Joe Barton’s Folly – Congress Has Nothing More Important to Do Than to Run College Football?

I honestly don’t know what the hell happens to these people when they get to Washington. That city really is a deadly disease.

Congressman Joe Barton (quasi-R – TX) apparently has so much time on his hands that he is teaming up with like-minded big-government nationalists to try to tell the American people and colleges around the nation how it must determine it’s college football national champion. Indeed, his bill has passed out of the House Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee – and Barton has had “good conversations” with those bastions of limited government, Henry Waxman and Barack Obama, about moving the bill forward.

Well, thank goodness these guys are on the ball, or how would we survive? How could we possibly sort this out without the wisdom of Washington, D.C. – those great men and women who have given us the over $12 Trillion in debt, the TARP program, Katrina-relief and now want to tell you what health care you can have.

The current college football D-I national championship system has serious flaws. And good conservatives can believe it needs a playoff system – just as good conservatives can believe it does not. I don’t care to address the merits of a playoff or different system here, because that’s not the point.

The point is this: ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FRIGGING MIND? SERIOUSLY? We’re at war with crazy terrorists who want to kill us… We’re fighting the biggest assault on liberty in our lifetimes with the likely Washington takeover of our healthcare system… We are bleeding money out of every pores of our collective body… and YOU idiots want to “fix” the college football playoff system?

Even worse – how can someone consider himself conservative and believe that it is the business of our national government in Washington, D.C. to determine how college football national champions are determined? You can blather on all you want about “interstate commerce” and other nonsense, but you can’t actually believe that Washington should take up this issue – ever, much less right now – and believe in a limited national government.

God help us with “conservatives” like this.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

I’ve pined for a Division 1A playoff season for 30 years….and I’d love to see it…but since when does the federal government have the right to pass a law forcing the issue…let alone considering the fact that I need a frigging job and when you’re worried about making your next house payment the last thing you want to see your congressman doing is voting on a playoff system in College Football with the dollar crashing around the world, taxes coming down like a ton of bricks on businesses who might hire me and when the unemployed, ployment rate is 10+%

I'm always torn on these things

Darin_H (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 9:51AM EST (link)

I firmly believe that these types of things are in no way are anything close to something that our government should be involved in.

Then again, if these fools are doing this, then they are spending less time mucking up more important things.

Once upon a not so long ago, I agreed that Congress spending time on nonsense

USNJIMRET (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 10:52AM EST (link)

meant they spent less time of screwing up other, truly important, aspects of day to day life.
However, the sheer size of TARP, Stimulus I and II, Health Care Reform, etc has changed my mind. And not just the amount of money involved.
The several thousand pages of Bill that seemingly teleports from some alternate universe, on a moments notice, means that the Congress Critter isn’t all that involved in the generation of the document in the first place.

These totally un constitutional and time wasting intrusions into sports serve as excellent smoke screens.
While the real destructive ‘work’ goes on in places the American public doesn’t even know exist!
And suddenly, as predictable as the sun rise, some ‘crisis’ comes along, and almost magically a legislative ‘fix’ is on the table for a vote.

BTW, a response to Vladimir…..In addition to your ideas about some suggested rules changes……at least one ‘trick’ play a game. Field goals made from more then 57 yards get awarded four points AND retention of the ball on your own 33 yard line. (Failure to make a field goal from 57 or more yards will result in the opponent gaining possession of the ball at their 33 yard line. This would be a reward for trying something that clearly has a very low expectation of success. The reward is for “trying” something considered ‘hard’, even in the face of unlikely success. The attempt at a 57 plus yard field goal is NOT considered as fulfilling the ‘trick’ play requirement noted earlier)

Good point.

I have always flip flopped on this as well. A busy congress on stupid things may save some real damage. But now I am thinking congress stupid enough to take on college football playoffs and baseball steroid hearings is stupid enough to spend all our money on foolish things such as socialized health care utopia that will bankrupt nearly everyone.

Government interference is government interference

tankertodd (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 10:49AM EST (link)

We absolutely need to communicate to the Beltway GOP types that we are sick of government interference of any kind. This is why the GOP fails to take market share while the TEA Party grows. A growing majority of Americans are sick of government, period.

Another excellent example is Eric Cantor proposing a law that entitles Medal of Honor winners to fly the American flag. (I think MoH winners should be able to take a free flight on Air Force One once a year with their whole family. Someone honorable should be able to fly on that equipment.) A wonderful sentiment. Probably unconstitutional. And do we need yet another law on the books? Government is the problem, not the solution. If we believe that we need to start hammering these guys ESPECIALLY when we agree with the change they want to effect but DISAGREE with the government heavy-handed approach.

I want government GONE. That includes a Republican government. A government powerful to give you everything you want is powerful enough to take everything away.

I don’t know Congressman Barton or anything about his district or those he purports to represent. Personally, I don’t give two bits about the collegiate national football championship or how it’s determined. Based upon the diary and everyone’s comments, it does seem to me that the Congressman has a serious time-management issue, seeing all that is currently happening around him in the hallowed halls he occupies.

Perhaps like minded voters in his district should help him to reexamine his legislative perspective and realign his priorities (my polite way of telling him to quickly pull his head out of where the light don’t shine).

Hello, RedStaters of Texas-6! Is this what Phil Graham would have sponsored, given where we are today? Maybe 24 years in Congress is a bit too much? Is your telephone or keyboard in working order? Then, have at him! He needs input from that R+15 Texas district! Quickly, now!

