An Open Letter to Rick Warren

Dear Pastor Warren,

I am writing to you to express concern about something that may get lost when you host the candidate forum with John McCain and Barack Obama at Saddleback Valley Community Church which is likely to receive national attention. The decision to address you on this question in an open letter comes with some trepidation, but I have attempted to reach you through your media agency, the church email, and your personal email with no effect. I hope this message in a public forum will come to your attention instead of sitting unread in a pile of fan mail and requests for favors.

You see, I understand and appreciate who you are and what you’ve done. You are one of the most widely known pastors in the nation and have written one of the best-selling non-fiction books of the past several decades. I have many times walked into friends’ homes and have seen The Purpose-Driven Life sitting on coffee tables or bookshelves. When Time named you one of the most influential evangelicals in America, I agreed and applauded the selection.

During this period of well-deserved fame, you have been a good steward of the blessings God has provided. You gave away 90% of your massive royalties and repaid your church for years of salary. Instead of following the sometimes frivolous paths of other celebrity pastors, you focused in on the suffering of AIDS victims in Africa. You and your wife Kay have been outstanding role models. You have avoided making intemperate statements. Neither have you become some kind of caricature of the pastor in politics, ready to drop anything for a talking-heads appearance anywhere, anytime.

In your news release about the candidate forum, you suggest that you will avoid “gotcha” questions. The topics highlighted in the release are poverty, HIV/AIDS, climate and human rights with a special emphasis on character and leadership rather than programmatic details.

There is much to be said for rising above partisan politics. After all, the church is on a mission from God to all the earth. It is emphatically not intended to be a tool for either one of the political parties. We are after bigger game than a balanced budget, the right kind of welfare state, or term limits. We seek redemption for a world we believe has lost its way.

However, there are certain issues that demand the church’s involvement, issues of basic justice, issues of life and death. Perhaps the least ambiguous of those issues is the protection of babies throughout pregnancy and immediately after birth. We live in a culture that, strangely, acts as though unborn children are like genies that can be stuffed back into the bottle. We know that isn’t true. We know that abortions end with little piles of bloody flesh and bone. Fetuses don’t merely cease to exist. They experience violent physical death.

There are many doctrinal issues that divide Christians, but the protection of young life should not be one of them. Pastor Warren, as Protestants, we are part of a tradition that loves to point to the early church — the young church so pure in our estimation — still uncorrupted by the power of empire. That church, that persecuted church, was a tireless defender of life. Early Christians counseled against abortion and actively rescued infants exposed to the predators and the wild by Roman parents who vested few rights in human beings shortly after birth. A child of the wrong sex or one who looked weak could be abandoned. How strange it is that today a candidate claiming to be a Christian could oppose the Born Alive Infants Protection Act or a ban on partial birth abortion! To do so is to disclaim not only a major part of Christian teaching, but also a cultural advance in favor of protecting the weak and innocent.

Pastor, you know both John McCain and Barack Obama. You know where they stand on the protection of innocent human life. While it is a fine thing to allow both men to expound upon their experience, their leadership ability, and their attitudes toward challenges of the future like AIDS or climate change, I submit that you would do a disservice to your congregation and to the church at large if you host both candidates and ignore the issue that divides them more clearly than almost any other. Barack Obama has indicated a willingness to change his position on a number of issues, including drilling for oil, the way the Iraq war is conducted, and the proper understanding of gun ownership rights. But his position with regard to abortion rights is positively adamantine. Abortion on demand is non-negotiable. McCain, on the other hand, has consistently voted against a broad abortion license.

Some would respond to me, though I doubt you would, that I am emphasizing one issue unfairly. My answer is that this issue is basic. If the year were 1958, instead of 2008, do you think it would be right to host such a forum and ignore segregation, knowing one candidate was ardently in favor of the separation of the races? You and I both know that it would be wrong to gloss over a glaring breach of that kind. We both know many in the church were wrong in just that way. (It is a terrible irony of history that Mr. Obama now stands with those who favor the persistent removal of an entire class of human beings from legal protection through legal fiat. How I wish it were not so.)

My hope is that you will make no promise to leave the foundational issue of the sanctity of life untouched in this forum. If the lack of that promise means the forum may not take place, then I suggest it would be better to cancel it.

With respect,

Hunter Baker

Amen, brother.

And Pastor Warren, please do not forget that in making a decision as to whether to mention the slaughter of unborn children, they are the least of His brethren.

