon paperwork to FINALLY come to the best COUNTRY this globe has to offer. So we as a country should say to those who did not follow the prior procedure “well you snuck into our HOUSE and you should now be rewarded?” I think NOT and I am not the only one who thinks not.
The bigger issue with our border of course is those we would NOT want in our country and to pretend that it is just hard working Mexican’s who are law abiding (already broke a law) sneaking into our country is to be a LIAR and endangering the lives of American citizen’s. Now these “hard workers” from not just Mexico but El Salvador and on and on have broken one law and then proceed to break another…that’s right IDENTITY THEFT…and when you have now broken a couple of our laws WE now are going to say “that’s ok you made it here you are now legal”….BS!
The United States of America is a country of laws and a country with boundaries and neither of those is being enforced by those we elect to represent US….I am quite sure that in the greater scheme of things they are probably hardworking and quite honest BUT who would know that? in that a couple of laws WE AMERICANS hold near and dear have already been broken. I do not lay the blame at the feet of just the illegal’s OH NO…lets talk about companies that knowingly hire ILLEGALS and the Republicans who support them. That’s right the Chamber of Commerce in every state were salivating over that potential bill McCain-Kennedy because they thought they would reap the rewards as they had already of paying people the barest minimum wage for jobs that Americans wouldn’t do for that wage….LET’S BE CLEAR THERE ARE JOBS THAT AMERICANS WILL NOT TAKE BECAUSE THE WAGES ARE NOT COMPARITIVE TO THE GROSSES THE COMPANY WILL REAP! ie: jobs Americans will do but jobs Americans will not accept SLAVE LABOR WAGES for!
It occurs to me that the first and foremost issue in regards to this dilemma that politicians and WE THE PEOPLE are engaged in would be our safety…I know that Senator McCain said “I will build the G*dan fence”….but there doesn’t seem to be any proof that it is occurring and I say to myself when I read stories such as below these MURDEROUS people are literally over the border and surely we can have an orderly process and know that they will not CROSS our porous border and do the same to Americans RIGHT? WRONG because these stories are every day and MS-13 has done these exact types of murders in our country for years. It tends to make one think that our politicians do not have our best interests at heart….THAT IS WHAT I THINK!
OH and please anyone responding do NOT say this is an isolated incident because it is NOT….not in Mexico and NOT here….and if you would just take the time to visit the actual internet and pull up STORY AFTER STORY AFTER STORY you as well will see that this is indeed the SAD story of our OPEN BORDERS policy….oh and please DO NOT REFER TO ANYONE WHO AGREES WITH THIS POST IN A WAY THAT IMPLYS THEY ARE RACIST….so now lets discuss shall we?

scottbomb (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 12:38AM EST (link)Just wait til Obama grants them all amnesty and makes sure they get to vote in 2012. With a stacked House and Senate, I don’t think any of them will give a rat’s-you-know-what how many people call/fax/email Capitol Hill this time. Come Jan. 20, the fox will be in charge of the henhouse.
Now THAT’S something I’d be happy to be wrong about… and here lately… my record for being wrong is pretty good so perhaps there is “hope” after all!

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” – Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948
With all due respect,
jeffreywturner (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 1:48AM EST (link)and I really mean that because I too am for law and order,
We HAVE changed laws before, and just for the record, a reduced penalty (ie: fines) is not the same thing as amnesty. I hate to split hairs here, but we have to be honest when discussing these things. And while we are being honest, let us admit that our hero (my hero at least), the greatest leader of the 20th century as far as I am concerned, the late, great Ronald Reagan himself pushed for and signed an actual amnesty (ie: NO punishment, just blanket amnesty).
As for the “Cuban” issue; those Americans of Cuban heritage have been the exception to the rule when it comes to voting trends among hispanics, mainly because they are all too familiar with the evils of socialism/communism. They also have a special status among immigrants upon arrival in the US. I am not sure if you are aware, but they have a unique exemption from deportation as soon as they set foot on dry land. Given these facts, it is not surprising that many of them would not want to be classified as “hispanic” politically.
Finally, as to the larger question of immigration, we have GOT to find a way past this issue. We need to FACE FACTS. White Americans are dwindling due to low birth rates, and Black Americans have shown ZERO propensity to vote for Republicans in significant numbers in contested races between same-race candidates. The only other potential source for long-term growth of the conservative movement is hispanics, who, are the fastest growing segment of the population due to birth rates, regardless of immigration.
I am not saying we need to be for amnesty, but we agree on something and we need to do it now, or we will continue to be demagogued with hispanics by the liberals.
If it is ONLY about law and order, could we perhaps make Mexican immigrants the same status as Cubans? (ie: you make it here, you say) Then they would be here “legally”, so no breaking of the “law” if that is all that bothers us.
If it is overcrowding of hospitals & such that bothers us; making them legal taxpaying citizens would at least mitigate that problem. Or better yet we could grow some testicles and address the real problem there instead, which is the feeling of liberals that everyone is “entitled” to free healthcare.
I am not saying I have the answers, but when I saw the southwest as solid red in 2004 with the GOP winning nearly half of the votes of the largest minority group (and soon to be largest minority vote) in the US, I felt very good about our chances going forward and I want to get back there. Seriously, someone please find a way for us to make a stand on this issue without alienating more voters than we attract.

