An Open Letter to My Fellow Christians Regarding Barack Obama

Why the Audacity of Hope Is a Terrible Campaign Theme

Barack Obama hopes to make a dent in evangelical Christian and Catholic support for the Republican Party. At first glance, he’s a good bet to do it. John McCain, his opponent, comes from a generation that reflexively clams up about religion.

Both men claim to be Christians, but Obama has mastered the rhetoric. He can speak in soaring tones about the kingdom, the glory, and redemption. Most importantly, he speaks of hope, which is a key Christian theme. The world isn’t destined to end in simple destruction. This whole thing is going somewhere. Our lives matter and the choices we make matter. We must never give in to despair. That is the message of hope.

In addition to hope, Obama speaks in terms of humanity, not America. Dean Barnett is disturbed that Obama doesn’t focus on America and that he poses as a citizen of the world, but this, too, is a key Christian theme. Nations burn, but we have a higher citizenship under God that remains. Most Christians know that they should love America and be thankful for it, but also that they should see the fate of humanity as interconnected.

Hope and Humanity. Obama is running a Christian campaign. It is one largely framed in the secularized and sanitized Christianity of the modern left, and regrettably, it suffers the same infirmities. It is full of Christian aspiration, but is desperately lacking in soul.

The problem with this secularized gospel is that it loses something at the very heart of the faith. The lost essence is a stubborn insistence upon the sanctity of life.

One of the key distinguishing features of the early Christian church was the determination of its members to save lives whether that meant gladiatorial combatants, plague victims, or helpless babes. Their conviction often took the form of rescuing infants from exposure to both the elements and the predatory instincts of wild animals. The Greco-Roman world, for all its admirable qualities, placed a very low value on life. Christians held the opposite opinion. For them, every life was sacred. Every person bore the image of God.

Some, like Doug Kmiec, seem to believe Obama is a deep well on the matter of preserving unborn life and that he will surprise us, but there is nothing in the record to support it. To date, he has proved himself to be as certain a supporter of Planned Parenthood as any politician on the planet. Remember this bit from a speech last summer:

There will always be people, many of goodwill, who do not share my view on the issue of choice. On this fundamental issue, I will not yield and Planned Parenthood will not yield.

And then this one:

I have worked on these issues for decades now. I put Roe at the center of my lesson plan on reproductive freedom when I taught Constitutional Law. Not simply as a case about privacy but as part of the broader struggle for women’s equality. Steve and Pam will tell you that we fought together in the Illinois State Senate against restrictive choice legislation—laws just like the federal abortion laws, the federal abortion bans that are cropping up. I’ve stood up for the freedom of choice in the United States Senate and I stand by my votes against the confirmation of Judge Roberts and Samuel Alito [Applause]

Barack Obama is utterly at odds with the entire Christian tradition when it comes to the preservation of unborn life. Utterly, unquestionably against it.

In addition, this rock-ribbed support for abortion rights is in tension with the message of his campaign.

Hope. Where is the hope in abortion? What is an abortion but the act of someone who has lost hope? The platform of hope would be to promise to find more and better ways to support unwed mothers. Can a sweeping, transcendent campaign do no better than to advocate death as a solution to unwed childbearing? Not even a campaign that seems to promise a new age?

Humanity. The loss of protections for unborn children has been predicated upon a re-definition of what it means to be human. Those who have not emerged from the birth canal are somehow less than fully human. They are considered less than human for reasons of law, not biology. This is the same legal philosophy that protected practices of slavery and segregation. If anyone should be able to see the danger inherent in such a jurisprudence and argue against it, it should be an African-American constitutional law professor.

No, this Hope and this Humanity is a vacuous concept designed to be filled by the rapturous imaginations of the politician’s listeners.

I think you're partially incorrect....

The more I talk with my fellow born-again Christians who are voting for Obama, the more I find it’s less about Obama than clinging on to their old liberal values.

For instance, I know one married couple who is voting for Obama for one very simple reason: he’s more likely to expand the role of IRS. That’s it. This married couple, both are born-again Christians and work in IRS. The other example is my dear friend’s mother, who is a teacher, also a born-again Christian, however, she is going to vote for Obama for no reason other than she belongs to a teacher’s union, a source of Democratic support.

Even so, I think such people are still a small segment of both evangelical Christian and Catholic groups. Oh, I don’t doubt for a minute that they’re going to vote for Obama in much larger numbers, but not enough to change the largest voting bloc over to Democratic side.

This is the hope that he can quiet us, and control us. For the rest of us, he offers the same failed policies liberals have offered for decades.

Ironically, it is the minorities to whom he claims to offer hope that will suffer the most under his policies. Their place in society will be cemented for a long time to come.

Christianity thrived under Rome, and can thrive under Obama, however, if he wins many lives will be lost and any Christians that vote for him will have that blood on their hands.

Obama is a leftist and this fact has been figured out earlier and by more people, including Christians, than for any other Dem in my lifetime. That’s why he is favorably viewed by only 31% of whites as per a CBS poll even after winning the Dem nomination.

80% mention Rev Wright when asked what they know of Obama.

