Almost overnight, a known and deadly viral pandemic appears in a completely out of control US border country. Their population, if not already completely freaked out and/or infected, will be looking to get out in a hurry. Where do you think they’re gonna go ?
For most purposes here in the USA, you can say we have literal vast stretches of open borders from Viva La Mexico across the Southwest.
The current US administration would love nothing better than to not let a crisis go to waste.

Let set aside the conspiracy theories aside for a moment. Today, the potential for a huge pandemic is increased. The mortality rate in Mexico is 6% thus far (1000 infected, 60 dead). That’s a higher rate than the 1918 pandemic already as I recall.
The Obama adminimstration can do a lot to help or harm the situation. It’s my guess that they’ll fumble about and miss the opportunity. Most notably, I agree that the US Mexican border, including air travel, should be closed immediately, at least until personnel on the ground in Mexico City get a good grip on what’s going on. For fear of straining relations, this, Obama will not do, not in time to be useful, anyway. Trust me, infected Mexicans making a run for an unattended border will strain relations worse.
I bothered to look up the vaccination schedule on the WHO.org website. Anyone who got a flu vaccination last Autumn got vaccine specifically targeting the H1N1 strains. In America, at least there may be considerable “herd immunity” because of the large segment of the population that bothered to get their annual flu shot last November. I’d be willing to bet that people in Mexico weren’t so smart. Filthy as the general population in Mexico City is, they don’t typically get big influenza outbreaks in Mexico, don’t ask me why.
I am going to check around and see if last Autumn’s immunity boost carries this deeply into the year. I will update what I find here. Unless someone else can beat me to it.

Chemical Sam (Diary) Saturday, April 25th at 5:45PM EST (link)then give them a break, it’s the first model they’ve ever tried. And with 20 million poor people packed into Mexico City-proper, it might be the only sustainable model of health care they’ll ever manage.
That mortality rate is impressive for the flu, see the line from the Wikipedia entry for Spanish flu:
The unusually severe disease killed between 2 and 20% of those infected, as opposed to the more usual flu epidemic mortality rate of 0.1%.[12][13]
Even 0.1% of the current world population is rougly 6 million people.
The 1918 pandemic took up to 50 million lives. back when the world population was smaller. Chilling as that is, we live in the Modern world here in the USA. Many people get the flu shot annually in the USA, and those that have are at least partially immune. There are emergency vaccine stockpiles, new anti-viral agents. Many more people wash their hands, and would step that practice up in an instant. There are antibiotics that will stave off the killer secondary infections, particularly pneumonia. Almost everyone in the country can get to a health clinic in this country in less than an hour. If things get really rough, we can as a nation park it in the house for a week, if necessary.
But it hasn’t come to that, so everyone just calm down!

Seasonal vaccine doesn't appear to confer protection. That's the line since yesterday.
Chemical Sam (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 11:08AM EST (link)Some blurb article about no vaccine cross-reaction on Fox a couple days ago. (need the citation). I’m pretty burned about the whole thing. Me and mine responsibly get the shot every year, infants and elders, too.
Having said that, nobody seems to be able to explain why it is that nobody outside Mexico has died from this strain of H1N1 influenza. That remains true up to this entry 11 AM ET Tuesday April 28.
It’s a wild guess on my part, but perhaps seasonal vaccine which contains H1N1 pieces hasn’t stopped communicability, or susceptibiility to the disease, but has been able to stave off its lethality. We may never know, and we hope to never know.
Also, the programs currently in place, alertness, stockpiles of anti-viral agents, involvment by the Department of Homeland Security (ALL post-2001 BUSH PROGRAMS, by the way), worldwide alerts by WHO and CDC, may do more to kill of a pandemic before it starts, so that we may never know the true potential. (Napolitano, can only goof it up further now, since her opportunity to close the borders has since past. She should shut up and let the pros execute their tasks. And you and Obama can forget about taking credit later, honey)
It’s a triumph for the current American health system, you know, the broken-down, horribly wasteful and expensive thing it is. All those stockpiles put together by Big Pharma, all those people who are getting to doctors on an as-needed basis, without filling out a waiting-list form. All that basic and medical research that resulted in the understanding of the variances in the protein coats of the flu virus, that led to little swab tests, and DNA analysis, and the best ideas about limiting its spread.
Too bad we don’t have Mexico’s system, and understanding of hygiene, and virology. What a friggin’ shame.
Yup, that American system really needs a shakedown by Obama, before it becomes too useful.
By the way, people who contract and defeat the disease, to whatever degree they exhibit symptoms would be immune thereafter to this strain. If it spreads, let it spread slowly, and mildly! Protect yourselves and your families with hygiene, and carefull attendance of symptoms. Good luck to you all!

