Unemployed Men

I have had a lot on my mind lately.  I own a small carpentry business in Seattle, and have been hopping for the last year and a half to keep some kind of work going.  It has gone well, considering, but lately the pressure has really been getting to me.  In February, I found out the Prime Contractor and bank had made final agreement on the terms of a deed-in-lieu, and had signed the papers.  I had not been informed  they were negotiating this.  That meant my last month of work would go unpaid, and suddenly I had no work scheduled.  Two months later the bank offered 35 cents on the dollar to buy out the lien I had placed.

But that is not why I am writing this diary today.  We have an election coming up, that will have an extremely profound impact on our future.  As Conservative Republicans, we tend to focus on the economy, and individual responsibility.  Picking ourself up by the bootstraps, self-made men, and the success story are our stock-in-trade.  However, no success operates in a vacuum.  We depend on other people and institutions doing there function, for our job or business to work.

More to the point, I know that many of the Redstate community have been out of work for some time.  We have been totally focussed on stopping the Obama agenda, and rightly, but some human elements have been ignored.  I wanted to make an oppurtunity for some to share their experiences, and also to ask us to consider the impact of this recession.  I read an excellent article by Don Peck in The Atlantic.  It is very long, but read at least page 3.  I don’t agree with his conclusion, but he brings up some very troubling aspects of the recession that will affect our future as citizens of this country.  Much of the article is academic, but it jibes with what I was told directly by people who had gone through the Great Depression.  There is another side of social conservatism that is rarely discussed, and that is the impact of economics on the family.  Failed families, besides tragic, also increase the cost of social spending, and burden the growth and benefits of a growing economy.   Please read and consider this article.  I believe our conversation, and platform needs to grow.  If we are going to convince people to join our Party, we are going to have to meet them where they are at.

Is the destruction of traditional families a goal???

pilotguy40 (Diary) Monday, April 19th at 3:24AM EST (link)

So much has been done during my lifetime that is destructive of family values. The governments collusion in this with organizations such as ACORN seems undeniable. Add to this what was done to destroy the middle class by moving jobs out of this country to countries who want to see our destruction (CHINA) is treasonous.

Prayers and best wishes to you during this time of stress.

I'm going to write in future articles

hickorystick (Diary) Monday, April 19th at 11:08AM EST (link)

about how many industries we abandoned, in the name of the environment and cheaper prices. Costcos and Walmarts built fortunes designing and having built products in China, to have prices cheaper in America. The cost in jobs is born by the Federal government……for a time. Here in Washington, we had the spotted owl debate. Loggers of generations lost their trade, and a good paying trade, and some lost their families and homes, for an animal. All so a overpaid office professional can feel good about himself saving the planet.

this is an excellent idea

I’m all for a discussion at the national level about protectionism, keeping jobs in this country through tariffs and not driving the American worker the wage and living level of third world countries. I’m not sure the Republican party is ready for that discussion however.

This country could use an adult conversation about what sort of employment opportunity we are leaving behind for our children, the Donks have one answer, not sure how populist the Republican brand is willing to have that conversation.

hickorystick, this is a complex and bedrock subject

ColdWarrior (Diary) Monday, April 19th at 4:30AM EST (link)

Obviously, Obama and the Leftists are bent on destroying real jobs and replacing them with as many government jobs as possible during their short window of opportunity between now and the Nov. 2010 elections.

I was fortunate to be brought up by people who lived through the Great Depression. I asked them about it when I was knee-high to a howitzer and they told me it wasn’t so bad for them because all of my relatives grew up on dairy farms in Wisconsin. They explained that they were able to grow their food.

Some also told me how their uncles cried when they had to slaughter livestock according to FDR’s policies.

Their frugality, reinforced by the Great Depression, has rubbed off on me. I can’t throw away anything until I ask, “Could I use this in the future.” Rubber bands. Paper clips. An old shirt. Coffee cans. Nuts. Screws. Any tool. Anything that might be used as a tool or serve some useful purpose.

