Statism cloaked as “National Service” – A Snapshot of Republican Failure

This morning I received an email from the RNC asking for my input about the “state of the Republican Party” and, then of course, for a contribution. I gave my input, but they will not be getting any of my money. They simply would waste it, trotting after the latest theory of some pet consultant or Washington egomaniac telling them they need to “be for something.”

Republicans often find themselves trying to figure out the primary reasons for the Party’s collapse since its high point (at least on paper) in 2004. And while there are a lot of good arguments… one needn’t look much further than last night’s vote on the “Serve America Act” to get a glimpse of the Party’s rot at its core.

This pathetic vote shows you how far the Party has slid from principle toward expedience and mediocrity. This is what the Party has become… a group of Washington insiders more interested in self-promotion and feel-good talking points than in promoting freedom, personal (and familial) responsibility, self-reliance, limited government, local control, and private enterprise (be it for profit or for charity).

The bill passed by a vote of 79-19-1… that is, with a majority of Republican Senators (22). So a majority of Republican Senators are perfectly comfortable inserting Washington – that great paragon of efficiency and productivity – into the great American tradition of charity, and doing so at unprecedented levels.

But this is how Washington works – even as I receive emails from the RNC asking for my input into the “state” of the Party. A majority of Republicans support a bill that is terribly flawed and contrary to fundamental American principles… it is a long and complicated bill… it was jammed through while the budget debates filled the news… it is hardly known, much less understood by most Americans… it sounds wonderful on paper (it has such a lofty title with such noble goals – who on earth could oppose it?)… and it had the holiest of holies – bipartisan support (the magic word…).

But it is not an American bill. It could not be further from our core American principles. It’s not in our blood to take money through the force of law (taxation), and then inefficiently re-distribute it (over $5 Billion) through government programs to charities chosen and dictated by bureaucrats – all in the name of helping people. DAMN IT… THAT’S NOT HOW WE WORK. But it sure as hell is how these unprincipled Washington Republicans work.

Below is the list of Republican Senators who supported this damaging and un-American legislation. It is worth noting that a few of them will be facing political challenges this election cycle – notably, Senators Hutchison (Governor’s race in Texas), Bennett (a possible primary challenge in Utah), Murkowski (speculation of a primary challenge in AK) and Specter (a likely challenge by Toomey in PA). So, a message to Rick Perry, Pat Toomey and other challengers – remind your constituents that these people don’t believe in freedom and are perfectly content to turn over our personal charitable efforts to the federal government to micro-manage.

And a message to those who are not facing a tough challenge… When you ask yourself what is wrong with the Republican Party… look in the mirror to find the answer.

Praying (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 2:17PM EST (link)

And that is the problem. Long gone are the days when we can trust our elected officials to actually do what is best for the country. I know the GOP is getting a lot of heat for being “partisan” but damnit, that is exactly what they were elected to be!! What is the purpose of having two parties when one of them has to abandon all principles in order to “get along”? I took the time to email every single GOP senator on this bill – and sent an especially harsh message to those that voted for cloture. Bob Corker (TN) had the good sense to change his mind and vote NO last night, unfortunately, Lamar Rino Alexander did not. It’s going to be a long six years for Lamar Alexander – I have personally vowed to make his life hell. I’m sure some of my Tennessee RS friends will join me…

All the distractions, smoke screens, etc. When there is much ado going on in Washington we need to train ourselves to be IMMEDIATELY suspicious. It is the liberals trying to sneak in some huge constitution denying, liberty and freedom busting legislation. We the people are getting madder, and madder, and madder. Where is the transparency we were promised? Oh yea – expiration dates. I think Obama has expired…

Very few people even know what Washington gave away last night. Come on, RS Army. Write, call, make their lives miserable. There is no excuse for this nonsense. I will NOT have my children indoctrinated. I will NOT be told who to give my time and money to – not a problem for the leftist libbys – they don’t donate to charity anyway. I do. I donate to religious and pro-life organizations. I’m sure those will be right at the top of the volunteer opportunities under this insidious plan. NOT.

Hannity hit this a little last night – but even most of the rightful talking heads have given it little attention. We are clearly a nation of idiots. A confederacy of dunces. A cesspool of humanity. Like the Israelites, we are destined to wander in the wilderness for 4o years. And it will only be that short a time if we are lucky.

