Healthcare on My Wife’s Mind

This was something my wife was going to post on Facebook, but it became too long and I thought it worthy of sharing here:

Health care “reform” is on my mind today. Seems it’s going to pass the Senate and may become law in some form. I’ve always believed that government involvement in our lives is a very bad thing. That is especially true with healthcare. Honestly, I think one need only look at the looming medicare bankruptcy [see, e.g., here] and consider that in context with other interactions with the government to come to the conclusion that allowing the government to involve itself any further into our healthcare is a terrible idea.

That said, my opposition now is far more personal than that. I have a newborn son. He had a cold a few weeks ago, and he has another one now. No big deal; he’ll be fine. But in the last several weeks I’ve talked to the nurse at his pediatrician’s office a dozen times, maybe. I’ve filled 2 prescriptions. I’ve worried about his fever, and I’ve called the nurse again. More, earlier this year, our family had another health concern come up – and we’ve gone through tests, procedures, office visits and lots of interaction with the healthcare system generally – almost every aspect of it, positive.

But, my family spends a lot of money for good health insurance and we have done so for a long time. That’s ok – because I am not sure I could tell you that it’s “too much.” I can tell you it’s unnecessarily complicated – almost always due to government regulation – but it’s something we are more than happy to budget for. More, I am conscious not to use our healthcare coverage like it’s “free.” It’s not free – nurses and doctors and meds all cost money, but they make my life better and they help my son and my family stay healthy. I value that, and I am willing to save my money elsewhere to spend it for health care.

One thing I know for certain – in a system where the government rations, manages and otherwise dictates our health care, it will be nothing to value, and only the wealthy will be able to find quality care outside of the system. That is both tragic and immoral. I would do anything to keep my son and my family healthy, and until this monstrous bill becomes law (and, God help us, even after), I will do anything to preserve my right to do so in a free, innovative, efficient, and yes, often expensive, private market. Our healthcare system may not be perfect, but it’s the best in the world. The idea that, due to government interference, it may not be the success story in 10 years that it is right now – and that I may not be able to get the care I seek for my son and my family – is an outrage and deserving of our full, immediate attention. There are reforms we can and should make – but,the bills under consideration right now are not making those reforms. They are an anti-American, immoral, abomination – passed not in good faith, but so that a handful of corrupt, self-congratulating elitists in Washington can feel good about themselves.

I remain hopeful that we can stop this bill. But, we are running out of time. If we do not stop the bill’s passage, every politician advocating for or complicit in its passage should fear for his job and know he will pay for this.

That’s what’s on my mind today.

My sister had (has) cancer....

larryp Thursday, December 24th at 12:21PM EST (link)

She never regarded Doctors very highly and refused to go. So when she could not walk, the paramedics took her to the ER. There the Heavens opened and bestowed upon her a great dr. He was a kidney specialist and internist. He cared. He argued and, yes fought some with her to get her tosee some of the doctors that would help her. She ordered them out of the room. Anyway she had breast cancer and did not want a biopsy.
So the treatment was to be radiation and chemo. I think they were ablet to get the diagnosis another way.
I did not know whatwasgoing on so I talked to the doctor, asking if I needed to set up hospice. He said, “Oh no, she is doing great. The tumor is shrinking away and if she blows through that drug we have two more that will work for her.” The drug is Femara. We pay for it ourselves- about 300./mo.
But the lesson is that the R & D was done and there are 2 more waiting in the wings that some medical geniuses worked hard to figure out.
My sister got quick help and great doctors, incl an incredibly smart neurologist.
Obama care scuttles that, all of it. Ruins it. These are out sisters, wives,
mothers and girlfriends that are being sacrificed by a bunch of creeps.
Note that they are the nurturers and they get sacrificed first, imo.
In Canada and UK ,to me, the key to the system is to block the diagnosis first. Then there are fewer people to seek treatment.