The American people had a collective “brain fart” in electing Barack Hussein Obama. This will be corrected in 2010 and 2012. Provided enough Americans spend a few hours a month in party politics — and become “ball players” in the real ball game of politics — party politics — as precinct committeemen in the Republican Party.

Thank you.

too. I really like your plan Cold Warrior. It helps people take charge of their future and their world. I’m going to speak up, and hopefully the PCO’s will have a couple extra ideas to talk about at meetings, other than the latest conservative talking points. The world is going to change a lot in the next couple years. It’s not all on Obama. Bush tried to change the course economically, but mostly failed. We, as Republicans, are going to have to come into those meetings with some new ideas. And we can’t wait for the national level politicians to think them up. They have their own interests to protect. We will need to instruct them on what we want them to work on.

I have to admit, we've lost touch

It is a bad situation for many

kyle8 (Diary) Monday, April 19th at 7:24AM EST (link)

I have been looking for a permanent teaching job but have only been able to work as a substitute due to budget cuts and because the normal teacher turnover is not there. (people are staying in their jobs because the economy is bad).

What is worse is that we now have to cover expenses for my mother in law because she made such a mess of her life she now has nothing but a little bit of social security.

Funny how I have been paying big taxes my whole life but now that my family is in need that is not much offered by the government to help is there?

but because of economic events, oppurtunities are not there. Then some are helped by the tax receiving government, but not others. That’s the trap were in. And it has consequences on relationships. The Republican presidential candidates couldn’t see this in 08. As a party we need to see it in ’10, and ’12. a lot of people are going to be looking for solutions.

It's really tough out there

texasgalt (Diary) Tuesday, April 20th at 1:03AM EST (link)

and the pain is far worse in some parts of the country than others.

But people who are out of a job or underemployed might have to look at doing work they don’t really want to do. I have people turn down jobs all the time because they will not work on Saturday – I am talking about people who are on unemployment.

There is NO easy way out of the current situation. Less government and lower taxes would mean more jobs- but we are faced with incredible deficits and social spendng liabilities. The first move should be to end the extended unemployment. It is horribly expensive and it is keeping people from having to deal with the fact that they most likely ARE NOT going to have the job or the salary they once had. Not going to happen.

Theres realy only two choices: We get our minds right, take the pain and start to dig ourselves out or . . . we are Greece.

One directon is less painful than the other and actually offers a future . . .for our kids, at least. It is hard to say what is really going to happen. The pain and dislocation is more than many people will want to face.

Personally, I suggest hanging on to all the bailing wire and scraps possible. It is that bad.

I have to agree with you

southeasttexas (Diary) Tuesday, April 20th at 3:50AM EST (link)

I agree that continuing to reinforce unemployment compensation is a mistake. It fails to provide people an incentive to seek gainful employment, and gives way for employment applicant demands I consider unfair and unreasonable to small business owners like myself. To put this mildly, I can’t afford to pay someone $35.00 per hour to do what my company does.

I also firmly believe we have to do something to place restrictions on entitlements. Entitlements should provide a basis for people to better themselves; and, should not be a way of life. Far too many people have existed for generation after generation on welfare, housing assistance, free medical and dental care, etc. They make no attempt whatsoever to better themselves either by seeking employment or obtaining training or education toward better paying employment.

I fear America is becoming a nation of “gimme” and and doers.

I'm sure I can afford $35.00 a hour in my business

but I do have another way for my workers to make money, so much from washing an airplane in commission. I’m considering making it easy for them to do their taxes by having my accountant help them in filling them out. I don’t like handouts and unemployment compensation has become a crutch. The same goes with welfare, although we didn’t really do Welfare reform correctly either. It has to be done right, or it’s not good.

Texas X 2, what your saying is try

hickorystick (Diary) Tuesday, April 20th at 8:51PM EST (link)

I would suggest allowing the unemployed to keep half their benefit if the go tho work, and it shrinks the longer they work. Unemployment ins. has been a disincentive to get a job for some. Others are on it that have a working spouse that is making good money. I think there should be some means testing and some flexibility in the program.
What I am really concerned about is the Fathers. The recession has creamed them, especially in construction and manufacturing. The professional class sees no reason or this country to mine or manufacture or construct anything. They are too used to being served.

