Why I Will Continue to Support Perry

By the time you are reading this, people in all 57 states, civilians and corpsemen alike, will know that Perry had a horrible gaffe at tonight’s debate because he forgot his third department to cut.  This will overshadow what was otherwise a solid debate by him (I know, I know, “Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?”)

Despite his gaffe, I still support Rick Perry.  Going into tonight’s debate, Perry was the only candidate who I felt had a great combination of strong executive experience and a record of fighting Washington and advancing conservative causes.  Coming out of tonight’s debate, Perry is still the only candidate who has a great combination of strong executive experience and a record of fighting Washington and advancing conservative causes.  And he will still have a strong record of conservative leadership after he finishes his waffle.

Rick Perry may not know off the top of his head which three departments he would like to cut, but he does know how to cut spending.  Under Perry for the first time since World War II, Texas cut its budget, (take that W.), not by growing the budget less than proposed, but by actually spending less than it did in the previous budget.  Every budget that Rick Perry signed was a balanced budget.  We need someone with a strong record of fiscal responsibility to right the ship, when even the Republicans in Washington are willing to sell us out to the SuperCommittee by raising taxes now for the promise of future cuts that never come.

Rick Perry may not know how to develop debate points, but he knows how to develop a pro-business environment.  The thing that this country needs most can be summed up in three letters: J-O-B-S.  Texas has created one million net jobs during his tenure in Texas, during that same time, the country as a whole lost 2.5 million net jobs.   Texas added four seats in the latest census because of the number of people moving to Texas in order to find work.  Indeed, CNBC named Texas it’s number one state for business in 2010.  And just like when the stock market crashed and Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television to explain what happened, Rick Perry will explain how overregulation and overtaxation are killing employment in America.

Rick Perry may fight against words, but he also fights against Washington.  Texas has fought against overregulation by the EPA; the Department of Education; State Department, and The Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services, just to name a few.

Rick Perry is not a good debater.  Rick Perry is a good leader and a solid conservative.  If we can’t have all three in a candidate, I would rather have the guy who knows how to put conservative policies into action and show that they can work through example, rather than a candidate who can explain why conservative policies are great on paper, but never plans to implement them.  Showing that your policies work in practice and not just on paper, translates to any language: including Texan and Austrian, or anywhere else your trip on the Intercontinental Railroad will take you.

Can Perry best Obama in a debate?  I don’t know.  What I do know is that people are seeing that Obama’s policies don’t work, and that even Perry can show that his do.  People understand that.  What I also know is that when consevative policies are implemented and get the economy growing again, people aren’t going to remember what was said in some debate.

I will gladly pass over Rick Perry the next time I need to pick a debate partner.  I will gladly continue to support Rick Perry the next time I need to choose a president.

My wife left the room after the first 15 minutes of the Mitt Romney Show. Her parting shot was “I’m voting for Rick Perry and I don’t care about these debates.” I watched, but I also don’t care. Perry is the only candidate with the experience and the will to actually change the federal government.

Don’t you think a man intent on eliminating three cabinet-level departments should be able to explain his reasoning a bit, or at least remember which departments he is cutting? Do you think Perry understands the national defense responsibilities of the Energy Department?

Do you? Why don't you explain them to us?

And at the same time, explain how the Conattution authorizes such a department.

How low are your standards? The guy is talking about gutting three cabinet-level departments, including the one in charge of nuclear weapons research, and you aren’t even the slightest bit concerned by his repeatedly demonstrated lack of depth? At least Huntsman and Romney really understand the issues.

And really. Do you? that’s your response? There are a ton of things I don’t know that I would expect a candidate for president to understand.

If it was his intent then yes.

ghostship Thursday, November 10th at 8:58PM EST (link)

However, lets be honest here. Perry has zero intention of trying to do any such thing and everybody but the most die hard Perry supporter knows it.

There is no way Perry doesn't know "energy"

tricianc (Diary) Friday, November 11th at 11:24PM EST (link)

I can’ t explan what happened other than he went blank or lost his train of thought. It happens to all of us.

Perry has been going around for months talking about and stating the 3 Depts he would be eliminating. there is no way i believe he doesn’t know nor do I believe that he wouldn’t eliminate at LEAST 3 Depts.

He’s also been touting his Energy plan, his jobs plan and his tax plan which entail cuts in spending and elimination of departyment. Not to mention Perry lives energy. It’s one of the biggest industries and economic booms of the world’s 15th largest economy which Perry manages and quite successfully.

Watch Ron Paul which is what Perry was doing

lizzie Saturday, November 12th at 2:27AM EST (link)

The second time I watched was when the clip was the news, and then I watched a third time, focussed on Ron Paul because Perry, for some reason, chose to look directly at Paul. As Perry paused, Paul said ‘five’ and put his five fingered hand out towards Perry. Then Paul made a gargoyle grimace as he faced the audience with his five-fingered hand palm out.

I thought I was seeing a gargoyle from a horror movie!

So, my theory is that Gov. Perry, being mortal, was frozen into stone at the sight of Ron Paul’s change in expression. And then Romney pitched EPA to further throw Perry off balance which he handled well enough. Then Harwood would not allow the candidates to have their joint laugh, and pushed Perry again.

Of course, no excuse for not being able to do what Romney does so well: talk really fast about nothing.

The real problem is that Perry got smacked down for embracing Coburn’s ‘Back in Black’ which does not eliminate cabinet departments, but streamlines/eliminates duplication, something Perry has done in Texas.

So, he went the traditional GOP route to eliminate, and decided to challenge Ron Paul, who had already named five (Ed, Energy, Commerce, HUD, and Interior)

Truly ironic that Perry is getting the most sympathetic coverage from the left-wing UK Guardian.

ABC is being the most balanced of US msm.

GOP is quite a minefield. Tom Coburn became a heretic for ‘Back in Black’ by the Norquistian/DeMint acolytes.

it is what it is. Americans love come-from-behind-against all-odds in sports – Perry just has to keep workin’ on it.

The Peoples Republic of Perry

jhobbes Thursday, November 10th at 9:25PM EST (link)

Perry has talked about secession. Now would be the optimum moment.

Perry is polling between 4%-6% among likely Republican voters across the board at statewide and nationwide polls listed at Real Clear Politics.com.
But polls conducted among the population of illegal aliens in Texas show him with a 99% approval rating. This is how to make lemonade out of lemons.

Like Sam Houston in an earlier century, Rick Perry should establish the borderlands along either side of the Rio Grande as a new and independent country. Perryland! Its the perfect solution. He gets to be president, he can drill the heck out of the river basin and all twenty million illegal aliens can move to Perryland where they can finally come out of the shadows, get drivers licenses, obtain a pathway to Perryland citizenship and have guranteed free tuition for their extended families from every corner of the planet.

