Oh, and he’s voting for Elena Kagan for Supreme Court (can you believe it? No way…)
Apparently, in defending Graham’s earth-shattering announcement that he will support her, his team fancies Graham a “thinking person’s conservative,” “not a demagogue,” and one who will “do well among voters with IQ’s in triple digits.”
There you have it South Carolina, if you disagree with Senator Demagogue, he thinks you are stupid.

Graham's Vote on Kagan
radman Wednesday, July 21st at 11:16AM EST (link)Although it will probably be deleted, the following message was sent to Sen. Graham’s site today. (Thanks for the link CPhantom.)
Since she was first nominated as the next Justice of the SCOTUS, I have carefully followed the postings of Elena Kagan’s past opinions on a number of subjects that lie at the heart of conservative thought and mainstream American values. Therefore, I would sincerely question, based on her statements of support of partial birth and taxpayer-financed abortions, her opposition to the INDIVIDUAL right to keep and bear arms, her support for judicial activism that usurps Congress’s (YOUR) power to legislate, her obvious disdain for our honored military, her absence of judicial experience, her minimal legal experience, her demonstrated legal positions that have been soundly rebutted by SCOTUS rulings, AND her refusal to affirm the creator-endowed rights in the Constitution, HOW can you not realize that she is clearly NOT qualified for a lifetime of negative impact on our nation and our individual rights.
There should be not one scintilla of doubt in your mind that the citizens of South Carolina and this country are watching, and they will remember your vote when you are up for re-election. “The leopard” will never change her “spots,” so there is nothing that you can do or say to adequately justify a vote to confirm Elena Kagan. Please “man up” Senator Graham and do the right thing by voting against this nominee’s confirmation.

I’m not sure if the drubbing from the media is a real factor for him – if so, that would be more sad. What I’d expect the issue to be is that he lost to an upstart who he knows is a backstabbing liar. (Obama caught some of McCain’s temper back when they were both senators, no?)
I don’t think the question matters for 2011 and 2012. McCain will be in a narrow majority but with a definite dislike for the White House policies, so he may remain aimed in the right direction for a while.
I also don’t think the question is the right one for 2011 thru 2016. The right question is, since J.D. Hayworth can’t get traction, how do we *keep* McCain on the right road? What pressures can be applied?

