As I have stated before, I am a full-spectrum conservative. I believe in common-sense, Constitutional conservatism based on the “three-legged stool” – fiscal, social, and national defense conservatism. All three of those legs are important, but my heart is especially with the national defense concerns.
Many long time Redstate readers know me from the posts I started writing on my first deployment. Some of you may think of me as the guy who keeps writing posts nagging us to remember that we are still at war.
As a veteran who served two tours in Iraq and saw good men and women lost, this issue resonates with me more than any other. Although our government has been bent and twisted from the founders’ intent, it still holds true that the central role of the President of the United States is that of Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
Many have watched with dismay over the last few years as the military has been shackled with insane rules of engagement, resources that matched political expediency rather than mission requirements, more concern over the cultural sensibilities of our enemies than the lives of our Soldiers, and frankly – a CinC who appears to lose more sleep over a bad day at golf than over the deaths of America’s finest.
All of the GOP candidates (with the possible exception of Ron Paul), would clearly be much better than President Obama. Other bloggers have made the general case for Rick Perry for President, including a group of Redstate front-pagers. He is a good choice for many reasons. But the most important reason to me – of all of the people seeking the nomination, it is my heartfelt opinion that he is the best choice for Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Governor Perry is a veteran himself, who flew missions around the globe. He understands what it means to wear the uniform. However, we only have to look at the likes of John Murtha, John Kerry, and Ron Paul to know that by itself, prior service isn’t enough.
Governor Perry already has experience as the Commander in Chief of the Texas National Guard, and he has a reputation in Texas for reaching out to both veterans and gold star families. Marcus Lutrell, the man who lived through what was, at that time, the deadliest single day for American Special Forces, is a personal friend of the Perry family, and endorsed Governor Perry with a touching video:
The following video shows Governor Perry’s heart and passion for American troops, especially those in harm’s way – and he clearly understands on a gut level what the troops went through in the deserts of Iraq:
Governor Perry’s love for the troops and understanding of who and what they are also shines in a video intended for Veteran’s Day, featured in another post on Redstate. Of all the men and women who have been on that stage this election cycle, none have my confidence and trust like Governor Perry. Although the last troops(almost) just left Iraq, and the future in Afghanistan is uncertain, the War on Terror won’t go away because we wish it so. The troops I trained and led and the ones they train and lead will serve in some god-forsaken ugly place with certifiably evil people trying to kill them, it is a given. I pray that we can be wise enough give them a Commander in Chief that will respect their sacrifice and their devotion to this country, one that will allow them to complete their missions with the resources, RoEs and common sense they require. Rick Perry is that person.

Thank you for another great diary Hooah
Scope (Diary) Monday, December 19th at 4:20PM EST (link)Every time I hear mentioned the current ROE’s my blood boils. Winning the hearts and minds of those that hate us is a fools errand. Sending our troops into battle with equipment and weapons held together by band aids is ludicrous. I weep for the losses that have been unnecessary, and I pray for those that didn’t come home 100%. Governor Perry would never ever allow this to happen to our most precious assets, every man and women serving in, and that have served in the United States military.
Hope you are well Hooah, and can get to Iowa as I know you would like. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Merry Christmas to you, Scope and all the other ..

Scope (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 3:20PM EST (link)Hope that you and all those you love enjoy celebrating the “reason for the season.”
My very greatest gift this year is a little 10 year old female beagle that we rescued from the pound a few days ago. She is severely malnourished, and was apparently hit in the hind end with a car and it was never treated. She walks funny with her right leg almost facing all the way out to the right, but walk she does, and even trots sometimes. We are feeding her several times a day and she is an absolute chow hound. When you open the door of the refrigerator, she tries to crawl in there. She sleeps with her head on my husbands pillow and snores very loudly in his ear. LOL She is happy as can be, and is a little kissy love bug. When we brought her home and put her down on the floor, she walked right over to the dog water bowls and had a big drink, just as though she has lived here forever. I may have her for 6 months, or 6 years, but I know she will have a good life for the rest of her days. Before we left the pound, I had already named her Holly because she is my little Christmas dog.
I cannot believe we are almost at Perry time in Iowa. It has been heartening to see some now coming around to Perry who were on the fence, or for someone else not long ago, at least on some other blogs I read. There seems to be a coalescing happening. Yipeeee!
Scope I noticed that too.
romansdaughter Friday, December 23rd at 3:29PM EST (link)I have been going around to other blogs too and have been noticing a lot more people talking positively about Perry. Sounds like you got a very lovely Christmas gift. I love dogs too and actually have one out here at the Mission school which is awesome. Her name is Sadie and she is half Belgian Shepherd and half mutt but quite intelligent. She looks more like a Belgian Shepherd. Once again wish you a very Merry Christmas. If you write to Pttx333 wish her a Merry Christmas from one of her Perryite friends.