There’ll still be room in Perryland for those legal US citizens who will never be able to bring themselves to vote for Mitt Romney. Perry has said he’ll build a Trans Perry Hiway to make it easy for disgruntled Red Staters to move to his new worker’s paradise along the Rio Grande.

And not to worry. He’ll never build a fence.

Recipies, anyone?

nathanalbright (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 9:30PM EST (link)

I think this troll needs a good Texas cooking recipe? Do we have any suggestions from the mods?

Perry's already built the fences where feasible unless you think that maybe in the middle of the Rio is a good idea?

avagreen Friday, November 11th at 8:22PM EST (link)

Or, in the ravines of the Big Bend Nat’l Park?
A fence has been built wherever possible, with boots on the ground to enforce it.

The TTC
was an idea to improve rural roads and highways without Texans paying for it or relying on federal funds…Deal was shotdown during the study phase & never went into effect. Ranchers raised hell. It was tied to other ideas for development from NAFTA like the Inland Port development idea…again never went into effect.

Here are the facts that were facing Governor Perry: Texas’ population is estimated to almost double by 2040 (growing by about 1,200 people a day right now). We’ll be approaching 44 to 45 million people by then. That’s not so far away. The TTC was an ambitious attempt to create a state-of-the-art, coordinated system of thousands of miles of roadways, rail lines, and gas transportation systems without raising taxes.
What were his options?

The options were: 1) do nothing, and the state becomes so congested, the air quality gets impacted so negatively in those metropolitan areas along I-35 that you stifle economic growth. Nothing is not an acceptable alternative.

Or, 2) we could raise the gas tax by about $1/gal. Not feasible.

3) Wait for Washington to fund it?

Finally, the last option was to use a Public/Private Partnership (P3) such that the private sector would build the infrastructure, and then recoup their investment via a user fee, i.e. tolls. It is important to note that P3s are a financing option, not a revenue source.

Examples of the same kind of action: the Chicago Skyway, the South Bay Expressway in California, and the Capital Beltway high-occupancy toll lanes in DC.

I-35 would have remained in place for those people who chose not to pay the toll. No “free” highways would have been converted to toll roads.

Some people are confused … they use the term “freeways.” There is no such thing as a freeway, no such thing as a free highway. There are only tax-funded roads and toll-funded roads.

Nevertheless, the TTC is now dead in Texas. It cannot be resurrected under any other name. In fact, the governor recently signed HB 1201, which removed all remaining references to the TTC from state statutes. Perry has not attempted to resurrect it or do an “end run” around the legislature and the people.

Unlike the current administration in Washington, Perry finally heard the people and backed off.

Secession:
The governor never said that he wanted Texas to secede. Scholars know that Texas secession is an urban myth and certainly, the governor knows it as well.

What actually happened was that after people shouted “Secede!” at an Austin rally, he said that he understood their frustration but added, “We’ve got a great union. There is absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, who knows what may come of that. Texas is a very unique place, and we’re a pretty independent lot to boot.” It was obvious that he was playing to the crowd by implying that it could happen.

Perry emphasized that he was not advocating secession, but understands why Americans may have those feelings because of frustration. He said it’s fine to express the thought. He offered no apology and did not back away from his earlier comments. Perry’s remarks were in response to a question from The Associated Press as he walked away from the rally. The governor said he didn’t think Texas should secede despite some chatter about it on the Internet and his name being associated with the idea.

Have I covered all your lies/smears, jhobbes?

A talent for self immolation

charleyo Saturday, November 12th at 2:52PM EST (link)

Nice try. This Texas rancher knows better. Avagreen can try pulling the wool over the eyes of lap top conservatives in the ether of the Internet, but I know what Perry’s TTC meant to real Texans on the ground.
Ever hear of private property, avagreen? You should check it out. Quite a concept.
The TTC would have enriched Perry’s political buddies big time. Hence the term, Crony Capitalism.
Luckily for real conservatives and real patriots, this big government bully has a unique talent for self immolation so he won’t be on the national stage much longer.
And what’s with this ‘selective fencing’ routine? Are you for real? Son, you need to get out of your air raid shelter and visit Texas. We are being over-run by illegal aliens. You think a governor can’t do anything about it? Check out Arizona, Georgia and Okahoma, where the gov’s and legislatures got some cojones and illegal aliens are self deporting. There’s not a governor in the country, including the real liberal types, who’s worse on this issue than Perry.
Why are you making lame excuses for him? Or maybe you favor what’s going on. Is that it?
Of course Perry is not for secession. That was his idea of a joke. He’s spent most of his two terms working for the exact opposite, an economic union with Mexico and Canada. Hence the TTC, hence the look the other way policy towards illegal aliens, hence the open border.
Avagreen, I’m not interested in anyone’s lies and smears about anyone. I’m interested in the truth.
It is a wonder to me, who’s had to endure this rank politician for all these years, how so many people who think of themselves as conservatives have been taken in by this phony, this second rate tool of the big money oligarchs who own the Republican party of Texas and it’s governor.

Cheezy dog and pony shows otherwise disguised as debates

texayn Tuesday, November 15th at 6:16PM EST (link)

Thomas Jefferson was such a bad orator…he never delivered a State of the Union address. He wrote them for someone else to read. Writing was his strength and it was parlayed into the first representative republic on the face of the globe; and at a time in history when governance around the world was through kings, shoguns and dictators. Perry, like every other man is imperfect, but he is a principaled leader (spoken as a life-long Texan) and I do not believe he will buckle under pressure from the dems. He is comfortable with the fact that some will never agree with conservatism; so why pander to the left? Their ideas are to be defeated, not compromised with! He has made mistakes. How infantile is it to look for a candidate who is perfect?
These dog and pony shows otherwise disguised at debates are designed to appeal to the ADD riddled population that cannot think past a 30 second sound bite (MTV’ers). (We have progressive public schools to thank for that). I don’t care what the print intelligencia says about these stupid debates. They are not the be all; end all and they will be forgotten as soon as the primaries begin. Perry has countries visiting Austin to learn how “we do what we do” economically. Say what you will, Yankees are flocking to Perry’s state to look for a job and to save their families. It is beyond stupidity to think his leadership would not turn this country around. You’d have to have some nefarious, left leaning agenda of your own to not see that. You don’t have to like him to respect his ability and life long preparation to do the job.

Stand up to pressure

Televised debates, then, can become a test of whether the candidate can stand up to the pressure of being president in the modern, televised world. Remarkably, there were no presidential debates until the John F. Kennedy-Richard Nixon debate in 1960, when the TV networks figured out it would be a great stunt.