But do not hold your breath. I do not trust Rick Warren. I have read too much about this man and I am uncomfortable with his treatment of “scripture”
What you said was on the mark…but do not expect Warren to follow through. He is more of a “kumbaya” person than I think most people realize.
If he does follow through, I will really eat my crow…swallow my pride and apologize.

completely. Rick Warren is a liberal-humanist type.

His “SLOW” model to reduce the number of people infected with AIDS stands for;

Supply condoms, Limit the number of partners, Offer needle exchanges to addicts, and Wait for sex as long as possible.

**Offer needles?

Wait as “long as possbile” for sex?**

No Scriptural authority exists for such a position

Not bad. And well written, I’ll give you that. It’s going great until paragraph six when it starts, “however…”

But what I am reading is that Rick Warren isn’t going to throw out any hardball questions. Then you are asking Rick Warren to throw out a hardball question exclusively to Obama. You are probably disgusted that anyone would think abortion is a right choice and that’s fine. But when you walk the middle line you will see there are people on the other side who are completely disgusted with your ideas just as you are with theirs. It just seems that if we are going to bust Obama’s skull in front of a group of church goers about Obama we might as well start asking McCain why he cheated on his first wife etc etc. Kinda see where I am trying to go with that one. A good effort on your part and you have every right to stand where you do, but don’t hold your breath. =/

Raising the issue of abortion isn’t intended to blacken Obama’s eye alone. As you yourself point out, forcing McCain to make a pro-life stand will loose him support of pro-life voters just as forcing the big O to make a pro-abortion stand will cost him pro-life voters.

The purpose of a forum like this isn’t to argue the issues, they’re to force the candidates to take a stand on the issues and defend thier positions. Hunter spends a lot of time talking about why this issue should be covered in a forum held in a church.

Of course, forcing both candidates to state a position and then stand by that position might hurt one more than the other, but that’s what you get for being a slimy scoundrel (though I won’t go naming names).

Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.

That's a nice false comparison you've got there...

redbaron Wednesday, August 13th at 11:57AM EST (link)

Show me where in McCain’s policies he advocates the right to cheat on your spouse. Show me where he proposes using taxpayer dollars to pay for hotel-room rendezvous.

A candidate forum is a place to discuss policy, no? And questions about abortion are relevant to policy discussion at least as much as any other topic Warren proposes to discuss.

Hunter, even if I completely disagreed with your position on abortion (and I don’t), I’d have to say this is an excellent letter. It’s well thought-out, well structured, and well-written. You hit exactly the right tone; firm without being confrontational. You explain why you have a legitimate expectation for the topic of abortion to be covered and ask him to do so in a clear and respectful manner.

I wish this kind of discourse was the norm in American politics.

Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.

Anybody who is disgusted with the idea that unborn children need protection from people (and I use that term loosely) who would carve them in small pieces or immerse them in a saline solution unto death or jam a sharp instrument in their skull and suck out their brain so the “mother” doesn’t have to be inconvenienced by an “unwanted child” is perfectly welcome to be disgusted with me.

And I’d be happy to increase their disgust in any number of ways that, were I to discuss them in any detail I’d get banned from posting here.

I think you are right on the money with Warren.

Look at the foundation of Saddle Back and then at Obama.

This little forum thing that is coming up will be a farce.

Whats more worrying to me, though, is that there are many Christians who will follow Rick Warren before following Christ.

What do I mean by that? Simple, I know of many Christians who will read and do exactly what Rick Warren says in his books, but have a hard time picking up and reading the Bible, let alone following it.

quite enjoy watching Obama explain to the American people why he supports murdering babies after they have been born survived being aborted.

9 months in the womb’s not enough – you’re still not “human.” 30 secs. outside the womb? 5 minutes? 1 hour? 1 day?
I mean, a 6-month old baby can’t take care of itself. Expect for breathing on its own. Lets give new mothers a one-year, money-back guarantee. If, after 12 months, the “mommy-thing” doesn’t fit your lifestyle, you can toss your little nipper in the nearest incinerator and move on to the next best thing. chop-chop.

Paul Seale (Diary) Wednesday, August 13th at 12:56PM EST (link)

I will never forget reading one of Saddle Back’s core beliefs (or used to be) that everyone is essentially good except that there is this sin problem that seperates us from God.

That is humanism. The Bible teaches the depravety of man – that we can do no good without God.

Like it or not, I would agree that Rick Warren’s belief system at least on the surface seems to reflect a level of humanism.