You create a greater need and demand for goods and services and for employment. You fill tasks with more people, some working fewer hours. That’s partially why the Netherlands has not suffered as much in terms of unemployment.

I'm good with a heavy tariff on China

hickorystick (Diary) Monday, April 19th at 1:23PM EST (link)

but I’m not sure what the labor laws in the Netherlands look like. Could you elaborate on that?
Supporting China with most favored nation status, while we have 18% unemployment is nuts. They dump heavy metals into the rivers, abuse their workers, and ignore their own poor and uneducated. The trade we get from them benefits very few in this country, and costs us a lot. It’s particularly hard to see christmas ornaments and American Flags made in China.

It's a part-time system

Menlo (Diary) Monday, April 19th at 1:32PM EST (link)

On average, people work fewer hours per week than those in any other developed country. This is the result of a system where employers are required to allow employees to choose to work fewer hours without reason. I’m sure many professionals would cut their pay and hours proportionally if given the choice. A lot of higher-paying professions (on an hourly basis) actually go overtime.

The oft quoted stat from the Great Depression, misses the point that Roosevelt had the investors intimidated. More to the point, After the British implemented the free-trade policies, rampant speculation started, followed by rabbit breeding theories, ending in massive crashes. The French, also coming to the game, implemented FT policies in the 1840′s, which worked fine at first, but created a large bubble that crashed. It brought on massive discontent, and a revolution in 1848. The Communists started their revolution work again, and only a strong reaction saved the continent (yes, they recognized communism in the French Revolution, pre-Marx). Marx was very inspired by the revolution of 1848.
In Ireland, the free-trade problem worked in reverse. During the potato famine, Ireland remained a net exporter of food. The ships were loaded under armed guard. England outbid Ireland, while the populace starved. That experience in Ireland has as much to do with our social services, and inability to slow the cost down, than the Great Depression.

I'll take the risk without hesitation.

As it is, I believe China is a greater threat to the US than any middle eastern nation; and only North Korea could top China as the world’s most cruel dictatorship (certainly more than Cuba). I think it would help the economy. Regardless of what it were to do to the economy here, it needs to be done.

As for the Netherlands, I don’t quite understand. I’m referring to laws governing work schedules.

I'm going to read the Atlantic article

Veronica (Diary) Saturday, May 1st at 9:25PM EST (link)

possibly comment later, but what I want to say is something my husband’s deduced.

Gotta give him credit, wish he were here.

I read an article in Policy Review – Oct/Nov 2009 issue, entitled Europe’s Real Demographic Challenge – which addressed the aging population.

It’s something we’re familiar with. Not enough young people or workers to support the aging populace, which is huge.

One solution to this problem, per the article, was to manipulate the immigrant population to help prop up the support of the aged.

“Manipulation” may not be the right word, I haven’t the article in front of me.

“Utlize” is better.

The point is — and this is where my husband comes in — the immigrant population here in America is becoming more valuable than the rest of us who are unemployed and a drain on the economy and the entitlement system.

I mean, let’s face it. We know they want votes. Poor people are great targets – look at Puerto Rico. But the State needs its income, otherwise THEY are going to get laid off. They need workers.

And most of us aren’t working. We’re a drain on the system.

They don’t like drains and useless people. Where did the concept of abortion come from? Who did they target?

So, yes. Immigrants come here to bust their asses. They work. They send their cash back to Mexico. It’s cold hard cash and our government wants it.

And in this political environment, the immigrant is becoming more valuable than the unemployed American who’s approaching his 99th week of unemployment.

This is beyond votes.

China won’t lend us money forever, and no matter what these goons in Washington tell you, it’s a shame-ed thing to have America’s economy hit rock bottom on your watch.

Yes, these guys want world-wide wealth redistribution and reparations to secure their futures as head hanchos. But there needs to be wealth to do it.

The “Shovel ready” population is just the right demographic to tap into.
