In New York 23, some unexpected backers: Part 3 Fred Thompson

Cross-posted at Freedom Defended .

Some might wonder why I use the term unexpected to refer to Fred Thompson’s support of Doug Hoffman for Congress.  In hindsight, it seems perfectly natural.

Let’s look a little closer though.  NY-23 was originally a small time special election.  The result would not have affected the balance of power in the House regardless of who won.  It is unexpected that anyone at the national level would really get involved.

Fred Thompson found out about the specifics of the race from his wife Jeri.  When he discovered just how liberal Dede Scozzafava was, and what a contrast Doug Hoffman was to the politics-as-usual crowd, he got involved.  First he talked about it on his radio show.  Later he made a formal endorsement, traveled to the district and made TV appearances on Doug’s behalf on Sean Hannity’s show and elsewhere.

Who is Fred Thompson?  Most politically minded people know that he was once a Senator from Tennessee. Most of them also know he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President last year.  His primary campaign theme was "Common-Sense Conservatism", a theme that found its way into Doug Hoffman’s stump speech.  A theme that interestingly enough was the focus of the RNC’s Trevor Francis on a bloggers call after the polls had closed but before we knew the outcome in NY-23.

Fred Thompson is a conservative.  His views and his persona are exactly what conservatism should look like.  He is driven by a simple set of principles which he uses to make his decisions.  Limited government, fiscal restraint, strong national defense and traditional values are part of the common-sense conservatism which Senator Thompson ran for president on and espouses today.  Through his radio show and FredPAC, he is daily influencing the debate in Washington, helping conservative candidates with funds and support, and being a voice for conservatism with the American people.

If Fred Thompson had never taken up Doug Hoffman’s cause, we would likely never have heard of Doug.  The conservatives in NY-23 would still not have voted for Dede Scozzafava, and Bill Owens would still have won the election. However, the NRCC would still think that meddling in local party politics is acceptable.  The NRCC, NRSC and RNC would not have learned a lesson about how powerful the conservative movement is following the summer of the TEA parties.  We don’t have to worry about that, because Fred Thompson was there.  He took up the cause and rallied hundreds of thousands of conservatives around the country to get involved through donations, volunteering and prayers.

If you are interested in conservatism, and in this country returning to the values and policies that made it great, I recommend that you give money to FredPAC, listen to Fred Thompson’s radio show, and pay close attention to what this conservative giant says and does.  It is unlikely that Fred will run for President again, and that is unfortunate, but it doesn’t stop him from being one of the most influential people on the political landscape today.

If I hit the button now it will be an un-recommend…darn button!

Love FRED and hope up great hope that Jeri runs for Congresswoman or Senator from her state!

Fred Thompson-

If only more would have listened to him in 2008!

I still have Fred2008 sticker on my cars

And more in the drawer in case those start to fade in the Florida heat and sun. There would be no 10% unemployment if Fred were in the White House.

How about Thompson/Bachmann in 2012? And Jeri would be a great press secretary. With here in there, Chris Matthews would feel more than a tingle on his leg in the press room.

Fred 2012 would make me happy ... but

I still like Fred a lot and provided he actually tried to WIN this time instead of lollygagging around that would make me very happy.

BUT

I don’t somehow think that a slow talking southerner is a good match up against Obama.

And frankly, I don’t love any of the candidates right now. I’d go into more details but don’t want to threadjack this thread.

and he did get in a little too late, actually after the media made sure he peaked. Like Fred said, they build you way up, just so they have farther to take you down. And, in the SC race, once he got there he actually had more events in less time than any other Republican running. After Obama’s shouting and spouting of lies, a slow deliberate talking Statesmen would be welcome to many. Fred ran once presidential race too early. He epitomizes what us conservatives are drooling for now.

If Fred runs again,

Flagstaff (Diary) Friday, November 6th at 5:32PM EST (link)

he will need to campaign more aggressively.

I still like him better than anybody else on the scene, including Sarah Palin, but if he couldn’t get selected by Republicans last time, why should we think he could win it all next time?

Let’s wait a couple of years, and then take this up again. Maybe by then Fred will have shaved off that attempt to make himself look “cool.”

“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”– Malcolm X, Audubon Ballroom, December 13, 1964

I liked the beard.

Others have also told me they like the beard

GregInFla (Diary) Friday, November 6th at 6:38PM EST (link)

on Fred. I have a theory on the beard and Jeri. He looks younger with a darker beard, and will get more appeal to voters in 2011 (gotta start early) if he transforms his appearance a bit. Then he can take on Beavis and Biden.

You make good points.

Fred has definitely lost some weight. And, by growing it now, we have some years to get used to it. By some logic, that could mean he’s going to run again. The reason I don’t like the beard is part that everybody in this town grows one thinking it makes him look like a mountain man (or he already is one), and part that it reminds me of somebody I don’t like, but I don’t remember who that is.

The biggest problem any Republican will have is Obama’s appearance, as indicated by Tuesday’s election results.

Even SarahP will campaign for FredT, I really suspect. nt

If she's smart, she will do something like that.

If McCain had tapped Fred instead of Sarah, the election outcome might not have been different, but Palin wouldn’t have been damaged by McCain’s timing error, and Fred would still be in the same position that he’s in today.

Michelle Bachmann is in a much better position to grow into a viable national candidate than Palin is right now. I personally think Sarah Palin can be much more valuable as an observer and critic and coach than she can be as a candidate. Just like Newt.

I supported Fred! but

cwilson (Diary) Saturday, November 7th at 3:08AM EST (link)

let’s face it. he lost to John Freaking McCain. NOBODY who lost to that RINO schlub should ever be considered for any position that requires election. If you can’t beat John Freaking McCain, you have no business going up against an incumbent Obama.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom — go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen! –Samuel Adams

That's too simplistic

Hooah_Mac (Diary) Saturday, November 7th at 3:16AM EST (link)

In a field with 4 people who could reasonably be called a conservative of some type and 1 clear moderate + open primaries = conservative vote split everywhere and moderate wins.

There isn’t any comparison between a 5 or more way primary and a 2 way general election. Not that I am saying Fred!! is our guy for next time, just that the analysis is more complicated.

for all you did with the Hoffman conservative efforts in NY. Thank you for your service in the military sir. Did you meet and talk with Fred when you were in NY? If you answer yes, then I have another thought.

Yes I did

Hooah_Mac (Diary) Friday, November 6th at 1:46PM EST (link)

I got a picture with both Fred and Jeri, and had decent conversations with each of the backers I’ve featured so far.

Then, when you finish your deployment, and become a civilian again, I hope that you elicit Fred and Jeri’s services when you run your campaign! You are a winner, and we need more like you.

Fred has to learn to know when to stop talking sometimes. At the end, Neil is waiting patiently to step in to end the segment. I just love Fred! If Fred were on O’Reilly, Fred would always have the last word!

Fred and Jeri were so right on this;

LDahl752 (Diary) Friday, November 6th at 11:47PM EST (link)

and, it didn’t take long at all for some others to jump on Hoffman’s bandwagon, too. That is an indication of a LEADER. Maybe next time the NRCC will call Jeri first and ask her to help them with some “vetting.” The could learn so much by consulting with folks who actually have the pulse of the people, rather than listening to D.C. elites.
Thanks so much for this post, Hooah — I always love reading about FRED!