chbroussard (Diary) Monday, December 19th at 10:33PM EST (link)you and the men and women who now serve or have served our country are the paramount reason why Mr. Obama needs to be removed from the White House. IMHO Commander in Chief is the most important job of the President of the United States, and I agree with you that Rick Perry is the right man for the job. He has served my state well, and I have no doubt that would carry over into the entire nation.
May the blessings of this Christmas season be with you and all that have selflessly served our country. We will forever be in your debt.

Will Perry make it on the VA primary ballot?
expanding_man Friday, December 23rd at 4:55PM EST (link)Came across an article in the Washington Times today. Still can’t figure out how to link articles. My apologies. Is it possible he won’t be on the ballot? I’m considering him seriously.
Of Course Perry Will Be On The Va Ballot
bzip Friday, December 23rd at 5:07PM EST (link)Of course Perry will be on the ballot. In order for Perry not to be on the ballot they would have to rule out about 20% of the 11,911 signatures Perry received (they require 10,000 to be on the ballot):
You need 10,000 signatures to make the ballot but 15,000 are recommended since a bunch are bound to be thrown out as false or duplicative as the petitions are scrutinized. You also need at least 600 signatures from each of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts. Romney submitted 16,026 and Ron Paul submitted 14,361. Perry’s total: 11,911. Gingrich’s: 11,050.

romansdaughter Friday, December 23rd at 6:48PM EST (link)I misunderstood your postings. No other media reporting Va ballot and Perry?
bzip Friday, December 23rd at 6:56PM EST (link)Well so far I might be wrong but I don’t believe it. There is only one news source reporting that Perry has been knock off the Va ballot and maybe Newt along with Larry Sabato tweeting most likely what he read from the story at Washington Post;
Perry disqualified from Va. primary ballot
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/virginia-politics/post/perry-disqualified-from-va-primary-ballot/2011/12/23/gIQA3BZNEP_blog.html
I see no other references, no other media reporting this story. If Perry is knock off rest assured Newt would be too as he had even less signatures. Personally I think it is hogwash but if true then Va has a selection of: Romney and Paul.
I want to see far more media outlets “independently confirming” this before I worry.