Serious concerns were raised about 73-year-old President Ronald Reagan’s leadership abilities during his 1984 debate with former Vice President Walter Mondale. Reagan flubbed his lines and appeared confused. The debate raised questions about Reagan’s ability to function under pressure.

It was Reagan’s “greatest humiliation as a public figure,” Schroeder writes about the debate. “This guy is gone,” Mondale told an aide immediately after the debate, as quoted in Schroeder’s book, “It’s scary, he’s not really up to the job.”

Reagan recovered in the second debate, saying he would not exploit “my opponent’s youth and inexperience” after a moderator essentially asked Reagan whether he was losing his grasp on reality. Mondale, in a new PBS documentary on debates, said that right after Reagan’s quip, he had known he’d lost the

election.
Come on,now,to call it over for Perry is absurd.

Unfortunately Perry

Michael_Handley Thursday, November 10th at 12:53AM EST (link)

has performed badly in all but one debate and that one was just ok. In this day and age you only get a few chances to shine and he is weak in the one area where he must be strong. Like I said before, I think he would make a good President but he won’t get the chance. Whoever debates Obama, he must clean Obama’s clock. He has to rattle him publically and make him look weak. It’s the National Debates that count and the candidate has to outshine the sitting President or it’s a no win…

Bachmann is the perfect example of what is wrong with the GOP

heraklios Thursday, November 10th at 9:59PM EST (link)

She has flaws, sure, but she is a solid conservative, a woman to boot, and could go toe to toe with Obama in any joint appearance. I have little doubt I would be happy with her appointments and policies. She presents herself pretty well, at least better than several of the other GOP candidates. Her character and integrity have not come under serious question, at least compared to some of the others, and she does not stick her finger in the wind to choose her opinions. Yet….

Somehow the GOP primary voters have written her off and she is given no chance. Rather than give up on solid conservatives like Bachmann, maybe we should give her another look rather than settle with Romney and concede the election to the Democrats.

The road to the nomination will be paved with the heads of good conservatives who could not get traction

usdebateboard Thursday, November 10th at 10:22PM EST (link)

And, make no mistake, Romney will make you think he’s a conservative when he has to.

Her vaccination claim was hypocritical and absurd

porkandcheese Friday, November 11th at 8:33AM EST (link)

She lost all credibility in that moment. Her tendency to just say anything was the voters’ biggest fear with Bachmann as the nominee. That confirmed it, plus she took a cheap shot at conservative to help Romney on an issue where she was “in the wrong” — if she truly believed taking donations from drug companies and supporting vaccinations for children is pure, unmitigated evil.

Zero has had a bullseye on Texas and we are sick and d— tired of it.

Closing drilling and refineries, EPA is there every time you turn around over some dumb lizard where there is a new shale find. No disaster relief for floods and wild fires! and no help on the border, you name it.

He no longer will let ICE deport an illegal. What are we supposed to do with them??

And….after he treated our Governor like dirt our Governor treated him like a gentleman and met his plane in Austin on an uninvited trip. Governor Perry tried to hand him a letter about immigration and The Great One would not even do him the honor of taking it. Instead, he treated Governor Perry like a messenger boy and made him had it to an aide and kept walking.

I am not sure Obama ever spoke to him.

I will say it again. Perry will rise to the occasion because he wants to save this country from Obama.

Perry’s response in the “spin room” about stepping in it was a good one.

Why is it that there never has been a question about Tort Reform from moderators in these “debates”?

Even with no income taxes, the recent growth in Texas would not have occurred without tort reform. This is the one area which has caused more manufacturing to move overseas than unions or taxation. It is a serious problem with not only ambulance chasers going cha ching, but also the law firms with represent the defendants.

2) If I am not mistaken, the next debate is Saturday. If he can put together a complete solid debate this time (he was SO close!) he should be able to at least quell the story, and have a chance to recover.

the rare opportunity, except for Cain of coarse, to see whether the candidate really knows and believes in their own rhetoric. It’s why Newt does so well. It is, agree or disagree, why Cain, the gaffe machine that he is, does well.

Perry is very unprepared for this, and it is showing up majorly in the debates. The goodnews is that I really don’t think Perry is out of this thing yet. He is improving and if he continues to improve, I’m sure Cain will give him plenty of opportunity to regain the front position. Time is very short, very short, and we must consolidate. A divided party will not win against Obama.

congressworksforus (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 3:11PM EST (link)

Look, we get it. You’re not a Cain fan, but the repeated claims of his lies are themselves lies. You have a warped sense of reality.

Case in point. At least one of the settlements (and claims!) took place AFTER he left the NRA. In talking to some folks last night watching the debate, one of whom is a senior manager, this whole issue came up, and he was asked if one of his former employees at a previous job made a claim of sexual harrassment, would he be notified by his former employer?

“No. If the company settled it would be against their interest to involve me in the settlement.”

Show me one actual LIE, or shut up.

Remember, if the left wins, abortion will not only be legal, it will be mandatory.

Which one is a lie? One of these must be.

Cain referencing Sharon Bialek

“I reject all accusations,” he said in a defiant interview with ABC/Yahoo. “I don’t remember that. And also I don’t remember knowing her.”

“Asked whether she was lying, he replied: “yes.””

How would he know she was lying if he doesn’t remember her or the incident? He can either claim he doesn’t remember her and, consequently, has no idea whether she is lying or he does remember that evening and can claim she is lying.

He is 65, maybe he has dementia or senility. He certainly has an absence of logic.

I'm missing the contradiction, Tbone

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 5:19PM EST (link)

If someone alleges an event that didn’t occur, that would be a lie (or hallucination). Cain says the event didn’t occur. Thus, he can logically label her statement a lie (or otherwise contrary to fact).

Now calling her statement a “lie” could be challenged by the question as to how he could know her state of mind +/- intent. But I don’t think that’s what you’re arguing.

Cain really would be best off sticking to saying that the incident didn’t happen rather going the next step of attacking his accuser as a liar – that’s for the public to decide between the conflicting statements.

Too much attack raises the suspicion of “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” – and that’s not something he will want to evoke. Time should clarify matters further – or at least settle the demarcation line between the two camps.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. So, which is the true statement? They can’t both be true.

Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.

You're completely correct here with this example, Tbone

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 8:25PM EST (link)

Lots of folks down the ages have awakened the morning after in an unfamiliar bed and faced that same dilemma regarding the preceding night’s events.

On the other hand, if the event in question occurred six months earlier, you might not remember the specifics of what you did that night, but might be sure that you never had been in that person’s room and/or had never met the person before (the Justin Bieber paternity defense).

I had read Cain’s answer as being in the second paragraph – but if all he was doing was saying “I don’t remember” (first paragraph) then I agree with your description that he can’t have it both ways.

