Why Ken Paxton Should be Texas Speaker, and Why it Matters

The race for Texas Speaker is now in full sprint. The finish line will be the first week of January – and it’s time for all good Texans to take action to make sure we have a conservative Speaker of the House.

Erick and Drew Ryun have written several posts detailing this fight. Joe Strauss is the incumbent Speaker, having risen to that post two years ago by garnering the overwhelming support of Democrats (65) as well as 11 weak-kneed Republicans. The result? Almost half of committee chairmanships to liberal Democrats and still others to those weak Republicans, causing a much larger percentage of Republican bills to be killed than Democrat bills, and abandonment of important measures like Voter ID.

But while it is obvious that Joe Straus should not be the Texas Speaker – it’s TEXAS, after all – why should it be Ken Paxton, and why should you care?

Ken should be Speaker because he’s a good man, he’s well liked and he’s a limited government conservative with a proven track record. You should care (whether you live in Texas or not) because if we are truly going to reduce the size and scope of the federal government, we must have competent, conservative leadership at the state and local level to promote federalism from the bottom up.

As a matter of full disclosure, I have the luxury of knowing Ken personally – as he is my Representative here in McKinney (just north of Dallas for you non-Texans). When my wife and I manage to corral our 16 month old son long enough, we attend the church that Ken attends (which also happens to be the church Congressman Sam Johnson attends). Ken and his wife are not only active in the church, they were significant in planting it in the first place. He is a great dad and husband – and his family reflects that.

In my previous job as a prosecutor, and in my current work, I have come to know a number of folks in the area, as you would expect. I never hear a bad thing about Ken – and, quite the contrary, I hear only that he works hard, represents McKinney well, and that he can be trusted to do the right thing. After all, after going to Baylor for undergrad, he showed good sense by attending Mr. Jefferson’s University (UVa) for law school – where he soaked in a bit of that Jefferson appreciation for limited government.

And the good news is that he can actually be trusted to be a limited government conservative. His record is rock solid, as Erick noted last month:

Ken Paxton… received a 100% rating from Empower Texans… received a 0% rating from NARAL, a 97% rating from the Young Conservatives of Texas and an A+ from the NRA… [And he] sponsored legislation that would create stronger spending limits in Texas government in 2005, 2007 and 2009 and was lead author on cutting-edge transparency legislation in 2007.

But I can add some personal knowledge to it. Through countless conversations, I can tell you that Ken believes in a limited, Constitutional government (in Washington and Austin). He recognizes how important it is for Texas to lead by example – to balance our budget, keep taxes low and maintain a climate of freedom that attracts business and allows the people of our state to prosper. And he recognizes how critical it is that we get it right at home as we work to devolve power from Washington to the states and local governments.

Ken Paxton should be the next Texas Speaker of the House of Representatives. He is the right man for the job at the right time. We need Texas (and all state and local governments) to be stronger, not weaker.

If you live in Texas and have not called your Texas Representative – do so immediately, and often (and get your friends to do so). If he or she has not publicly supported Ken, ask them why and make sure they know you will do everything in your power to see that he or she gets a primary challenge in 2012 if they support Straus over Ken.

We Need to Get the Word Out

I called my new Rep in Arlington yesterday, Barbara Nash, and Joe Straus is working her hard (see my last two posts). All she has heard about Ken Paxton is garbage (from Joe Straus and friends of course). We need to keep calling and persuading. Be polite but insistent. Know the facts. Ask our new reps to do independent research. We elected some good new folks but they are being co-opted by Joe Straus and his machine. Keep calling — we can win this!

Uphill battle here

I have Jerry Madden from Plano and south Collin County. Not really a RINO but straying towards that territory and perhaps getting a bit complacent from going without meaningful electoral opposition for some time now. That and the fact that he seems to be a bit closer to Straus than I’d like is going to make him a tough nut to crack, but you never know until you try.

I fully sympathize, Mr. President. I miss you being anonymous too.

Madden is my rep too, so I guess we must live close to each other. After the election, I was at a Republican Women’s club meeting. I saw Madden defending Strauss and pooh-poo-ing a couple of women who were trying to persuade him that Strauss wasn’t conservative enough.