bzip- On one of the so-called VA conservative sites
Scope (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 7:49PM EST (link)from an obvious Romney supporter said that VA is very tough on ballot signatures because “they” and yes this guy is “they” don’t want any outliers or fringe candidates to be able to gain the vote in VA. So Ron Paul is on the ballot and he is not an outlier or fringe candidate? The GOP uppers in VA know that Paul will never beat Romney in the state. The fix is in. Perry really needs to do some real checking.
Now, go back and look at some of my posts where I have been very critical of Gov. McDonnell, especially with his executive order to require that all VA government vehicles be required to convert to green energy alternatives. This idiot actually said, at that signing ceremony, that he wants to see vehicles driving down the road with solar energy sources. There’s more that is so not conservative it’s not funny. How about giving the state government workers all a 3% bonus last Christmas?
I am so angry right now you have no idea. I plan on using my voice in this stae, and I won’t stop screaming until everyone knows, without any doubt that the Republicans in the top positions are frauds. Ha, and I still see some saying that McDonnell would be a great VP. He would agree and said as much. He’s very open to it by his own words.
I was wondering how you were handling this, Miss Scope.
louisianapatriette (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 9:14PM EST (link)I’m so mad I could spit nails. The VA GOP’s motives are so transparent it’s not even funny. They got rid of all the social conservatives (not that Bachmann or Santorum were serious candidates, but they WERE social conservatives) and have left you poor Virginians with Romney and Paul. They know the people are scared to death of Paul so they’ll vote Romney. OH! It makes me so angry!
We can’t let them win this. We must FIGHT, “because it’s all for nothin’ if ye don’t have freedom.” You scream from the rooftops, Scope, and we’ll stand right behind you and scream just as loud. This is war. We won’t get any help from the Republican Establishment in defeating Obama, that’s for sure, so We The People are gonna have to show the world what the Tea Party is made of. I’m not talking about the so-called leaders of the Tea Party, I’m talking about normal ordinary folks.
We got a call from the Republican National Committee this afternoon. They wanted money. They had the NERVE to ask us for money. My mom responded, “Oh no, I’m not giving you any money.” The man on the other end said, “Well, I understand this is a hard time of year to contribute…” My mom said curtly, “Oh no, you don’t understand, I’m just as disappointed in the Republican Party as I’m disgusted with Obama, goodbye.” And she hung up. If they try it again she’s going to tell them that she’d rather give money to Rick Perry than the Republican Party.

pj2012,
texasroots Friday, December 23rd at 7:45PM EST (link)It would not surprise me if they let Newt qualify. It’s obvious that Paul, Bachmann, Santorum, Gingrich all want Perry out. It’s a dirty shame what these greedy people are doing to the process. And the main instigator is none other than Romney.
I believe their is a moral to this story
jimmyg Friday, December 23rd at 7:30PM EST (link)In an announcement on their Twitter feed, the Virginia GOP wrote, “After verification, RPV has determined that Rick Perry did not submit the required 10k signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary.”
It is fine and well to spend days on end on the internet praising the every word and deed of your chosen candidate, but if you are tethered to the computer only doing that, and not doing the hard and thankless precinct work, your candidate is going nowhere.
Any competent campaign organization knows that if you need 10,000 signatures to get on the ballot, you better show up with 20,000. I have maintained all along that Perry’s campaign staff were amateurs, and they have proven this tonight. He had 15 million dollars, what the he** did he do with it?
jimmyg - tell me who had 20,000 signatures
bzip Friday, December 23rd at 7:40PM EST (link)Boy you are full of poop. If you hadn’t noticed NOBODY even Romney had 20,000 signatures (Romney had 16,000, Paul had 14,000, Perry 11,900, Newt 11,000). Mind you Bachmann, Santorum, Huntsman didn’t even turn in any signatures.

jimmyg Friday, December 23rd at 7:53PM EST (link)Perry’s organization put him in a position to not get on the ballot. Ask Acat, in Illinois professional political organizations play the game of knocking their opponents off the ballot by challenging signatures on a petition to place a candidate on the ballot. This game is played by both republicans and democrats.
The Perry supporters on this site have an excuse at the ready for any fault or misstep Gov. Perry makes. In this case their is no excuse for coming up short on signatures. A professional organization would have had many more signatures than needed knowing that some, or most of those signatures would be challenged.
The problem for Romney in VA ballot...
onemovoter (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 8:58PM EST (link)is that if Newt is also dropped off the ballot and only Romney and Paul are on the ballot, a really big rumor will start going around that the fix is in for Romney through the VA GOP. Reason being is that Newt is leading by a large margin over Romney in VA.
Not only will people in VA be really ticked, but in many other states as well. Romney needs to keep Newt on the ballot, but doubt that if Perry was knocked off, (although it was the VA GOP that did the notification, not the commission) then it’s likely that Newt will be also.
The national GOP might be so embarrassed by this VA deal that they might push to have all candidates put on the ballot.

