The 21st Century stability of a Christian America governed by cultural elites

One can hardly hear one’s self think for the din of liberal Christians gleefully announcing the decline and fall of “Christian America” and conservative Catholics and Evangelicals rushing to agree.

That America has been Slouching towards Gomorrah at various speeds since at least the early 1960′s, as Robert Bork documents in his book, is hard to refute. So, what is the occasion for the latest iteration of that decade’s “God is Dead” declaration?

The occasion that has the Drive-By Media’s favorite Christian-bashing religious talkers abuzz is the 2009 America Religious Identification Survey (ARIS) which boldly declares that:

“…in 2008, Christians comprised 76 percent of U.S. adults, compared to about 77 percent in 2001…”

We covered the obvious statistical insignificance, and obvious media “fog” trumpeting a mere one percent change in our recent “Foghorn Leghorn: Losing our religion? Not“.

The foghorn device used by Newsweek’s John Meacham and others to trumpet Christian America’s end is the 1990 ARIS poll that showed 86% of U.S. adults identifying as Christians.

So, shouldn’t the “decline and fall” have been declared in 2001, after a 9% drop during the 90s to 77% or is the magic number for “endings” now the 76% in this year’s survey?

Of course, there is an agenda at work here, more evidence of which is revealed by Meacham’s and many others’ failure to cite the 2001 poll. How inconvenient that initial stories about the 24-page summary did mention it.

So, why didn’t the Drive-Bys declare God dead in 2001 and why, in 2009, when the real story is how remarkable has been the stability of Christianity in America during the first decade of the new millennium?

Could it be because in 2000 we had just elected an Evangelical Christian as President who opposed abortion and named Jesus Christ as his savior? Could it be because in 2008 we elected a man that considers the question of when a baby has the right to life is above his pay grade and who covers up the name of Jesus when speaking at Georgetown University?

The sociologist Peter Berger once remarked that if India is the most religious country in the world and Sweden the least, then the United States is a nation of Indians ruled by Swedes. I recently addressed why we are so ruled here, but for now, let’s review one of those elites.

Professing devout Roman Catholic, Washington Post columnist and liberal democrat, E.J. Dionne reveals the left’s agenda and the soul of his and President Barack Obama’s brand of Drive-By “social gospel” Christianity in a recent column declaring that:

“As a Christian, I find these figures neither alarming nor surprising.”

We’ll skip the usual media scoff that if something isn’t surprising that its not news, and skip to the more revealing confession that this Christian is not “alarmed” at a 10% drop in the number of American Christians since 1990. It still isn’t news, given that 9% of the drop occurred before 2001, and, sadly, it also isn’t news that a liberal Christian treats declines in the number of adherents to his faith with same attitude that one would acknowledge those that switch from Coke to Sprite.

Ten percent more may not inherit eternal life. Ten percent more consume less caffeine. Ho hum.

More Dionne soul revelations:

For nearly a quarter-century, Christianity in the United States has been defined to a large degree by the voices and the ideas of a very conservative strain of evangelical Christianity that, over time, became highly politicized and closely allied with a single political party.

These conservative Christians had as much right as any other group to bring their core concerns to politics. But in doing so, they narrowed the Christian message. They sometimes became apologists for politicians whose behavior and attitudes could not easily be called Christian.

So, for liberal Dionne, the decline in the number of Bible Believers is just fine if it means a return to a time when conservative Christians stand mute in the face of unelected judges’ re-writing the Constitution to legalize abortion, ban God from the public square and treat the utterance of his name as an obscenity in public schools.

But I thought Dionne was a Christian? Couldn’t the decline in the number of Christians also mean a decline in his brand of Christianity? Obviously he doesn’t think so, and that says a lot more about his faith than any foggy notion about who “politicized” religion.

And as to the notion of being apologists for unchristian behavior and attitudes, are we to judge such behavior less severely when committed by non-Christians or liberal Christians who have a harder time committing the sin of hypocrisy given their lack of standards? Yet, didn’t Bill Clinton tote a Bible to church on Sunday, but I digress.

