There are some folks in Tennessee who think Corker is grandstanding and is not really a conservative. Perhaps we trust but verify until more votes/issues will allow us to determine whether or not he is the real deal.

As I recall, not only was he in favor of amnesty, but he spoke out openly about how important it was. That’s what got me to wondering after seeing this wrong vote as well.

He’d certainly be an improvement over Sebelius!

The scores wouldn’t indicate he’s a liberal, but it does seem he gets caught out on some big issues and votes.

During the primary and the Amnesty Bill voting in 2007, he initially voted FOR it, then when it looked like it was going down to defeat, he rushed and changed his vote to against. And he’s been on the wrong side of some other big issues, IIRC.

While he was campaigning for President, he was for tax reform of some sort – maybe a flat tax.

I think he’s going to run for Governor of Kansas in 2010.

If it’s a loser, Reid has to vote against it so he can reintroduce it. If it had failed with 58 votes it meant they really had 59, and the 60th would have been Obama had he not resigned due to the Constitutional provision against holding both a Senate seat and the Office of the President-Elect seat.

It could be they were close to that mark but weren’t going to make it, so a couple of Dems voted no to play CYA with voters.

Voinovich might cry.

The Maine Twins – Don’t count on it.

Snarlin’ Arlen – Union sympathizer. DeMint saying don’t even count on Specter to support filibuster of EFCA (Card check).

Brownback – maybe. But don’t know what drives his support.
Bond – maybe. But from a state with Big 3 industry.
Lugar – maybe. Ditto.

Not that being from a Big 3 auto state is an excuse to abandon principle. But seems that’s an easy thing to do, judging from McCotter’s vote.

For some kind of phone or email campaign to reeducate them on principle:The 10 pro-bailout Republicans: Bond Brownback Collins Dole Domenici Lugar Snowe Specter Voinovich Warner. These were the ones that voted for this UAW grant … and we wonder why Lizzy Dole lost?

Not if McConnell and company are smart. If Reid doesn’t want to bring up any buissness today-Bring up the Corker amendment anyway. Yesterday was just a Cloture vote. Make them vote on the Corker amend, or refuse to do so. Make the UAW and their Dem lackeys own killing any compromise. That would defuse any media spin about how the Senate GOP is being ‘obstructionist’. Otherwise they will just come back in Jan with an ovewrwhelming majority and pass this crap anyway.

When you’re the underdog, you need to focus on the policy and the politics.

Understanding what they’re talking about isn’t high on the list of qualifications for a senator or representative, and sadly that’s even true about most Republicans in Congress. Judging by this proposal, Corker’s presence significantly raises the average IQ of the Senate.

On policy grounds it’s great. Alone amid the fuzzy make-it-up-as-we-go proposals floating around, this actually could save the failing auto companies if their idiot UAW & management go along, and without fleecing the taxpayers. Politically, it’s easy to explain and get popular support for.

Some guys are smart policy wonks, some are smart politicians. There aren’t many in Congress who are both, and Corker may prove himself to be one of the few.
