The Case for Mike Castle
There is a case for Republicans in Delaware to support career liberal politician Mike Castle in the upcoming Republican senate primary. It is a weak and cynical case, and it denies the political realities of 2010. But nevertheless, there is a case. What, you might ask, could induce a conservative who believes in The First Amendment to vote for a politician who co-sponsored the recently passed “Disclose Act,” an act designed to stifle free speech and gag opposition to establishment politicians? What would cause a Second Amendment supporter to vote for a politician who has earned an F- grade from The NRA? And how could an advocate for life pull the lever for a pro-abortion candidate? There must be a compelling reason for “free enterprise believing” Republicans to be asked to support a man who supported TARP, “Cash for Clunkers,” “Cap and Trade” and the auto industry and bank takeovers. Those who oppose socialized medicine would need to have a strong motivation to support a candidate opposed to the repeal of Obama-care. What is the case for Castle? It comes down to this. Castle campaign workers and old guard GOP operatives, supported by corporate money, are parroting a single talking point. It is that Mike Castle can supposedly win, giving the Republicans a senate pickup, and his opponent, Christine O’Donnell, supposedly cannot.
Besides the fact that this argument is cynical if not immoral, it is patently fallacious.
Paid Castle internet operatives will point out that Delaware is a blue state and only a moderate Republican can prevail. Ignoring the fact that Mark Levin recently said of Castle that he “is not a moderate, he is a radical liberal.” They fail to acknowledge the fact that the socialist nightmare, made possible by the likes of Mike Castle, has completely shuffled the political deck. The solid blue liberal State of New Jersey elected a committed and outspoken conservative Republican as governor this year. And this year there could be no weaker candidate for Democrat Chris Coons to face in November than Mike Castle. He has been a career politician for the past forty years. During that time he has never met a tax hike that he did not like. In 2010 even worthy incumbents are at risk. Mike Castle is politically dead. He just does not know it yet. The surest way to miss a chance for a senate pickup is for DE Republicans to nominate this liberal fossil. Voters of all parties will justifiably hold him accountable for all that has gone wrong in America.
Fortunately, there is a fantastic conservative alternative. For those who learned the lessons of 2006 and 2008, and more importantly, of 1980, 1984 and 1994, the choice is clear. Support Christine O’Donnell and send her some money if you can. The liberal Castle campaign has all the money that stagnant incumbency can provide. The only problem with that is that their currency has been debased this year by their own contemptible actions.

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Monday, June 28th at 7:31PM EST (link)you had me at that title though, I was coming in to CRUSH YOU! but I sit here thinking you are quite brilliant (don’t expect the Corrupt Media to run with that though).
Christine is unabashedly Conservative and she is exactly what is needed in Delaware. I don’t care what anyone else says I KNOW that Americans in EVERY State are ready for real and quantifiable CHANGE!

As usual, make up your own mind.
They say Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the poor.
If they need more voters,
then they have to make more of who they are for.
We are there in the various Tea Party groups, leaderless, but not rudderless.

Details of truth
aravis Monday, June 28th at 9:04PM EST (link)Thanks for sharing some details of truth. Perhaps, with more people spending the time to get to know the details of Christine’s platform, we will all be able to make a rational vote – for her!
You tricked me

Geat job with the article…I proudly donated to her on Sunday. She has more of a chance than many folks give her credit for, we just need to get behind her and help the cause.

Christine O'Donnell is the only one who can win.
Loren Heal (Diary) Tuesday, June 29th at 5:34AM EST (link)Castle can’t win. He’ll lose to the real Democrat.

jeffreywturner (Diary) Tuesday, June 29th at 9:21AM EST (link)Has Castle given us an inkling as to whether he will support originalist judges for the SCOTUS when our new Republican President starts appointing them in 2 years?
If so, then he will be of at least some use to us in the Senate. Otherwise he is just a Chafee and there is NO benefit of him having an R after his name.
“Life is too short, can’t we all just eat pork and kill some terrorists?”
Castle more likely than Christine
Change Jar Conservative (Diary) Tuesday, June 29th at 1:43PM EST (link)I had hoped for sanity but found windmills instead which is fine.
For those who haven’t stumbled upon me at redstate in the last X years, I believe fairly simply in:
“As conservative as possible.”
Give me Paul and Lee … please primary Chambliss and Issacson, but forget DeVore and forget Christine.
She is wonderful and if you want to spend your time and money on her then fine. Feel free.
But don’t expect her to win.
For all of the appeal to New Jersey, Christie was panned on the front page of redstate as being the wrong choice and wasn’t it too bad that we didn’t pick the conservative so please check your facts on that.
Castle buys us exactly one thing — another vote in the Senate.
Is it a reliable vote?
Nope.
Is he certain to stay in the party?
Nope.
Does he have an actual chance to win?
Well he’s plus 23 in the GENERAL so I’d say so.
If I were king, would I pick Christine? Sure … a hundred times out of a hundred.
Scott Brown isn’t conservative either, but he’s a heck of a lot better than Kennedy and Castle will be as well. As good as Brown, no but he’s better than Coons or Biden that’s for sure.
This isn’t Florida that is purple, it is a blue state.
Do you have any DATA that says Christine can win the general?
If so, I’d gladly join you, but if not, I’d rather have Castle’s leadership vote and occassional support for the new President that we put up in 2012.