Dionne continues:

Religion is always corrupted when it gets too close to political power. It’s possible to win a precinct caucus and lose your soul, to mistake political victory for salvation itself.

It is this approach to Christianity that is decidedly in decline, thank God, in part because conservative Christians themselves are rediscovering the Church’s mission to the poor, the sick, the strangers and the outcasts. This augurs new life, not decay.

Dionne speaks of losing souls while chastising the religious right, in the same breath that is “not alarmed” at a 10% drop in Christian believers? Maybe his concern is for “souls” that favor “choice” over life rather than souls seeking life after death?

Then Dionne slanders the Christian Church when he suggests conservative Christians needed to “re-discover” the Church’s mission to the poor, the sick, the strangers and the outcasts.

Get thee behind me Satan! Figuratively speaking only, as Dionne is sweet, yet ignorant man who means well. But, surely Dionne is not so ignorant of all the charitable work done by his own pro-life, anti-gay marriage church or that Southern Baptists trail only the Red Cross and Salvation Army in worldwide disaster relief.

Dionne advances a hideous 40-year old lie that conservatives don’t care about the poor, when all he can point to is our opposition to expanding the welfare state. What he cannot point to is any effort by the GOP to render asunder what President Reagan called the “safety net for the truly needy.”

Moreover, they can’t refute the fact that conservative tax and regulation cut policies produced results in the 60s, and the 80s-2006 that raised standard of living of all Americans, especially the poor. Finally, Dionne can’t deny that welfare reform worked, yet his President and party just killed President Clinton’s greatest achievement (with Newt’s prodding) in the non-stimulus bill.

No, Dionne, the mission to help the poor is why many of us Christians left the Democratic party for the GOP. We tired of liberals like you misquoting Jesus to justify class warfare that hurt the poor but made you feel better, Much as we tire of Obama’s scoffing at Scripture to suggest that America’s history can’t withstand the scrutiny of the Sermon on the Mount.

More on that in a later column, but in the meantime why don’t you consult the former slaves of the USSR and the liberations of WWII and see if maybe the U.S. military of a more Christian nation was the greatest peacemaker in recent history that Nobel failed to prize.

And while you celebrate American Christian decline, albeit ten years late, you might review the emergent church in America as well as Phillip Jenkins’ “The Next Christendom” and ponder how these supposed politically obcessed evangelicals managed a “Go ye” mission that has the faith growing by leaps and bounds, especially in Latin America, from whence most of our population growth is coming over the next two decades.

"Devout Roman Catholic"- I don't think so...

penguin2 (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 10:08AM EST (link)

In fact, I’m hard pressed to even call the guy a Christian, but not for me to judge. In reality, it seems he has put politics above religion. His statements are about furthering his political agenda.

Nice diary, gamecock, I had forgotten the “God is Dead” signs of that era. They have been trying to tell us that for a long time. They are frustrated we won’t just roll over and die.

I liked your comment about the “U.S. military of a Christian nation was the greatest peacemaker in recent history.” While the military has had to fight wars, they bring a humanity to battlegrounds that I believe is unmatched. Just read the accounts of their horror when they liberated the concentrations camps of WWII.

We don’t have a soul meter to judge whether a person is born again, so i don’t try. I just have different definitions of “Christian”, and Dionne and Meacham claim to be same.

And I certainly do know people that put politics over faith.

Dionne almost had it right

pilgrim (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 11:09AM EST (link)

He should have written a shorter sentence about conservative Christians.
They sometimes became apologists for politicians period. I think there is more of a change of strategy than a change of heart with respect to the true Christian conservatives who were with Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority movement. They realize that the politicians who they helped to elect and occupy a residency in DC have simply been playing much too nice with their political opponents in DC. They are finished with apologizing for those folks lack of fighting spirit, and are engaged in educating voters and fellow Christians to proudly stand up and fight for what they believe in instead of become apologists for politicians in DC with an R after their name.

Who is "they", because Dionne's purpose is to discredit Christian conservatism

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 12:50PM EST (link)

and to have the religious right blamed for GOP losses so as to cement a permanent liberal majority by getting us to get out of the political process.

