but I am not sure if it was won by 2007. Either way, Petraeus had it won when he took over, he even wrote about what he was going to do http://www.amazon.com/Marine-Corps-Counterinsurgency-Field-Manual/dp/0226841510/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231029176&sr=8-2

I read his book, that magnificent bastard!

Anyway, you made an excellent list with well thought out picks.

see my comment above

Doc, I can't disagree because I think that almost all years

and I have voted this way, the armed forces and their commander in chief since Bush have deserved this award and you will see that I put Petraeus and Bush as close runner ups.

But, I think they had this war won in 2007, so, I chose Paulson on econ impact.

So, I basically agree with you/

I would ask why Franklin Raines is not sitting in a jail cell.

If YOU stole 50 million , the Feds would not just let YOU give it back.

Have a Happy and Blessed New Year.

I get it. It's your gamecock (real chicken) that you're referring to, and not that writer named Gamecock whose diaries have always landed in the Rec'd Section. Last time I looked, that writer has never been a "chicken" in his commentaries.

As for the rest, it's just my "too much beer" way of rewording what you have said.

Cheers!

Republican responsibility for avoidable decisions/policies:

- Chris Cox's 2004 rule change to allow investment banks
to double leverage from 17-1 to 35-1
- Allowing AIG to issue a gazillion credit default swaps without hedging
- To a lesser degree, the Cox 2005 ruling to allow investment banks to self-regulate
(It sounds bad, but in practice realize that the SEC vs the investment banks in a profitable enviroment is like the freshmen team versus the varsity)

Democratic responsibility for avoidable decisions/policies:

- Allow Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to operate as the two largest hedge funds out there.
-For years, warnings had been issued as to the systematic risks posed by Fannie/Freddie (including by Larry Summers during the Clinton years).
-Yet following Accounting Fraud, in which the two had cooked the books to the tune of billions of dollars, Democrats block Republican attempts to reign in the leverage of the Fannie & Freddie hedge funds.
-And when it comes to securitizing subprime mortgages, these two Democrat-favored institutions issued a full third of the subprime market.
-And how Fannie/Freddie could call themselves advocates of "affordable housing" while they were championing a price bubble by adding "buy at any cost" subprime borrowers to the demand side is beyond me.

Yes, McCain's campaign advisor had accepted fees from Fannie/Freddie.
But true to McCain's character, he put his own interest of avoiding that explanation above the principles of conservatism.

And thus, we have a public that actually believes the Democrats would have done something different, in spite of their identical actions in their sphere of influence.

I've never "feared" the SoCons.

Heck, my mom is one of them.

It's more that I'd wish that they'd see that if adolescence is perpetual, they will never, ever get the adults they need to keep going indefinitely.

If you keep treating adults as adolescents, you will get adolescent adults.

That ain't good for anybody.

I don't pin all the blame on McCain, either. I don't think there is another serious primary contender that would have done anything different in his position. Coming from a guy who had McCain as his second-to-last choice.
