I don’t want to mock too indiscriminately here…God knows how badly I would like to see a jobs bill that would foster a genuine hiring environment and help drag us out of the depression-like environment we’ve suffered with for so long, but really?:
It’s a bipartisan jobs bill that would hand President Barack Obama a badly needed political victory and placate Republicans with tax cuts at the same time. But it has a problem: It won’t create many jobs.
Even the Obama administration acknowledges the legislation’s centerpiece — a tax cut for businesses that hire unemployed workers — would work only on the margins.
As for the bill’s effectiveness, tax experts and business leaders said companies are unlikely to hire workers just to receive a tax break. Before businesses start hiring, they need increased demand for their products, more work for their employees and more revenue to pay those workers.
“We’re skeptical that it’s going to be a big job creator,” said Bill Rys, tax counsel for the National Federation of Independent Business. “There’s certainly nothing wrong with giving a tax break to a business that’s hired a new worker, especially in these tough times. But in terms of being an incentive to hire a lot of workers, we’re skeptical.”
We really are suffering a chicken and egg conundrum here. On the one hand we want to give businesses a reason to hire. A tax incentive (even though it’s just a left-handed unemployment benefit in many ways) is always nice to see if you’re a small business looking to gain market entry or deepen market share, but after all-you need to have the actual demand for your products before you’re going to need an expanded staff to get your widget out into the marketplace.
Problem is, Obama and his merry men don’t get that the Federal Government is NOT the answer to all problems. Uncle Sam cannot create demand…though they could certainly create an environment that might foster it…and the more interventionalism they try, the more they actually drive the market away from taking any risks. This plan, while well-intentioned, only succeeds in putting the cart before the horse:
Rys, of the National Federation of Independent Business, said the credit could speed hiring once employers need more workers. But, he said, NFIB members aren’t seeing many signs of improvement.
“Right now, business owners just don’t have customers,” Rys said. “Until you have work for the employee to do, there’s really less of a reason to hire a new worker.”
“If you hire them, they will come” is not a real strong position for the Feds here, I’m afraid.
So, guys on the Hill…are you looking at the deficit-both fiscal and trade-and the national debt? Looking at backing off a bit from micromanaging the Auto, Insurance, Finance, and Investment industries? That come up yet? How about loosening up some of the regulations out there that stand in the way of small investment and risk-taking on the part of the small to medium-sized companies with employees under 1,000?
EPA, ethanol, emissions standards…health care, stimulus, cap and trade, oil and gas exploration moratoriums, and letting Bush tax cuts expire…these things ring a bell?

streiff (Diary) Wednesday, February 10th at 8:48PM EST (link)the Targeted Jobs Tax Credit enacted in 1978. The same problems exist. When the jobs are created by a government tax credits you inevitably find that those jobs disappear with the tax credit or other jobs disappear to make room for the job bearing the tax credit.
The only government action that creates private sector jobs is creating an environment where business feels comfortable that hiring people makes sense.

Progressives do not understand how business works
d_lamar Wednesday, February 10th at 8:54PM EST (link)I agree with Haystack.
It’s evident that the Progressives/ socialists now in control do not have a clue how business decisions are made. Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and the rest have never held a real job, met a payroll, or had to make any market based decisions that affect a real business.
They think that by giving business a little incentive to hire an employee, therefore they will.
They do not understand that the Progressives have created an anti-business climate which scares the hell out of most business owners. The possibility of higher taxes, more regulations, mandated healthcare for employees, higher energy expenses from cap and trade, card check, etc. does not give small business any confidence that they can do business without costly government caused overhead.
The only good thing to come out of all of this is that it makes it easy for conservatives to campaign on market based principles this fall.
Still trying to buy his way out.

Oh, good grief
RedBeard Wednesday, February 10th at 9:21PM EST (link)“…companies are unlikely to hire workers just to receive a tax break…”
Would it be terribly trite for me to just sat “DUH!” here? It doesn’t take tax experts and “business leaders” (whoever they are) to make a pronouncement like that. Anybody who has ever had to meet a payroll knows that. Of course, that leaves out pretty much the entire collection of non-productive elitists in the Obama administration.
I’m not sure whether to laugh, cry, or start slapping people silly when ignorant administration fools with no business experience whatever start telling me how it should be done.
Making decisions by flipping a coin would result in far more successful policies than those emanating from the moronic convergence that is the Obama administration.

antisocial (Diary) Wednesday, February 10th at 11:56PM EST (link)If the President had to ever make payroll he won’t behave like this. You can not manufacture demand. You can not get somebody to hire to get tax credits when he/she can do without a new hire.
This is stupid. Or this is malicious.

It’s bad enough having a dogmatic ultra-leftist in the White House, but add in his stupidity and willful ignorance, and we have a perfect storm.
Obama is not qualified to tell anyone else how to do anything more complex than handing out leftie leaflets on a street corner.

tngal (Diary) Wednesday, February 10th at 10:00PM EST (link)Geez, is this the only attack this guys knows? His weatherization program bill that he signed earmarked billions to weatherize low income homes. It was designed to save money and provide jobs., At the time I thought, ” How the heck many people does it take to caulk a window for crying out loud? How many hundreds of thousands of jobs will we replace?”
I understand what the guy is trying to do here. He tries to score points on two fronts..one with the green crowd and one with the jobs crowd. Now with this program he hopes to gain accolades with the small businesses as well as with the job crowd. They’re two-fers. Pushing one initiative to fix several problems at once. Its not working!!

Jobs are a result of private sector economic activity
GregInFla (Diary) Wednesday, February 10th at 10:21PM EST (link)And as such, the government should be saying “What can we do to foster growth in the private sector?” Threatening them with unwanted unions (card check), causing “necessarily skyrocketing” (Obama’s words) energy prices due to cap’n trade system, and restricting private sector borrowing by (1) borrowing so much money yourself (fed govt) that there is little left and (2) keeping interest rates so artificially low that there is less urgency to lend money, will not stimulate private sector economic activity.
Lowering taxes, keeping the rules constant, and removing unneeded regulations are all actions that would help. It is the private sector that funds the public sector in a free-market economy, so making it stronger is the best thing the public sector can do.