As of today, Romney has a much bigger problem than that, onemovoter
lineholder (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 9:20PM EST (link)Sebelius just passed the decision to define what is considered “acceptable health insurance” onto the states.
This article explains the gist of it.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2011/12/23/sebelius_masterful_muddle_112506.html
There is no mechanism in PPACA for the feds to fund the public health insurance exchange. Some states have chosen to take on a proactive role in implementing their own health exchange, but there are many other states that have been holding back, unwilling to take on the expense of the exchange if they don’t have to.
So how do the feds get around this little obstacle? “Uhhmmm…I know, let’s give responsibility for defining what is and is not acceptable health insurance to the states. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Then those evil Repubs can’t say we’re trying to use a “one-size-fits-all” mandate.” (This has been one of Romney’s favorite lines and one of his only points of defense for indicating the differences between the socialistic nationalized health care monstrosity he put into place in Massachusetts and the socialistic nationalized health care monstrosity the feds are ramming down our throats!)
Now, Obama gets to say “No, we honored states rights, too”. And by approaching this way, Sebelius might get state legislatures to take the “bait” and move forward on their own, furthering the great and wonderful socialistic health care plan.
And Romney is left buckled at the knees!!
You got the short end of the stick didn't you
center77 (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 9:41PM EST (link)Perry had more than Newt, and it was not the amount of sigs, it was the fear by march Perry would be in a one on one with Romney. bzip- It was just reported on Fox
Scope (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 7:28PM EST (link)that Perry didn’t make the VA ballot. There is something very very wrong with this. The VA Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling is Romney’s VA chair. He is also running for the Gov. position to replace McDonnell. McDonnell is not endorsing because he says he is friends with a few candidates, I know Perry is one of them, but, he has campaigned with and for Romney. Ken Cucinelli is challenging Bill Bolling for the Governors race. As soon as Cucinelli announced his run, McDonnell immediately came out and endorsed Bolling.
Do you remember after the Huckabee debate, VA Atty Gen. Cuccinelli said in an interview the next day on Fox that as soon as the debate was over, he got many messages by the “uppers” in VA that he had been too hard on Romney?
I go back to the 08 race with Fred Thompson. Fred lives in VA and said that the VA GOP is like the club of the good old boys network. Cantor is their hero which is why every candidate that has started out challenging him, winds up dropping out within a few weeks of announcing. The decades long head of the GOP is a moderate at best, and a kingmaker in VA. VA pushed hard for McCain in 08.
I can promise you that if the only two candidates on the VA ballot is Ron Paul and Mitt Romney, then VA will have relegated themselves to the same irrelevant status that Iowa is headed for. They are already trying to do the same smash against a very popular Ken Cucinelli in favor of the next in line Bill Bolling. The Romney fix is in here.
I will do everything I can to scream my brains out in VA, and that’s a promise.
If you are for Perry in Virginia
izoneguy (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 7:35PM EST (link)then vote for Ron Paul IF Perry really does get rejected.
AKA – Operation Chaos….
Let’s take it to the convention.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
izoneguy, yes, taking it to the convention
texasroots Friday, December 23rd at 8:24PM EST (link)is an excellent idea. How will that play out?? I heard Perry this week say that, even if he did not win in Iowa, he was still going on (music to my ears).

Team Perry Responds to Va Ballot in Politico
bzip Friday, December 23rd at 8:08PM EST (link)From Politico
http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/
From Team Perry:
“Despite aggressive efforts collecting thousands of Virginia signatures after Governor Perry’s mid-August entry into the race, we were notified this evening of apparently falling short of the 10,000 voter signatures needed to qualify. We will closely review the facts and law to determine whether an appeal or challenge is warranted.
This is an isolated situation and does not impact Governor Perry qualifying for the ballot in every other state.
Gov Perry has the utmost respect for the strong place Virginia holds in our nation’s economic and military strength and in American history He will continue to work hard to build strong support in Virginia and earn the trust of conservative-minded voters there.”

