I have been watching iCasualties.Org daily for the past 5 weeks. This is not a morbid curiosity; I have done this because I noticed back then that June 2010 was the worst month for US casualties of any so far in the Afghanistan war…ANY point during the 9 years we’ve been fighting it.
I noticed, upon further investigation, that the numbers were on pace to be even worse in July (which they ultimately were) and that there was not one [expletive deleted in deference to the posting guidelines] mention of this anywhere in the major media outlets. I was angry, however unsurprised I might have been, but I determined that I would quietly watch…and “listen”… to the news to see if anyone else was paying attention over these past 5 short weeks. They were not.
Over 50 Soldiers have died since I started paying attention, and the only news story I’ve seen tells of the 7 Soldiers that died last weekend. A death here or 2 or 3 there don’t, apparently, qualify as news. Meanwhile, our metrosexual President (unable to talk to the American people or the families of our fallen heroes because he’s been just too busy riding his girl’s mountain bike adorned in that goofy looking helmet which keeps him safe on his harrowing ride along the treacherous streets of Martha’s Vineyard), seems completely indifferent to these numbers.
I wouldn’t want to talk to these families either, if I were him.
In 86 months the total number of casualties in Afghanistan was 630 under the Bush command. Under Obama’s weak, waffling, hand-wringing and navel-gazing command, in just 19 months, the US casualty count as of August 30, 2010 now surpasses Bush’s numbers, sitting now at a total of 632…and counting. How can this be?
We’ve had 4,763 strategy reviews. We’ve made kissy-face with our enemies. We’ve announced to them that we have a date-certain withdrawal plan if only they could just quiet themselves and wait us out. We’ve changed leadership on the ground, modified the ROE, incorporated the Rahm Emanuel-style approach to winning friends and influencing people there, and we’ve even begun indirect negotiations with our enemy to help facilitate their return to power once we tuck tail and run.
While our former President vacationed on his ranch, running chainsaws and wearing his man pants, he took time to visit Soldiers and the loved ones of the fallen wherever time allowed. He does so still. THIS President, beclowning himself at the Vineyard on our dime playing golf, either misunderstands his role as Commander-in-Chief during hostilities or he doesn’t care. George Bush, while winning (or trying to win) wars endured daily headlines about body counts. He endured countless calls for his resignation or, failing that, his impeachment. George Bush was a lot of things to a lot of people but he always cared about the Soldiers and their families…and he SHOWED it to them on a regular basis. He cared then, and he cares to this very day. Obama clearly does not.
The question now, with Obama’s complete lack of care or concern about the Soldiers or their families or their sacrifices, is when the calls will come from the left for his own resignation or his own impeachment. I’m fairly certain, like the chirping crickets in the headlines across America, I know the answer already.

skorrent1 (Diary) Monday, August 30th at 10:53PM EST (link)With your condemnation of POTUS (and MSM) indifference, let me make two points:
Increasing the fighting force in Afghanistan with the objective of driving the bad guys out of areas they have occupied will naturally result in more casualties on both sides.
AQI having been soundly trounced, but not eliminated, we should expect to see increased AQ activity in Yemen, Somolia and, by those who really want to take on the “Infidel-Crusader”, in Afghanistan.
We cannot expect the anti-war leftists to comprehend this, but it pays for us who understand the nature of the GWOT to keep it in mind.
I *get* your point skorrent but

These numbers are terrible and reprehensible…and not being reviewed by the press for LONG periods, well before Bambi’s surge.
I’ll grant you the last 3 months align with the latest strategy of “taking the fight” to the Taliban…but that doesn’t forgive the numbers before that activity began.
Mismanagement, lack of focus and priority…lack of experience or skill or leadership…lack of any genuine interest in even fighting this war to begin with…THESE are the things that put the loss of blood and treasure of America on this failed President’s hands.

"Lack of any genuine interest in even fighting this war
janis (Diary) Monday, August 30th at 11:15PM EST (link)to begin with…..” THAT, Dave, is the unforgivable point of these statistics. We have young men and women putting it all on the line with a CinC who cares more about his golf score and gettin’ him some shrimp in peace than he does about their sacrifice.
Just saw the news here in Tennessee, which, having Ft. Campbell, home of the 101st, so close by, was sickening. If I heard correctly, there have been 14 killed just from Ft. Campbell in August. During the Bush years, that kind of stat would have been hammered home every single day. Now? It’s mentioned offhand with an appropriately somber face. That’s it. No outrage, no condemnation from pandering politicians or prancing “activists.” Just…… nothing. No more importance than giving the toll over the last holiday weekend of deaths due to driving while drunk.
Our troops deserve so much more than this administration has mustered up in the way of courage, skill, intent, or determination. In all those areas, they get a -10 while our military deserves 100%. This is shameful and it is sickening. Thanks for writing this.
Interesting numbers!