Maybe some figureheads that the Drive-bys propped up were found to have feet of clay, just as everyone and members of every group, whether religious or secular does, but all we can do is vote for those that share our values and promise to vote those values.

That some have not does not mean most of “they” are apologists.

Moreover, elections are about choices, and if one were to resort to voting “the man”, we ended up empowering the left via blue dawgs that are drawl and that’s all when it comes to our values and principles that are 100 times worse than the R’s.

I’m sure you understand that our best hope politically is to reinvigorate the GOP.

Finally, I used this column and a few others to try and encourage my Sunday School class to day, to not be discouraged by the false reports now being used by the media and that too many conservatives haven’t refuted.

The fact is that we are much better off in the culture war than we would have been had not Christian conservatives gotten involved. And we did not fall down in our evangelistic mission either, as I documented.

Do we have to hold our elected Rs accountable. Of course.

But let’s not let leftist memes that are lies be used to discourage our people.

In my post I did not use a leftist meme. I did not say we Christians should not have gotten involved. I did not say Christians have fallen down in our evangelistic mission. I did not say most Christians are apologists for politicians in DC with an R after their name.

What I did say is that some Christians became apologists for politicians in DC (with R after their name) after their votes and actions were contrary to these Christians’ values. And this persistent cuss stands on this narrow point, and does not appreciate it being expanded into something that is not.

There is some truth in what Dionne says on this subject however GC

My reaction when I read what Dinne said on this subject was to shrug my shoulders because there is an element of truth in it…

I am one that’s put to much faith in Party and slept through the last 8 years because we had one of our own in the White House. I slept while the Republican Congresses of the 90s and 00s thumbed their noses at GOD’s command to be good stewards of the blessings he has bestowed upon us.

I agree a Reinvigorated GOP is our best hope going forward…but we’ll be making a mistake if we continue to be wedded to the party with no preconditions and with no regard for their taking us for granted and ignoring us at every turn.

We should never concede on the notion of "christian" = "socialist"

Next93 (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 12:42PM EST (link)

I’m not at all convinced that Jesus would approve of the welfare state. He was pretty specific on that whole “render unto Cesar” thing. It may be fashionable in certain circles to paint Him as a socialist, but I think that misses the point, and conservatives had better be ready to counter that line of thinking if they want to survive.

The implementation of mandatory “charitable” giving blurs (at best) the spiritual benefit to the one doing the giving. It’s one thing to choose to help the poor, it’s quite another comply with the orders of politicians who have decided that other people are more deserving of the money you’ve earned. If there’s no spiritual benefit in the act, then the whole Judeo-Christian notion of charity goes out the window, and all that’s left is a cynical attempt to pay for the votes of the poor by picking the pockets of those who aren’t poor (or, as the Democrats would call them “The Rich”).

{kowalski} And a question for our "liberal Christian" friends:

Next93 (Diary) Sunday, April 26th at 12:49PM EST (link)

Just out of curiosity, if it’s unAmerican to want the government to impose Judeo-Christan values in the area of sexual morality (gay marriage, abortion, anti-sodomy laws, dmoestic partner benefits), why is it ok to impose the Judeo-Christian notion of Charity by way of the welfare state?

Obama was The One in 2008.

the NT encourages young women to marry

mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 10:05AM EST (link)

we sure don’t see that with any churches promoting socialism today. I’m not LDS but that is the only place I’ve seen a real emphasis on marriage and traditional family life as an answer to many problems including the poverty from being a young single parent. In every other church I have seen they encourage independence from a man, it’s almost this non-s**ual type of l**bian movement that is also anti-man where single mothers should join together and make it in the world. I’m not joking about this and have seen it over and over again.
The NT is also clear that families should support their own family first. I am sure they did not have in mind the kind of things we see today where people have an entitlement mentality and we even have healthy young men not working.