Moreover, it’s Cain’s responsibility to make clear whether his answer was an affirmative denial of the event happening, or whether he’s just saying he couldn’t remember. Courtroom testimony tactics don’t cut it when your running for President.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

How about when he played dumb about the cases?

porkandcheese Friday, November 11th at 8:36AM EST (link)

Then he remembered telling Curt Anderson in 2004 when he worked on his senate campaign and figured only he would have leaked it to the media.

He did lie (1st some questions for Cain)

tricianc (Diary) Friday, November 11th at 11:48PM EST (link)

The first comment I’ll make is what I’d like asked of Mr. Cain. Sir, is it a coincidence that you resigned before your tenure was up right after accuser #2 filed her complaint with the NRA in 1999? Were you asked to resign? Mr. Cain, you stated you told your wife in 1999 of the allegation. Why didn’t you tell her in 1998 when the first accuser made allegations and received a settlement? Is it because you had to leave the NRA in 1999 that you finally had to tell her?

Lie #1 Originally he denied there were any allegations or settlements at all. The NRA in their press release when they gave accuser #2 permission to have her lawyer read her statement, they said Mr. Herman Cain disputes all of these allegations. Soon after JD Gordon of the Cain camp verified this. How could he have disputed them if he didn’t know about them and the details of the allegations?

Lie #2: Also after “recalling” he said he knew there was a settlement because he heard about it from a friend who worked there.

Lie # 3 If he knew about the allegations from accuser #2, then it is beyond the realm of reason, especially in the position he was in and how the NRA handled investigations, he didn’t know about accuser #1′s allegations and settlements which were a year prior in 1998.

I could go on an on.

What’s disgusting now is he hired a lawyer who told the public that these women and others should think twice. So he used his power and money to threaten them and to shut them up. They can’t afford to fight him.

That’s what we want for a President? Really? We have that President now.

Fixing one sentence.

Still for Rick Perry

Benta_Nordstrom Thursday, November 10th at 2:44AM EST (link)

Perry may have stumbled at the debate but he wasn’t the first candidate to ever do so and he won’t be the last! Obama is suppose to be a “good speaker ” and look at the shape the country is in !! Mitt Romney also “speaks well” and he can’t decide where he really stands on most issues!!
Perry looks to be the most conservative of the candidates and thus we will continue to support him.

OK...

congressworksforus (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 3:14PM EST (link)

And if he continues to stumble in debates? Do you think anyone who isn’t a GOP member is going to take him seriously against Obama?

Good grief, SNL has already started lampooning him. You think it gets any better from here if he continues to fall flat every time?

Now, the good news is that I really don’t think it can get any worse than last night. :)

Remember, if the left wins, abortion will not only be legal, it will be mandatory.

SNL was already lampooning him

Ooooops is not the end of the world

Katie Thursday, November 10th at 5:19AM EST (link)

Perry can come out of the “oooops” moment just fine. He is affable and humble enough to laugh it off and it just may add to the “I’d like to have a beer with him” factor.

Everyone makes mistakes, sure. And this is a big one. Heck, I felt sick when he made the mistake and even worse when I was checking out my twitter feed after. But he recovered and held his own for the rest of the debate – almost unfazed.

But had that happenned during the main debate with Obama in the election it could have killed his chances. Better now than later!

Good grief, in the grand scheme of things, it is hardly the end of the world! Perry is a very humble, honest and decent man (not to mention funny) with loads of character. Thanks for your support, Katie. It means a lot to me and many others.

It’s amazing to see this nonsensical, head-in-the sand response by so many of you Perry supporters. Just being a true conservative is NOT enough. It takes more than having a strong value system to be President. You must be able to actually articulate what you believe in the pressure cooker of debates and in the media spot light. Perry is unable to do that. Period.

Perry would get crushed in a debate with Obama. Period. And that would not serve us conservatives well in the general election. Wake up people!

I think large crowds effect Perry’s performance. He does well discussing and debating on tv. His debate with O’Reilly and with others are quite impressive. Grade Perry on his track record, don’t forget Romney was 47th in job creation in an UP ECONOMY!!!

RomneyCare is Right Wing Socialism – please feel free to use is as often as possible…….it will kill his campaign.

because of this. I will always vote for the man with the best record in governing and Perry has the best one by far. Perry had a human moment last night and we all know that he is a bad debater and he even admits that he is a bad debater. Presidents do not and should not govern in 30 seconds sound bites and 3 second zingers. May be those who think this way are now a rare breed in the electorate but it is what it is.
If Perry or to lesser degree Gingrich is not the nominee then I am not voting for President. No other candidate deserve to be President. If that would the case then I will only vote for Congress.

jgge, Perry all the way to the White House

These so called debates laughable

greyeagle Thursday, November 10th at 8:26AM EST (link)

Why did the Republican Party set up these numerous debates with liberal moderators? I would never vote for someone based on these debates. Perry has walked the walk and talked the talk in TX. I know his record and he can beat Obama and the teleprompter. He does fine in a one to one. Obama has insulted him and has tried to destroy the state of TX in anyway he could. Liberals are out to destroy Perry, because that is who Obama fears. I will not change my support for Perry based on these debates, which are laughable.

greyeagle, amen, I wholeheartedly agree with you

texasroots Thursday, November 10th at 9:07AM EST (link)

I cannot stand to watch the debates. The gotcha debates are demeaning for all the candidates. I hope Perry only does the foreign policy debate, and no mas. Perry should spend the rest of his time one- on- one.

Laughable is right, greyeagle! The libs, RINOs,

ambulance-chasing lawyers (because of the tort reform law that Perry signed), Rove, et al., have been out for him with the long knives for a long time – long before he ever entered the Presidential race. Now they are really, really, really angry that he did because, you are most correct, he is the one they all fear the most!

The repub “establishment” apparently sets up these stupid debates. My view of it is that they have made their choice as to who “deserves” to win the nomination based on who they can “convince” – with the least resistance – to “go along” with them in order to feather their own nests. This year their pick is obviously Romney, joined by my once-favorite “fair and balanced” channel that I now refer to as Faux News. And there are are many, many more. And it ain’t pretty.

No way will I bail out on Perry.

Even the rest of the answer prior to the brain freeze was pretty good

clowngirl (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 8:44AM EST (link)

but dang it! Governor Perry has got to be prepping a lot better for these debates.

I think he has the potential to actually be a good debater. Read an article on his attack on Romney for hiring illegals to do his lawn (a cheap shot, but in a righteous cause) and was really rather impressed. It had been planned in advance, because they’d determined that attacking Romney on his private hiring choices for his own house would be the most likely to rattle him. And it worked.

I’m not saying he should keep going negative on the other candidates — but if they put that much thought into developing a strategy for every debate and prepare thoroughly for every likely question we’ll soon be talking about whether it’ll be Perry or Gingrich rather than Romney or Cain.

