Wow! Mr. Obama (I’m trying to be respectful) has offended me once again. I really don’t see how any woman can not be offended by this. Governor Palin’s lipstick comment was in NO WAY offensive to anyone. All Obama is doing is showing what kind of sexist biggot he is. This is a glaring insult to all women. Democrat, Republican, or otherwise. How can his obviously strong-minded wife condone this type of comment? Anyone?

Hmm, can't say I agree

dpayton (Diary) Tuesday, September 9th at 8:11PM EST (link)

The whole “lipstick on a pig” word picture has been with us a long time, and Obama has used it before. Now, I would say it probably wasn’t the best one to use, given Palin’s joke in her convention speech, but still I really don’t think it was a personal attack. Perceptions being what they are, he should probably come up with another one.

But hey, Democrats, how does it feel to be on the receiving end of a sexism charge you believe to be invalid? Hopefully, the result of this election season is a sobering of the hysteria, that not every disagreement is a result of sexism, racism or homophobia.

Context

BuckeyesforMcCainPalin (Diary) Tuesday, September 9th at 8:26PM EST (link)

Everything in a speech like this is prepared beforehand. Do people think he just made this up on the spot? Of course not. They give prepared remarks in a venue like this. I think it’s quite clear from the context and from his body language that he was calling Palin a pig.

Even if he wasn’t, he’s an idiot beyond belief and should not be President because of it.

It's just a phrase

It’s like using the term Kool-Aid drinker. No one but people trying to invoke race(black people drink kool-aid! you racist!) take that as an out-of-whack phrase and that’s sort of how I feel about this.

Personally I think they’re stretching this one a bit.

I don’t really see this is an issue, but many do apparently. It was obviously taken as a reference to Palin, you can tell by the crowd reaction.

I don’t know. Obama is not smart sometimes.

ZootSuit (Diary) Tuesday, September 9th at 8:31PM EST (link)

I fail to see how his comment that, “You can put lipstick on a pig and it’s still a big” is sexist or insulting to women. Or a reference to Governor Palin. The idea (by the Right) that Obama’s comments are sexist makes absolutely no more sense than the idea (by the Left) that McCain’s “celebrity ad” with Briney Spears and Paris Hilton in it was racist.

Sarah Palin has become our Barack Obama and this election has become surreal.

by Ed Kalnins, a Pastor at Wasilla Assembly of God.

Dan Springer of Fox On The Scene talks about it here:

One of the pastors at the Wasilla Assembly of God has made controversial statements in the past. Ed Kalnins once preached that Alaska’s natural resource wealth will fulfill the state’s destiny of serving as a shelter for Christians at the end of the world. A staunch supporter of the Iraq war, Kalnins has described it as a battle for the very survival of Christianity. And in 2004 Kalnins told followers he questioned whether people who voted for Senator John Kerry could receive salvation. He has since apologized for the comment saying it was a poor attempt at humor. Nonetheless, many Obama supporters are trying to link Governor Palin to these and other fringe comments.

I agree that this is a good recommendation. But as a woman, I am offended by such comments. Aren’t Democrats supposed to be about equal rights and that kind of thing? What would happen if we started making black comments? How would Obama feel then?

Regarding McCain making a similar comment, it was made not about Hillary, but about her health care plan proposal. I would be just as offended if McCain were to have referred to Hillary as a Pig, but he didn’t.

Hey Mark

ZootSuit (Diary) Tuesday, September 9th at 9:40PM EST (link)

When Obama makes idiotic comments like him saying he would delay rescinding President Bush’s tax cuts on “wealthy” Americans if he becomes the next president but that he has no plans to extend the Bush tax cuts beyond their expiration date, yes, I make a big deal out of it.

When he says silly things like he will withdraw troops from Iraq but would put them back in if al Qaeda shows up in Iraq but then, as John McCain reminded him that al Qaeda is in Iraq (it’s called “al Qaeda in Iraq”), admits that al Qaeda is in Iraq, yes, I make fun of him.

When Obama gives a speech on race in Philadelphia that ends on a weird Marxist dialectic, yes, I make a big deal out of it.

