On the eighth anniversary of 9/11, a professor of mine made a comment that caused a lot of soul-searching for me. He remarked, quite casually, that the United States is in decline.
Those words angered me. Nobody likes to hear their country characterized in that manner. But ever since then I’ve been considering that casual statement.
I think it accurately describes the state of our nation.
We are a nation in decline.
We are in decline for a variety of reasons, some more controllable and some less so. Economic weakness has something to do with it, as does the popularity of anti-Americanism. Misadventures in the Middle East and the rise of China also play a participating role.
But enough about why we are in decline. What can be done to stop it?
There are two courses for the United States to take, both of which can somewhat alter its path of late. The first is to pay less attention to the Middle East. After the 9/11 attacks, that region of the world drew the undivided attention of the United States; to this day, it is still obsessed with Iraq and Iran and Israel and Afghanistan and on and on.
Most would agree that the United States has been hurt by this obsession. America’s world image (and soft power) has been terribly damaged, strengthening those less friendly to it. Moreover, the Middle East has relatively little of value to offer, save for oil. And even that valuable resource does not justify excessive entanglements in a place that, more than any other part of the world, dislikes the concept of the United States.
The second bit of advice I have is to admit more immigrants. An immigrant is the best thing a nation can have. By definition, he (or she) is ambitious and hard-working enough to move thousands of miles, away from friends and family, to a place where he does not speak the language or know anybody. Very few people are motivated enough to do this.
Immigrants have created millions of jobs: the late 1990s technology boom was the product of Chinese and Indian immigrants who moved to Silicon Valley. Albert Einstein was an immigrant. For continued economic growth and national welfare, admitting more Albert Einsteins is absolutely essential.
Admitting more immigrants might not reverse U.S. decline, nor might limiting U.S. involvement in the Middle East. Superpowers – whether they be Spain, Britain, America, or China – do not and cannot last forever; in the end they all fall. But perhaps, if these two suggestions are followed, the United States might just last longer than most.

National security interests dictate that the Middle East be transformed and brought into the 21rst Century. Abrogation of our responsibility as an advocate of Liberty will ensure the end of US sovereignty.
A better course…
… and one that will actually succeed, because it’s the foundation of our Republic.
Our Republic will endure as long as it remains the beacon of Liberty and defender of the oppressed. We ignore that responsibility at our own peril.

A professor...
mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, October 10th at 9:30PM EST (link)that pretty much sums up the problems with your foolish little thesis.
I would absolutely agree that the US is in decline, but for exactly none of the reasons you offer. You’ve spent too much time in the hallowed halls and not enough time in the real world. RBD hit the nail on the head, and quite eloquently too.
I’ll summarize, less eloquently. Reason for decline is really quite simple. We’ve devalued liberty – as in individual liberty – on our shores and abroad. We’ve opted, over the past 60 years or so, for a more and more socialist model like Europe.
You want to reverse the decline – and you only have two choices, continue or reverse – we need to move back to the model of the founders. Individual liberty is what created and made this country, lack of it will destroy her.
Thanks, mbecker...

Better that the states follow the Texas School Board’s lead and restore History.
Nearly an entire generation freely risks losing one of our unalienable rights because they don’t understand the concept of Liberty and the individual responsibility those rights demand.

Yes we are in decline but it's a man caused disaster
Danny Huddleston (Diary) Sunday, October 10th at 11:28PM EST (link)We are in decline right now because of Obama but it’s not too late to turn things around. The same thing happened when Carter was in office. Back then the MSM was telling us we were in decline but at that time it was the Japanese that were taking over, they even bought Rockefeller Center. Then Reagan came in and cut taxes and regulation and our economy rebounded. (I know the Japanese were buying real estate during the Reagan years but it took a while for Reagan to undo the damage of the Carter years) The same policies would work today but Obama and the Dems are doing just the opposite of what we need to get our economy going again.
Look at Japan today they have big problems with their low birth rate and their aging population. China has problems too with their one child policy, in the future they won’t have enough workers too take care of their aging population. Some companies are already leaving China to find cheaper labor.
I know it sounds too simple but if we copied what Reagan did by cutting taxes and regulation we would bounce back in no time. You’ve heard about all the billions companies are setting on. Once the right policies are in place that money would be used to buy equipment, expand factories and hire people.
Of course legal immigration is good for America. If it wasn’t for them our population would be declining like all the other western democracies. We need young people paying taxes so all of us babyboomers can get our social security.
My point is the decline we are in is a man-caused-disaster. And it could be reversed but if we stay on this socialist path too long we’ll end up like Europe with chronic unemployment and no growth.
Exactly....but decline is only permanent if we allow it
reddog53 (Diary) Monday, October 11th at 6:23AM EST (link)Our collective inaction and drift from the Constitutional principles has created this ‘decline’ and we can reverse it with sufficient numbers of people expressing their political will ….and with sufficient numbers of people understanding that just like ‘waiting for Superman’ won’t work for education, ‘waiting’ for someone to fix our economy, fix our culture, fix our kids isn’t the answer.
We the people have to individually set goals for ourselves to get our businesses rolling (even as employees). We the people have to influence our culture by ‘not buying’ the things of no value and encouraging things that do.
We the people have to work every day — hard — to do all of this. It’s called being an adult; having discipline; sacrificing to win (what a quaint notion!)