BatMasterson (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 2:32AM EST (link)Actually jeffrey if you go out to the net you will find
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 10:04AM EST (link)that Hispanics do not support amnesty either so that is this biggest LIE being told out in the MSM….just put in Hispanics for amnesty, for or against, polls and see what comes up..
The latest I found on this subject
You see there are a LOT of people who took a LOT of time and did the right thing to get here and they not extremely happy with someone ILLEGALLY coming and getting what they worked so hard for and by the way Mexicans tend to be Catholic and in the future I am sure they will lean back BUT to give blanket amnesty to one group is RACIST….there are illegal Irish etc in this country….so what is the answer? come in put your name on the list go home and if you have an employer who is going to sign paperwork that they have a job waiting for them….then they should be able to get the temporary paperwork to come back…YOU DO WANT OUR NEW POTENTIAL CITIZENS WORKING RIGHT?
Our new citizens cannot bring anyone other than spouses and children until they can PROVE that they can support and sustain their other relatives ie: parents, sister, brother etc…TRULY SUPPORT THEM!
There is a workable plan BUT to just let the border sit open is insane! THERE ARE MURDEROUS THUGS and you think they are not coming in and out of this country?
FIX THE BORDER! WE in the party are not against Hispanics HELL we want all comers who have something to offer just as the Mexicans require of those who come to their country.

Reagan ONLY agreed
Grump642 (Diary) Tuesday, December 2nd at 7:08PM EST (link)to that amnesty after Congress agreed to seal the border and make it harder for illegals to get jobs. Congress failed to live up to the agreement. As usual. I do not believe Reagan pushed this bill at all. He later said he was sorry he signed it.
The multi-billion dollar question is:
Steph C (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 5:38AM EST (link)How many really want citizenship? The MSM and politicians trot out a few here and there to make their case but there’s a huge component of the 12-20 million (probably a lot higher now) who could care less about gaining citizenship. All they want to do whatever it is they’re doing and not have to suffer the consequences.
In the end, all any new legislation would do about illegal immigration is continue stalling securing the border and other counter measures. For a government big on studies for most other things, decent studies are decidely lacking on this issue.
In addition, a great many of them send money out of the country from their illegally gained jobs… to the tune of 16-24 billion dollars a year just for Mexico alone. Add in the ones from other countries doing the same and you know it has to have an effect on the economy since that money is circulating elsewhere, not here. They’re also a part of the housing mortgage crisis further sucking money of the economy and a number of other factors that should be considered before making any kind of wholesale decision.
Can we, as a nation, afford to do this in view of the costs?
What is it really going to change doing this? This one has been answered somewhat during the furor over the immigration reform bill. There was admission that in the end it wouldn’t do much to stem the tide.
Okay, so everybody is arguing that Reagan did it. Even without going into that in-depth you can ask the question: How did that work out for us?
Isn’t it time to try something different? I thought this election was all about change but from what I’ve seen so far, change is extremely low on the priority list and Obama hasn’t even taken the Oath of Office yet.

The problem is not our refusal to give amnesty...
Shawn Gillogly (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 7:27AM EST (link)but it is the ham-handed way we articulate the position. We are a nation that was founded by immigrants, has prospered because of our immigration policies. And there are segments of the Latino population that we really should be doing better than we are in because the Pat Buchanan’s of the world are the only “conservatives” who seem to get heard when it comes time to discuss this issue (and since Tancredo practically quotes Buchanan verbatim on this, he isn’t any better for us on this score).
Somewhere between blanket amnesty and the apparent thuggery in the fake nostalgia of the Buchanan position, there has to be a realistic solution that we can articulate.
But there’s one thing that we need to be clear about. As long as the penalty for businesses that employ illegals is less significant than the profit they can make for hiring them, illegals will come into this country any way they can. The solution is not the fence. That won’t stop the desperate job-hunter trying to feed a family. Any solution has to involve dropping the hammer on any company caught hiring known illegals.

