RedState readers will recall previous posts regarding the misguided decision by Notre Dame to invite the decidedly anti-life President, Barack Obama, to give the commencement address this year (e.g., here). Today, Mary Ann Glendon – the pro-life Harvard Law School professor and former Ambassador to the Holy See – declined to receive Notre Dame’s Laetare Medal, an honor she was to receive at Notre Dame on commencement weekend.
The full story can be found at Catholic World News, but in her letter to Notre Dame, Professor Glendon summarizes her decision thusly:
A commencement, however, is supposed to be a joyous day for the graduates and their families. It is not the right place, nor is a brief acceptance speech the right vehicle, for engagement with the very serious problems raised by Notre Dame’s decision—in disregard of the settled position of the U.S. bishops—to honor a prominent and uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice.
Finally, with recent news reports that other Catholic schools are similarly choosing to disregard the bishops’ guidelines, I am concerned that Notre Dame’s example could have an unfortunate ripple effect.
It is with great sadness, therefore, that I have concluded that I cannot accept the Laetare Medal or participate in the May 17 graduation ceremony.
In order to avoid the inevitable speculation about the reasons for my decision, I will release this letter to the press, but I do not plan to make any further comment on the matter at this time.
Would that anyone in a position of leadership in Washington act on principle as has Mary Ann Glendon. Imagine the possibilities…….

And Pius XII was libelled and slandered by Nazis during the war and by communist fellow-travelers after. Do not be fooled by your sources. Their allegations come from Stalinist anti-Catholic propaganda.

Have you? 2/3 of the prisoners at Dachau were political prisoners, not Jews; many were Catholics including 2579 Catholic priests.
The defamation of Pius XII began in the early 60s with a ridiculous stage play called “The Deputy”. No reputable source had ever accused Pius XII of doing anything to assist the Nazis prior to that time. In fact, as noted in a comment below, the former chief rabbi of Rome became Catholic and took Eugenio, Pius XII’s original first name, as his baptismal name. Further Pius XII was recognized and lauded by many Jewish leaders of his time. No less that Golda Meir, then Israel’s Foreign Minister and a future Prime Minister wrote the following message of condolence to the Vatican upon Pius XII’s death in 1958:
“We share in the grief of humanity…When fearful martyrdom came to our people in the decade of Nazi terror, the voice of the Pope was raised for the victims. The life of our times was enriched by a voice speaking out on the great moral truths above the tumult of daily conflict. We mourn a great servant of peace.”
If Pius XII and the Catholic Church had in fact collaborated with the Nazis and ignored the Holocaust, Jewish leaders of the 1940s and 1950s should have been openly critical of the Pope and the Church. They were not.
Funny thing. There’s all sorts of “ex-Catholics” who can’t wait to bash the Church; why is it that converts to Catholicism never bash their former denominations?

WarEagle01 (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 10:39PM EST (link)It is now well established that those vicious accusations against the Holy Father Pope Pius XII were nothing by anti-Catholic smears. In fact, he did more than just about anyone to save Jewish lives–as I recall at least 800,000. Just guessing, but this probably had something to do with the war-time Rabbi of Rome converting to Catholicism. BTW, he chose Eugenio as his confirmation name after Eugenio Pacelli, aka Pope Pius XII.

Michael DeWeese (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 1:13AM EST (link)Is too much to rego over. The analogy works like this.
In the 30′s The RCC failed to speak out against the Nazi party and Hitler’s anti-semetic tendancies. The future Pope Pious XII signed a concordant legitimizing them in ’33. When the pure aggression started, the RCC begain criticizing and supported anti nazi movements. Too little, to late. A subgroup of the RCC, the majority of the German CC remained loyal to Hitler.
Now, the RCC failed to vociferously denounce Dear Leader ZerO for his Infanticide tendnecies. As a result, many Catholices voted for him, where non should have. A subset group of the catholic faith in America represented by Notre Dame is legitimizing him by having him speak and tacitly thereby his Infanticide tendencies.
The point being that the line is being moved back again, and not being stood strong on at an early time, before anything that is done is to little, to late, again.
He should not have been invited to Notre Dame, they are rationilizing their invitation, like the RCC rationilzed their early neutrality to Nazism.
Debating the exact timeline and culpability of individuals and organizations during the 15 years from 1930-1945 of the interaction between the RCC and Hitler is beyond the scope of a commentary, probably beyond the scope of several books.

mbecker908 (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 1:19AM EST (link)the argument that you make about the Holocaust – which I’m not – exactly WHAT does that have to do with this issue.
The Catholic Church has been steadfast in it’s teaching on abortion. If you want to criticize them for something, criticize them for not taking firmer action against so-called catholic elected officials who support abortion. On that issue you can make a good argument. Of course you have to make the same argument in relation to Evangelical churches who tolerate membership by proabortion reps as well.
This issue stands on it’s own merits and bringing up the Nazi crap (and it really is crap) or any other issue – like child abuse by priests, which is not crap – is nothing but deflection.
I’ll say once again, the Catholic Church leadership has been steadfast in their opposition to abortion. I wish the Protestant side of the aisle could say the same.
agree
Michael DeWeese (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 2:21AM EST (link)The RCC has been 100% against abortion. And it is the elected Catholics, and catholic institutions like Notre Dame that are weak on the issue that is the issue. It was the majority of the German Catholics that looked the other way and where even supportive of the holocaust, they where weak on the issue. They put state over morals. As the elected officials do now. As Notre Dame is doing. The point again is folks who are allowing state issues to override their conservative moral values. And then it becomes to late when they see the light. People are not standing by their convictions and are rationilizing an evil into not being an evil to stand against. Whereas Mary Ann Glendon is. Non of it is a deflection, it is a history that should not repeat itself. A lot of evil can be avoided without having to actually think hard about the pros and cons of an issue to determine which side will bring about more happiness or not in the future. Sometimes one side of an issue is just right no matter what because it will always bring about more happiness no matter what. I know it is impossible to foretell the future, but if catholics had not rationilized a neuatrality to Hitler anti semitism in the ealry 30′s, then the holocaust may not ever have happened. If catholics had not rationilze Obama’s infanticide and voted for him, he would not have been elected. It is to early yet to tell how many more unborn will be killed because he was. Nor am I disparaging all catholics, just the ones that allowed personal or state issues to over ride their conservative moral values and allow an evil to grow a little stronger.
Protestants don’t have the equivalent of a Pope to give leadership on moral issues do they?