Republican's are expediting their own demise.

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 2:19PM EST (link)

This is another clarion call for new leadership. For too long, we have been abandoned by those who say they represent us and ask for our patronage. The mob rules in the Washington Republican establishment. There is no discipline, consistency of message or fealty to principle. There are no leaders, only bit actors who can not inspire or provide a basis for cohesion.

How long do we follow and support those who fail us? The time is now for their political demise and representation that shares in our values. It is time for people that have courage of conviction no matter what circumstance, political handshake or temptation they are offered. They do not understand the mood of their real constituency and are tone deaf to the screeching sounds of our sincere chorus of disquietude.

I would quote John Adams speaking of our government;

“Can authority be more amiable and respectable when it descends from accidents or institutions established in remote antiquity than when it springs fresh from the hearts and judgments of an honest and enlightened people? For it is the people only that are represented. It is their power and majesty that is reflected, and only for their good, in every legitimate government, under whatever form it may appear.”

Perhaps our party should read more and understand that their authority springs from the wells of our countries citizens, and in this case supporters of the Republican party.

Not one more dime or ounce of support will I give to such detestable and destructive behavior, not one, until principled, consistent leadership returns.

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

You May Not Realize This...

IJB Friday, March 27th at 6:43PM EST (link)

In fact, many around here may not realize it, but what’s implicit in what you’re saying is the necessity of a forming a new party.

When an institution is so thoroughly rotted through that its foundations are gone, the answer is not a renovation, but a complete tear-down and start over.

I don’t know if we’re there yet. But when more than half of the elected leadership in DC spits on the principles the party stands for (repeatedly!), I’m not sure there’s a party worth saving anymore.

Maybe these guys will “get religion”, soon.

But, if they don’t, it will be time for some serious soul searching…

The Little Red Book

ddstrain (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 2:29PM EST (link)

I have a copy of Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book. I’ve skimmed through it several times since Halloween.

[To diverge for a moment, I had the Little Red Book out on Halloween, because my I was in costume as an Obamabot. Shabby clothes, unshaven for a few days, spouting slogans and avoiding facts...the whole she-bang.]

In any case, I see our culture and society being pushed down the path one reads in the Little Red Book … rather than the path one reads in the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Bill or Rights or any of the other documents written by the Framers.

To the extent possible, my children wil NOT participate in THEIR version of volunteerism. Their volunteerism is coerced. No one will force my kids. Volunteerism is VOLUNTARY.

We will serve as WE decide.

And They've Let Geithner Slide for His Dollar Comment

farstar99 (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 2:30PM EST (link)

And they’ve let Geithner slide for his dollar comment and the economic damage that caused.

Not only don’t they respond quickly to lies and the destruction of our freedom, but they don’t respond at all.

What are these morons doing with the campaign money they get?
Because they obviously aren’t hiring smart people!

Steele is proof the party is rudderless and clueless. He’s talking about becoming more hip-hop when Americans need to hear about freedom and protection from big government.

Every opportunity, every chance, they throw away.

They’re not the solution any more. They’ve all become RINOs.

The only real solution is to liberate America from the tyranny of the cities and the coasts.

It will take a war.

Any ideas on how to protest this?

mom2oneson (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 3:01PM EST (link)

What do we do? Do we show up with our kids in the parking lot of the complex where the senator’s office is? I am sure MANY mothers would show up to protest this.

Second question, it’s not final yet right?

mine as well stay home in 2010 & 2012, because they still do not get it. Stop the ramming through of bills and acts, this was never the point of our Constitutional Government.

No one cares anymore (except maybe 40 million of us, unfortunately there is 50 million+ of them), besides we seem to be the only people paying attention. What is this now 4 or 5 monster bills in less than 100 days, and nobody knows what is in them, that is my point, and no one cares. Welcome to the United Socialist States of America (USSA), get with it, enjoy it because when the 3.7 Trillion budget goes through the final nail in the U.S.A. coffin is complete! That is it, I just do not see any point anymore, wasting my lifes breath and fingers to save a country that does not want to be saved. Whats the point, we might as well just learn to find our path through the mess to get our family through as best we can. I will not believe America cares until all of the politicians that are currently in the elected office are all thrown out. I am more angry with the REPUBLICANS right NOW then the Democrats who I expect this from. DAMN you, Republican Senators and Representatives. This is why I will not donate any money to the GOP for the sake of just opposing Obama, why you are doing the same Gosh Darn thing. ARRRGGGHHHH

Scary!