Last night was like an actor going up on his lines. Actors don’t generally do that because they’re stupid or incapable of giving a performance — it’s just a matter of not knowing them well enough. You have to make sure you know your part cold — to be certain nothing will throw you off.

Perry just needs to prep a lot more. Learn his own plans so well that he can recite any part of it while under pressure, or even under attack. Know his record so well that his strongest accomplishments are always fresh in his memory and ready to be mentioned should an appropriate opportunity arise.

These debate performances are giving an inaccurate impression of the Governor. They’re unforced errors and there’s no excuse for it.

Debates are a big part of how a lot of the electorate decides who they think should be President. The Perry Camp needs to take that seriously and give them a LOT higher priority.

It happens to everyone

gator_hoo (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 9:39AM EST (link)

Unfortunately the timing could not have been worse. Think he was prepped, heck he even knew what parts of it’s business that Caterpillar moved to Texas.

The one thing I would say that I am really amazed that he did not do, and this is a great credit to his character, but not to his debate skills, is once the EPA was out there, he should have just stuck with it. He could have revised later, nobody was going to hold him to that. Heck, even if he would have revised the answer in the next question, it would not have been so bad.

It happens to everyone... in casual conversation

clowngirl (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 10:00AM EST (link)

not in high stakes situations for which they should be well prepared in advance.

If an actor was making their Broadway debut and totally forgot an important line — they would almost certainly be fired.

Hopefully the other actors would somehow cover for them — but they’d be gone nonetheless.

Unless they were some movie star whose name sold tickets – but I digress.

I think Governor Perry should stay in the race. I’m just saying this needs to stop happening and that it’s preventable.

All I could do was laugh along with everyone else–which is what Perry is doing this morning.

really brilliant moments, haven’t we. In fact, someone should start a diary where we could post our oooooooops moments – maybe even send a copy to Team Perry. That would warm their hearts, and we could all have some good laughs.

I’ll have to study really hard on all of my stupid stuff (having lived so long) – most of it took place when I was young, naive and hadn’t yet fallen off the turnip truck, so to speak. So my stupid moments were usually when I would put together words in such a way to end up as a double entendre and of which I was totally unaware – unknowingly, obviously, because I was so naive. So there I would stand with everyone around me roaring with laughter and stupid me didn’t have the foggiest as to why they were laughing. So, I’ll have to figure out a way to clean up one of them to be posted in polite society for the world to see. Haven’t figured it out yet. Trying to just describe such situations just now was difficult! ;-)

that I can use in public!

Years ago, when I was first pregnant, I began symptoms of miscarrying and was hospitalized (that is the way it was back then). Talk about a dumb bunny – that was me! The head nurse came in to question me and asked “Honey, when did you begin to abort?” I was horrified, starting wailing and gulped out “But I haven’t done anything to harm my baby. I would NEVER do that!” Lordy, I had never heard the term abort unless it was used as abortion situation. She was really nice about it, though, and calmed me down, and that was after other nurses came in wondering why I was wailing. Ended up losing the baby, though, but did go on to have two precious ones.

Anyway, I have laughed about that down through the years. We all have our really, really dumb moments.

Oh, you poor thing, pttx333!

I think Perry endeared himself to a lot of people

tyman Thursday, November 10th at 10:05AM EST (link)

Yes, I know he’s running for President, but I think a lot of people will find themselves identifying with Perry.

Erick said not too long ago that it’s not always the best candidate, but the most likeable. Well, to me, Perry is still the best candidate for the job based on his record.

I’m still sticking with him because I’ve looked at the other candidates and either see too many negatives or simply no experience or record. And I mean that I’ve looked and looked!

Perry should make even more light of forgetting the Dept. of Energy…all of the departments he named are complete misnomers. The Dept. of Commerce doesn’t create commerce. The Dept. of Education doesn’t educate anybody. And the Dept. of Energy doesn’t created any energy. To me, that’s really funny that it’s such a do nothing agency, Perry’s didn’t even remember it.

Some guy just called into Boortz and said that Perry should’ve said, “Sorry, my teleprompter broke”. That would’ve been classic!

I just can’t believe that people are worried about a debater against Obama. 57 states. Corpsemen. Soldiers who we’re memorializing are still with us. My bowling is like Special Olympics.

Oh, and let’s not forget Biden. “Stand up Chuck…aww….(Biden realizes Chuck, can’t stand up as he is in a wheelchair)…God love ya, Chuck! Well, let’s all stand up for Chuck”.

How many have ever gone into a job interview and flubbed? Even though you knew you were more than well qualified for the job. Yep, me too, and I think a lot of folks will identify with Perry on that.

Remember: to err is human, to forgive is divine.

I agree, tyman, and think all of the pettiness

Not to mention the fact that Romney and Cain could get away with murder while Perry is crucified for every little mistake. I exaggerate much with the murder comment, I know, but think about it. Cain can “forget” about settlements or whether he met any of the 5 women who accused him of sexual harrassment–but Perry isn’t allowed to forget one of dozens of federal agencies he’d like to get rid of?

Don’t let the media define the narrative. If Cain can raise $1 million in sympathy donations, why shouldn’t we start an unofficial money bomb for Perry? For as long as this story is in the news, we should be flooding Team Perry with donations big and small, letting them know that we won’t drop him like a hot potato just because he makes a VERY human mistake.

I was thinking some what along these lines myself. I don’t want to down play the serious fumble by Perry’s brain freeze but…

This could play to his advantage, where people can easily identify with Perry’s brain freeze last night.

I don’t know but I do know Perry is the most qualified, most conservative person who has the governing experience but lacks debate skills (out of all the flaws in all the candidate I would argue that is the least of our worries in regard to flaws, and a fixable one too).

Rush just mentioned Obama in an '08 debate

tyman Thursday, November 10th at 12:34PM EST (link)

not even being able to mention one agency that he’d cut, when asked that by Bob Schieffer (sp?).

Rush said Obama went on and on about “we’re gonna cut, and blah, blah, blah” and he never mentioned one agency.

After Rush’s lovefest for Herman the last week and a half, it’s good that he’s taking up for Perry.

I had a brain freeze about an hour ago (and I’m only in my early forties). I just could NOT think of the name of the computer file I needed to open, even though I’ve worked on it for the last 8 months. Just couldn’t recall it.

How many times do you think Rick Perry has called that agency by name in the last 10 years, having to deal with them in Texas? Perry probably considers DoE a bad word.

As I said in another post, if the economy tanks the next year like I think it will, people will be begging for Obama to just go. Any Republican will beat Obama. We need to make sure it’s someone who understands what must be done, and I believe Perry is the only one who does.

