The Climate Research community can’t claim lack of funding. But rather than act as trusted guardians of their precious artifacts, in aggregate they acted in the manner of a dog & pony show. Who cares about accuracy when all we need to do is sell it.

It has also been disclosed that the Government’s chief scientist, John Beddington, was forced to defend controversial claims in the television campaign, which features a father reading his daughter a frightening bedtime story about global warming.

£6m government ad warning about climate change is to be investigated by watchdogs over claims it is misleading and too “scary” for children.

The government has already been prevented from screening the ad during children’s programmes.

But the ASA has still received complaints from parents saying it is too frightening, although most complainants questioned the scientific basis of the claim that climate change is man-made.

An ASA spokeswoman said: “It is not just about the issue of climate change in this particular case. We have had a huge number of complaints about the science but also whether the ad itself is scary for children.”

She said the watchdog would be investigating whether the claims about climate change could be substantiated and whether the ad complied with taste and decency rules.

But because of the complex issues involved the probe is likely to take longer than normal, she added.

The Advertising Standards Authority has received 1000′s complaints about the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s “bedtime stories” ad.

Meanwhile his fellow prophet of doom, Gordon Brown, was making his own way to Copenhagen the same day.

This is the man who proclaimed in October that we had ’50 days to save the world’. Before leaving he conjured up on a television programme the certainty of ‘floods and droughts’ with ‘climate change evacuees and refugees’ if agreement is not reached in Copenhagen.

Mr Brown chartered a 185-seat Airbus to take him and 20 aides to Denmark. Was a smaller plane producing less carbon dioxide not available?

Could he perhaps have shared an aircraft with Prince Charles? Might he have considered taking a scheduled flight to the Danish capital, of which there were 16 on Tuesday?

Show me a climate control zealot and I can often show you a hypocrite, and a hypocrite, moreover, who speaks in apocalyptic terms about the world coming to an end – at a time not long hence and usually implausibly specific – if the rest of us do not immediately curb our lifestyles so as to produce fewer greenhouse gases.

The double standards and the grotesque exaggeration go hand in hand.

Some, at least, of the zealots do not really, honestly believe that things are as bad as they say. If they did, they might not go on serenely generating carbon emissions on such a scale.
They are trying to shock us into action by employing emotive language and invoking terrible dangers. In other words, they are treating us as fools.

Politicians shamelessly twist the facts to scare us witless. There has been an appalling case in Copenhagen this week.

In 1972 a group of distinguished scientists wrote a letter to the U.S. President, Richard Nixon, expressing their fear that the world was entering a new Ice Age.

If those scientists were so completely wrong then, it is not an affront to reason to question whether the more outlandish climate scientists and their supporters might not be overstating their case now.

As I say, we may not understand climate change, but we do know when we are victims of a fraud.

“This is the problem with politicians trying to create a market for something that the free market otherwise doesn’t value,” Schulz said. “An emissions trading market is an artificially, politically-created market….

“If we pass a system like Europe has, we’re going to get all the problems Europe has experienced,” he said. “You’re asking for a lot of problems.”

U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said it’s no surprise cap-and-trade systems are vulnerable to corruption.

Barton said he recently asked the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California to unseal the court file of Anne Sholtz, a former environmental executive who co-created the Regional Clean Air Incentives Market (RECLAIM) in 1999. Sholtz’s company, Automated Credit Exchange, provided a market for companies to buy and sell pollution credits under RECLAIM. In 2005, Sholtz pleaded guilty to wire fraud for using counterfeit credits to pocket more than $12 million. Sholtz was later sentenced to one year of house arrest. (Barton wrote about Sholtz earlier this year for TheHill.com.)

“We already know from an example in California that cap-and-trade systems are vulnerable to fraud, so the discovery of potential fraud in Europe shouldn’t surprise anyone in America,” Barton said in a statement. “What happened in California is that not much thought was given to the possibility that people with questionable intentions could manipulate the system. The case has drawn fresh attention because it looks like the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice still may not understand how to stop a vastly more destructive, Bernie Madoff-like scheme from taking advantage if the nationwide cap-and-trade system is approved by Congress.”
