do realize (I hope) that even though Hamas didn’t receive unanimous support (though they did receive a majority) in the most recent elections, their next closest (and as far as I know, only) competition, Fatah, was just as murderously anti-Israeli as Hamas?

So there are really very, very few barbers. Mostly Pizza Hut bombers.

should I have for some reason wound up in a German household in WWII. Probably would have had some cute kids, the haus frau, probably even one set of grandparents. We’d have gone to church, gone to work, made the meals, gone to the bomb shelters together, and probably had this nice, bonding human experience. And I just wouldn’t have looked at that picture on the mantle or piano of the guy in the black uniform with the skulls on the collar.

But anyone who has been around (in the Middle East or not) for just the past decade can see how their “smart long-term” appeasement strategy has worked out for them so far.

How has the Republican’s appeasement (reaching-across the aisle) strategy over the past decade been working out for us?

I don’t think that in Germany or in Japan or in Iraq it was just the US military that stopped the continued warfare and terrorist behavior.

I believe that it came after. If we had just pounded them until they surrendered – I don’t believe that their ‘hearts and minds’ would have changed one iota.

I believe that the change came when we, in essence, forced them to change their government, and then abide by our rules until they ‘got it’, and had more than half a chance of making a go at it on their own.

I don’t think that it will be any different with Hamas. Until the Israeli’s have them suing for peace – and then force a change of government on them that wants peace with Israel – and will fight against any groups that want to continue to fight Israel – will there be peace AND a change of hearts and minds.