Heck, just about anytime Barack Obama talks about his high-tax, big-spending Marxist policies I think a big deal should be made of it.

But when he makes an comment that, although I disagree with, somehow get’s misconstrued as sexist and a jab at Governor Palin — a comment or phrase that not only he but McCain, Cheney and others have used at very times; indeed, a very well-known phrase that is perfectly in line with the point he was trying to make (even as, again, I disagre with it) — then no, I really don’t thing much of it.

As I said before, calling Obama’s comments sexist makes about as much sense as calling McCain’s “celebrity ad” racist. Both sides are now playing the “I’m a victim” and “I’m offended” game.

I know the Libs are quoting McCain and Cheney making similar lipstick-on-a-pig comments, trying to make it look like the Obamessiah’s statement was as benign as theirs, but…

If Obama had made this comment the day before Palin’s speech, NO ONE would have a problem with it!

But this is so obviously referring to Gov Palin and her lipstick joke…and based on that, and the fish comment, and the flipping off of Hillary and other screw-ups, I have to say this was intentional…PROVING the guy has no judgment on how to zing a political opponent without stepping in it.

They already started on Palins hair

gensec (Diary) Tuesday, September 9th at 9:55PM EST (link)

The Boston Herald had a story last week Stylists to passe Sarah Palin: Let your hair down. Some “highlights”:

With her long, straight, often pinned-up locks, Palin looks one humid day away from fronting a Kiss cover band.

“It’s about 20 years out of date,” said Boston stylist Mario Russo of the Alaska governor’s ’do. “Which goes to show how off she might be on current events.”

“It gives me the impression that she just washed her hair, pays attention to the front and throws up the back in a bun,” said Belmont stylist Leon De Magistris.

“She’s disheveled. It’s way too long,” he added. “She needs a cut.”

In fact, some argue Palin might be a little too long in the tooth for such tresses, sparking another squabble: to cut or not to cut after hitting 40. Yes, long hair evokes youth, but long hair after 40 can flirt with desperation.

I will give the reporter credit for recounting Palin’s own remark on the topic:

Palin herself told Vogue magazine, “A reporter once asked me about it (her appearance) during the campaign, and I assured him I was trying to be as frumpy as I could by wearing my hair on top of my head and these schoolmarm glasses.”

Great response, even though (or should I say “especially because”) she’s way too hot to be remotely frumpy even if she tried.

SmilinJack Tuesday, September 9th at 10:10PM EST (link)

Funny how when the Republican candidate says it, it’s OK, but when Sen. Barack Obama says it he’s being offensive.

McCain himself used the exact same phrase to describe Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan just last year. “I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig,” McCain said in October of 2007, describing Clinton’s universal health care plan when she was running in the Democratic primary. He also, in February 2007, used the phrase to describe conflict over a resolution on the Iraq War. “It gets down to whether you support what is being done in this new strategy or you don’t,” McCain said at the time. “You can put lipstick on a pig, [but] it’s still a pig, in my view.”

The Republicans are defocusing the American public on the real issues.

I’d like to see Drudge keep it as a headline for a little while. The term “pig” is very demeaning towards women. I think he will get the ire of some Hillaryites. Calling Ms. Paglia.

Hey BS

I am not a lefty, but educated and honest unlike you. Obama was using an old expression that had nothing to do with Palin. It’s petty twits like you that are twisting it into a smear so you can smear Obama, and you are lying. I am above such petty trash, unlike a bottom feeder like you
I will vote for McCain in spite of the fact that I might be associated with your ilk.

Anyone who is saying what Obama said was an insult of Palin is either a moron or a liar. Which are you? He was talking about McCain’s policies. But feel free to go ahead and lie, and show everyone what a stupid, ignorant geek you are.