Protestants don’t have the equivalent of a Pope to give leadership on moral issues do they?
Opening a can of worms, he said, no they don’t have a Pope and I’m not implying that Catholics don’t have the following, just saying that for Protestants it’s an article of faith that Protestants have the revealed Word of God – the Bible – the Holy Spirit living within to reveal it’s truth and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who has redeemed us and who speaks to us through both His Word and through His Holy Spirit.
You’re “upset” because Catholics are willing to ignore the Pope, a mere man (Protestant theology) while Protestants are willing to ignore the Living God. Theologically and practically, you should be shrugging your shoulders at the Catholics and constructing a stone pit for Protestants.

jano4 Monday, April 27th at 8:32PM EST (link)Be a sad day for my brother and his family. My nephew is graduating from Notre Dame to become a priest, and he has seriously considered not attending the ceremony. Yet he wants to be there for his son. Now as a family they may all boycott the graduation. It is indeed sad that this joyous occasion will be forever marred by this. Notre Dame’s administration is WRONG on this. At some point we must all take a stand, and if the Catholic Church can not on this issue….well the end may indeed be near.
Instead of boycotting. . .
GarWil Monday, April 27th at 11:27PM EST (link)why not attend the ceremony? Then, when Obama goes up to speak, stand and turn one’s back to him, perhaps with outstretched arms for dramatic effect. No yelling — just a silent testimony convicting him of those lives that have been silenced through abortion. If enough people choose to do this I think it would have a greater impact than empty seats. This way he and the nation as well as the MSM will have to see the protest rather than pretend it doesn’t exist. I would think there are sufficient numbers of graduates, parents, family, alumni, and even faculty who would be willing to participate. I know I would if I had the opportunity to be there.
Unfortunately, though, Obama now has the stage to himself
smagar (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 11:12PM EST (link)He’ll address his pro-choice views in a way framed to make himself look as good as possible.
I’ll bet that neither Father Jenkins nor any other graduation speaker—except, perhaps, the valedictorian—will lay a glove on Obama, or even try to challenge him. I expect Father Jenkins will mildly admonish him for his pro-choice views. Obama will nod knowingly, and that will be that.
Plus, I’ll bet that, this time, Obama doesn’t cover up the Catholic symbols.
“Who will stand/On either hand/And guard this bridge with me?” (Macaulay)
Perhaps Father Jenkins is more in tune with the Catholic mainstream than Ms. Glendon
smagar (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 11:23PM EST (link)It’s hard to ignore the evidence:
In 2008, the Democrats ran a candidate whose pro-choice views were the most strident of any Presidential candidate to date. Senior Catholic leaders—Archbishop Chaput of Denver, Cardinal Rigazzi (sp?) of Philadelphia—spoke out about the importance of the pro-life position to American Catholicism.
It was crystal-clear that the Democrats would handliy control the Senate, to include the Senate Judiciary. Thus, Obama + a Democratic Senate would almost assuredly yield a federal judiciary stacked with healthy Kate Michaelman think-alikes. Those new pro-choice judges would de facto make Roe V Wade the 11th Commandment for the next generationl
And yet, more than 50% of American Catholics voted for Obama.
That damage to the pro-life movement cannot be undone. There’s nothing to stop Obama from packing the judiciary and no reason to think he won’t, if he fears the Senate might slip from Democratic control. If I were him (perish the thought), I’d certainly do it. Federal judges are forever.
And that brings us to Notre Dame.
I may have missed it, but I don’t recall any news stories about massive protests by the Notre Dame student body over Obama’s selection. Plenty of American Catholics are mad, yes, but overall the students seem fine with it.
Perhaps Father Jenkins knows his students better than the Catholic bishops do.
I’m sorry to say it, because I’ve long admired the Catholic faith for its strict defense of the unborn. But, it seems as if fewer and fewer Catholics are motivated to mount that defense.

Most of the Black churches in the Carolinas that I have been around become political organizations around election time, spewing politics and vote for the Demoncrat from the pulpit.
Really sad, there will be a price to pay for throwing Jesus under the bus, if not here, later.
That is not to disparage the churches , black and otherwise, that are about their Father’s business. I commend them.
And I have a basic problem with a “white” church or a “black” church.
Neither is Biblical. Sunday morning services in Protestant churches used to be the most segregated gatherings in the country.
I trust that number is improving.
The bottom line as smagar, brings to light, there are a lot of people in church every week that are lying to their self or their God.