He just won re-election 2 years ago, even after being found to be lacking in even the smallest Republican principles. He can, and will, continue for the next 4 years to stick it to the Republicans.
Seeing that there is a slight possibility that the R’s can pick up a majority in the Senate, that majority will be very slim indeed. With the likes of Graham, McCain, the Maine Twins and now Brown, that slight majority will not make any difference when you can count on these 5 to love bi-partisianship. We’ve all seen them vote with the D’s on some bad stuff, it will be interesting to see them turn out No votes on Republican legislation, because it just wouldn’t be bi-partisan. Democrats are not bipartisan. NO Republican should ever vote with them on anything outside of the Republican platform or national emergency. We’re stuck with the ‘party of no’ label anyway, why do these clowns keep voting yes???
Graham, Snowe, Collins, Brown all are unable to grasp the fact that they are our only defense against potentially permanent damage to our republic.
Why can the Democrats maintain unity with more members and Republicans can’t?
SC, remember this when Graham is up again in the next primary – he deserves to be Bob Bennett’d more than Bob Bennett did.
I understand Snowe, Collins, and Brown
clintonformccain Tuesday, July 20th at 8:11PM EST (link)They represent Massachusetts and Maine. The have to walk down the middle of the road, Rockefeller Republican style. But, Linsdey Graham represents South frickin’ Carolina. Does he think he’s going to get primaried from the left? I don’t know what he’s smokin.
clintonformccain- Excuse me
Scope (Diary) Tuesday, July 20th at 8:45PM EST (link)Do you really have more of a problem with Graham for being the R jerk in this case over Brown, Snowe and Collins voting for the power grabbing, nothing accomplished, votes for Financial Deform? I hope you are not serious.
More of a problem, no...
gbenton Tuesday, July 20th at 9:27PM EST (link)Your point about the states they represent is well taken, and Graham thereby stands as the greatest offender in that context.
That said, I see no reason why Brown, Snowe and Collins chose to vote for Financial Deform. It is such landmark bills that propose to forever alter major aspects of our relationship with government that they need to stand with the Republicans. Let them be bipartisan on things like the Jobs bill or extending unemployment, things which would give them cover and have short term impact. But not things like Obamacare, Financial Deform, Cap and Tax, Card Check, etc. Such things are too devastating and difficult to undo.
They needed to stand firm on requiring Financial Reform to include Fannie/Freddie and use that to rub Dodd and Frank’s nose in the mess they helped create. I’m sorry, but they sold out and I don’t care what state they are from. What good is it to have them as ‘R’s’ if they vote like ‘D’s when it really matters?
They will be painted as part of the party of NO either way, it’s not like they actually will get cover for any of this bipartisan betrayal when facing a Dem opponent in the next election. our liberty was sold for their expedience.
Hmm... I think I misunderstood your post
gbenton Tuesday, July 20th at 9:34PM EST (link)Sorry… honestly, I don’t know which instance is worse. What is the impact of Graham easing Kagan onto the court? What treachery could she contribute if somehow we lose a conservative justice down the road?
Financial Deform is a power grabbing disgrace, and the Republicans should have filibustered it to death.
I’m just seeing to much caving and not enough backbone since Obamacare passed. We need to demonstrate the same unity as the Democrats if we are to win this battle. RINO time is over. Bipartisanship is a fools game.

From a political standpoint
clintonformccain Tuesday, July 20th at 9:41PM EST (link)I’m just looking at it from a political standpoint. I don’t understand what Graham hopes to accomplish by voting with the Democrats. I don’t think it plays that well in South Carolina.
I’m not married to any of these guys (or gals). I don’t trust any of them (Democrat or Repubican, RINO, DINO, or whatever) as far as I can throw them.
My attitude is “throw the bums out” and then next time “throw the new bums out”. Right now, the only think I care about politically is defeating every Democrat in the House and Senate. The less these scoundrels do to us, the better. We need more gridlock.
Agreed, no idea what Graham hopes to get
gbenton Tuesday, July 20th at 10:06PM EST (link)and I don’t care. Between this, Cap and Trade, and his comments about the Tea Party, he just needs to go.
To your other point, time will tell. I see much hope in the new crop of Republicans and believe the only option we have is to reform the GOP, not toss all the bums out because then you risk good incumbents, like DeMint, getting tossed out willy nilly. The anti-incumbent rage is too blunt an instrument, and I think it is largely a myth concocted by Dem strategists trying to spin the anti-democrat wave coming their way.
The real battle is against big government vs. limited government in both parties, and there are no conservative Democrats, so that means reforming the GOP from the inside.
We don’t have time to start a whole new third party based on conservative platform and hope to stop the Obamatrain before they turn our Constitution into confetti.
That said, if the Republican wave coming in turns out to be a bunch of spineless Scott Browns, I may blow a fuse. I honestly have hope for the GOP and don’t wish to dwell on that idea at all.
The Republican brand needs to stand for something and by voting for Kagan, Graham waters that down and confuses voters.
Screw bipartisanship. This Republic will be saved by crushing statists, not by appeasing them. Bipartisanship is Stockholm syndrome.
By punishing folks like Graham we can eventually teach the opportunistic among the GOP that their best path is to stay true to conservative principles. I honestly think the recent primary victories indicate that more and more of the GOP get it and more and more candidates are in our corner. So there is hope, and I’m married to that battle.
The real battle...
clintonformccain Wednesday, July 21st at 12:47AM EST (link)“The real battle is against big government vs. limited government in both parties, and there are no conservative Democrats, so that means reforming the GOP from the inside.”
——————
I think the real battle is politicians lining their pockets while throwing up a barrage of chaff to keep us from locking in on their games.
I don’t believe that either party speaks to my views (I would just like to see basic good-faith competence), so I vote strategically. The Democrats have told me that I’m a racist and that they don’t need white folk like me in ther coalition. OK. Made it even sweeter to vote for Scott Brown (aka 41) against a college classmate.
I agree with you that there is some promising energy among the new breed Republicans.
This is a war consisting of battles
gbenton Wednesday, July 21st at 1:31AM EST (link)and while I certainly feel Graham, Specter, and others fit your concerns on the GOP side, I find zero value in anyone on the Democrat side and would rather light myself on fire than vote for any Democrat anytime anywhere. After what the bluedogs did with their ‘resistance’ to Obamacare, the most conservative of the Democrats proved themselves to be beyond trusting by a wide margin.
If it takes many election cycles to reform the GOP and repeal and reverse the Progressive rot that has infected our Republic, so be it. The corrupt and spineless among the GOP will eventually be outnumbered if we prevail.
Best advice I’ve gotten from RedState is to get involved at the local level within the GOP and be part of the army that fuels reform. See the Precinct Committee strategy and make your vote heard.