Federalism and the 10th

DerKrieger (Diary) Thursday, December 24th at 12:28PM EST (link)

Ever since the Civill War the federal government has unconstitutionally usurped more and more of the states rights and privileges with nary a peep from the American public. I suppose that this has been allowed to pass because by and large the public has supported the goals of the federal government whether the goals such as Medicare or Social security were constitutional or not.
In the last several decades Americans have become increasingly polarized and it is paralyzing our federal government because the federal government was never set up to manage what ought to be local and state issues. Reconciling the cultural differences between CA and AR for example is nigh impossible and results in the incomprehensible legislation we have today.
I personally don’t care what the nuts in CA do as long it stays in CA. If they want gay marriage, marriage to cats and dogs, legalized marijuana, go fo it. Just don’t try to impose that on we here in AR.
Similarly, if those in CA, MA, WA, OR, et al desire a public health care option, again I say go for it and I will watch as they suffer the consequences.
Where I draw the line is having a COngress dominated by Leftists impose on all of us the anti-American legislation favored by Blue states.
There is already a movement to revive states rights and the 10th Amendment and several states are planning on passing legislation to nullify any health care plan passed by the Democrats and signed by Obama.

Check out the 10th Amendment Center for current efforts: http://www.tenthamendmentcenter.com/2009/12/21/health-care-nullification-things-have-just-gotten-underway/

Here are the details of Arizona’s effort: http://www.azhealthcarefreedom.com/

A lot of people have asked when I bring up nullification the issue of taxation. In conjunction with any nullification effort must be the concept of an escrow account for federal taxes. We all know that the federal government bribes and blackmails the states with the tax money of the states own residents. An escrow account would allow the state to collect all federal taxes, subtract what they would expect back from the fed and then submit the balance. To me this is the proper relationship between the federal and state governments. If things wsere perfect we’d pay higher state taxes than we do federal taxes so the states could take care of themselves but the federal government’s burdensome tax rates have made it difficult for states to raise taxes to take care of their own needs and are thus dependent upon the wold be princes in Congress.

Here is actual draft legislation for an escrow account: http://www.tenthamendmentcenter.com/wp-content/uploads/legislation/Tax-Escrow-Account.pdf

So, let’s not put all of our eggs in the federal basket and instead work to elect real conservatives to state legislatures and governorships who will support putting the federal government back in its bottle.

In the Kentucky Resolutions of 1798 Thomas Jefferson wrote,

“co-States, recurring to their natural right…will concur in declaring these acts void, and of no force, and will each take measures of its own for providing that neither these acts, nor any others of the General Government not plainly and intentionally authorized by the Constitution, shalt be exercised within their respective territories.”1

Alexander Hamilton echoed this sentiment in Federalist #85 “We may safely rely on the disposition of the state legislatures to erect barriers against the encroachments of the national authority.”

The precedent and authority exist. Let’s exercise them.

“In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.” – Thomas Jefferson

“I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.” – James Madison

Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience.” — John Locke, 1690

Well said....

It seems like this legislation is based primarily on the idea that American are stupid. Too stupid to sign up for a health insurance plan. And too stupid to choose a decent plan even if we sign up for one.

There’s much discussion about whether federal funds will somehow be used to pay for abortion. But I thought the whole idea of getting rid of a “public option” was so there would be no federally funded health insurance plan, period.

If the idea is to make sure everyone has health insurance, just give everyone vouchers, IMHO. It’s simple, involves minimal bureaucarcy, and people can spend the money on whatever health plan they like (excepting abortion, assisted suicide, and the like). I believe that Rahm Emmanuel’s older brother (Ezekial) suggested something along these lines.

This video sums it up for me

Make Mine Freedom. Amazingly, we seem to face the same issues time and time again.

I have a daughter with Down Syndrome. She will need a lot more medical care throughout her life than average. And guess who will be first to be denied healthcare after the government makes it a scarce resource?

It won’t take long for us to say told you so, but we all will suffer in the process.

“But, my family spends a lot of money for good health insurance and we have done so for a long time. That’s ok – because I am not sure I could tell you that it’s “too much.” ”

You are fortunate that your family is insurable. Many cannot obtain insurance coverage, good or merely adequate, at any price.

“One thing I know for certain – in a system where the government rations, manages and otherwise dictates our health care, it will be nothing to value, and only the wealthy will be able to find quality care outside of the system.”

Substitute “insurance carriers” for “government” in that sentence, and many of us would argue that your bleak assessment of the future is our current reality.