Perry will not need getting up to speed on so many issues: securing the border, energy, government regulations, etc. Perry has faced all of Obama’s failings on a daily basis as Governor and I believe he knows how to fix what they’ve gotten wrong, or eliminate them.

Scope did mention that Sabato was wearing a new rug, though. ;-)

Perry is still my candidate...

nativetexan41 Thursday, November 10th at 11:26AM EST (link)

I am encouraged by things said on this website for Perry. I thought he had a good debate and has handled his gaffe with humor. We need his leadership and experience as Gov. for our nominee. He is a conservative. We are the party of family values, 2 of our candidates don’t qualify in my opinion. Romney is not a conservative and what does he stand for on the issues that we care about.
Go Perry!!

Perry should drop out. I predicted he would before Iowa

I think he should, even though he’ll probably wait for the caucus night to get out of the race.

He just lacks the talent to be a national candidate. This was accepted by everybody, including his inner circle, till a few months ago. I still don’t understand how people suddenly started convincing themselves of the opposite. Perry is a machine man and those guys are also useful. And they can win elections in one-state parties in most situations. But running for President? That’s a whole different league.

thirstyboots, why should Perry drop out?

izoneguy (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 12:16PM EST (link)

And let’s just give Obama 4 more.

NUTS – Perry can shake this off and go forward.

Funny, Perry was not the one that ran guns to Mexico that have killed
hundreds of people.

Funny, Perry was not the one that mandated healthcare for Mass.
that is strangling it’s budget.

Funny, Perry is not the one who is on his third wife.

Funny, Perry is not the one who is flip-flopping on every important issue.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

I said Perrry would drop out more than one month ago

thirstyboots Thursday, November 10th at 12:25PM EST (link)

Follow the link. And it’s just a matter of time.

I think Perry should drop because he is going nowhere and he has a state to govern (unlike the other guys). Had he resigned from TX governor, I’d be okay with him staying in the race, a la Santorum.

I don’t agree that Perry is superior in terms of policy relatively to other guys, but in the end his biggest problem is the lack of talent to play at this level.

We need a president than can make the case for conservative reform. That’s the major role of the President: sell the ideas to the public. Perry simply can’t do that. Even if he wanted to promote a conservative agenda, he isn’t good at articulating conservative principles and actions. That’s essential. That’s what pushes legislators to act, the favors of the public.

Rule of thumb: if your supporters are whining that CNBC moderators are too rough for you to handle and that you should just ran away from them, you’re not presidential material.

If He Does - Who is Really Left?

carolynr Thursday, November 10th at 12:12PM EST (link)

Perry is not a machine. That little metaphor should go to Romney. I am going to assume that you, thirsty boots have a human side. Have you ever made a mistake…ever? Have you ever gone blank? I have. Do you know why I did…because I was trying to perform to the audience instead of myself. I got too much into other people’s impression (which btw is sick today) than just spelling it out. Do you want someone that tells you the truth or someone that tells you what you want to hear?

Romney – He tells you what you want to hear…eight ways to Sunday.
Cain – He can’t keep his stories straight and misquotes ALL THE TIME…but we give him a break BECAUSE HE IS BLACK. Darn sure didn’t give Perry a break when he had a gaffe…did you or they.
Bachmann – She is not strong enough…will probably be a VP pick…and she knows it. She panders to Romney and that makes me sick.
Santorum is trying to resurrect the mid 1900′s wherein he claims that our manufacturing can compete in the world and subsidizes all manufacturing by having them pay no taxes. Guess who pays for them.
Paul – Way too radical with foreign affairs for me. We do need a military…I wonder if Paul would have one for President.
Huntsman – Very smart…but he is not Conservative. I will tell you this…he does stick to his convictions…whether I agree with them or not…and that is why he is better than Romney.
Gingrich – Too much baggage out there. Besides a segway to Cain’s asserted mess…Last night…$$$ from Fannie and Freddie. No…No…No. I don’t want the Bushie’s and their spending back in DC.

Stop it

It wasn't even that big a deal

kowalski (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 12:27PM EST (link)

Jeez I’ve watched debaters and people at press conferences practically fold themselves in half at the podium and they dust themselves off and come back and they’re OK.

Let’s look beyond this debate and ask the next pertinent question:

Who do you think would do well one-on-one against Barack Obama in a debate?

I think Rick Perry would actually do better 1-1, by a lot, than he’s done so far. It’s just a hunch, but it’s a strong hunch, that he’d be very strong there. I think he’s just got to small a space on the stage, as it were. He’s a man who is tempermentally more well suited to the kind of debate that happens after the Republican Primary, where he’s on the stage debating the guy whose job he intends to win. It’s just a feeling I have about him but everything I see so far is that he’s really interested in the Main Ring, not so much the sideshows.

Romney, of course, is just always extremely well prepared. I’d expect nothing less of him at this point. It’s his forte.

In other words I get the sense these

kowalski (Diary) Thursday, November 10th at 12:37PM EST (link)

I get the sense these debates don’t really get him focused and fired up. He’d much rather debate The One than he would debate The Others, if you know what I mean.

I think he is handling this amazingly well. He is diffusing all of the vitriol by laughing at himself. It makes him human and likeable.

By going on all of the talk shows he is setting his own narrative. The truth is that everyone knows Perry knew exactly which three agencies he would cut, he just blanked out. He is reinforcing that it was a brain freeze and not a lack of knowledge. I have to admit, I am impressed.

The reality is that all of us have had “one of those moments.” One of my brain freezes came when I was talking to a patient and their caregiver. It was a pleasant conversation, except for the fact that during the entire conversation I called the patient the WRONG name. After I stopped talking, the caregiver politely corrected me. It was totally embarassing. There was nothing I could do but apologize.

Our society has become a 60 second news flash.
It saddens me with a good portion of Americans never get involved, never go on the internet to check out the canidate, never watch a debate.
They will simply turn on to the media outlet of their choice and pick up what the media decides are the highlights of an event.
Then based on that 60 second sound bite make a choice on who they want as the next president.
Then when things like our economy goes down the tubes they wonder how they got it so wrong.
Let us not get it wrong this time.

I honestly don’t get it. This is indeed a bizarre race. I don’t see any meaningful differences among any of the candidates (except possibly Ron Paul). Debbie Wasserman-Schultz may have been correct that they are “interchangeable Legos,” even if her reasoning was faulty. I likely won’t get a say in the primary living in Texas, and it is just as well because I have yet to see anything that would compel me to participate in it if I did.

For those that support a candidate for their polling results, rather than their principles, we may just as well get behind Obama and re-elect him. With all of the polling going on, Obama’s approvals are going up, and his dis-approvals are going down. It’s funny how that works isn’t it? The higher Cain goes in the polls, the higher Obama goes in the polls also. Have you noticed that over the last week or so?

