Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto

Few books come along that I actually believe everyone should read. There simply are not that many good books in the world today, much less ones that most people could possibly get something out of. But, our friend Mark Levin has written such a book – and I recommend that we conservatives should either give, or promote, the book to literally everyone we know.

Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto manages to take a number of complex legal, historical, and philosophical concepts and distill them into a well-constructed but easy-to-read snapshot of our current state of affairs. That is not an easy thing to do.

We live in a strange time. As Mark points out in his book, “[s]o distant is America today from its founding principles that it is difficult to precisely describe the nature of American government.” He notes that we are hardly a constitutional republic, federalist republic and/or representative republic – rather, we are instead a “society steadily transitioning toward statism.”

Indeed, “Statist” is the term he uses artfully to more accurately define the Modern Liberal as one who “believes in the supremacy of the state.” This concept is a constant theme throughout his book – and offers an important and necessary shift in thinking for conservatives toward a firm recognition that those who oppose us are committed to the state rather than liberty.

In the closing of his introductory chapter, Mark points out the following:

The Conservative is alarmed by the ascent of a soft tyranny and its cheery acceptance by the neo-Statist. He knows that liberty once lost is rarely recovered. He knows of the decline and eventual failure of past republics. And he knows that the best prescription for addressing society’s real and perceived ailments to is not to further empower an already enormous federal government beyond its constitutional limits, but to return to the founding principles. A free people living in a civil society, working in self-interested cooperation, and a government operating within the limits of its authority promote more opportunity, prosperity and opportunity than any alternative. Conservatism is the antidote to tyranny because its principles are the founding principles.

Well said – and instructive during a time when Republicans, as we’ve discussed before, need to get back to basics and stand for something meaningful – something beyond thoughtless, supposedly politically-expedient efforts to buy votes and to “appeal” to certain demographics.

Getting back into power is not reason enough to stand on our basic conservative principles even though it may be the result. We need more than power-seeking – we need to stand on principle to fight the Statist… to inspire new generations of Americans to look to themselves rather than the State for progress… and to band together in the most noble of earthly causes – to preserve and protect liberty against tyranny. Thanks, Mark. Well done.

Levin says: "Conservatism is the antidote to tyranny because

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 10:58AM EST (link)

its principles are the founding principles.”

Yes, but we must go one step further and explain WHY the founding principles are the anti-dote.

The reason is the RESULTS of the application of those principles that made us the most prosperous nation in world history BY FAR. So prosperous that the poor are obese AND we still have enough wealth left over to build a military second to none even stronger than dictatorships that enslave their people and others for megalomaniacal conquests.

Its not enough to say “founding principles”. We have to explain how those principles of private property and the incentives flowing therefrom led to and will lead to more prosperity.

he explains why as well as anyone on radio and, I am sure, in this book.

Talk radio is my background noise. I pay for two sites: WSJ and Rush

Levin annoys the heck out of me

AKSteveB (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 1:51PM EST (link)

on radio. It is that style thing again, he is a shouter. Having said that, I read this book over the weekend and it is a masterpiece. There is a really strong intellect there that wasn’t apparent (to me) on the radio.

Speaking of radio, Fred Thompson’s show is really growing on me. I’m gonna have to d/l it because it goes against Prager in the time slot here. I’m starting to see why the Fredheads love the guy.

well on the radio. I know he has lots of fans, and National Review even lets him blog at The Corner, but the guy’s got a voice made for newspaper journalism, nor is it apparent that he’s terribly intelligent (although he’s clearly not dumb).

But the highly intelligent Michael Ledeen himself said he loved this book, so I think I’ll have to take a look.

Levin's a genuine constitutional scholar

and he has argued cases in front of the Supreme Court – putting him in pretty rarified air. “Men in Black” was superb, and not at all like one might expect if all you knew about him was the radio show.

