OK, so I went from neutral on Grayson/Paul a few months ago, pointing out that he answered less than ideally to a question about abortion. I eventually chalked that up to his brand of literal, libertarian federalism, and articles by Mr. Erickson and others made me feel better about the whole prospect of this man winning the Republican primary. So I ended up rooting for Paul.
But now, I am hearing noises on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Anything less than unequivocal support for this is troublesome. I know he backpedaled, and I’m sure he doesn’t have a racist bone in his body, and I understand where he is coming from. He basically agrees with the 1883 Supreme Court ruling that overturned the 1964 Act’s progenitor, the Civil Rights Act of 1875.
Worse, he just canceled at the 11th hour a confirmed MTP appearance. This is really bad. David Gregory is as liberal as they come, but if you have the courage of your convictions and believe in the conservative cause, you can walk into any lion’s den and come out smelling like a rose no matter how liberal the questions may be tainted. It’s bad enough to pass on an opportunity to state your case for why Kentucky should elect you as their next senator in a respected venue with a national audience. It’s worse to flake out like a prima donna and cancel at the 11th hour. He did this because he does not want us to know where he stands on fundamentally important matters regarding the national government’s role in regulating our lives. And he does not want us to know why. And he does not feel that his rationale can withstand the scrutiny of a few pointed questions.
So I know I’m supposed to rally around the flag and support the Republican and all that. However, we may have a problem brewing in Kentucky.

Scope (Diary) Saturday, May 22nd at 9:32AM EST (link)I read a tweet on the right side of the screen here a day or so ago that said- We just don’t want too many Paul types in DC. I agree wholeheartedly.
It took less than 24 hours for Rand Paul’s real libertarian streak to rear it’s head. He was able to keep it in check long enough to win the R nomination, but, I don’t think he will be able to keep a lid on it until November. The Dems will now paint the entire Republican party as being radically right and too extreme. Of all things to put your foot in your mouth on, the Civil Rights Act. The left has called the R’s and Conservatives racist, it is a dishonest accusation, and used only to divide the races even further. Paul’s statements will only further harm us in fighting that unfortunate and untrue label. No matter Paul’s meaning, many will only see the segregated lunch counters of the distant past. I doubt Paul can recover.
It's my understanding...
rbdwiggins (Diary) Saturday, May 22nd at 10:06AM EST (link)the tape of the interview was withheld until “after” Paul secured the nomination.
If we run from this fight, the race card and its premise will be validated, and it will forever be front and center in the Democrats’ campaign playbook.
Engagement is the only way to expose the extreme hate and racism of the modern Liberal/Progressive coalition. It’s also the least expected course of action, and one I believe Liberals/Progressives are least prepared to fight in public.

jazzycmk (Diary) Saturday, May 22nd at 2:59PM EST (link)It is tiresome, but liberals will always play the race card knowing that it is difficult to prove a negative (how do you prove that you’re not racist?). But if we begin talk of Paul being a mistake that will be like moths to the flame for the left and their “throw everything and see what sticks” mode of smearing.
Paul is not racist but in his inexperience he walked into a bear trap. He should have just said, “Of course, I unequivocally believe in every aspect of the Civil Rights Act.” There will be plenty of other issues on which he can talk about government overreach. Extending it to the Civil Rights Act was only going to get you into trouble. (side note – why did that even come up? What was they guy, like 8 years old when that passed?)
Paul got exposed for not being a professional politician which is part of his appeal to the Tea Party. He learned an important lesson about the snares the liberal media will set for you. He needs some seasoning and coaching, but I think he’ll be OK.
For me, the media has no credibility on criticizing race-related matters when they gave Harry Reid a pass for his Obama comments. Acceptable candidate because he’s light skinned? And only speaks with a Negro accent when necessary? Are you frigging kidding me? Imagine if anyone with an R after his / her name said anything remotely close to that.

redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, May 22nd at 11:48AM EST (link)Paul did right by cancelling MTP.
The leftist machine has found a new target for the 2010 election, and Rand Paul is it. We shouldn’t forget what they attempted to do to Fred T when he represented the worst person in the world to the left.
The left is trying to make Rand Paul the face of the tea party and continue libelling all of us as racists.
I agree with Mark Levin. Rand Paul is running for a senate seat in KY and he will do well to skirt the propaganda mills, for his own good and the good of the conservative movement.
We have other tea party candidates who will be able to present our case.
It is funny, in a way, how this was played by the leftists. All week, ABC radio news was shouting out the headline that Rand Paul is the tea party candidate. Rand Paul is the tea party candidate. Over. And Over. And Over. So I kept hearing it and wondering, WHY????? Now it is crystal clear. Stephanopoulus and ABC had this little crap bullet all loaded up and ready to fire after the election, so they could smirk and posture innocently to their audience on tv: Gee, I guess the tea partiers are racists after all.

redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, May 22nd at 12:15PM EST (link)a lot, for Paul and all of us, is riding on whether a majority of KY voters will trouble to follow a logical constitutional argument, versus being programmed by ads on tv this election season.
I feel confident that ABC et al have been squirrelling away their magic bullets against Paul for after the primary election. What we saw on tv this week is tip of iceberg. They’ve isolated Paul as the tea party candidate and will commence firing as of today to try and muscle him into an argument. In their minds it isn’t about KY. It’s about the tea party and conservative values. Remember, never let a crisis go to waste. Scapegoating Paul as some kind of bigot will not be laid to rest by facts or truth. If that were the case, the only news channel would be FOX already. We’re not there yet.

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Saturday, May 22nd at 1:05PM EST (link)I do think that esp over time, Rand Paul will win and be an asset on the MSM because he voices the raw tea party revulsion at Obama’s socialism and he is just such an honest and appealing person. Rand Paul is correct regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Spiral (Diary) Saturday, May 22nd at 4:54PM EST (link)Rand Paul is correct regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in the sense that one need not be a racist to be skeptical about having a federal law that allows nearly every business in the country to be sued whenever someone feels like they weren’t treated fairly because of their race.
We wonder why our country has become so litigation oriented and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 represents one of the reasons for this.
We could, for example, allow competition to handle the issue of descrimination by businesses. For example, if JC Penney has a policy of not hiring qualified African-Americans and Sears is willing to hire qualified African-Americans, we could let the free market determine which business is to be more successful.
Let’s put it this way. If someone opens up a business and decides to only hire Korean-Americans, this might be considered racist, but at least businessman or businesswoman is creating jobs and participating in the productive sector of the economy.
Would we rather continue to make lawyers wealthy and drive business out of the United States because everytime a business announces a job opening that business is subject to an anti-discrimination lawsuit depending who they ultimately hire?
When every promotion, demotion, hiring and firing decision by every business in the United States is second guessed by lawyers, judges and juries, we can’t by surprised if our economy isn’t as vibrant as it could be. Fewer lawsuits would likely mean more jobs and higher incomes for everyone, regardless of race.
But the promoters of litigation lottery won’t let us live in a free society. So, here we are.
