Will Nagin Do His Job This Time?

Or is New Orleans headed for another disaster?

Is this what Nagin has in store for New Orleans, AGAIN?

It was just 3 years ago that America (not just New Orleans) was devastated by hurricane Katrina. Can we PLEASE remember how the Mayor of New Orleans handled himself during that crisis? Please recall the screaming and railing from the still-Mayor of New Orleans:

I need reinforcements, I need troops, man. I need 500 buses, man. We ain’t talking about — you know, one of the briefings we had, they were talking about getting public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out here.

I’m like, “You got to be kidding me. This is a national disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans.”

That’s — they’re thinking small, man. And this is a major, major, major deal. And I can’t emphasize it enough, man. This is crazy.

I’ve got 15,000 to 20,000 people over at the convention center. It’s bursting at the seams. The poor people in Plaquemines Parish. … We don’t have anything, and we’re sharing with our brothers in Plaquemines Parish.

It’s awful down here, man.

Mayor Nagin played a great game of making everything that went wrong with Katrina everyone else’s fault but his own. And, lest some of you were hiding under a rock, let us also remember that the storm was alleged to have been made by President Bush himself, because he’s a racist you know, and America hates Black people. Katrina made deep cuts in this country that STILL haven’t sufficiently healed, and we lie in wait for yet another hurricane of potentially epic proportions to make landfall somewhere near the Big Easy.

Despite Nagin and then-Governor Blanco calling for a state of emergency and despite calling for evacuations, and despite assuring the world they were ready to provide shelter to those choosing NOT to leave, Katrina destroyed New Orleans and broke the backs of millions of Americans. With the grim reality of hurricane Gustav bearing down on New Orleans, and the Mayor once again calling for evacuations ahead of the storm, it’s deja vu all over again…and one can’t help but wonder whether Nagin learned any lessons from his direct responsibility for the loss of thousands of lives.

Will his having had to live with his miserable failures 3 years ago cause him to get it right this time? Does he have his head in the game this time? Will he take CARE of his people and protect and serve them NOW as opposed to what he did to them 3 years ago?

That he’s calling Gustav the storm of the century…while STILL unable to adequately provide shelter for those choosing NOT to evacuate makes me fear the worst for the people in New Orleans.

There can’t be too many prayers for their safety and well-being as Gustav approaches.

Looks like he learns something

The quote I heard this morning was “If you…chose to stay, you will be on your own“.

That’s what he should have told people last time, instead of making them think that the gub-mint would be taking care of them.

Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.

This shouldn't be about partisanship, but the Dems make it that way...

Having both friends and co-workers in N.O., I certainly hope he is taking the steps necessary beyond simply visible P.R. on the TV. Here’s his chance to shine. I’ve already heard Jindhal on the news and he instills confidence. I’m still wary about Nagin, but will give him the benefit of the doubt. This will be his last chance and if he screws it up, he’s toast. I don’t like him, but for the sake of the people of N.O. that cannot (stress – CANNOT, not WILL NOT) easily take care of themselves, I pray he gets it right this time!

I’ll give the kudos he deserves if Nagin pulls it off. He’s still an idiot, however (in my opinion and that of friends I have that are business leaders and democrats – go figure that one, I still don’t get that oxymoron). But in a situation like this, we need to give him all the encouragement we can (unlike many of the liberals that have cut W off at the knees every step they could).

What eats me up is how we hear of people like Michael Moore and that dimwit former DNC chairman on the plane reveling in the timing of the hurricane. Instead of getting their butts down to the coast to be ready and help, they sit around to see if the administration or Republicans screw up. Yep, sticking up for the little guy.

Forget Nagin... Jindal is in command

Whether or not Nagin has learned his lesson is inconsequential. Governor Jindal is on the ground directly overseeing the evacuation effort in New Orleans. While I don’t want to come off as too overconfident, I still feel that Jindal is going to deliver for the people of Lousiana in this time of crisis.

Amen Brother!

Competency

SteveLA (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 12:48PM EST (link)

Jindal is one heck of a competent Governor and is on top of the emergency. Nagan will ether get with the program or run over.

The Cajun grandma was way over her head during Katrina. Think the Donks will notice competency when you have qualified people running things…somehow I doubt it.

It is obvious that Governor Jindal is very competent and in charge of the situation. He is being very smart by allowing Mayor Nagin to step out front and save his dignity. Plus, Nagin has got to feel Jindal breathing on the back of his neck. Nagin knows if he screws up this time he won’t get elected again. He tried with some success to palm the blame off on Bush and the Feds with Katrina. He won’t be able to make the blame stick anywhere else this time except on himself.

Bush and the evil republican governor. You have to understand who his constituents are and what their level of political sophistication is.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Nagin’s caceer if he screws up again now that Jindal is in charge.

I bet more people heed the warnings to leave this time

For one thing, there are a lot fewer people who still live in New Orleans to begin with than there were when Katrina hit.

Government is evil.

It’s a necessary evil, but it is an evil. Any application of government should be done in a somber fashion, as it is a failure of our humanity that we couldn’t handle it as individual citizens. Deciding whether to apply government to solve a problem should be considered on the same level as burning down an orphanage full of children to solve a problem. Deciding to tax should be thought of like deciding to stab an innocent man for our own gain. Anyone who celebrates government is a ghoulish wretch who must be ostracized from polite society.

Bush is incompetent in the realm of public affairs

Jindal is no such thing.

You can already see Jindal taking the steps to make sure that if anything goes wrong, it can’t be blamed on him.
I imagine he’s just Waiting for Nagin to screw up.

Jindal will speak before Nagin ever gets a chance.