But the radio show – ugh. It’s my impression that the radio show is his outlet for venting – the way some of us kickbox or hunt, or play softball.

I am buying dozens of these and will give them to my friends.

Mark is one of the most honest, right thinkers we have.

Last summer he had Obama pegged and it spurred me on

to research the Obama trail. Mark was and is 110% correct!!

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

but I’ll get the book, eventually. And, hopefully, the library will have it.

It’s just things are financially hard right now. If I didn’t have to have internet access I probably wouldn’t but I have to have it for the little business I do. Hubby is on the road in his new career but until we get caught up it’s going to be no frills in the budget.

Godwin's Law

MikeO Tuesday, March 24th at 1:06PM EST (link)

In the last nearly twenty years, people who participate in electronic discussion have been programmed to reject any analogy to Hitler or his NSDAP reflexively.

This has left a vast shadow under cover of which TOTUS is building this program. Only a fool willing to cripple his own argument and reputation under Usenet rules would dare to mention the obvious similarities between this AmeriCorps expansion and the youth movements that gave domestic muscle to the personality cults that poisoned the 20th century.

Mark my words as I give this dead horse another thwack:

1. ACORN and AmeriCorps are going to open storefronts throughout this country

2. HUD will give them lists of Section 8 households in their local areas

3. ACORN and AmeriCorps will hire “disadvantaged youths” and pay them to sit around playing XBox all day long

Come time for census data collection, voter registration, community agitation, or demonstrations against whomever is targeted for any given week’s three-minute hate, INSTANT THUG ARMY.

I wonder if they will get "priority"

mom2oneson (Diary) Tuesday, March 24th at 1:12PM EST (link)

above the homeless on that section 8 list.

They will

MikeO Tuesday, March 24th at 1:37PM EST (link)

We taxpayers already provide them housing, so the Section 8 housing people are cheaper than the homeless.

Also, don’t forget that pecking order is more brutally observed among those whose poor life choices leave them little else.

"Irregulars" Don't Beat "Regulars"

IJB Tuesday, March 24th at 1:41PM EST (link)

That’s the flaws in the radical Dems’ plans.

But some people just have to learn lessons the hard way.

And I’m betting most of us around here are ready, willing and able to contribute to the “learning” that may be a’comin’…

Static Outlook

MikeO Tuesday, March 24th at 2:11PM EST (link)

Nearly all of the hard lefties I know are pathologically incurious. They take great comfort from the simplification to be found in circular reasoning.

Take something as simple as your kitchen faucet: Do you think TOTUS has any idea of how much has to go right to have it dispense potable water when you operate the valve? The hard left is populated with the kinds of idiots who saw it dispense water yesterday, see it dispense water today, and extrapolates that it will always dispense water until the end of time. Since that’s so well settled, they can proceed full-bore with their plans to outlaw the use of chlorine in water treatment or the burning of coal to pump the water because it’s bad for the environment.

TOTUS has the same view of activism against The Man. The Man didn’t hit back yesterday. The Man isn’t hitting back today. So, The Man will never hit back until the end of time. TOTUS doesn’t know that there is a breaking point for The Man, and that the effects of The Man’s leaving the game cannot be understood by this dim bulb until The Man does choose to leave the game.

Levin strong against illegal immigration

publiussteve Tuesday, March 24th at 11:57AM EST (link)

I also listen to Levin just about every day. Can’t wait to read his book.

I also appreciate his strong stance against illegal immigration. We’ll need him and other talk radio hosts to rally the grass roots again when Obama starts peddling his “comprehensive immigation reform” amnesty scheme for millions of illegal aliens.

She started to speak out but was dubbed obsessive and boring.

I went to Borders on the way to work today to pick up the book. I searched the entire store and couldnt find it. So I ask a assistant for some help. We go over and look on the computer and it says its in the store. So the lady goes out back and says they have the books and thier still packed away in crates. I was told they would get around to putting the books out later. Unbelievable