Bottom line: The Anti-American Left’s solution to the health issues Americans, who are wealthy compared to the rest of the world, get is to make us less wealthy as a nation. Poverty here we come. It’ll cure our obesity epidemic. It’ll also give us polio, leprosy, cholera, and flu pandemics. But that’s fine because that’s what all the impoverished tyrannies all over the world give their subjects.

in the border states we already have MRSA
Beaglescout (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 12:44PM EST (link)The antibiotic resistant staph infections we get in the border and southern states are just nuts these days. Kids are getting staph while playing on the playgrounds at schools because there is so much live bacteria in the schoolyard dirt that every time they get a scratch it turns into an abscess. Because you can’t tell if staph is MRSA until you try to treat it for a couple of days, and by that time it’s so late you could end up with very dangerous heart and other infections, you have to treat it extremely aggressively. TB is back in Mexico and the US. Polio is back in Muslim countries (where they think polio vaccine is a “Crusader” conspiracy to shrink their manhoods), though I hadn’t heard it was in Mexico. Cholera appeared in Zimbabwe last year. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that smallpox and the plague had made a comeback in some part of the globe with government run health care rationing.

Part of the problem is that it has become so politicized
The_Gadfly (Diary) Wednesday, April 29th at 12:35PM EST (link)you aren’t even recognizing some of the politicization. Until very recently, there was a standard process for handling communicable disease of this sort. And the very first step for diseases with the alleged mortality and communicability rates being reported for this one is to quarantine the regions for the outbreaks. That means closing the border immediately, no questions asked, no quarter given. That was standard medical practice and would not receive criticism of partisanship or jingoism. Once the outbreak was better understood, the quarantine might be lifted if the initial assessments were overly aggressive, otherwise the quarantine would remain in place until such time as the outbreak had burned itself out. While the outbreak was occurring palliatives would be provided and research would continue, but quarantine was the first line of defense.

Today, a warning on non-essential travel to Mexico will be issued via The State Department.
Nothing else I know of is forthcoming.
Apologies for not having a link – I’m on my Crackberry.
Be forewarned: Your government is probably going to over-react and over-reach on this.

So, yeah, this does need to be unpoliticized.

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 5:10PM EST (link)asleep at the switch as usual…. all they care is about appearances (as I said above, they will NOT close down or show concern for the Border in any form because all they care about is the free flow of that Border). They want to “appear” to be doing something while NOT actually doing anything…. The usual Liberal “pretend to care” and put “feel-good notions” forth rather than solutions, or in this case real protections!
Had they shut down the Border (issued travel restrictions, or at least travel advisory to “think twice” about traveling to Mexico) due to the Drugs/Violence increases as of late and encouraged Americans to visit FL and CA beaches (keeping US dollars supporting fellow US citizens/jobs/economy) we would NOT be experiencing the high number of potential infections!!!
You are absolutely right, it is all about RACE to Liberals/Democrats not seeing everyone as People and doing what is best for America – they only react to what is best to continue to expand the Democrat Party ranks.

JLenardDetroit (Diary) Monday, April 27th at 5:15PM EST (link)I didn’t say that above, it was in another thread…. my apologies for any confusion!
The Border should have been closed and travel restricted due to the increasing Killings/Kidnappings with the Drug Cartels exerting more and more control over that country…. Until the Mexican military sweeps city to city and cleans up those problems Americans should stay the heck out of Mexico. PERIOD! The US economy needs US dollars to stay here anyway… When are our fellow Citizens going to awaken from their stupefied slumber????

I’m supposed to fly to NYC early Thursday morning, meet up with my business partner Janie ( ‘janiel’ here at RS ) and “my long lost brother” and sister-in-law from Norway, then we all drive to Philly for a music festival for a long weekend and I fly back here to Fort Lauderdale on Monday.
The following weekend (Mother’s Day weekend), Janie, her husband and their entire family are celebrating their three daughters’ Bat Mitzvah’s, which I’ll be doing the round trip flight thingy to NY.
Let’s “hope” there’s no “change” in the plans.