From Politico: Gingrich still may not make Va. ballot
bzip Friday, December 23rd at 9:33PM EST (link)Some more reading form Politico on the Va Ballot issue;
Gingrich still may not make Va. ballot
http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2011/12/gingrich-still-may-not-make-va-ballot-108580.html
It appears that Romney collected many of his signatures “at polling places during this year’s primary and general elections in Virginia whereas Gingrich picked up many of his outside retail stores in the last few days. Needless to say, registered voters are more easily found at the polls than outside a Wal-Mart.
ALSO:
“But as Virginia campaign lawyer Chris Ashby notes, those candidates “who submit 14,999 or fewer, however, will undergo signature-by-signature scrutiny of his or her petitions — something no statewide candidate in recent memory ever has had to endure.”

That's an interesting point texasroots
Scope (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 9:16PM EST (link)The filing deadline was yesterday a 5PM. Less than 24 hours later, they have already looked into the more than 11,000 signatures for the Perry ballot qualification. There have been some very very close contested races here and it has taken them weeks to verify the votes. Keep in mind that our Gov. McDonnell appointed the Secy. of VA State Board of Elections. He was the prior election board head for Fla. and was actively involved in “civil rights issues.”
McDonnell said he won’t endorse because he was friends with a few candidates. Then you have the second in command in VA, Lt Gov Bill Bolling as the Romney VA Campaign Chair. McDonnell keeps his nose clean, even after campaigning with Romney, and he puts the attack dog Bolling in charge of supporting Romney. I can promise you that the VA Romney fix is in.
I’ve read that VA has the hardest ballot access rules. They say that they want to insure that fringe or outlier candidates don’t get the support of VA. Perry is tossed, yet the real fringe kook idiot is going to be on the ballot. Does that make any sense to anyone?
The VA GOP, the higher ups, as Cucinelli called them, have all been bought out by the Romney. I don’t know what will happen, or even how to go about this fight in my state. I guess I now see why VA is considered a purple state. The VA GOP insures that we never get anywhere near a conservative. Please, those of you who think McDonnell would be a great VP, don’t go there. I promise McDonnell has opinions that conservatives should hate. What conservative conservative would support green energy initiatives. I promise McDonnell has actively supported non-competitive positions in the state. It’s his ongoing fight with Perry to attract businesses. We have one, read that one, healthcare company insuring more than 90% of the insured in VA. There is no competition in the state. I promise McDonnell is Romney II.
If everyone on RedState will commit here and now, "I will NEVER vote for Romney"

louisianapatriette (Diary) Friday, December 23rd at 9:41PM EST (link)DO NOT GIVE UP.
Think about it. Let’s say Perry wins Iowa. Or comes in second behind Ron Paul; in that case they’ll be counting it as a Perry win. Then let’s say Perry wins South Carolina and maybe Florida. Virginia will look like the biggest laughingstock.
It’s not over till it’s over. I’m still so mad I could spit nails, but I know that this doesn’t spell the end for the Perry campaign. Hardly. It sounds like they’re prepared to challenge this–they won’t take it lying down, you think Perry would take ANYTHING lying down???–and he’s got some real momentum going in Iowa.
We’re going to fight this flagrant example of Establishment corruption. We’re going to reveal them for the crooks, cowards, and criminals that they are, because we know that Governor Perry is a candidate worth fighting for, and we will NOT let the “elite,” whether Democrat or Republican, call the shots.

Unless of course YOU don’t believe a newspaper from the state from which the incident occured to be reliable. I’m just passing on info. I neither love nor hate your candidate. So, what does that make me ??? Honest!!!! I will (or maybe might) check your preferred candidate if its between him and Ron Paul or him and say Donald Trump. I say might. MIGHT because your attitude is what’s preventing me from delving further into what I deem important about a candidate. YOUR attitude is enough to make one want to back off.
I give you intelligent, factual information. YOU decide what to do with the info, just don’t blame me. I did not miscount the number of sigs he had. I did not make up the Virginia rules of 400 per district and I did not do it to hurt you or any Perry supporter. I just read where there were questions regarding some posters opining how this may have come about, and I found what may have been an answer.
My candidate has backed off. Now, I can put my money, my loyalty, my energy, my yard sign, my computer phone hook up, my door knockin’ wherever the hell I want to put it.