The System IS broken

humboldt (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 11:33AM EST (link)

Noone wants Congress mucking around in college football and we can all agree that there are plenty more important issues going on right now than how we determine a national champion.

The problem is that the BCS is an absolute monopoly and there are many millions of dollars at stake for many of these schools (when dollars are pretty scarce everywhere) so when the BSC arbitrarily decides whether or not to reward someone with a BSC bowl bid worth millions – or more importantly the Championship bid worth many millions more – that makes a big difference to a small school like Cincinnati, Boise State or TCU.

And noone can force the BCS to make any changes EXCEPT Congress. I expect that most of the people supporting this bill don’t want government involved with football either, but since they are the only ones who can blow the whistle on a bad play, they should when they see one.

"Forcing Changes?"

hogan (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 11:56AM EST (link)

My problem here is “forcing the BCS to make… changes,” because this shouldn’t be the business of Congress – and “forcing” should be left to such a limited number of things that “football” wouldn’t even be on the radar screen.

Private Bowls can – AND SHOULD – get together and invite whomever they want. If a 7-5 Notre Dame will make more money for sponsors than another 13-0 team, so be it. It is what it is. If the schools want to change the system to a playoff – change it.

BUT, IT’S FOOTBALL…

Seriously – how many bills do we want Congress working on? How many aspects of your life do you want managed by these people?

I have to agree with humboldt

minister_of_war Tuesday, December 15th at 10:45AM EST (link)

on this.

A playoff would even slightly hurt my team since I am an Arizona fan & the University of Arizona is the only team out of the 21 teams in the Pac-10 or Big 10 that has never been to the Rose Bowl (which is the only important bowl game each year). So, if they made a playoff, Arizona might never get the chance to go to the Rose Bowl.

With that said, since the BCS allowed the infidel “Texas” to go to the Pac-10/Big 10 game a couple of years ago, it basically ruined the game anyway. At this point, the Rose Bowl is no longer pure anymore anyway. So, we should just go to a playoff system. Big bowl games should be part of the playoff if they want. It could be like the National Championship could always be the Rose Bowl & the Fiesta Bowl & Orange Bowl would be the NCAA Football Final Four. The Suger Bowl, the Gator Bowl, the Holiday Bowl & some other bigger bowl would be the first round of the 16 game NCAA football playoff. The BCS supporters who don’t want to change because of the money in the current system are really short-sighted. There would be WAY, WAY more money in a college football playoff. If the NCAA basketball tourney makes so much money, just imagine how much a football playoff would make when football is such a far superior sport.

Now that I’ve explained how simply a playoff system could work, I’m actually going to defend the involvement of Congress in the system. I don’t think that government should be so heavily involved in education. But it is. The federal government spends billions upon billions upon billions of dollars on state-run higher education facilities.

With all of this money in federal grants, those schools become addicted to more money. Schools all over the country try to find any ways possible to make extra money here & there. I am a fan of a BCS school in a BCS conference, but schools like TCU or Boise State or Utah (last year’s real National Champion) are kept from being able to use extra football revenue to slowly extricate themselves from their federal government money addictions. The money they gain from being allowed into games that they are currently prohibited from attending would help these schools begin that process.

Now, I am not naive enough to think that football revenue will completely squelch the addiction these schools have for federal government money, but maybe it will help. Senators do have an absolute duty to defend the rights of their individual States. Senators from States like Utah, Idaho, Alaska, Hawaii, Wyoming, or wherever else have a duty to their States to defend the rights of their States. And if those States and others are prohibited from participating in National Championship games set up arbitrarily by 6 computer nerds and other coaches who have vested interests to ensure that teams from their own conferences make the big game, there is a major anti-trust question that is arising which is directly involved with interstate commerce.

We need a playoff. If we can hold off on a playoff until after Arizona actually makes the Rose Bowl, I’d be happiest. But if not, so be it. No body will really be complaining when Congress forces the Mafia-style NCAA to set up a real playoff. Yes, it seems like government might be doing something that should be done by the private sector. But so few of the schools involved are actually even private schools to begin with.

I agree its a mixed bag

SirGladiator (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 5:01PM EST (link)

On the one hand, of course Congress should have nothing to do with sports, its insane. On the other hand, they’re totally right on this issue, we need a playoff system desperately, particularly this year when Texas Christian, clearly the best team in the Country, is shut out of the Championship despite not only having a perfect record but totally blowing out pretty much everybody they faced all year. Because they removed margin of victory from the computer ranking system a few years or so back, teams like Texas and Alabama can barely beat teams and it counts the same as TCU blowing their opponents out by 30 or 40 points. Its just not right, and it caused a great injustice this year. Sure, a win is a win, but a dominant win by 30 points is far more impressive than a win by a single point that only happened because you managed to use replay to get the referees to restart the game so you can kick a field goal with one extra second left. So while I agree that this really is none of Congress’ business, the fact is that discrimination against the smaller teams has caused yet another major injustice this year, and if that injustice is remedied with a playoff system I’ll be happy, even if its Congress that makes it happen. Better to be righting wrongs the wrong way than to be nationalizing health care, passing cap and tax, taking away our freedoms, etc.

It's all about control

ZZMike Friday, December 11th at 12:55PM EST (link)

That’s the start and end of it. They want to control everything. They want to control how we get medical care, they’ve already controlled what some businesses can pay their execs, through “climate change” they’re going to control where we live and work, and how we get from one to the other.

They’re not going to stop until either they own it all or we stop them. We need to do that. Use elections if necessary.
