When you think about Iowa, polling and primary results aside, it feels like Iowa should be a red state. It’s a rural, agricultural state, that I would think would be fairly conservative. In fact, according to Dan’s Chart from yesterday, Iowa is 55%R – 45%D.
So why is Obama leading McCain by 10 points in Iowa?
Is this purely a question of support for ethanol, or are there other factors in play here? Why is Iowa so in the tank for Obama?

Many factors

Farm Subsidies
Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Wednesday, September 17th at 9:30AM EST (link)McCain has never been a friend of ethanol and farm subsidies, part of his attacks on “pork”. I’m suprised it hasn’t hurt a little more in other farming states.
If I recall correctly
Reaper0Bot0 (formerly Han_Pritcher) (Diary) Wednesday, September 17th at 9:49AM EST (link)Senator McCain did not contest the Iowa caucuses. Senator Obama practically lived there for a few months (unlike Chris Dodd, who actually DID live there and enrolled his daughter in an Iowa school. That threw me for at least one loop).
Iowa vaulted Obama forward during the primaries. He spent a lot of time there. I suspect his prolongued presence and McCain’s prolongued absence has something to do with it.
And, of course, the ethanol thing. This is one of the few issues on which I side with Senator McCain.
I’m a lying troll.
Libs in iowa
Nikitas3 (Diary) Wednesday, September 17th at 9:59AM EST (link)Iowa has many urban centers that are liberal and unionized (Des Moines, Iowa City, Sioux City, Davenport etc.) The bureaucrat classes in Des Moines are heavily Democrat. The universities are bastions of liberalism. Many of the farmers are getting ethanol subisides from Democrats. Small towns now get cable TV and can be as influenced by Kouric, Olbermann and MTV as anyone anywhere else. And if a rural girl gets pregnant, along come the Democrats with bags-full of taxpayer cash, buying another vote.
Iowa
The_Fastest_Squirrel (Diary) Wednesday, September 17th at 10:04AM EST (link)Is a funny state (I should know, I’m an Iowa Farmboy). I believe that residents are more conservative by nature, but there is a lot of duality going on. For example, my grandfather was extremely conservative and a solid Republican, but he gladly took CRP money every year.
The Ag lobby is the strongest in the State. It is also interesting that 75% of my High School class left the State after college. Iowa is one of those places that is generally losing population. Jobs are hard to come by and there is little white collar work outside of Des Moines and Iowa City.
Why does this put them in the tank for Obama? I don’t think that anybody knows… other than all of their media is left and ignorance reigns.
my theory
VolunteerPride (Diary) Wednesday, September 17th at 10:22AM EST (link)is that the state has a theological underpinning similar to Minnesota. Lots of Norse and Swede liberal thinking settlers, Lutherans leftists and liberal Catholics. Theology that is liberal produces liberal politics.

Maggie_in_Indiana (Diary) Wednesday, September 17th at 10:31AM EST (link)go to college in nearby states and recruit on their campus’s. We saw this in the primaries. Add that to the corn crop subsidies and that’s a boost. Also there are transplant companies that are Democrat supporters.

dld1717 (Diary) Wednesday, September 17th at 12:52PM EST (link)McCain has never really campaigned in state and has skipped their caucus which I think some people may take as a snub
Iowa still tilts Dem sadly; I mean it even voted for Dukasis
i have asked myself that question for a long time