Bryan McCarthy (Diary) Wednesday, June 30th at 8:56AM EST (link)The major polling organizations have not yet polled Christine vs. Chris Coons, the democrat. I know this state pretty well, and I worked for about ten years at the committee level with The GOP. Both parties are corrupt to the core in a way that is only possible in a small state. Chris Coons has been close to a few scandals here and Christine would be able to paint him as the “political insider.” On the other hand, Castle IS the penultimate Washington insider and Coons can simply, and hypocritically, point to his record in the way that Joe Sestak did to Specter in PA. If Christine wins. There will be a huge national focus on this race. It is, after all, the former seat of the sitting VP. She will get a huge uplift when that happens. In any case I can tell you this. I am close to the action here, and I firmly believe she will knock out Castle in September. This is a closed primary. Republicans here have been betrayed by Mike Castle for FORTY YEARS. They are pissed and don’t give a rat’s a– about “control of the senate.” After actively supporting “republican” candidates” since 1976, I no longer do either. In my view, if Castle became the one that gave Republican’s control of the senate it would be worse than not having control at all. He would give Obama the cover he needs to claim that his policies are “bi partisan.” It would actually improve Obama’s odds in 2012.
I hope you will reconsider this. In any case there are many conservatives here who have never been politically active before. The “lesser of two evils” argument only energizes them further. Watch what happens here.
Are you serious?
rightwingdelaware Thursday, July 1st at 1:05PM EST (link)“Paid Castle internet operatives will point out that Delaware is a blue state and only a moderate Republican can prevail.”
I am not paid, in any way, shape or form by the Republican Party, Mike Castle, or any campaign in Delaware, nor am I a volunteer for any campaign. The reason I come onto out of state sites like this is to inform people about the truth when it comes to Christine O’Donnell, the truth that O’Donnell is hiding from every day in her own state.
No where, does anyone on this site tackle the reasons why O’Donnell is unelectable in Delaware: the trail of unpaid, disgruntled campaign workers, lying about being a college graduate in 2006 & 2008, suing the only company in Delaware that ever gave her a job for discrimination, living off of campaign donations, hiding her foreclosure so she could run against Biden, and her continued refusal to do something as simple as tell anyone the name of her “PR firm” or answer questions about the huge gaps in her resume.
But then, these are questions O’Donnell refuses to answer, other than calling the documented facts presented by the News Journal, the only statewide newspaper in Delaware, “slander.” Yes, court judgements are “slander” in O’Donnell’s world, and by her definition, she’s been “slandered” quite a bit.
But I guess being cute and pretending to be a fiscal conservative is enough for some people, even though her own life is a long sordid story of fiscal irresponsibility and having other people (like her boyfriend), bail her out of her problems. Well, it’s not enough for me.
As for Castle, he voted against Obamacare, and he’s been against nationalized healthcare for the 18 years he’s been in Congress, he also voted FOR the Bush Tax Cuts, and extending the Bush Tax Cuts. He’s against the estate tax. He voted against the Stimulus. And by voting for TARP, legislation that split the GOP, he voted for the best interests of Delaware, a state with MORE banking employees than Republican Primary voters.
His 40 years of public service included being a DA, the Lt. Governor, and the Governor of Delaware, all positions he earned and excelled in. His time at the state level was a time of prosperity and low unemployment. He helped bring the banking industry to Delaware by lowering taxes and creating a pro business environment. During the majority of his years working at the state level, he also worked as a lawyer, and started a successful law firm. He worked two jobs for many years, while his opponent won’t work at all because then, as she was quoted as saying, she wouldn’t be able to live off of campaign donations.
My motivation is pure and simple. The last place in the world Christine O’Donnell should be, is representing Delaware in the US Senate. I don’t have to be “paid” to post on blogs, it’s worth it to me to just sit back and watch her supporters deflect from her downfalls, and try to distort Castle’s record instead. But then that’s all that O’Donnell and her supporters have, besides empty rhetoric, because she hasn’t had an accomplishment to tout since 2004 that didn’t involved losing a campaign.