The converse is true as well

I’ve been voting since 1980. And though I believe in limited government, and balanced budgets, basically the Republicans were clever enough to make themselves the “party of Christians” and paint the Democrats as the “party of the anti-Christ”.

And unfortunately, for the past 20 years, they got millions of votes by simply putting “pro-life” on their brochures, then went off to serve 6 years in the Senate – and no one ever questioned what else they did.

Bush walked into the White House with the full intention of invading Iraq – and 400,000+ Iraqis have died as a result of his lies. He has robbed Americans of their jobs and ability to support their families by making deals to send their jobs overseas so their CEOs can make more money. He robbed our treasury by giving tax reductions to the uber-rich and borrowing it from China. He and John McCain enjoyed a weekend on the ranch in the middle of Katrina where thousands of our country’s poor cried out for help. He’s shown arrogance and pride towards his own country – and truthfully – there’s nothing in John McCain’s campaign that looks any different. In fact it’s more obvious that he is owned by the rich and the lobbyists by proposing that workers pay income taxes on their employer-paid insurance (as a way to drive them off of company plans). I see nothing in these positions that make this a Christian choice for president – read proverbs if you’re in any doubt – or the sermon on the mount.

And back to voting on the basis of the abortion issue – in the 20 years that I’ve been voting, there have been no laws that have changed the status of abortion – it’s just as legal now as it was 20 years ago.

Frankly, there is more to America than what is happening in the abortion clinics. For those of us who are Christians, we should not be putting the responsibility of convincing people that abortion is wrong or that pre-marital sex is wrong in the hands of the government.

The Republican party got a lot of votes for free – and they have nothing to show for it except years of “oh – it was the Democrats” and the promise that “oh – we need to control the Supreme Court – so give us a few more years” and I can’t think of a single legislator who really thinks the day will come when the Supreme Court really overturns Roe v. Wade and thousands of abortion clinics put “closed” outside. Frankly, they’ve simply been shaking hands with Dobson, Falwell, and others for all these years – and laughing all the way to their swearing in.

Jesus never told his disciples to “go and get control of the governments and change the laws…” He said that the kingdom of God is within – and therefore to go and make disciples.

From now on, I will not expect politicians to change moral choices of teenagers – and not listen to any promises that they will. And I will continue to contribute to the CareNet center and offer my home as refuge for a teenager who needs help, and to work in residential treatment centers to help teenage girls make a difference.

So, I’m done falling for the same load of crap that Bush or McCain gets my vote because I’m an evangelical – and as I canvass – that’s how I’m going to explain my vote. I’m not voting for a pastor – I’m voting for a president. If there is a Republican who I agree with on when it comes to economic solutions or foreign policy, or other issues – they will earn my vote – but I’m not falling for that load of crap that got my vote for 20 years.

Bitter much, 45-min wonder?

Oh, and FWIW, Obama won’t stop at aborting babies, he’s in favor of infanticide too. But then, my guess is you are too, troll.

Plenty of Laws Passed . . .

Hunter Baker (Diary) Sunday, July 27th at 6:13PM EST (link)

There have been plenty of laws passed restricting abortion by GOP majorities in the states. However, due to Supreme Court jurisprudence they have been necessarily very limited in scope.

Why,

Obama has not shown any arrogance, or pride in his country. That’s what appeals to ThinkFirst. And, of course, you’re right, he appears to be quite taken with Obie’s positions, appeasement and socialism.

been voting Republican because they are conservative to vote for Obama is because they believe the 2nd coming is about to occur…..and the rest will not be voting for the Imitation Christ.

Odd thinking..

The problem with that line of thought is how limited it is, Obama plans far more then just allowing infanticide to continue, he supports the death of Covenant Marriage, and he is determined to shoe horn the Homosexual agenda into not only Churches, but Schools as well.

Obama offers nothing to Christianity other then a 20 year track record of TUCC membership..

Obama's Hope, I believe, is that...

PatrickMurdock (Diary) Sunday, July 27th at 9:28PM EST (link)

Obama’s Hope, I believe, is that people will be come more dependent on government for every area of their life.

And that as opposed to the Christian teaching that “all things are possible through God”, which to me is a statement of individual empowerment – Obama wants people to believe that “all things are possible through the government.” Need healthcare, no problem, we’ll take care of it; can’t pay your mortgage, no worries, we’ll bail you out; pregnant and concerned that you’ll be “punished with a baby”, we’ll make sure you can get an abortion whenever you want.

Beachfront property and the homeless

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Sunday, July 27th at 10:41PM EST (link)

Bill Clinton says that we risk losing 50 feet of Manhattan Island in fifty years if we (does not include VIPs like him and Al) don’t park our SUVs in favor of My Friend Flicka; trash Edison’s bulb in favor of risking mercury poisoning death and give up central air/heat for raising windows and Dickensian fireplaces and the attendant London smog and rats.

The greatest cause of death among the homeless is frostbite, etc.

The difference between dems and repubs is that repubs want the Homeless in Detroit to live as long as their Ft Lauderdale brethren.

[Howard Dean says that dems want children to eat at night but repubs don't. Remember?]