These debates are hurting Republicans

texabama Thursday, November 10th at 11:39PM EST (link)

and that is why Obama’s numbers are climbing. Pundits are spending their time analyzing these debates or making negative comments about the candidates instead of reporting what is happening in our country and the world. If more time were being spent on Fast & Furious, Solyndra, how close we are to hitting our $15 trillion ceiling and the implosion of the European debt we would not need to worry about anyone debating Obama. His poll numbers would be so low that it would be a moot point.

No, I don't think so.

Menlo (Diary) Friday, November 11th at 1:19AM EST (link)

With a few small dips, Obama’s been doing pretty well all along in terms of people who will ultimately hold their noses and vote for him. I don’t think any of those things are going to make a difference. Most everyone is well aware of the macroeconomic and debt problems, and I think they are very much aware that there is a lot of “waste, fraud, and abuse” in government. Unfortunately, upset over the current administration is unlikely to win the election.

IronDioPriest (Diary) Friday, November 11th at 5:09AM EST (link)

Millions upon millions of voters will make their electoral decision based on how the candidates match up in a head-to-head exchange of policy and style during the presidential debates.

Perhaps it shouldn’t be that way. Perhaps the American people should care enough to do their own research and not rely on the packaged and presented extravaganzas. But that’s not the real world.

When support of a candidate in spite of their flaws devolves into making excuses for them repeatedly for the same weaknesses, one needs to look at their motivation for support. Perry may have been a fine governor for Texas. But it is painfully clear that when we need him to shine in a contest against Barack Hussein Obama, he will fail to shine. Because he’s dim.

This is my concern as well, Perry might have a better mousetrap, but he's got to sell it

Common_Cents (Diary) Friday, November 11th at 11:49AM EST (link)

RS people pushing Perry’s record on RS is preaching to the choir. We get it. The problem is the rest of America doesn’t read RS. Half of them still think obama is cool and educated, they want to be elite too, so they identify with him. They don’t get past headlines and sound bytes. We have to be competitive there.

That is sadly reality. The outcomes of a race seem to boil down to a few simple words and impressions. That’s it. Not policy nuance, not accomplishments but the ability to communicate and connect with people logically and emotionally. The bar is much higher for REP as DEM gets a pass through their party wing called the lame stream media.

It is just that simple.

The DEM leftist media is already winning as they are framing the debate. REP’s are being compared with perfection, and NOT being compared to Obama. We are losing this battle. It’s brainwashing voters.

Why oh why the GOP leadership and campaigns are putting their heads into the biased media debate guillotines is beyond me. Can anyone in the GOP get some fair and balanced questions, moderators, debates? Nobody can negotiate the terms of the debates?

It is fruitless for Perry supporters to keep pounding his record on RS, we all know he’d make a great President, but there are major concerns of his ability to get there.

Instead of repeating his record and preaching to the choir, we need information on how Perry can make up for his inability to debate, by tearing it up on the ground. How can he do that across the US? TX is big enough, but now he is looking at a national race. Can one man cover the country sufficiently to overcome his public debate persona?

Elections SHOULD be about leadership, accomplishment, policy. But reality is it is much about connecting with people, image, first impressions. We can all bitch about reality but it still is reality.

Until the GOP gets strategic about the hostile media, we’ll always have a 200lb anchor around our collective necks. The bar will always be higher.

I’d like to see us quit bailing out the boat and quit complaining about the hole, and start taking steps in plugging the hole of the biased media that is a powerful arm of the DEM party.

First, I don’t really agree with preaching to the choir here. True, I don’t expect to change too many minds of the posters here but there are thousands and thousands of people who visit this site daily who never post (lurkers) and it is their opinions and minds that I think about.

Two, does Perry has to do a much better job in debating and articulating his message in debates? Of course, I will never deny that. That is Perry’s biggest flaw. I will strongly argue two points with this though:
1) Perry is great, just perfect at articulating his message in interviews and if you doubt that you need to look at his interviews.

2) All the candidates have flaws, some more serious than others but every single candidate has a flaw. More importantly every single candidate can lose the general election because of their flaws. Anyone that says Perry’s bad debates will lose the election isn’t being honest about the other candidates and their flaws and how their flaws could also lose the election.

So in the end, if you accept that all candidates have flaws and these flaws could be damaging in the general election – I suggest we all take a good look at what these flaws are for each candidates. Then couple that with: who is the most conservative candidate, the most experience in governing and the record to back that up. There is clearly only one choice when you take all this in to consideration – Rick Perry

Which is why we must keep educating the people we know. When you go someplace where you might be challenged for your support of Perry (for me, that’s my grandparents’ house), bring along your underlined, dog-eared copy of “Fed Up!” and NEVER enter that place of challenge without it. What, you don’t have “Fed Up!”????? Every Perry supporter should have a copy. It’s not a hard book and it’s highly entertaining.

Blog about Perry. Share good articles and videos about him on Twitter. Bring him up in conversations; know your facts so that you can challenge any snide or ignorant remarks. Save your loose change in a jar and send it to Perry at the end of the month. $5 is the minimal amount for a donation; it’s not hard to raise that much in loose change.

Homeschoolers! I know there HAVE to be other homeschoolers–whether students or parents–on RedState besides me. Talk about Rick Perry’s pro-homeschooling record with your co-op. Put together a Facebook page of “[insert your state her] Homeschoolers for Rick Perry.” Oklahoma homeschoolers already have a Facebook.

Common_Cents, you’re right–we’re preaching to the choir here at RedState, and we MUST get competitive. I think it’s gekster who has in his/her signature something about “Stop whining and do something.” Sorry, I can’t remember the exact quote, but I know it’s close to that. We don’t have to be on Fox News or part of a CPAC to effect change. We must start working right where we are.

IronDioPriest (Diary) Saturday, November 12th at 10:31AM EST (link)

… that it is up to Perry supporters to sell people on Rick Perry, because Rick Perry is failing to do so on his own.

That makes no sense. That’s Ron Paul “disciple” territory there. You want to end up being ridiculous? Repeatedly tell people they need to vote for someone who has demonstrated to their satisfaction that he is not up to the task. Soon, you’ll be a “Perrybot”.

It is up to the candidates to sell themselves to the American people. If you have to bring a book everywhere you go to dispel the negative impression of a candidate that is born of HIS OWN ineptitude at running for President, you are placing your effort in the wrong place, my friend.

The Presidency

Wayne (Diary) Friday, November 11th at 9:02AM EST (link)

is really about leadership isn’t it? And, if so, we all have to decide if Perry is the kind of leader that can take the financial problems of this country and turn them around. He’s human. He’s sincere, he’s capable and willing.

Isn’t that what we need? A capable, willing and sincere candidate dedicated to the idea that big government and big business are the problem and not the answer?