I’ve met Ken Paxton and his lovely family. I hope that he gets to be speaker. My women’s club is pushing for him, as his wife is one of our members.

I had already emailed and faxed my rep John Smithee and he was sitting on a fence at the time. I “requested” he put in writing who he would be supporting and I received a letter back from him which said basically he had not made up his mind one way or another and would be reviewing info, etc. Kinda disappointing as Amarillo is one of the most conversative cities in Texas. But I’ll contact him again.

Schedule an appointment and physically visit his office- with like-minded friends if you can. It DOES have an impact that electronics does not.

We fight the Uphill Battle

I would also add that I’ve found Ken to be a cautious guy, and pleasant to those who don’t fully agree with him. A truly good choice for the job.
I personally worked in elect 4 different State Reps districts this time, all successful efforts. 3 of the 4 have gone to Paxton. The 4th (Stefani Carter) is hiding from her constituents and about 90% of the volunteers who worked for her. She will make a BIG mistake if she goes with Straus (We’ve repeatedly told her that he’ll have to leave conservative legislation to die in committee to pay off his Democratic supporters).
Stefani, Angie Chen Button and Jerry Madden are all tough nuts to crack but I will tell; my inside sources say the pressure is working, if we can keep it up, right up to January 11th. On that day, the MORNING of the vote (they’re trying to push the rally to afternoon- after the vote), I hope we can rally enough dedicated conservatives to surround the Capital with a line of marchers. And those that DON’T understand the need for a conservative Speaker, need to be reminded why in the next primary- by their opponents.

We will be on the steps of the Texas Capitol on Jan 11

along with Houston’s KingStreet Patriots to welcome our legislators to their session!! As I reported here our Tea Party had a 90 minute meeting with Lois Kolkhorst. She is very popular around here; runs unopposed. So threatening to primary her is kind of a joke. She is very confident.

She is pledged to Straus, is a committee chairman and no matter how we tied to impress on her that Straus is not a conservative she spun us like a Democrat. She says he is the best FISCAL choice.

At least she will have to look us in the eye when she climbs those steps Jan 11.

Run against Lois- she's gone to the dark side nt

And yes, the dark side. Or a good ole boy in a skirt.

We made contact with her highness and now she says there are legal issues as to why we cannot have a caucus. Anybody know what she is talking about?

I just don’t see why we should take his promises that THIS time he will be different. Why this time?

Vote may be over by 1pm

The problem is, Graciegirl; THE SESSION STARTS at NOON and all the Reps will be already inside and that first vote may be done. Some of us are doing some stuff earlier that I don’t want to post. Contact me at http://northtexasteaparty.org for information. The 1pm rally will NOT have the impact we need.

There absolutely needs to be a Republican caucus on this. We cannot go into the Legislature as a divided body on this matter. The Republican Texas House caucus needs to decide who the right Republican Speaker should be.

Straus has more than enough votes, and the opposition of constituents does not and will not matter to enough of them to make any difference.

Expect the outcome to be no different from 2007 under Craddick or 2009 under Straus. Nothing of significance is going to pass. With sessions that are unrealistically short and infrequent, it’s a wonder anything ever has before.

pass voter id. And that wil be enough for me. Will need a t least 1 special session.

I wish the feds would hold it to 4-6 months every other year. That would put a lot of attorneys and K-streeters out of biz . . . oh wait they’re pretty much the same thing.

Voter ID is a lost cause. As for spending, I don’t know enough to comment other than the fact that they certainly aren’t spending on state employees. Somehow though, Planned Parenthood manages to get state money when it is already flush with cash, so I know something is wrong.

There are a whole lot of things that need doing though. That’s not enough for me.

Federal government is another story. I too wish they had the Texas legislative calendar. I don’t think the state should be held to similar standards.

I am all the way up in Paxton’s district. The last time I went to south Texas was on a vacation almost 20 years ago. I never even go south of the SMU area in Dallas, and even travel that far is rare for me!

It doesn’t matter though as I don’t generally form conclusions or predictions based on views of people I know and am around.