The industry-funded National Pork Board said it “wishes to reassure the public that pork is safe and will continue to be safe to consume.” The statement comes as multiple nations increase their screening of pigs and pork imports from the Americas or are banning them outright as the virus is said to have killed over 100 people and sickened over 1,600 since April 13 in Mexico. U.S. officials say the virus has been found in New York, California, Texas, Kansas and Ohio, but so far no fatalities have been reported.

Swine flu epidemic enters dangerous new phase
The swine flu epidemic entered a dangerous new phase Monday as the death toll climbed in Mexico and the number of suspected cases there and in the United States nearly doubled. The World Health Organization raised its alert level but stopped short of declaring a global emergency.
The United States advised Americans against most travel to Mexico and ordered stepped up border checks in neighboring states. The European Union health commissioner advised Europeans to avoid nonessential travel both to Mexico and parts of the United States.
Comment: Really? No way. You folks in DC actually realize we have borders to check ? Ahhhhh, never mind. It doesn’t matter.

The virus poses a potentially grave new threat to the U.S. economy, which was showing tentative early signs of a recovery. A widespread outbreak could batter tourism, food and transportation industries, deepening the recession in the U.S. and possibly worldwide.

6 swine flu cases confirmed in Texas
A third high school student here was confirmed Monday to have contracted a new strain of swine flu as school officials worked to disinfect desks, doorknobs and other surfaces throughout the school district.
All three teens are or have recovered, as have the other U.S. patients who caught the new virus that has killed 149 people in Mexico and sparked fears of a global epidemic. The three teenagers are among six cases state and local health officials say the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed in Texas.
If it matters to anyone, the other three confirmed (as of this post) swine flu cases in Texas are a 24 year old…….. ooooooh boy……. a 7 year old and a 3 year old.

