Brian McLaren and Barack Obama

The Emerging Pastor Takes a Wrong Turn

I have read Brian McLaren’s work to the profit of my own thinking. He has many good ideas and has stimulated the church in important ways.

However, I think he has a major blind spot when it comes to politics. McLaren recently came out in support of Barack Obama’s campaign for the presidency.

Now, before I go on, I understand how a man like McLaren could support Obama. You say, “Look, this man will begin programs for poor people. He will save the environment. He will bring healing to the racial divide in this country. Most of all, I like the way an Obama presidency feels.”

Aside from the last point, I will not even bother to rebut, though I could. I suspect the feeling about Obama may be the most important part. Many Christians have an averse reaction to conservative Christians in politics because they don’t like the tone. They don’t like the style, the apparent judgmentalness, the hardness of it. McLaren is one of those who has the averse reaction. Though I am far more conservative than McLaren, I’ve had the reaction myself in a room with certain types of people.

Unfortunately, McLaren is making a terrible mistake. If we agree that abortion is a terrible evil, which it is, then we must ask who is aiding that system of killing. The answer is simple. Obama aids it. He praises the funders and practitioners of it. He promises never to let it be limited or constrained. The one place where he is certain he favors free markets and laissez faire is with regard to abortion.

One could say it is but one of many issues, but so what if the issue is properly basic? Protecting unborn life is a yes or no answer pretty much like segregation is. Either you affirm humanity and its most basic rights or you do not. How would McLaren react to a candidate who supported everything he supported except that he proclaimed the question of segregation above his pay grade? Would he support that man or woman? I suspect not.

Brother McLaren, if you can’t go Republican for various reasons, your option would not be cooperation with a program of clear wrong. Your option would be to sit out until you can find a Democrat not actively at odds with one of the most basic tenets of the church (including the early church).

A pastor is freely offering his opinion. Too bad it is completly wrong.

“My friends, it is coming to my attention that a great number of you are fearful of an Obama win. I must stress that you have nothing to fear from Obama winning the election as I have the greatest confidence he would be a most benevolent dictator.” – Hopefully John McCain

I'm just at a loss for words over this.

The Matthew 25 Network is pleased to announce a new resource for pro-life Americans, ProLifeProObama.com. Barack Obama will bring the kind of systemic, grassroots, bottom-up change we need to help families to choose life and reduce the abortion rate in this country.

I do not see how any group that proclaims to be pro-life can in good conscious support Obama. Especially in light of his historical actions to the contrary of that position.

Donald Miller (blue like jazz) does too...

Brian McLaren - Confused, as usual

blh1976 (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 4:26PM EST (link)

Brian McLaren is confused, as usual. His emerging group is really non-evangelical. He does not adhere to many of the basic cornerstone’s of Christianity and is sadly mistaken on his quest for “something more.” Emerging theology is a post-modern melting pot of “anything goes” and is tragically diverting others from the real truth of Christ and who He is.

McLaren doesn’t know what he believes, so the fact he supports Obama is not really that surprising. He’s a rudderless vessel leading other rudderless individuals into a blackhole of thought that really leads to nowhere. Kinda sounds like Obama, except his leadership leads us to a socialist agenda – but at least we’ll feel good while we’re on our way because we’ll have Hope! and Change!

The Nazis received the support of several prominent Jews in their march to taking over the country.

The Jews thought that by supporting him that would temper his rhetoric.

They were sadly wrong.

"A Just Master"

briefsynopsis (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 4:33PM EST (link)

Perhaps Mr. McLaren needs to look past the veneer and get a deeper understanding of just what is on offer with the Socialist Platform which he has decided to support.
Communism, Socialism, Marxism, and Liberalism all require one thing that conservatism does not,..They require a higher being, a “Just Master”, one that will administrate fairness and re-division! Let him serve this false Profit, with one warning from me,..
A Just Master Never Is!!!

Brian McClaren

The guy is focused on a works based gospel, which really is no gospel at all. And he denies foundational truths.

Why would this surprise anybody?

Leave us free to make assertions, and to find in assertions satisfaction and delight; and you may applaud your sceptics and academics …Martin Luther

McClaren hasn't been right on much of anything yet, so this isn't a great suprise

tcgeol (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 4:52PM EST (link)

Liberalism fits perfectly with emerging church ideas. I don’t see how anyone could whole heartedly support emerging theology and not be a leftist to at least some degree.

McClaren has been supporting leftist politics, and Obama specifically, for a good while with his friend Jim Wallis over at God’s Politics.

Just your typical bitter gun- and God-clinger

Even the Left admits we’re Right

What did you expect??

Lincoln Adams Monday, October 6th at 5:06PM EST (link)

What did you expect from a ball-less weenie tot who calls God a “chick”??

How is he a “Christian” anyway if he prescribes to the belief of open theism and denies the atonement of Christ? (Which by the way is pretty close to Obama’s own beliefs, if he even believes anything at all.)

"A Just Master" redux

briefsynopsis (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 5:23PM EST (link)

Mr Mclaren should look past the Veneer of the Obama rhetoric, and try to get his head around what is truly on offer; The role of a “Just Master”

Communism, Marxism, Socialism all require that their Fairness, and Redistribution schemes involve the use of a Just Master to administrate them.

Capitalist based Conservatism instills that the individual is the determiner of his own fate, and when applied using the Judeo-Christian value system, has proven to be the greatest force of good the world has known.

Always remember and never forget; A Just Master never is,….

History Repeats

This isn’t really surprising – the leaders of the Emerging Church movement and many of the other “new evangelical” leaders (yes, I’m talking about you Rick Warren) are taking the same road that the mainline denominations took in the fist half of the last century – adopting liberal economic and foreign policy views in the name of “peace and social justice”, and hoping that will make them acceptable to the dominant culture. They will end preaching appeasement and socialism and ignoring the gospel.

Never heard of him, but

olsmithie (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 6:31PM EST (link)

what’s one more fruitcake in the mix.

I recall hearing that it is:

“Better you have a millstone put around your neck and be cast into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to stumble”

I’m, of course making the leap of logic that advocating killing small children is akin to ” causing them to stumble.”

Could be mistaken there..

Guess this guy should check his collar size

Another lukewarm supposedly Christian.

Unfortunately he doesn’t have to answer to me, he will have to explain himself one day…

“Well I thought we could get him to stop advocating killing babies if we sat around and sang Coom By Yah…”

Really sad.

People wonder why so many folks think Christians are crackpots. Look at this guy and the source of the confusion is obvious.

Maybe Jim Wright could straighten him out…

Brian McLaren is a heretic

Bill S (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 7:00PM EST (link)

His positions on Obama are dead in line with his social gospel beliefs. You’d have to be blind to not see that Obama fits McLaren’s worldview to a T. And I’m also not surprised that Donald Miller is in the same boat…they’re both cut from the same cloth.

Heretic on Christianity, heretic on politics.

Life is not a fixable Obama error

David123 (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 7:28PM EST (link)

Damage to the unborn, or to an idealogical Supreme Court, cannot be undone by voting Obama out of office in 2012.

Obama is wrong on lots of other issues, but the life/judicial activism issue can’t be fixed for decades if Obama is elected.

Not a "Wrong Turn" - McLaren was never headed in the right direction.

John Ronning (Diary) Monday, October 6th at 8:56PM EST (link)

In 2006 McLaren listed as one of his favorite books “Sex and the Single Savior” in which the author (homosexual marxist Yale prof. Dale Martin) imagines a homosexual Jesus. McLaren wrote a blurb on the back cover saying how much he has learned from Martin’s formidible, ground breaking book.