Obama's media buddies put him in this bind

Illinicon (Diary) Tuesday, September 9th at 11:53PM EST (link)

had it not been for the over the top coverage of Bristol’s pregancy or Todd’s DUI, his comments today would not have been that big of a deal. He was talking about the idea of the ticket being a reform one and not about Palin directly. However when you add this one to everything that the left has said about her, people assume it is another sexist comments. It was one of the good reasons why McCain was smart to add her to the ticket, because you knew the media would go berzeek attacking her that know every time somebody says anything negitive about her it is like an IV drop of sexism for Hill voters to be reminded of the issues they had Obama during the primaries. IMHO, I think what Sen. Hair plugs had to say about Gov. Palin not caring about her baby because she is anti-eymbronic stem cell research is a 100 times more offensive than Barry’s remark.

plausible deniability

Matthew Morris (Diary) Tuesday, September 9th at 11:58PM EST (link)

I can’t read everything, and I think I have seen it mentioned, but its worth repeating.

1) Whether Obama was directly referring to Palin with the remark or not, it was at best a majorly stupid thing to say. The press he counts on to cover him can do less covering as each day passes- thanks to Palin Power.

2) I think that, given the way it was received by his own audience- and the way they responded- it seems most likely that he wanted to maintain some plausible deniability with an ambiguous statement, but one that could be interpreted in the mean-and-nasty way by “his people only”. Which again, seems to be how they interpreted it at the event.

Sarah Palin OWNS the Lipstick Image...

…and the D’0H!Bama campaign will be paying her royalties on it for the rest of the election.

And nobody thinks that “stinky fish” wasn’t a reference to her, either? Do I have to explain?

Sarah Palin won’t get mad, she’ll just yank D’OH!Bama’s chain and tease him through the bars of his cage…some more.

Even the AP agrees

Matthew Morris (Diary) Wednesday, September 10th at 12:06AM EST (link)

Even the AP agrees:

“You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said to an outbreak of laughter, shouts and raucous applause from his audience, clearly drawing a connection to Palin’s joke. “It’s still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still going to stink after eight years.”

emphasis added mine- did they think calling a policy a pig is just oh so hilarious?

Uhh Uhh Uhh

izoneguy (Diary) Wednesday, September 10th at 12:12AM EST (link)

This little Obama read from the teleprompter,
This little Biden stayed home,
This little Obama said stupid stuff,
This little Biden said even stupider stuff,
And this little Obama went…
“Uhh Uhh Uhh” all the way home…

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

One word: Macaca

McCain camp is right to hold his feet to the fire.

Under pressure, Obama’s true character reveals itself. It’s very different from the carefully constructed persona crafted by david Axelrod and Obama for the credulous millions — the thoughtful, caring, brilliant Obama.

He’ll hold out for a few days and then apologize.

Meanwhile — excellent teeing up for Sarah’s boffo debut this week on ABC>

Thanks again, MSM and Obama!

Wintergreen (Diary) Wednesday, September 10th at 12:44AM EST (link)

The crowd definitely interpreted it as an insult on Palin and a tie in to her joke from her speech. Furthermore, the way he delivered it makes me think it was intentional and scripted…they knew in advance that McCain had described Clinton’s HEALTH CARE PLAN as such, so they had a defense all set up for a scripted comment.

On the other hand, it is an old phrase that he was stupid to use in describing PEOPLE. Since it is an old phrase though, we should let it go tomorrow.

I agree on the stupid assessment.

Moriah (Diary) Wednesday, September 10th at 3:03AM EST (link)

However, I can’t help but draw parallels to other things in this campaign and obsessive political correctness.

I think it is perfectly reasonable to complain of sexism when someone on TV says that the only reason a particular Senator became a Senator was because her husband screwed around on her.

But that’s the media being sexist, not the campaigns.

Mario Cuomo said “You can’t shuck and jive like at a press conference”. People screamed “racist!”. It was pointed out that “shuck and jive” has been said many times in the past referencing politicians and spin. But it was different, people said, because the person he was referencing was black.

Obama said “periodically” in reference to Hillary. People screamed “sexist!”. It was pointed out that periodically is used quite often in regular speech. But it was different, people said, because the person he was referencing was a woman.

I thought both instances were overblown and people were being way too sensitive. I believe both were stupid things to say, but I don’t think that either were meant in a derogatory manner.

I feel the same way about this.

Then again, I’ve often been accused of calling a spade a bloody shovel.

Blessings,

Moriah

Well, probably not. If you were very bright you wouldn’t be defending Obama over this.
