It is fitting that if we are to celebrate just one President that it be the Father of our Country, without whose leadership and character there would be no Shining City on a Hill.
And yes, today’s federal holiday is still, and always has been, declared in federal law, as Washington’s Birthday, not any so-called amorphous “President’s Day” requiring celebrations of 43 Presidential oath takers:
TITLE 5 > PART III > Subpart E > CHAPTER 61 > SUBCHAPTER I > § 6103. Holidays
The following are legal public holidays:
New Year’s Day, January 1.
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., the third Monday in January.
Washington’s Birthday, the third Monday in February.
Memorial Day, the last Monday in May.
Independence Day, July 4.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September.
Columbus Day, the second Monday in October.
Veterans Day, November 11.
Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November.
Christmas Day, December 25.
This is the law.
So why do most calendars and so many people refer to this day as “Presidents Day“?
In 1968, Congress passed the Monday Holidays Act, which moved the official observance of Washington’s birthday from Feb. 22 to the third Monday in February. Some reformers had wanted to change the name of the holiday as well, to Presidents’ Day, in honor of both Lincoln and Washington, but that proposal was rejected by Congress, and the holiday remained officially Washington’s Birthday.
Nevertheless, there was a popular misconception that the day had been officially renamed…While the name change has never been authorized by Congress, it has gained a strong hold on the public consciousness, and is generally used on calendars, in advertising, and even by many government agencies. There have been attempts to introduce legislation requiring federal agencies to call the day Washington’s Birthday, but these have never gotten very far. No matter what’s in the law books, the popular usage is now well established…
Reformers? Code word for the liberals that have been trashing American history as a tragedy and the Founding Fathers as mere slave owners for the past 40 years.
Their propaganda in academia and media is the reason for the so-called “strong hold” of the false name of the holiday on the public consciousness. The liberal that wrote the above let’s her guard down when she mentions her dismissal of the law. Their contempt for the real America and the Founders extends to the framers of the highest law that is the U.S. Constitution, so why would they have any respect for a “mere” statute? The only “law” they respect are those made up by activist judges that violate their Oath to uphold the Constitution.
General George Washington watched thousands fall on the battlefield so that we could ordain and establish self government based on the rule of law as opposed to the tyrannies of the rule of men, whether they be Kings, Despots or Judicial Oligarchs. He nearly lost his life many times leading Revolutionary War battles. As our first President he astounded the world by peacefully giving up power to his successor.
Yet, all the “reformers” care to recall is that he was a slaveowner. Yes, he was a slaveowner, but he fathered a nation that put slavery on the path to destruction and which has freed more of humanity from tyranny than in all of human history. Ironically, many of the so-called reformers that would have us celebrate James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson and Richard Nixon, also conveniently looked the other way when evaluating the greatest enslavers and murderers of humanity in the Soviet Union and Red China.
The true reformer was the man whose birth we celebrate today. The man who admitted chopping down a cherry tree and went on to chop down the barriers to Liberty so that men could be truly free.

In the children’s biography section, black history month took over. There were books about W.E. DuBois, George Washington Carver, Martin Luther King Jr., and JFK of all people (and others I can’t remember). But not one little smell of a George Washington book.
Do you hear me people? There was not a biography of George Washington at the library!!! What a pathetic note. We have gone off the rails and now the only question is: How many of us are going to die in the wreck?

Jack_Savage (Diary) Monday, February 16th at 5:10PM EST (link)And so we all will be more enlightened, I am sharing the 10 Ways To Resolve Conflict from their website, with some comments added. This is surely the foundation for Obama’s foreign policy:
10 Ways to Resolve Conflicts
1. Listen more. Talk less. It helps you understand the other person’s point of view
For example, King George might actually NEED all those taxes.
2. Ask when you want something. Making demands only makes things worse.
Especially when demanding someone give up nuclear weapons. Not a good idea at all.
3. Focus on the problem, not the person. It’s the only way to solve a disagreement.
Hugo Chavez is not a bad person, he has simply made some bad choices.
4. Always deal with the problem at hand. Never bring up old issues or resentments.
Iranian Hostage Crisis? What Iranian Hostage Crisis? Ohhhhh, THAT one – heck, we’ve put that behind us!
5. Take responsibility for your part in the conflicts. Your view may not be completely right either.
For example, we could try the women as personal property thing. It might work for us.
6. Express your feelings without blaming the other person. Blame never solves anything.
About flying those planes into buildings? Sorry we blamed you Osama.
7. Always talk things out. Never use physical force to express your anger.
Maybe we could meet you in the cave – say 4:30? Does that work for you?
8. Choose your words carefully. Once a word is spoken it cannot be taken back.
Axis of Evil? I mean, does that kind of talk solve anything?
9. Look for a solution that is agreeable to both parties. If one person isn’t satisfied, the problem isn’t solved.
OK, OK – you can point the missiles at us. We didn’t realize it was that important,
10. Step back and put the problem into perspective. A problem you have today may not seem so bad tomorrow.
You know, you’re right. All those people who lost loved ones on 9/11 seem to be doing OK – let’s just call it even.
Found it!

Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. Explain that they have the remarkable
opportunity to reconstruct history. They are going to choose a particular event in history
from the following list (or think up one of their own that was a significant national or
world crisis or a moral dilemma), and research the surrounding events. Next, they will

2. The Civil War

5. The Mexican Revolution

historical background
Gyorc Nacain Monday, February 16th at 1:08PM EST (link)Here is what happened according to Snopes. Apparently it started with a desire to give people more three-day weekends, so they moved the day to always be on Monday. It is Washington’s Birthday as a federal holiday, but apparently its name and occurrence are different in different states, and states’ names for holidays is where “Presidents Day” got its momentum. And a bill was introduced in 2001 to force states to call it “Washington’s Birthday” but it died in subcommittee.
I don’t see whats wrong about changing a holiday for celebrating Washington’s birthday to one celebrating both Washington’s and Lincoln’s Birthday. I mean, if there was one guy who would share a holiday with Washington it would be Lincoln, right? (I mean apart from Hakeem Olajuwon or Earl Campbell.)
Also apparently the way the calendar works “Washington’s Birthday” will never actually fall on Washington’s Birthday. Because that makes total sense…
NO! NO and Absolutely NO!

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 12:35PM EST (link)The fact is that the federal holiday was NEVER changed, as I cite. Ta-Nehisi Coates on Black History Month...
Gyorc Nacain Monday, February 16th at 5:10PM EST (link)…here* is what he said. I guess I agree to an extent. And also the idea of there being “black history” and “white history” doesn’t really make sense, it is all way too interconnected and “black history” is American history, as is “white history”. But it’s not like there are chunks of “white history” that are being ignored and need to have their own month. My guess is that this was the case for “black history” once, but that this has been corrected and “black history month” is now not needed.

Why Does This Author Ignore State Law?
denisjh Tuesday, February 17th at 5:38AM EST (link)Typical Republican liberal. he looks up the Federal law and ignores the sovereign states. This is from Wikipedia:
approximately a dozen state governments have officially renamed their Washington’s Birthday observances as “Presidents Day”, “Washington and Lincoln Day”, or other such designations. However, “Presidents Day” is not always an all-inclusive term.
In Massachusetts, while the state officially celebrates “Washington’s Birthday,” state law also prescribes that the governor issue an annual Presidents Day proclamation honoring the presidents that have come from Massachusetts: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Calvin Coolidge, and John F. Kennedy.[2] (Coolidge, the only one born outside of Massachusetts, spent his entire political career before the vice presidency there. George H. W. Bush, on the other hand, was born in Massachusetts, but has spent most of his life elsewhere.)
Alabama uniquely observes the day as “Washington and Jefferson Day”, even though Jefferson’s birthday was in April.[3]
In New Jersey, Connecticut and Illinois, while Washington’s Birthday is a federal holiday, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is still a state holiday, falling on February 12 regardless of the day of the week.
In California, Lincoln’s Birthday is also a legal state holiday, however, observance is frequently moved to the Monday or Friday occurring closest to February 12. When Lincoln’s Birthday is observed on the Friday preceding Washington’s Birthday, the resultant four-day weekend is commonly called “Presidents’ Day Weekend”, particularly by retailers in their sale advertisements.
In Washington’s home state of Virginia the holiday is legally known as “George Washington Day.”

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 12:31PM EST (link)Yes, states were a part of the cultural change with Lincoln being at the center as well, but that is a SUBSET of my point, i.e. that the left wanted to de-emphasize Washington and the Founders in favor of Lincoln.

Lincoln and Washington got lumped together for MLK day
kyle8 (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 7:06AM EST (link)I don’t really care much, I suppose it is OK to give Black Americans the MLK day because it makes sense to try to draw together and celebrate the civil rights movement.
Washington’s indispensable contributions are not discussed enough.
As for Lincoln. He gets way too much credit. Yes he held the union together, He did that by fighting an undoubtedly illegal war killing hundreds of thousands of people (though the constitution made no provision for secession the vast majority of thought at the time was that it was a legal remedy)
He only freed the slaves in the areas in which he had no current jurisdiction and only as a means to economically further the war effort. And all the crap about domestic oppression that the left ascribed to G W Bush? Lincoln really did that.
The result of this struggle was a good thing because we stayed a unified nation and slavery was discontinued. But that does not mean that his actions should be excused. None of us know how history would have unfolded if there had been no war.
My own guess is that slavery would have ended gradually because it was increasingly archaic and unprofitable as mechanization took hold. Furthermore, as the south continued to decline economically, relative the north, there would have been increasing pressure for a reunification.

Kyle, "illegal" war is a meaningless phrase of the left
Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Tuesday, February 17th at 12:30PM EST (link)Keeping the union together is HUGE, essential even. Don’t know how one could overstate the importance of keeping the union together.
And MLK’s achievements were for ALL Americans, regardless of race.
What ifs about slavery sans war are really irrelevant now.

Mike DeVine’s Examiner.com, Charlotte Observer and The Minority Report columns
“One man with courage makes a majority.” – Andrew Jackson
NO I absolutely do not agree
kyle8 (Diary) Wednesday, February 18th at 7:31AM EST (link)1) there is such a thing as an illegal war in a republic ruled by laws. I am not talking about any international law, I am talking about violating your own constitution to wage war.
2) keeping the union together was maybe huge but not more important in my mind to actually obeying your own laws and not killing 600,00+ people.
3) The civil rights movement was for all Americans but MLK Day was given to Black Americans as a sop.
4) Talk about alternatives in history is VERY important. We are given a historical view of the utter necessity of the civil war when just a little bit of thought will show you that it was not inevitable and not necessary. The civil war represented an utter Failure of the people at the time on both sides. A failure to come to any valid and legitimate compromise or a plan for peace after the secession.
