but I understand your desire to want to appear "objective".... just (again) think you fall into the Democrat dupe (bait-and-switch) trap unless you at least call it "TAX SHIFTING" if you still object to the "WELFARE" definition.

OK?

Take care my friend....

Yes, you are right it gets piled in the same place and just wasted.... so what.... You miss the point that with Democrats it always starts out as one thing then deteriorates into another....

It is a separate TAX for a separate stated purpose and is DEDUCTED separately.... and the Fact that it is still all thrown in (still many morons out there don't get it) is part of that teachable moment.... If that Tax is to be "OFFSET" or "RELIEF" provided from it must be that specific Tax that is cut - not pretending it is OK to TAX SHIFT (yet another form of REDISTRIBUTION)....

The Fact that it is a separate Deduction matters immensely.... I don't give a darn what pile it is put into it is STILL identified and Social Security demagogued every time any attempts to reform it... AND YOU KNOW THAT! The Democrats get away with the BS of spending those funds under the false premise of INVESTMENT which is nothing more than just plain old government Spending (read: waste) and the SS system left with the IOU's that will be covered by the General Fund (as you correctly state, and we all know, yet still some idiots out there don't grasp - especially the younger minds of mush freshly out the Indoctrination Factories that pass as Education centers across the Nation and why the "youth" always tends to vote the JackAzz logo/label)...

If a TAX CUT is to be given... it MUST be given to the ACTUAL TAX it is meant to relieve.... Why you want to continue to give cover to Democrats that just want to HAND OUT MONEY (and they do so KNOWING and wanting it to go to people who PAY NO FEDERAL INCOME TAX AND VERY LITTLE OTHER TAX) without it having any specifics..... they desire to keep those non-specific so they can avoid the accountability that some people who work part-time will receive more than they pay in via Federal Taxes in total.....

If people NOT PAYING FEDERAL INCOME TAX ALSO NEED FICA RELIEF then that is SPECIFICALLY AND ONLY where they should get the relief and EVERYONE ELSE SHOULD ALSO RECEIVE THE SAME RELIEF!

If Democrats want to state they want to help people cause they still pay Sales Taxes or Property Taxes (STATES ISSUES), which is quietly one of the things they are looking to SUBSIDIZE under the guise of the general term "TAX CUTS" (that, again, is TAX SHIFT/REDISTRIBUTION) they should legislate the specific targeted relief....

YOU ARE DEFENDING LAZY LEGISTLATION TACTICS and further bast---ization of the language. We cannot continue to allow Democrats to warp the definition of terms.... Spending as "Investments" that provide NO RETURNS.... Federal WELFARE (if one penny goes to any one individual above what they payed in - that makes it a Welfare/redistribution program and is only the beginning of the process of increasing WELFARE) programs called TAX CUTS......etc....

It is real simple... you want to support further tax relief (and we all would support REAL Tax relief to those Paying Taxes) to "the Poor" then support the reduction of FICA taxes.... Make the first $10,000 in wages for EVERYONE exempt from the FICA tax (employee portion, some would still be paid on the persons behalf via the employer portion)..... STOP BEING LAZY LIKE A DEMOCRAT! Why the heck is it so darn difficult for you to require SPECIFICS? Stop being a McCain GC! ;-)

And, I'm done bothering with this discussion... because you just won't abandon your support for this "tactic" of Tax Shifts/Redistribution (at best - even if it is just redistribution of one tax to cover another... still NOT ACCEPTABLE - Cut the darn other Tax you CLAIM to be "needing" to redistribute one tax to cover the other) and/or False identification (at worse)....

Your "desire" to appear to the masses as "OPEN" and/or a moderate so to garner their trust in reading and hopefully shape/change some minds on the left is irritating to us and transparent to most those on the Left.... It is McCainism! Sorry to be so harsh, but I like ya personally and so I'm gonna be honest with you! I believe you "mean well".... but DEMOCRATS/LIBERALS also think they "mean well" and look what it gets the country ;-) The country needs "Straight Talk" and I mean real straight talk... plain talk.... honest talk... calling things what they are..... Cutting actual specific Tax Rates not playing Tax Shift games that further muddy the waters and leave the masses that don't pay attention still suseptable to the Democrat bait-and-switch BS games.... not the McCain "Straight Talk" which was just more double-talk!

But the fact is that FICA is thrown into the same pot and soc sec recipients get paid thru currently collected funds from both sources.

a rose by any other name...

Now that is a lesson worth teaching!

I am assuming you are addressing this to me given that it is not a reply to this comment, but can't imagine why and certainly can't imagine why you would deign to instruct me on the fictions of the far left, given that I have been instructing others on that since before you were out of puberty!

smile

But in case it is addressed to me and you are having a bad day and are so late to this post, I will re-write the column!

smile

This refers, as stated in my column, to Obama's plan. That plan is for $500-1000 tax refunds (its rather vague, which is part of the problem with calling it welfare) to 95% of Americans. My hero and leader Rush and many conservatives in the chattering class and many elected republicans have, recently, and all during the campaign, esp incl McCain, said that tax cuts to peoplel that don't pay "federal income taxes" is "welfare."