Who Says that the Welfare State is Christian?

papalee Tuesday, April 28th at 4:52PM EST (link)

It certainly can’t be squared with the New Testament, the Catholic fathers and earliest bishops of the Benedictine Rule. Christian Socialism probably began with Thomas More’s Utopia, but those who settle both Jamestown and Plymouth found that its ideas didn’t work in practice. They still don’t, no matter how much of your own or other’s money you throw at them.

It's Dionne's Christianity that is in decline...

AceInTX (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 8:52AM EST (link)

as the mainline churches have become more and more controlled by liberal ideologies the Conservative Bible believing Church has grown. Dionne’s rant reads more like wishful thinking and twisting facts to fit a false narrative than anything based on any remote facts.

What burns my britches about his comments about caring for the poor and needy is that I guarantee you he or most of the compassion pimps in both parties have never tithed 10% of their income to their churches in one year let alone on a consistent and annual basis. Not a single one of them have worked in a soup kitchen beyond the photo op they can get out of it and not a single one of them have visited homeless shelters, rehab centers, prisons or anything else. They’ve never gone door to door or shared the plan of salvation with their friends and family let alone their neighbor who they wave to each day coming and going from work but don’t know and could care less about. They’ve never checked with their 80 year old neighbor across the street to see if he needs grocieries or a ride to the store.

charity has become "centralized" too

mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 10:58AM EST (link)

Even people in the church do not help someone, they “refer” someone. In many cities church donate to a central charity and that is where they send people. Some of this lack of involvement is a result of that.
ACE I agree with you, I can’t tell you how much it upsets me when there is an email or discussion about where someone can go for help. I mean why not us all give what we can for that person and solve their problem and let them get on with their life. I see this in good Christian people too it’s not just the hypocrites that don’t tithe like you talk about. I see the same thing, very little responsibility as far as making sure your old neighbor has her prescriptions or ride to the doctor. It’s really sad, I also think being affluent has blinded some people and they just send someone to a centralized charity or government instead of doing something themselves.

m2oneS, your word "affluent" nailed it!

penguin2 (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 12:08PM EST (link)

Affluence creates these conditions. It is a sort of an irony that occurs. Consider the immigrant waves that came from Europe. Yes, they lived in crowded tenements, large extended families; but they stayed together and helped each other. When compatriots from their home countries arrived, friend of a friend, etc. they were found jobs and sponsored and so on. As Americans gained wealth and our standard of living across the board rose, a distancing occurred in the family and the connection to the old country culture-which had sustained them.
Decades later we are a society of strangers and look for support from outside sources. Somewhere along the line the government has become our “family.” The breakup of the nuclear and extended family has been a prime mover in the breaking of the bonds of caring and charity that hold us together. Recently, I saw an article “bemoaning” the fact that the economic downturn had caused children to stay home longer or even return home. Are we all living such selfish lives that that should be a bad thing? Adversity and bad times bring us together, society may need some of that to reconnect to each other.

Of course I’m not against wealth, I just know that there have been adverse societal effects. The growth of government only enables this to worsen.

In general, people

johnminehan (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 11:37AM EST (link)

do tend, from my observations, to be demonstrably less formally religious than in earlier days. Many people identify themselves as being “spiritual” rather than “religious,” for example.

The big change in the data set since 2001 is that more people now openly define themselves as “atheists” or “agnostics,” rather than as “unchurched” or as a member of whatever faith they were raised in. Disbelief is the fastest growing religion in the United States. Additionally, many more people start as one faith and join another. Faith qua faith appears to be less important than the search for meaning and for something in which to believe.

It is difficult to project what these changes mean, however. By the end of the 18th Century, changes in the Congregationalist faith that lead to the Unitarian and Universalist faiths emerging were making it likely that the US would be a predominantly Deist/Unitarian nation. However, Methodist and Baptist immigration from England and later Catholic, Jewish and Orthodox Christian immigration from other parts of Europe and the Middle East changed this pattern.

As Chou En Li said to Nixon about the significance of the French Revolution in 1972, “It is too early to tell.”

But we don’t have to be anecdotal about this. There own poll shows only a 1% drop since 2001.

The real news from the poll is that there has been little change since 2001,