I would also note that the belief in a war on poverty, declared by the government will probably be in Warren’s back pocket and will be brought up.

Of course that plays to Obama and just about every communist on the block, and unfortunately many Christians are being sucked into this argument without realizing the lack of scriputural authority.

Warren is a liberal..and he proves himself such every time he injects himself into politics...

AceInTX (Diary) Wednesday, August 13th at 1:21PM EST (link)

I’ve been to two different churches who have gone through the Purpose Driven Life and it’s Bible study…and I know what it’s about and what’s wrong with it…He uses different translations to try and make scripture conform to his points rather than the other way around! For instance. if the KJV verse doesn’t say what he wants it to…he goes to the NIV since it seems to make his point when it does not! He takes scripture out of context and his whole thesis upon which his book is based is about self affirmation and self centered view of the world. It’s sickening to me how many ave fallen for this false prophet!

As for the Debate and it’s topics, For proof that he has a liberal agenda, you only have to look at the issues to be discussed here:

Where AIDs is concerned…I wonder if the subject of promiscuity will be discussed and the fact that indulging in high risk behaviors which are prohibited by scripture are the primary cause of AIDs?

Climate?…We can assume this has to do with Global Warming!…that applies to scripture how? The only scripture that comes to mind that applies is the one that describes the last days…they will, “worship nature rather than nature’s God”!

Poverty?…No doubt the questions will address why the Government should be charitable with our money rather than God’s command for us individually to give a man your shirt also if he asks for your coat, (Paraphrase)!

Human rights?…No doubt the focus here will be Gitmo and Bush’s inhumanity to our terrorist enemies!

I don’t want to make this about McCain or take pot shots but I can’t help but ask why he agreed to this in the first place…You can bet the Golden Child would have never agreed to a debate in front of Thomas Road Baptist Church, (The late Dr. Falwell’s church), or on the 700 club or before the Christian Coalition…well…McCain would never agree to a debate in front of the “Agents of intolerance” either so I don’t know why I’m surprised…or disappointed for that matter…but I am!

The “Big Tent” analogy isn’t the correct one…the correct one is a MAGNET…we need to be a MAGNET that draws these independents in who are sick and tired of what’s going on in WashingtonFred Thompson

sometimes it feels like people compare people to dogs… no1 likes to harm a puppy… puppies are so cute!! who would harm a puppy?!? but when that puppy grows up and becomes a hassle.. alot of people just leave them in the middle of nowhere or send them to the spca for a gassing…

lemme throw out a hypothetical here…lets just say there are organizations that try to limit the transmition of aids around the world with condoms… now say they where all banned or defunded because condoms dont fit into youre world view.. now say women in poorer areas of the world.. alot that live with no freedom at all because they perhaps live in cultures that dont allow it or they live in bondage… well they contract hiv and also become pregnant.. by consequance of youre world view of how things should be a child will be born with a death sentence. will the child live long enough to bury its mother or will the mother be the one burying the child?

now lets say that this isnt a hypothectical question but is a reality.. there are alot of orphans in africa with hiv… care to comment?

Need a better argument

RJD (Diary) Wednesday, August 13th at 1:52PM EST (link)

Women with no rights or who are kept in bondage probably don’t have “mates” that care about condoms in the first place. I’d say their freedom is the paramount issue, not the (forced) sex.

Organizations that actually cared about decreasing STDs/VDs and unwanted pregnancies would promote abstinence first, as the only true safe way to prevent those things. If you go into a culture that is already rife with disease, and you claim “safe sex” by way of condoms, then people are only going to continue said practice. Maybe even more so. If they haven’t stopped due to the diseases already, why would they stop if you provide “safe sex?”

You go in and you convince people to stop engaging in practices that are a detriment to their survival. Condoms are one tool in that fight. But, they are not the only tool. Ultimately, you must change people’s behavior.

Nice red herring

You invent a hypothetical, then say the hypothetical is real, then blame Hunter for something or other (I still have not figured that part out yet) in relation to your ‘real’ hypothetical.

So what exactly about Hunter’s letter do you disagree with? It appears that you are trying to support Obama’s opposition to the Born-Alive thing by justifying infanticide – the murder of inconvenient babies because their life would suck anyway.

Promotion of condoms=promotion of promiscuity

A_Texan (Diary) Wednesday, August 13th at 2:33PM EST (link)

I recall somewhere that Hayek once noted that where socialism produced bad effects, the socialists often successfully point to these effects as a reason for more socialism.