It is a shame this got passed. It was going to pass with or without these RINOs. Conservatives need to take back this party and boot these wannabes. What the GOP needs to understand real fast that Conservative are NOT going to vote for wimps and RINOs anymore. WE are only going to vote for CONSERVATIVES!

"Write, call, make their lives miserable." -- might work, probably not

ColdWarrior (Diary) Friday, March 27th at 4:48PM EST (link)

Praying said above, “Write, call, make their lives miserable.”

Of course we should do that. And I have. But they all have paid staffers to take that heat. Do you think the faxes and e-mails even get read for content? Probably not. They just churn out a form letter back to you.

Want to send a message and make a real impact? I do. That’s why I joined the Party and got elected as a real, functioning member of the Party as a precinct committeeman. Was able to vote in my legislative district for a conservative chairman. Was able to vote in the Maricopa County Republican Party Chariman election against the moderate and for the conservative, helping to make this little part of the Party more conservative. Got to vote for the electors who went to the AZ Party election meeting to try to make sure the moderate Republican did not unseat the incumbent “prettty conservative” chairman. Got to rally a bunch of other PCs to pressure the “leaders” of the County and AZ Party to get their act together to fix their web sites (OMG, the AZ Party website now has a link to the 2008 Party Platform rather than the 2004 Platform — I’m not making this up — but the County web site still has a link to the 2004, not the 2008, Platform. And the AZ web site still has no links to the 2008 platform).

If the Party in the next few months saw around the country an upsurge in conservatives going to the legislative district meetings to volunteer to become precinct committeeman, THAT would send a message.

If every RedStater who is not yet a precinct committeeman called their respective state Party office and said, “Hi, I’m John Doe and I’m a conservative and I would like your help in steering me to where to go so I can join the Party as a precinct committeeman,” THAT would send a message they would hear.

If every conservative going to the Tea Parties did the same, THAT would send a message. (I’m trying to get the Tea Party organizers to have someone from the Party included in the speakers to make a pitch for people to become PCs.)

I believe the only thing that will make a difference is making the current officeholders believe they will be challenged in the next primary. The best way to send that signal to them is to join the Party and work to find good conservative candidates who will run against the current officeholders.

As John McCain said to the Heritage Foundation a day or two ago, “Elections have consequences.” Doh! Voting records have consequences, too, in primary elections, but only if you’re in a position to help make the primary a real contest.

Again, if you really want to change the country, start by becoming a Republican Party Precinct Committeeman! The most powerful office in the world because Precinct Committeemen determine who gets the chance to be elected to office at every level of government.

1. To change things, we must change the laws.

2. To change the laws, we must change the people who make them.

3. To get elected, your candidate must be on the ballot.

4. To get on the November ballot you must win the Primary.

5. To win the Primary, you must get the support of people who make endorsements in the Primary, who reliably vote in the Primary, and who get out the vote of others in the Primary. Those people are the Precinct Committeemen.

Most importantly, Precinct Committeemen get to vote in the Party elections that determine the leadership of the Party. The more conservatives who become Precinct Committeemen, the more conservative the Party, and its candidates, will become. The Party again might appear to the voters to offer a clear choice from the Democrat Party, rather than an echo of it.

Go here to learn more:

The Most Powerful Office in the World is NOT the President of the United States. ( http://www.eagleforum.org/misc/brochures/precinct-committman.shtml )

By becoming a Precinct Committeeman, you get to ACTUALLY VOTE for the Party leadership. YOU GET TO CAST A VOTE FOR YOUR LOCAL REPUBLICAN LEADERS UP TO THE COUNTY LEVEL, AND THEN GET TO ELECT ELECTORS WHO ELECT THE STATE AND NATIONAL PARTY LEADERS. If those who accept, understand and advocate conservative principles become a majority IN THE PARTY RANKS, guess what? The Party leadership voted in will be those who accept, understand and advocate conservative principles. This just happened here in Arizona.

If we had more conservative voting members of the Party, we might have gotten Ken Blackwell elected as the RNC Chair instead “hip hop” Michael Steele.