I object to that blanket characterization given that only people that work get checks and that the overwhelming majority of workers pay more than $500-1000 in FICA taxes, which is not kept is lock box, and so are federal taxes.

And, politically, it is an insult to tell workers paying their own way that they are on welfare.

Step 1) Make outrageous $1 trillion spending proposal

Step 2) Back off to
              a) $475 billion spending bill that must be renewed to be continued thereafter
              b) $300 billion tax relief that must be renewed to be continued thereafter

Step 3) Watch opponents agree to step 2 proposal that they never would have gone for in absence of Step 1)

Step 4) Let Governmental Mother Nature take over to renew the spending but not the tax relef

True, Obama won't "Shoot the Moon" for an immediate socialist state like Pelosi/Reid. While, case-by-case that seems to be a good thing, in aggregate I'm not so sure, as he may be more effective in moving the goal posts.

Who's calling what plan 'welfare' now?

Does this refer to EITC or what?

P.S. When you use terms like 'middle class' you feed into socialism. America has no "classes." That's a fiction of the far left, who want to turn Americans of different wealth levels against each other.

the economy - and that is through tax cuts. Stimulus checks are generally saved, or wasted - and who's to say that all of that money won't be spent on foreign goods?

I say, that if they really want to stimulate the economy - there are three things they can do:

Cut the corporate tax rate on all corporations to zero, for a period of at least a year (preferably FOREVER). It should become a major educational point that corporations don't pay taxes - their customers do. This will draw capital into the country in Billions, perhaps Trillions.

Cut the Capitol Gains taxes to zero, for a period of at least a year (preferably FOREVER). Once again, money will go where it can return the best. You can't get much better in this world than to start your profit with the first cent!

Anyone in the armed services should not have to pay one dime in taxes. For each year that a service person serves they should have an additional year that they do not have to pay taxes after they leave the military. (It just seems to be a really great incentive, while also cutting down on a strange circle: we pay the government to pay our soldiers . . . who pay the government to . . . )

Don't know if these would truly help or not - just seems that they would. I am not a financial guru (but, hey, it doesn't seem like any of the bozo's leading this circus are either.)

Cut the Capitol Gains taxes to zero, for a period of at least a year (preferably FOREVER). Once again, money will go where it can return the best. You can’t get much better in this world than to start your profit with the first cent!

Anyone in the armed services should not have to pay one dime in taxes. For each year that a service person serves they should have an additional year that they do not have to pay taxes after they leave the military. (It just seems to be a really great incentive, while also cutting down on a strange circle: we pay the government to pay our soldiers . . . who pay the government to . . . )

Don’t know if these would truly help or not – just seems that they would. I am not a financial guru (but, hey, it doesn’t seem like any of the bozo’s leading this circus are either.)

The discussion must be specific and 100% truthful, and if pointing out anything given without it having been paid in is WELFARE and I do NOT have a problem with it being properly called such....

to the great unwashed.... The Taxes are DIFFERENT and SEPERATE .... the General Term Federal Tax Cut CANNOT be allowed to apply.... Tax Cuts must specifically be properly labeled and address the specific Taxes they are intended to provide a relief of.... allowing Democrats to label anything/everything as "Federal Tax Cut" (which to MANY) means INCOME TAX.....

The discussion must be specific and 100% truthful, and if pointing out anything given without it having been paid in is WELFARE I do NOT have a problem with... It MUST be part of the discussion to FORCE the proper terminology be used that if the Democrats want to relieve PAYROLL TAXES then they can and should DO JUST THAT not disguise it and use the GENERAL term to allow generic numbers be used that WILL RESULT IN SOME COLLECTING WELFARE ABOVE/BEYOND ANY/ALL PAYROLL TAXES THEY PAY IN A YEAR!!!!

Further.... If they are going to finally admit to saying that PAYROLL TAXES should be relieved and thereby SOCIAL SECURITY and/or MEDICARE "JEAPORDIZED" (always their dire bs warning) it must be truthfully put forth the SOME REFORM CAN INDEED BE MADE TO THOSE SYSTEMS!!!

This is a teachable moment GC... that you seem to allow the great unwashed from having to learn and letting Democrats off the hook and continuing to make more PC definitions ..... REDISTRIBUTION OF FEDERAL GENERAL TAX FUNDS (INCOME TAXES) TO COVER SOME PAYROLL TAXES IS A TAX SHIFT at best AND/OR WELFARE at its worse.

while I'm tickled discussion of "real" tax cuts may replace the Welfare disguised as Tax cuts to pass the great unwashed general public... without making the Bush tax cuts (or some subset of them) permanent the people we know that really need to start spending/investing are NOT going to do so because of the continued pathetic uncertainty of what assets/earnings are or are not going to be Taxed and what levels in the future.... It is all Political theater... Of course, I'm not completely against some "theater" if it is all we are going to get in way of attempting to reach the minuscule pea brains of the great unwashed of our fellow Americans dumb enough to vote Liberal/Socialist/Democrats to this degree of Power.... It is nice to FINALLY get Democrats, on the record, of at least pretending to care about Tax Cuts and that they are the REAL way to stimulate the Economy short and long term..... It would be nice if people would finally also wake up to that ADMISSION that WE (Conservatives) have been right on this issue forever and shift back to supporting us before it is too late....
