Semantics really, but in my opinion my company in the RWE club includes Jefferson, Adams, Washington, Franklin, Paine and many, many others.

Watch for little Kabuki acts, such as immigration “reform” defeated by “moderates” to placate their perceived yahoos, to cover their Cap and Trade vote and possibly one on healthcare.

Modern conservatives must disabuse themselves of the notion that there is not a dimes worth of difference between the parties.

My last calculation found a $1.4 trillion difference between ObamaDems’ first budget and George W. Bush’s worst.

This, or the first part, needs to be included in every possible announcement supporting the Republican Party.

so to be moderate is to be against the base. You have to be like a good leftist(sort of like those that are loved in Suburban DC and other leftist havens). From what I’ve seen in SW LA, it seems that if it had more people than say New Orleans, poor Mary Landreu whouldn’t be senator. Really, in AR and LA the reason that Lincoln and Landreu keep getting elected is because of singular large cities like Little Rock and New Orleans. Zell Millers and Lloyd Bensons are hard to come by now. Really, the Democratic party just keeps killing the idea of a Moderate Democrat.

When I was growing up in LA, there was such a thing as “boll weevil” Democrats. But virtually all of them changed parties under Reagan, and since then the idea of “conservative Southern Democrats” is virtually non-existent. The last of them in my mind was Zell Miller.

People like Lincoln and Landrieu are most certainly not conservatives – they are only as moderate as they can get away with and still get re-elected. Landrieu doesn’t need to worry as much because she knows that she can get ACORN-style help in NOLA.

There are some semi-moderate Democrats here and there, but they are scattered around the country. There are no more boll weevils in politics, though there are certainly plenty of worms.

I do define as moderate the members of Congress who sit on appropriation committees. Guys like Ted Stevens and Don Young of Alaska. They do not appear to me like your more narrow definition of moderates who are Rockefeller country clubbers whose wives and daughters forget to take the pill.
Guys like Stevens and Young have had to be moderate in order to win something for their State or CD in the appropriation process. There are some Flakes who get very upset with appropriators, but my eyes glaze over instead of getting worked up over this discretionary minutia. The growing entitlement programs concern me a lot more than a new municipal swimming pool somewhere.