In fact, the ROE seem designed to cause as many American casualties as possible. Our people “must show the courage of restraint” indeed! The moral cowards who devised this “strategy” deserve to burn in Hell. Taliban in Marjah were emptying their weapons at Marines, leaving them on the ground, standing up and laughing at the Marines as they walked away. They knew the Marines were forbidden to shoot at anyone not actually firing at them at the time. We couldn’t defeat Bermuda with these idiotic suicidal policies.

Fighting terrorism? They can’t make up their minds Military Tribunal or Civilian Court…..we know they are enemy combatants and Tribunals are the correct path but what does this administration give us? Nothing….nothing at all. As a matter of fact the the Military case against the USS Cole bombers has been “shelved” for now AND the Federal case against the 9-11 plotters is stalled…..It’s like Obama and his administration aren’t even on the USA’s side.

Fighting for who's future?
tex41lb Tuesday, August 31st at 11:18AM EST (link)Have we sunk so low one’s perception of Obama can only believe the worst?
I am conflicted. Part of me, the greater part, leads me to think no President of The United States Of America could idly ignore the level of bloodshed being expended on his watch.
Then I recall Vietnam. A war more of politics than policy, a war of chessmen moving their alternative stooges on a giant chessboard while sitting in a safe secure bunker in the basement of the Whitehouse. Quite content to milk blood for power.
The other part of me, deep inside where I always end up when weighing good against wrong, believes this man Obama to be evil.
And for his political gain we as a country are doing Vietnam all over again. A once noble cause and worthy goal of elimination of Al Qaeda has been perverted. The only difference this time is the current person in power sees a benefit nearer to hand and much clearer in use for the furtherance of his personal needs. The timed, but not timely, withdrawal from Afghanistan is being set, not to help him gain reelection in 2014, but to leave him a man in the eyes of the world, especially the Muslim world, worthy of their support when he seeks leadership of the United Nations after he leaves office.
Obama is a megalomaniac with unlimited vision of himself as a great leader. His filter for viewing the future is not overly loaded with reality. He know’s he is the answer to humanities need for a One, a transformative leader to secure a one world government. Maybe Soro’s has bought the future.
My son served in Dessert Storm.
I have a brother who served two years in Vietnam.
They went with my blessing and support.
I have come to the conclusion I do not want your son, brother or friend to have to serve in an Afghanistan war where there is no all out commitment to win.
It is too painful to endure another war of attrition due to politics. If the war has merit than it merits being won.
Well said tex41lb

Dave Poff (haystack) (Diary) Monday, August 30th at 11:28PM EST (link)that your reading comprehension would lead you to suggest I am using dead Soldiers to score points against a politician.
When you read the links, do the math, see that the casualty rates of Obama’s (the President that ran on how to get OUT of a war he didn’t agree with) are far worse than his predecessor who fought to WIN the war…the one he always believed was just…and then come back and share with us where the logic is flawed, then I will take you seriously.
Unless, of course, you don’t want to see that Obama is NOT a politician, but rather that he is the guy giving the orders that sends these men and women to their deaths for a cause he doesn’t consider just…in which case you can just move along to some other place that celebrates these losses and insists that this President be supported despite his failures to lead.
I look forward to your next response which, I’m quite sure, will help us all see where my logic is flawed.