sccrenny (Diary) Tuesday, July 20th at 10:43PM EST (link)(After I watch DeMint on Greta! Go jim! Block funding for the AZ lawsuit!) Anyway, SC is almost monolithically Republican. Whoever the Rep. party nominates will win in a statewide race.
SC is, in a real way, divided politically by geography. If you divide SC with a diagonal line running through Columbia (geographic center of the state) the northwest half is about as conservative as you will find. This is DeMint country.
To the southeast of this line they are center to right center politically. The coastal communities are less “native” with a huge percentage coming from other parts of the country (retirees, country club Reps.)
The state Rep powers have basically “designated” nominees to fit the two demographics, DeMint for the northwest and Graham for the southeast.
The seat being held by “Goober” was held by “Foghorn” T. Hollings for decades. “Goober” was liberal enough to at least wrest the second Senate seat from the Dems.
So we replaced Strom Thurmond with DeMint, and Fritz Hollings with “Goober”. A net gain of a Rep. Senator, but not much of one. As I posted above, don’t blame me I voted for the Dem in 2008. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Conley

Adjoran (Diary) Wednesday, July 21st at 2:27AM EST (link)I don’t agree with your assessment of the “dividing line” at all, though.
Take SC-01, Charleston and coastal environs – conservative Tim Scott is poised to take it, succeeding conservatives Henry Brown, Mark Sanford, Arthur Ravenel, and Tommy Hartnett. The “minority district” SC-06 is gerrymandered along I-95, but Spratt’s district is on the border of your line. The difference in voting is mainly due to the percentage of black voters in the area. Don’t blame the snowbirds – if they are less conservative than the natives, they are balanced by the military retirees.
I defer...
sccrenny (Diary) Wednesday, July 21st at 11:34PM EST (link)to your assessment. If I can refine my comments ( I admit I’m over my head trying to explain SC poltically and have no poli-sci credentials or expertise)Charleston is a conservative center. As you say, snowbirds are largely Republican, but not as far right as the natives. Another demographic which is growing along the coast (particularly the Grand Strand area) are young people attending the local colleges and universities, growing in standing, and thus attendance. In any case, thank you for joining a blind man at the elephant to provide perspective from another part of it.

It wasn’t the House managers that botched the trial…Lott refused to allow the House managers the time necessary to present the entire case. It was rigged from the start by the same types of asses that now control the Republican leadership in the Senate.
Graham simply went from the House, )where he was a hero to many Conservatives after smashing Gore’s carbon tax and Hillary Care into a thousand little pieces), to joining the go along to get along fraternity of boot licking Republicans that represents the Republican Senate Caucus.