So too with the sexual revolution, it seems. The sexual revolution, with its mockery of marriage and its celabration of venereal liberation, has had disastrous consequences for public health. But instead of calling into question the sacred tenents of the revolution, the demand now is that the government–i.e., taxpayers– and the whole world all participate in a mass effort to make the whole world safe for fornication, further promoting the message that promiscuity is the expected way of life–the norm in a statistical and moral sense.

The trick is that the radicals insist the current situation as unalterable facts–that people, (especially teenagers, Africans, etc) are just promiscuous–screwing around uncontrollably–all of ‘em–that ideas have no consequences, that the radicals’ overwhelming dominance in the media has no effect on people’s actions, that the sexual revolution was just a revolution in honesty, etc. Rubbish.

You do realize what we consider in the united states as rape… as a sexual assualt… in other cultures they view it as property damage? in alot of those other cultures they practice honor killings as well.. its thier world view on women being “promiscuos” which in the end makes her dead… now in those societies… where women dont have rights but are property… youre world view gives the same results … DEAD… but threw different methods

I suggest you get your emotions under control before Moe comes around with his Blam stick.

how does supplying condoms to women in Africa raise them from poverty???

And how does A_Texan being against the gov’t distribution of condoms equate to disdain for women.

As far as the Mormons go you need to learn to separate the wheat from the chaff. You probably also blame the Pope for the actions of a minority of Priests instead of blaming the priests for their own action.

great discussion, great letter. The fact that it was so hard to get a message to Warren through his church channels speaks volumes to me. Saddleback, when I visited the campus a few years ago, reminded me supremely of Disneyland. I was there for training for “Celebrate Recovery” and I heard Warren speak, as well as the Rock Stars of the Christian self-help movement, Henry Cloud and John Townsend. I love the work of the latter duo. Their books have helped me a lot. But Warren’s books and his comments seemed contrived and threatening. “If pastors don’t support recovery ministry they are in denial” sort of thing.
In any case, I quit Celebrate Recovery because I found my Christian recovery buddies to be pro choice on abortion and euthanasia. I still struggle with my depression (my issue for Celebrate Recovery) but I can’t get “help” from folks who deny basic Christian teaching on life and death.
The seeping of relativistic teaching into the very walls of the church has been the most frustrating issue of my existence. Hooray for all of you who take a stand.

please read it again if you dont get it.. anyways if you dont get it… it could be my fault for trying to respond to a crudely written rant about conspiracy theories involving a “venerial liberation”, TAXES TAXES TAXES, teens and african love, and a shadowy orginization that controls media… how can i respond to **THAT?!?

heres a great quote from you that is just well… super..

the demand now is that the government–i.e., taxpayers– and the whole world all participate in a mass effort to make the whole world safe for fornication, further promoting the message that promiscuity is the expected way of life–the norm in a statistical and moral sense.

i mean come on … the whole world make an effort to make the whole world safe from… people from the opposite gender? well if thats what the whole world wants…. claps

Edwards wasn’t faithful to his vows…when we talk about Marriage as being the bast way to prevent AIDs, we are referring to marriage as it should be…and as it’s prescribed in the Bible…a monogamous relationship where a man and woman are faithful to one another and restrict their sexual activity to one another. obviously unfaithful spouses endanger both individuals in a relationship and increases the risk of spreading disease and pregnancy…that’s why we call that behavior a sin!

Sinful behavior has negative results…it’s why God prefaced his laws in the Old Testament by saying, “Do these things that you might live longer in the land I give you”! There is a reason for each and every one of his commandments…That’s what I’d like to see Warren communicate during the debate…but I won’t hold my breath!

The “Big Tent” analogy isn’t the correct one…the correct one is a MAGNET…we need to be a MAGNET that draws these independents in who are sick and tired of what’s going on in WashingtonFred Thompson

therefore...if you don't engage in the risky behavior...you can't spread the disease

What exactly is your point Della?

AceInTX (Diary) Thursday, August 14th at 8:07PM EST (link)

Rape has no place in this argument because Rapists don’t use condoms…distributing Condoms won’t stop the spread of the disease when it is caused by a rape…so what exactly is your point?

Condom distribution and needle exchange programs have failed everywhere it’s been tried….without fail because the act of the government distributing the tools to engage in these risky behaviors increases these risky behaviors…

I note you’ve been here for two weeks…could you be trolling?