Sigh...
HOOS30 Tuesday, August 31st at 12:06AM EST (link)You’re conflating rising casuality rates with President Obama riding a bike and you expect a sane person to argue with that? Perhaps if the nearly 200K troops we sent to an unnecessary war in Iraq had been deployed to Afghanistan instead that area would be a little more stable today, no? How many of our men and women died needlessly in Iraq and how much stronger is the AfPakTaliban since they had seven years to retrench and perfect the roadside bomb?
But President Bush “wears man pants” on his fake ranch (which he and Laura hauled ass from and moved back to Dallas when he didn’t the stage prop anymore), so that’s okay in your eyes, I guess?
Your post is crass, no matter how much you claim to “love our troops”.
Oh, jinkies, HOOS30, let me guess:
janis (Diary) Tuesday, August 31st at 12:22AM EST (link)You’re one of those who thought that it was perfectly fine to leave a murderous thug like Saddam Hussein in power to torture, murder and rape his citizens at will. No? Then just how DO you defend your notion that Iraq was “an unnecessary war”? By saying that there were no weapons of mass destruction, no doubt. Well the jury is still out on just what was there and where it might have ended up. Beyond that, as I’m sure you’ve been told before, every country in the world with a lick of sense thought that Saddam had the weapons and would use them.
But no matter. You wouldn’t care one way or the other why we fought that war. And you’d have been perfectly content if we had lost it miserably. When George W. Bush left office, the peace there was well under way. Thanks to President Sparky, it remains to be seen if that will hold.
As to President Bush and his wife, the ever gracious Laura, they didn’t need to escape to the ranch once he left office. He was finally out of the daily whipping that the sad excuse for a media administered in the service of their liberal overlords.
Well, hoos, you've got a couple problems here
Dave Poff (haystack) (Diary) Tuesday, August 31st at 12:41AM EST (link)It’s not conflating when Obama vacations on a mountain bike and atop the back nine while soldiers he sent to battle with his surge are dying as he trollops through the Vineyard on yet another vacation. We are in a crisis in Afghanistan, as you suggest, and he should be working the issue…not vacationing from it. You and yours expected Bush to do so, and to give Obama a pass on vacationing while his surge has yet to take hold is nothing short of a joke.
Bush still owns the ranch, so move on. Dallas is where the library is located, and he is doing what Prez retirees do…and Bambi will be doing in 2013..,pimping himself and his memoirs and selling books and whoring for donations to complete the project.
The rest of your claptrap has been tried and failed here on countless occasions. You say unnecessary, I say we won until democrats used the Supplemental process to implicitly defund the effort.. You say Afghanistan would be more stable today with the Iraqi Freedom soldiers, and I say Afghanistan was won with far less…until you and yours started waffling on finishing the job,
Your presence here is no longer welcome, and your banning from the site is imminent. Before you go, I suggest you consider the one thing you and Obama and everyone else on the left keeps trying to pretend isn’t true:
This is YOUR country now…YOU control it. Your Messiah has ascended to the Oval office. YOU own Afghanistan. You own Iraq. YOU are responsible for the economy, the poor, the unemployed, and the hungry. YOU send your President off to the Vineyard because he needs to relax and unwind, and WE send our sons and daughters to fight and die in a war you never believed in, never wanted to fight, and don’t want to see through to victory, choosing instead to see it through to evacuation and retreat. This is your war, and these are YOUR deaths; we could just as easily have left in Jan. ’09…that we didn’t means you own this.
Now, own up to it, take the blame for the failed surge strategy and the casualties…and the flag draped coffins and the deaths and maimings derived from your new war plan…and shut the hell up.

Every “milestone” would be mentioned numerous times, and then you’d also have each Democratic member robotically stating exactly how many from their state or district had died while in effect campaigning for Obama from the floor of the chamber. Ausonius (Diary) Tuesday, August 31st at 7:27AM EST (link)You can find the bias in their own videotapes: if you could stand watching them, the Big 3 News at 6:30 back in W. Bush days would ALWAYS lead with the anchor’s tragic and disgusted voice saying: “TWO MORE AMERICAN SOLDIERS HAVE DIED TODAY IN IRAQ, BRINGING THE TOTAL TO…”
And behind the fake tragedy and the fake disgust was an absolute glee that Iraq would bring down W. Bush and the Republicans, even though Dems had trumpeted and beat their breasts for a removal of Saddam as much as anyone else.
Iraq is now a success…because MAObama is president and is withdraweing the troops. And how much mention was there that 14 Iraqi cities were bombed last Wednesday in co-ordinated attacks, apparently as an in-your-face response to MAObama’s withdrawal of our troops?
The Wall Street Journal ran an article on the weekend about how it took 3 decades for South Korea to establish a stable democracy after the truce. America needs to be reminded about this, especially given the lack of proper History teaching in the schools.

My heart aches for the families who are getting those devastating visits from Soldiers and Marines in uniform today. They do not deserve the additional pain of knowing their children died serving under a Commander-in-Chief who cares nothing for their sacrifice.
We have the power to put a stop to this dictatorship. And we will.

Why... Think about it.
budparker Tuesday, August 31st at 9:01PM EST (link)One question we must ask is “Why?” Why are we there? Fighting terrorists we made in previous decades to fight the Soviets? Or, could it be Oil? There are undeveloped oilfields in 4 of the “Stan” nations; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. But they are landlocked by Russia, China, Afghanistan, Iran. How do they get the precious oil to the Persian Gulf? A pipeline through Afghanistan and Pakistan is the likely answer. Our involvement in these never-ending “Police Actions” always involves money. Usually trade route and/or resources to be collected. In a true War there is a victor who occupies a completely crushed enemy. When was the last time that happened? 1945?