Do you think Obama would send a more conservative choice, when he has a stable full of even more radical nominees to send up? No way. Sooner or later, our filibuster would fall apart as we lose public support, and he would get the seat filled.
We must choose our battles carefully. This is not a huge issue in the country – the economy and spending and debt are (and taxes will be after January). We can take enough of the Congress to block Obama’s agenda, at least, and that’s the best outcome.
Get real. A few years ago we were trying to OUTLAW judicial filibusters – this is one of the issues that angered conservatives at Graham, his joining the “Gang of 14″ to save the filibuster.
Show me 40 votes to filibuster Kagan before you blame her confirmation on Graham. They are NOT there.

At what point do we, the states, seriously start thinking about repealing the 17th Amendment?
Teresa in Fort Worth, TX (Diary) Tuesday, July 20th at 5:52PM EST (link)We are projected to have 40 Republican Governors next year. Can’t states petition to start up a Constitutional Amendment?
When FDR died, it is my understanding that it wasn’t hard to convince the states that term limits for a president was a good idea. It’s time to give the states their “voice” back, the way that our Forefathers originally intended.
At the very least, states need to have SOME way to keep their Senators in line – if not a Constitutional amendment, then something in their legislative rules that allow them to recall a Senator when he/she steps over the line.
As it stands now, Senators know that they can pretty much do whatever they want to do for 3-4 years of their term without having to answer to anyone. That is entirely too much power, in my opinion….
Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride…..

The 17th Amendment was the result of “Journalists” turning late 19th Century and early 20th Century Senators into ‘Robber Barons’.
There was corruption to be certain, just as there is now, but at least there was a measure of accountability to their state legislatures and governors.
The 16th and 17th Amendments were the greatest insults to the Constitution and the Founders ever ratified by the state legislatures. Had they had ANY idea of the consequences I do not believe that they would have adopted these two horrible amendments.
“Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. He is desparate to leave a legacy of “fairness”. He is deathly afraid of being perceived as “not nice”. When it comes to SC nominations, he is the Robert Byrd of Republicans. He believes with all that’s in him that a President has the right to their own brand of SC justice no matter who it is. And he is under the delusion that Dems will admire him for his principles and will be inspired to change their ways. And even if they don’t, he has taken the “principled” position.

Superheater (Diary) Wednesday, July 21st at 10:50AM EST (link)I sent an email to this moron telling him not to confuse fecklessness with gentility and that he acted like a fawning schoolboy in his discourse with Kagan. I think I added something about him being derelict in his duty. Yeah, like he cares.
There’s a couple of distinct possibilities with Grahams hard-to-port turn.
The first is he’s got some weird hero worship of McCain, and sees McCain as the path to prominence. (Yes, the man who made Obama possible)
The second is a little more disturbing: Graham is an unmarried man and a politician. Politicians have high “affirmation” needs to begin with, an not having a wife to provide it makes them even more susceptible to the kind of insincere praise heaped on RINO’s by what Angelo Codavilla (spelling?) referred to as “the ruling class”. In short, we have a military officer completely oblivious to having “Stockholm Syndrome”.
The third is the worst possible thing: that somebody has something on him, some potential embarrassment, peccadillo or scandal and its kept quiet as long as he’s a good little RINO. It’s not like a South Carolina Republican has never had a “problem”, eh Sanford? I think somebody owns this guy (and quite a few others-its just easier to see the left rolling over every time a Soros tells them to, with his bag of 527 bones in hand)
Then again, the reason doesn’t matter. Hopefully his record will invite a challenger in 2014. If a primary fight causes him to lose the general election, what’s the difference?

I’m sure many McCain voters thought they were making the “smart” [read: 'smug'] choice in nominating him, that he had the ‘best chance against Hillary’, etc.–which obviously turned out to be far from the case. Graham thinks he’ll get away with the same sentiment–in the South Carolina of Jim DeMint and Nikki Haley. Good luck!

