...We have to start making people realize that it's <i>bad</i> policy, no matter what their personal fortunes or moral code. "Wealth redistribution" doesn't do that.

being inaccurate, but I prefer 'penalizing work' as a phrase to describe our current tax code.

If I two billion dollars in munis, I'd pay no taxes but could live like Midas.

If I'm busting my hump trying to raise a family and pay for my parent's health care, I'm taxed to death.

Someone who is not already against the concept or someone who would be on the receieving end of the wealth is unlikely (in my view) to see the action as the "manufacture of poverty"

It's also kind of clumsy if you ask me. How about saying instead that wealth redistribution means that everyone ends up with an empty wallet and fifty pounds of government cheese. If that's the kind of equality that appeals to you then wealth distribution is your thing.

The point can be extended by asking people if they have ever bought shoes made by the government, and how they liked their government shoes. No shoes? Ask about government ipods instead. No ipods? Then let's think about the last time you actually got something from the government (other than a tax return, which was your own money coming back to you after being seized from you and forcibly borrowed by the government). Maybe it was the DMV. Remember that experience, with such polite workers, top notch service, a choice of styles in drivers licenses appropriate for everyone, in a pleasant environment, and quick and sensible tests based on a well-written manual. More likely by far, their last experience with the government ended with the government taking something away from them, while punishing them and making them feel abused and outraged in addition to poorer.

...because that's exactly what they are doing with programs like Welfare, Social Security, and the lost jobs and economic expansion due to high taxes and strict regulations.

Language and choice of words is VERY important, but "manufacturing poverty" is not the best way to explain the concept