Here are two policy suggestion
waltsfour Wednesday, December 3rd at 9:29AM EST (link)How to appeal to Hispanic and other immigrant populations?
I wish to remind everyone that a large share of the immigrant population does not come from Latin America but from Asia. Viet. and the Phil. lead the way. Also, Bosnia ranks in the top 10 nations from whence immigrants come. This being said, a friendlier policy towards legal immigration would help the conservative movement appeal to a wide range of demographics.
One conservative goal is to promote strong security, nationally and locally (anti-crime). This goal is often sighted when it comes to immigration. However, conservatives also support lesser government. This latter goal is forgotten by conservatives in the immigration debate. One method of reforming the immigration debate is to stress opening the door to legal immigration. By expanding the numbers of permitted immigrants, citizens who are filing for bring in their children, spouse, parents or brothers would be very appreciative. Businesses likewise would benefit from the ability to obtain skilled workers. Simplification is a must. Dozens of visa types exist. Creating a system where families can petition on their own, without the need to obtain legal advice, at a rate of thousands of dollars, would also curry favor with the immigrant population. Conservatives are for the family, for business and for less government. Expanding the number of legal immigrants would help unite families, strengthen business and strike a blow against big government. Helping families unite in this country would also have a healthy impact upon the youth of the immigrants. I live in the DC suburbs and the MS-13 gang is present. Their members are often US citizens, the children of immigrants who have had to grow up without the support of both parents.
How to deal with illegals in the United States? Strengthening the border is a must, but it would only have a limited impact on the flow of illegal immigrants. I believe 45% illegals come in with a legal visa and overstay their visa time limit. A sealed border would not stop these illegals who are visa overstays. For national security purposes, I am more fearful of a visa overstay then a border jumper.
Attrition is the most powerful weapon against illegals. By permitting an increase of legal immigration, a practical alternative would open to those wanting to enter the nation to work hard. Currently if you petition your sibling from the Phil., you will have to wait over 10 years for your sibling to have approval. Such an alternative is not practical. Stronger business enforcement is required as well. Finally, the “Fair tax” would fully tax illegals who might be paid in cash. If illegals would realize that they could return to their country and re-enter legally within a reasonable period of time, I believe the majority of them would do just that.
The next debate may be on whether or not the country would be able to handle an increase in immigrant numbers. I believe it could.

Don't get me wrong...
jeffreywturner (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 12:10PM EST (link)I think illegal immigration affects latino voters in the same way it affects anglo voters, but the fact of the matter is, the left has been able to demagogue us on the issue as racists.
The perfect analogy is affirmative action. It hurts black people way more than it has ever helped them, and if you ask the question “Do you think people should be hired/fired/promoted on the basis of skin color?”, blacks overwhelmingly oppose preferences. However, the left and the MSM have been able to demagogue opponents of affirmative action as racists.
Now it is kind of irrelevant with blacks, because they will never support us, but latinos have demonstrated a propensity to support conservatism, not only due to devout Catholocism, but also because they are very entreprenurial. We just have to find a way to be for law & order without exposing ourselves to these attacks.

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 12:36PM EST (link)lets get our bearings on the economy and than increase legal immigration….I mean like a year from now….but to legalize 20+ million as McCain would have done 18 months ago would have put quite a burden on the welfare state at this time either because most of those jobs were in Construction or Service ie: hotels or because American’s would lose their jobs to people who are willing to take a lot less as a paycheck!
Either scenario would look quite UGLY at this time!

Immigration and the economic downturn
waltsfour Wednesday, December 3rd at 1:39PM EST (link)I see the point that an increase in immigration could lead to increase in domestic competition for certain job types in certain areas of the country. It makes for bad politics.
However, I would also add that historic trends of immigration show that economic downturns lead to large drop off in the number of immigrants. I would not be surprised to see that the current economic downturn leads to a return of immigrants to their countries of origin. This has happened before, notably with Italian and other south/eastern Europeans in the first half of the 20th century.
Hence, from a standpoint of policy I do not believe that a more open immigration policy worsens an economic downturn. If certain American industries currently lack skilled workers, a more open immigration policy may allow for expansion within those industries.

Hey look, I am talking political reality here
jeffreywturner (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 1:57PM EST (link)Some things are just more politically prickly than others. I hear a criticism from you, but no solution. Do you have a way for us to fix the problem without alienating the vote? Remember whose side I am on here. I think the mindless slaughter of innocent babies under the guise of a constitutionally protected right is the worst crime against humanity in America today. However, I know that the political reality is that we have to get ELECTED in order to have any chance of fixing it. This is an issue of life and death, and one that latinos largely agree with us on, but we can’t get past this immigration issue in order to show them that what we have to offer elsewhere.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”
That, I can definately agree with you on.
jeffreywturner (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 2:03PM EST (link)I can’t say how much I agree with you on that.
Border agents should be given a lot more lattitude in determining when the use of deadly force is warranted. THEY are the ones with their lives on the line, not a judge in a black robe behind a bench, and not a politician in an office building.