Lindsey's Vote
caboose Wednesday, July 21st at 3:42PM EST (link)for Kagan, is a result of the six year term he enjoys without accountability to anyone for at least five years into his term. At that point he will begin to con the voters into believing that he is a true conservative. Of course that is true of other Senators, whether Democrat or Republican. What you are seeing out of Graham, is the same radical behavior that McCain will return to if he beats JD Hayworth in Arizonia. A constitutional convention or a constitutional admendment is essential to change the elected term for Senators to two years. The same as US Representatives. It needs to be done immediately!
Actually, McCain Is Clearly To The Right of Lil' Lindsay
IJB Wednesday, July 21st at 4:38PM EST (link)McCain voted ‘No’ on Sotomayor, and is going to vote ‘No’ on Kagan.
And I’m saying that as someone who wants McCain gone – but, compared to Graham, even McCain starts looking good…
Again, it depends on which McCain shows up... this month we're getting the desperately-seeking-re-election one... [nt]

Letter to Lindsey Graham
fab4bear Wednesday, July 21st at 8:43PM EST (link)I was astonished that you supported Sotomayor and I am FLABBERGASTED that you voted FOR Kagan.
Her ENTIRE family have been involved with socialists and communists for their entire life. Her Father, Mother, and Brother, as well as she have been members of these organizations.
OBVIOUSLY it doesn’t matter to you WHAT ideology you have, including SOCIALIST/COMMUNIST. I’m not sure what your criteria is for supporting enemies of the Constitution? Is it all in the spirit of “bi-partisanship?”
Let me educate you on this matter, a BAD Bill remains a BAD bill, no matter how much you compromise, and a Socialist/Communist remains an enemy of the U.S., no matter how charming or “intellectual” you think they are.
SHAME ON YOU, SIR!
I will be contributing to your opponent, both time and money to make sure you don’t return to Congress.
YOU ARE NOT A REPUBLICAN, YOU ARE A RINOcrat. I recognize you are not alone, John McCain, Olympia Snow, Mitt Romney & Huckabee are also progressive Republicans that I hope America FIRES from Congress.
Sincerely,
Jim Myers
Any Republican Who Endorses Kagan
pirate55 (Diary) Wednesday, July 21st at 9:21PM EST (link)constitutes an oxymoron. Those Republicans who do so are simply not Republicans. If you say you are in the words of that South Carolinian Representative, “YOU LIE”.
Sen Lugar said he will vote yes on Kagen
tngal (Diary) Wednesday, July 21st at 9:49PM EST (link)Now that its out of the Senate Judiciary Committee it heads to full Senate vote. Dick Lugar is the number 2 GOP to sign on after Graham. I guess the administration or Reid was hoping for an ace-in-the-hole in case a couple of dems saw the light and realized she was a tad underqualified.
The barn door has been opened.
IQ and common sense different
macdnife Wednesday, July 21st at 11:47PM EST (link)Dear Senator,
Taking the “high road” in the Kagan nomination might get you a few liberal votes and more invites to lunch from liberal senators but you are helping to put my children and grand children under a court that will change the Constitution and rob them of freedoms paid for in blood. My great respect for you has has fallen than the stock market. Your democratic colleagues invented the term “Bork” as in torpedo by partsan lynching. Oh, if they were truely gentlemen. They play for keeps, never back down and run roughshod over republicans when in power. Why have hearings, just give the damned president what he wants, he’s going to get it anyway (they rammed the HC bill down our throats and your’e making nice?) Kagan has as much bench experience as I do. You have been had. God help us.
Sincerely,
Donald Gregory
I think likewise of Lindsey Graham. nt

JD joins stupid
beau Thursday, July 22nd at 1:49AM EST (link)If you are stupid, perhaps JD would like to join your team??!! In Arizona, we have the once named, ‘dumbest member of Congress’ trying to run again for Senator! I suppose everyone needs a representative, even if he was the laughing stock in Washington.