hundreds of suspected
mom2oneson (Diary) Tuesday, April 28th at 6:12PM EST (link)US flu deaths seen as likely as outbreak spreads
By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer Tom Raum, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Federal officials warned on Tuesday that swine-flu related deaths were likely in the United States as the disease that killed scores in Mexico continued to spread across the world and governments intensified steps to battle the outbreak.
The number of confirmed cases in the United States was raised to 64, but states and cities were reporting more suspected cases. In New York, the city’s health commissioner said “many hundreds” of schoolchildren were ill at a school where some students had confirmed cases.
President Barack Obama asked Congress for $1.5 billion in emergency funds to fight the fast-spreading disease.
Cuba banned flights to Mexico, where public life is being altered dramatically by illness.
So far, no deaths linked to the disease have been reported outside Mexico.
But Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in Atlanta: “I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection.
That was echoed by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. “It is very likely that we will see more serious presentations of illness and some deaths as we go through this flu cycle,” she said.
Napolitano added that in a normal seasonal influenza season, about 35,000 deaths are linked to the flu.
Besser said the U.S. has 64 confirmed cases across five states, with 45 in New York, one in Ohio, two in Kansas, six in Texas and 10 in California.
New York has the largest number of swine flu cases, with a heavy concentration at a Catholic school in Queens section of New York City, where students recently went on a spring break trip to Mexico.
There also were indications that the outbreak may have spread beyond the school, with two people hospitalized and officials closing a school for autistic kids down the street. Those two hospitalizations are in addition to the five hospitalizations announced by the CDC, including three in California and two in Texas.
“It is here and it is spreading,” New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said. “We do not know whether it will continue to spread.”
Meanwhile, swine flu was ruled out as the cause of one of two recent deaths being investigated by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter said Tuesday that lab testing is still pending in the case of the second fatality, but that swine flu is not now suspected.
Cuba banned flights to Mexico, where swine flu is believed to have killed more than 150 people. Mexico City, one of the world’s largest cities, cracked down even further on public life, closing gyms, swimming pools and pool halls and ordering restaurants to limit service to takeout. Earlier, the city shut down schools, state-run theaters and other public places.
But for all the government intervention, health officials around the world suggested the flu virus strain was spreading so fast that efforts to contain it might prove ineffective.
“Border controls do not work. Travel restrictions do not work,” World Health Organization spokesman Gregory Hartl said in Geneva, recalling the SARS epidemic earlier in the decade that killed 774 people, mostly in Asia, and slowed the global economy.
Obama’s request for $1.5 billion in emergency funds would help build drug stockpiles and monitor future cases as well as help international efforts. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the flu outbreak requires “prudent planning” and not panic.
Cuba was the first country to impose an outright travel ban. But the United States and a number of other countries, including Canada, Israel, France and the European Union’s disease control agency have warned against nonessential travel to Mexico.
The swine flu already has spread to at least six countries besides Mexico, prompting WHO to raise its alert level on Monday but not call for travel bans or border closings.
Around the world, officials hoped the outbreak would not turn into a full-fledged pandemic, an epidemic that spreads across a wide geographical area.
“It’s a very serious possibility, but it is still too early to say that this is inevitable,” the WHO’s flu chief, Dr. Keiji Fukuda, told a telephone news conference.
Flu deaths are nothing new in the United States or elsewhere. The CDC estimates that about 36,000 people died of flu-related causes each year, on average, during the 1990s in the United States.
But the new flu strain is a combination of pig, bird and human viruses for which humans may have no natural immunity.
New Zealand reported that 11 people who recently returned from Mexico had contracted the virus. Tests conducted at a WHO laboratory in Australia confirmed three cases of swine flu among 11 members of the group who were showing symptoms, New Zealand Health Minister Tony Ryall said.
Israel’s Health Ministry confirmed two swine flu cases in men who recently returned from Mexico. One has recovered and the other was not believed to be in serious danger, health officials said.
Meanwhile, a second case was confirmed Tuesday in Spain, Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez said, a day after the country reported its first case. The 23-year-old student, one of 26 patients under observation, was not in serious condition, Jimenez said.
With the virus spreading, the U.S. stepped up checks of people entering the country and warned Americans to avoid nonessential travel to Mexico.
“We anticipate that there will be confirmed cases in more states as we go through the coming days,” Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on NBC’s “Today” show on Tuesday.
On Capitol Hill, a Senate panel held an emergency meeting on the disease.
“Based on the pattern of illness we’re seeing, we don’t think this virus can be contained. … But we do think we can reduce the impact of its spread, and reduce its impact on health,” Rear. Adm. Anne Schuchat, the CDC interim science and public health deputy director, told a Senate Appropriations health subcommittee.
“There’s a lot of anxiety right now across the country,” subcommittee Chairman Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, said.
“It’s important for people to know there’s a lot that we can do,” Schuchat told Harkin. “The investments that have been made in preparedness are making a difference.”
Still, she warned, not only might the disease get worse, “it might get much worse.”
“We don’t have all the answers today,” she added.

Also, it is difficult
red4ever (Diary) Wednesday, April 29th at 4:15PM EST (link)If you close the schools and daycares, where do the kids go? Do the parents stay home? That tanks productivity even more. Considering how many die from regular flu every year and how many are sick from swine flu, it’s not time for mass closings and disruptions. The schools in Texas where there have been actual cases are closed for disinfecting. But, you can bet the kids are still hanging out with each other.
Just use common sense precautions. Wash your hands. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Wrap your kid in bubble wrap before sending him out.

LOL @ bubble wrap!
mom2oneson (Diary) Wednesday, April 29th at 5:04PM EST (link)If their jobs are criticial, the company they work for will already have a plan to set up a daycare for children of all ages there for an emergency or disaster. Everyone else can stay home or figure it out. They should have some type of plan already for when their kid is sick and has to stay home. I’m not saying we need mass closings of businesses but the schools and daycares should definately be shut down because it spreads so rapidly in those places.
Two weeks
red4ever (Diary) Wednesday, April 29th at 6:08PM EST (link)No one has a plan for staying home for two weeks when their kids are sick. There are families that if they don’t work, they don’t get paid. So, they send their kids to school or daycare or a friend’s house when the kid is sick. They just cannot afford to stay home.
Shutting everything down right now, even in states where there are no outbreaks would just be too much of a disruption. It’s not necessary at this time. Kids in Montana don’t need to stay home from school because kids in Texas got sick.
Right now, its just use common sense and don’t overreact.