And, of course, in the meantime, keep sending the faxes and making the phone calls. I called McCain’s local office just now demanding he tell me in writing what clauses of Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution he claims gives him the authority to allow the federal government to force — force! — my kids — kids! — to “give service” to ANYONE! I also demanded that he meet with me in person to explain it.

I also, like many of you, refuse to give any money to the national Republican committees because they fund the campaigns of the moderates who voted for this monstrous bill.

But, in the end, the only thing that really matters is who gets elected. “Elections have consequences.” And I hope the next one, the primary, will have a bad consequence for McCain.

Thank you.

In 2012, will YOU become a “voting member” of the Republican Party in your precinct?

From the esteemed Senator Isakson (R-GA)

donnac1188 Friday, March 27th at 6:57PM EST (link)

“This week, the Senate considered and passed legislation to reauthorize and expand the National and Community Service Act of 1990. The bill is supported by President George H.W. Bush’s Points of Light Institute, Atlanta-based Hands on Network, and it reauthorizes President George W. Bush’s USA Freedom Corps as well as the Peace Corps, which was led by the late Georgia Republican Senator Paul Coverdell.”

“The House version of this legislation was a non-starter for me. In the Senate version of the bill, Republicans successfully removed 16 of the 40 programs authorized under the original National Service Act that were either duplicative or proven to be ineffective. This comprehensive reauthorization allows Congress to repeal a number of ineffective programs, improve the management of AmeriCorps and hold national service grantees more accountable. The House is expected to pass the Senate version of the legislation next week.”

“Although I have concerns regarding the new spending it requires, I support this legislation. At a time when our economy is struggling, I believe it is important to provide opportunities for our citizens to help those around them in need.”

Now, doesn’t that make you feel a whooooole lot better??? The Senate removed 16 items (wonder what great improvement that was), and increased the size of Americorps from 75,000 to 250,000–oops, forgot to mention that. I guess, because he threw in George Bush (2 times) and Paul Coverdell, may he rest in peace, the sheep are supposed to say, “Oh, isn’t this just so nice, and so kind! What a kind government we have…”

I e-mailed Isakson and Saxby Chambliss about this VERY issue and vociferously told them, in no uncertain terms, my feelings concerning this bill! I swear they are absolutely tone deaf.

Oh, and I got the “questionnaire” from the RNC as well; but they’ll not get one red cent from me; because, at this point, I blame them more than the Dems. They squandered their chance and hung us all out to dry.

I got the exact same email from the RNC and reacted the exact same way the Author of this article did. Everywhere I could, I tried to let Mr. Steele know that I see the Republican Party through the lens of Specter, Collins, McCain, Graham, and Snowe. I also tried to let Mr. Steele know that until he can come to grips with reality, I would not be sending any money either. But it was an interesting change for the RNC to want to communicate with donors. For years all I have ever received was a Donate Button.

Response from Saxby Chambliss...

donnac1188 Monday, March 30th at 2:41PM EST (link)

Isn’t it a riot? I received a response to my entreaty to Saxby not to vote for this bill, and his response was:

“Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 277, the “Serve America Act.” It is good to hear from you.”

“S. 277 was introduced on January 16, 2009 and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. This legislation would establish new service related programs aimed at creating volunteer opportunities for Americans. Among the new programs established would be the ServeAmerica Corps that would provide grants to states and nonprofit organizations to fund national service in low-income communities. It would also create the Youth Engagement Zones to Strengthen Communities program and the Campus of Service Program to engage students in service-learning activities and to assist students in pursuit of public service careers.”

“Further, it would create a Volunteer Generation Fund to award grants to states and nonprofits to increase the capacity of volunteers to address state priorities. It also would establish a National Service Reserve Corps to respond to national disasters and other emergencies.”

“Volunteer and service work are bedrocks of our American values. I believe all citizens should take the time to give back to their community. Should this legislation come before the full Senate, I will keep your views in mind.”

Of course, this is somewhat after the fact since he voted for it last week; but who could expect less when you’re represented, in the Senate, by two RHINOs.

My parting shot, back to him, was: “Please be sure to keep us apprised of how much of this $6B winds up in the coffers of ACORN. Oh, and let me know about those blueberries, too…sure want to know how that turns out…” (A blueberry research grant was one of his contributions to the porkulus bill.)

You know, I really TRY not to be reactive; but sometimes I just can’t help it. Lord deliver me from idiots.