How about

ericblair00 Saturday, November 12th at 3:15PM EST (link)

a candidate that is willing, sincere, and intelligent? Personally, I’d like a candidate that can string together a few sentences without looking silly. Huntsman and Romney are head and shoulders above the other candidates in their preparation and articulation.

Intelligent?

Wayne (Diary) Saturday, November 12th at 3:39PM EST (link)

Your appraisal of Perry as not being Intelligent is not accurate. He has strung together a number of sentences without looking silly, but there is nothing that can be done about what people and the media choose to focus on. My focus is on his record and that I “sense” that he will keep his word about what he will do if he is elected.

I would suggest that you are not focussed on the right thing and are predisposed against him in more or less a prejudicial way. Which may not be bad if you have done your homework and can articulate why you believe as you do without making superficial references.

And, other than Defense, State and,er, ah…

…ah, er..

…Interior..

I frankly don’t care WHICH three departments Governor Perry would choose to eliminate. ANY three would be fine. Fold the important functions of whichever department he eliminates into the remaining ones, fire the bureaucrats, sell the office furniture, and rent out the buildings. Fine by me.

I have a sense that Governor Perry’s instincts are solid, conservative and good. Furthermore, I understand he may be suffering a bit on his feet for prolonged periods by virtue of back surgery. But, the fact remains that the nomination was his to be had right after he announced, and his inability to articulate his principles has shredded his campaign. I don’t know what he can do to fix it at the moment, except to concentrate on how to debate, and master it as a skill. It can be done.

But remember the famous words of Gerald Ford at his second debate with Jimmy Carter: “There is no Soviet Domination in Eastern Europe, and under a Ford Administration, there never will be!”. Oops. Pat Caddell can tell you what happened after that…

Watching Perry against Obama would be a constant wince-fest at this juncture, and Conservatism would be the fatality. Debating is part of the process, and he’d better get damned good at it– Quickly.

Tonight was a good start.

gator_hoo (Diary) Sunday, November 13th at 3:23AM EST (link)

I agree with your basic points. I do think we are focusing more on debates this year than any previous primary, and I’m not sure entirely why that is. The cynical answer is that Perry entered as the strongest non-Romney, and the establishment set up the insane debate schedule to help Mitt. The less cynical answer is that it just happened, and people focused on debates because Perry has been bad (although his being bad has been in fits and spurts, if you watch his first few debates he had some really solid moments as well, which were overshadowed by bad moments).

Good overall performance, as I stated below. I think his favorables will improve. He can’t rest on one good debate, but if he can string together a few shows and places (considering Newt has won every debate, it is a bit too much to expect a win), it might be enough to reestablish him as the not-Romney, when people start looking at non-debate Newt.

1) If you are responding to my comment –which I am not clear you are– then, you should use the “reply to this” button, which appears below the post entry to which you wish to respond.

2) If you are providing a web address that you would like people to read, it ought to be given as a link– the threads are read-only, and I cannot even cut-and-paste the address you’ve given.

Perry is recovering

LibertyWins (Diary) Sunday, November 13th at 2:18AM EST (link)

he won this debate tonight!

Liberty without Virtue is Slavery to Vice

I wouldn't go so far as to say he won

gator_hoo (Diary) Sunday, November 13th at 3:13AM EST (link)

But at least for the television part (haven’t had a chance to see the Internet-only portion), I honestly feel like he was the best non-Newt, and if we were to handicap in the way they do in golf, then he “won.”. He also had the two most memorable moments, which is always a good thing in today’s sound bite culture.
1). “I’m glad you remembered.”
2). “Foreign aid starts at zero.”. (and the look on Perry’s face when Newt agreed with him was priceless).

He unfortunately has a long way to go, but I felt he came across as both likable and informed. Frankly, I would be shocked if his favorables don’t improve.

If I had to criticize him for anything, it would be reaching to answer the last question too often. My guess is that his debate coach told Jim to do that, because it gave him a moment to get together his thoughts on that topic while the person was answering, and then gave him an opportunity to think about his question while he answered the last. Frankly, it was great advice, and it gave him an opportunity to go into more areas than most of the candidates. I don’t know if it seemed like a bit of a crutch to people other than myself, but even so, better to lean on a crutch than fall on your face.

Finally, I think one thing that serendipitously aided him was getting the last question for the television audience. In my mind, allowing him to close the tv portion gave him a certain gravitas as a candidate that he quite frankly needed. People following casually will consider him as a still viable candidate because of that. I am sure CBS hoped they were giving Perry one last chance to flub. The answer wasn’t his strongest of the night, but it was solid, and showed him to be an “idea” guy.

So Newt and Perry I think will both see their numbers pick up.

One winner we know: 17-12 Go Cocks!

Yet another reason why I support Rick Perry

izoneguy (Diary) Monday, November 14th at 4:57PM EST (link)

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Perry unveils government reform plan

1bunny Tuesday, November 15th at 12:25AM EST (link)

from a tweet I got earlier:

Team Rick Perry
Tomorrow morning, @GovernorPerry will unveil his government reform plan. Catch a preview-9:35AM ET on Glenn Beck Radio

I can’t wait to see this plan. His jobs and tax plans were great so I expect this reform plan will continue the reasons why we support Rick Perry.

The right scoop has video of Perry speaking today

onemovoter (Diary) Tuesday, November 15th at 12:54AM EST (link)

And he mentions his plans tomorrow. Good overall speech which is getting better in content and expression. Runs about 24 minutes.

Rick Perry Iowa speech announces plan

http://www.therightscoop.com/rick-perry-announces-plan-to-uproot-all-three-branches-of-government/

Excerpt

“Tomorrow I’m gonna unveil a plan to uproot all three branches of government and overhaul Washington. It touches every branch of government because they each have contributed to the demise of America.

I’m gonna address lifetime federal judges who arrogantly rewrite our laws from the bench.

I’m gonna address the permanent bureaucracy of the executive branch which thwarts the will of the American people to advance a big government agenda.

I’m gonna put forward some very dramatic reforms for a Congress, that not only spends too much, but is in Washington too much.”

“I don’t make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.”- Will Rogers

I'll have to take a look at this....

I have to say he has a good paraellel three-pronged thesis statement, though. :B

Watched the speech, and it’s a good one. Here’s hoping for a fillibuster-proof majority and enough Republicans brave enough to sponsor and pass such legislation.

Support him, but NOT my first choice

sticktotheconstitution Tuesday, November 15th at 2:32AM EST (link)

We (constitutional conservatives) need an UNDAMAGED candidate who can compete with a smooth-talking, forked-tongue man such as Obama. A candidate who performs poorly in debates, no matter how qualified, is unfit to compete in the general election.