No, Straus SAYS he has enough votes, but

davesinsanantonio (Diary) Monday, December 20th at 6:51AM EST (link)

then, what is his track record with the truth? I am not even sure they are acquainted with each other.

Besides, the only votes that count are the ones cast on January 11th. Until then they are ALL up for grabs. That is why we have to keep pressure on ALL the reps. Heck, we may even get a Dem or two to vote against him. It would serve him right.

My Rep is a lost cause

LittleL1954 Friday, December 17th at 7:31PM EST (link)

since he is one of the Dems who Joe gave a committee chair to last session. Mark Strama actually Used this Appointment as a Campaign Issue since, as he claimed, it showed how he worked across party lines and was not partisan–HA!.
Also, do not forget all the money Joe gave Democratic House Candidates, who in some cases had a Republican opponent in the race. Additionally, Joe gave ZERO money to any House Republican candidate in Travis county, the seat of State Govt.
Thank You Joe for the help you gave to the party–the Democratic Party that is!

What is conservative about this?

indi Saturday, December 18th at 11:36AM EST (link)

What is conservative about trying to oust a Speaker who just helped the GOP gain a huge majority, who can raise tons of money for the party, cares more about governing than political posturing, worked in the Reagan Administration, has shown admirable leadership qualities, who has been a Republican all his life, who is a family man, did not seek this position of leadership but who accepts the responsibilty of the office with fortitude and dignity, and who has said he will support a conservative agenda given the larger majority in the House? …. Nothing. This is not conservative, it is radical. Give the man a chance to lead the GOP House and judge him on the results. I think you will be surprised at how things turn out. Come on folks, let’s get behind our leaders and move forward with solving the problems that are facing Texas. Stop these political games that will only lead to strife within the party. As Paul Burka, Texas Monthly political guru, this race has been over for a long time. Time to unite and move forward. For those Reps who vote against the Speaker, I think it is going to be a hard session and they might be the ones who end up with a primary opponent … and a well funded one at that.

Radical is not the opposite of Conservative.

Martin Knight (Diary) Saturday, December 18th at 8:09PM EST (link)

And supporting conservative legislation is not “political posturing.” And considering that he donated to Democrats with GOP opponents how can you say he helped the GOP gain a majority?

Straus gave money/support to GOP candidates...

indi Sunday, December 19th at 6:40PM EST (link)

And that is why he has 120 votes for Speaker. Who said anything about radical being the opposite of conservative? Conservative legislation will pass in Texas with 101 GOP majority no matter who is the Speaker.

Texas Republican Assembly Board of Directors Endorses Ken Paxton for Texas Speaker of the House

mgallops Wednesday, December 29th at 5:27PM EST (link)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Contact: Michael Gallops, mgallops@texasra.org

DALLAS – Today, the Texas Republican Assembly Board of Directors announced their endorsement of State Representative Ken Paxton (R-McKinney) for Speaker in the Texas House of Representatives.

The race for speaker in the Texas House is the first fight for conservative principles that lawmakers will face in January. In November, we saw an unprecedented mandate given to the Republican Party, and we believe that the interests of all Texans will be best served with a conservative leader in the House of Representatives. With that in mind, the TXRA Board of Directors opted to endorse in this race.

Representative Paxton is the very definition of a conservative Republican. He has ranked among the most consistent conservatives in the Texas House throughout his tenure as state representative, and our board of directors is confident in his ability to lead the Texas House beginning in January.

The Republican Assembly board is demanding that Republicans caucus and select the speaker without input from the Democrats. We are endorsing Ken Paxton and are recommending that legislators support and vote for him.

The board of directors chose to endorse in the speaker’s race without the membership of the Republican Assembly due to the time constraints in this race.

The Texas Republican Assembly is comprised of chapters around the state of Texas. The organization regularly endorses in Republican primary contests, and this year endorsed conservatives such as incoming state representatives David Simpson, Erwin Cain, Charles Perry, and others.

The Texas Republican Assembly is a grassroots movement to take back the Republican Party for the vast and disenfranchised majority of its members: Reagan conservatives, who believe in small government, lower taxes, free market capitalism, a strong defense, the right to life, and a decent and moral America.