Citizenship and Remittances
waltsfour Wednesday, December 3rd at 2:04PM EST (link)Ever since the advancement of steam-ship tech. a large share of immigrants have contemplated working in the US and returning home. This is true whether the immigrant is legal or illegal.
As to remittances, it is true that a lot of money flows out of the US. How much of that will flow back to the US? The money is used to purchase projects, start small business which grows the economies of those nations. In the long-run that will enhance the US economic prospect. Where would the Celtic tiger (Ireland) be today if not for the remittances it received during the 19th/20th centuries? Same thing for Italy and Greece. Encouraging small enterprises in Latin American nations is probably a more effective tool than giving those nations direct foreign aid. In fact, the US TPS policy, which permitted illegal immigrants to obtain temporary legal status to work, if they were from a nation struck by disaster, such as Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador, is a reflection of the fact that remittances are an effective form of foreign aid. Free market foreign aid, a true conservative idea.
In addition, we live in a hemisphere prone to socialist/communist ideals. Latin American nations have seen their wealth concentrated, partly as a remnant of the Spanish colonial administrations. Remittances provide micro-financing which decentralizes wealth and power. Decentralized wealth and power negate the power of an otherwise large impoverished class and thus fights an inclination towards socialist/communistic ideals to redistribute wealth. Remittances are one of the US’s most powerful tools to fight Chavez and his cohorts.

I too agree.
waltsfour Wednesday, December 3rd at 2:07PM EST (link)Either strengthen the border patrol right to force or use the military. Note: I don’t know enough about the legal implications of using the military but I think it makes good policy.
jt
My argument isn't with your position on the issues.
mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 3:15PM EST (link)It’s with worrying about the reaction of the press and the Democrats.
First of all, we are long past time when we should have learned to deal with the fact that the press will never be on our side on any issue (are you listening McCain/Graham/etal?). President Reagan understood it and when he wanted a clear win on an issue he defined it in simple terms and went directly to the American People. Newt did essentially the same thing in ’94. We’ve not had another leader who’s even tried this. (I should have put the period before “who’s”)
As it is, we can win but winning takes time and strategy and focus.
First, choose the issues that are our top priority.
Second, define those issues in simple terms.
Third, define and incremental strategy to achieve our desired ends for each issue.
Fourth, define a program – it must be simple to understand and achievable – for each increment. Each increment should have policy goals that stand on their own right.
Fifth, at every opportunity GOP representatives – like on every Sunday show – should hammer the program and the talking points. Without regard to what the host wants to talk about. And we should be hearing the same points continuously from all of the public mouthpieces of the Party.
This is basically Contract With America times ten. Define the issue, explain the issue in an understandable way, define the solution over a series of standalone steps that are individually achievable, constantly sell the program and the solution at EVERY opportunity. No freaking mavericks allowed.
With respect to immigration, it could be done pretty much as it was layed out last year. Enforcement and then immigration policy. Under no circumstances are we talking about mass deportations, but we certainly should be running checks on every individual who is arrested for anything, misdemeanors included, and deporting illegals. We should be taking aggressive measures to make sure that employers are hiring only people who have the legal right to work and we should be prosecuting violators vigorously. It’s working in Arizona. We should be building a wall on the border, full length, two or three tiers of chain link & steel with razor wire and cameras, but we should not be relying on “high tech”.
We should be looking at our immigration policy and probably defining a couple of things clearly. First would be a low-skilled guest worker program (as opposed to H1B), and second is a long term look at how many immigrants we want to allow to enter the US. A solid proposal on guest workers would be a great place to start, since the vast majority of illegals are in low skill jobs and would fall into that category.
That’s generally where I would start with immigration. We can, and should, do the same thing on abortion, on tax policy (flat tax/fair tax/whatever), etc.
It worked out pretty well.
Diogenes314 (Diary) Wednesday, December 3rd at 3:54PM EST (link)Since you asked. At least under Reagan and Bush I. At that time the government was actually investegating employers who hired illegals, and border jumping declined. It increased when the Clinton administration not only cut back on enforcement but threatened civil rights prosecutions againgst employers that ‘profiled’ their workers to determine status. Add to that the ease of obtaining false documentation-and here we are.
Of course now we have a Attorney General designate who thinks racial profiling is the ultimate crime
