Herman Cain has finally found that path to victory while Michele Bachmann appears to have stumbled right off it. This past week, the horserace really went through a shakeup. Even Jon Huntsman has a pulse, at least in one state.
Rick Perry fell over. Mitt Romney is holding steady, and the primary calendar is reshuffling throwing in some greater complications for candidates. And everyone and everything from this week is about to be overshadowed by one event happening Saturday.
Florida has decided to move up to January 31, 2012, which will force Iowa and New Hampshire to move up to the first of the month. This complicates things for most of the candidates because it will cut off one full month of campaign contributions before the elections start. Not only that, but it puts the heat of campaign giving season into the holiday season without a recovery month before elections.
Consequently, some people are going to be forced between buying Christmas presents and giving campaign dollars. The average voter will get shut out because of Florida, which helps Huntsman, Perry, and Romney, the three candidates who have never really had to worry about relying on low dollar donations.
Speaking of money, keep this in mind about this week’s horserace. Everyone and everything will be overshadowed by Saturday. The whole race could be shaken up between Saturday and two weeks after Saturday. What am I talking about?
Quarter 3 fundraising numbers for the FEC. The books on the quarter close out on September 30, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. The candidates who raised major coin will start leaking out their numbers to change the media narrative (look to Perry) and all numbers must be available for public inspect no later than October 15th.
This is going to be interesting. To help you out and your respective candidate, this week and from here on out the names of the candidates will link directly to their campaign websites so you can given them what you can and maybe help them change the story by this Saturday night.
Oh, stay tuned at the bottom of the horserace for a very special announcement.
Michele Bachmann
A book could probably be written about the rise and fall of Michele Bachmann. She went from being a force to be reckoned with to polling less than Newt Gingrich. Her campaign has collapsed. Her support has gone elsewhere. And a lot of it is because of her overplayed hand on Gardasil and making that such a big issue. That issue resonates with a key segment of the population, but most people don’t care about it and that she made it such a focal point hurt her.
Compounding that are her staffing issues, the departure of Ed Rollins, and her inability to capitalize on her rise. She raised over a million dollars in one day in the last quarter, but that only got her two million. She does not have a lot of money.
The ARG poll in Iowa still shows Bachmann in a strong place, but in both 2008 and 2010, ARG seemed to be one of the least reliable polls. I have stopped considering ARG when I vet polls.
Bachmann’s rise hurt Herman Cain. Both ran as insurgent campaigns and in any cycle there can only be one viable insurgent. The reason is insurgent campaigns rely on grassroots, not donors. Two campaigns sucking up all the grassroots hurts both campaigns as they fight over limited resources. Bachmann stole the grassroots from Cain. I predicted that when Perry got in, Cain could capitalize on the grassroots casting their gaze from Bachmann to Perry. It took longer than I thought it would and the Perry debate collapse contributed to the grassroots wanting to look around.
They’ve now found Michele Bachmann wanting and are going back to looking at Herman Cain.
Herman Cain
Michele Bachmann falling off the path to victory has helped Herman Cain get back on it. He has had a meteoric rise in polling with Rick Perry’s flame out. Looking at the Fox News poll, Sarah Palin’s supporters have largely all gone to Herman Cain despite Palin derisively calling Cain just “the flavor of the month,” which says more about Palin than Cain.
Cain’s stellar debate performance and an easy to sell economic message have helped him run for something, not against someone. That’s the key to winning. He is also the most optimistic candidate in the field. The other candidates will have to bend his way as he becomes the center of gravity in this race.
There are a few hurdles Cain supporters will have to keep in mind.
First, the media is now going to thoroughly vet Herman Cain in a way he has never experienced. His past support for TARP and opposition to auditing the Fed will come back up. His health issues are going to be raised. Internal staffing and family matters are going to get aired. How do I know? I’m already getting calls from prying reporters. In my mind, there is little if any there, there, but it won’t stop the media from prying.
Second, Cain’s rise has come at the end of Q3 fundraising numbers. He is now going to be cut short a month because of Florida moving up its primary to January, forcing Iowa and New Hampshire to move up to the beginning of January. Next week, we won’t be talking about Herman Cain’s rise so much as we will his fundraising. And if it has not been significant compared to others, that will affect the media coverage of him.
Third, Cain is actually going to have to translate this meteoric rise into fundraising. By multiple accounts it seems Bachmann was not able to do that. Cain, a businessman, probably can. He had one of his best fundraising days ever after winning the Fox debate. He’s going to need to compound that effort so if his overall Q3 numbers aren’t good, he can stilll claim momentum.
Fourth, as we saw with Perry, the media spotlight is going to be on him and every perceived flub and flop. Saying on CNN yesterday that he could not support Rick Perry today has raised hackles already and not just among Perry supporters, but among a patch of undecideds who just want to know the GOP is going to go all in to defeat Barack Obama. He’s going to have to be more guarded in what he says from here on out.
Finally, with the calendar moved up and the fundraising cut short a month, Cain is going to have to do all of this under the withering spotlight on a time table escalated not just by one month, but by Christmas and Thanksgiving too. He still has to do well in Iowa, but like Bachmann, cannot afford to just focus on Iowa. With limited time, he must use his resources very, very wisely.
Chris Christie
He’s not running. No means no. Get over it. And now if he does run, he’ll be hounded by his repeated “no’s”.
Newt Gingrich
In addition to helping Cain, Michele Bachmann’s fall and Newt’s own stellar debate performances have helped him. In my mind, however, he still has done nothing to show he has a path to victory. About the only thing that could persuade me otherwise right now is not his polling, but his financial results. He had horrible, horrible fundraising in the last quarter. He needs to rebuild that fundraising base. Until I see his Q3 numbers, I’m continuing to leave Gingrich off a path to victory.
Jon Huntsman
Suddenly the man who makes the Kurt Cobain jokes has a pulse. Polling in New Hampshire is consistently showing a rise for him, though nationally no one is getting a rise out of or for Jon Huntsman. His Q3 fundraising numbers will be interesting to see.
Right now I do not see Jon Huntsman having a viable path to victory, but an upset in New Hampshire not only hurts MItt Romney, it would also help Huntsman vault over South Carolina into Florida. And don’t forget Nevada. It neighbors Utah, Huntsman’s home state, and comes before South Carolina. Huntsman also is less restricted by the escalated time table because of his personal wealth, though I’m guessing he’d like to not contribute so much of his own capital in Barack Obama’s economy.
Note to Team Huntsman: get him to knock off the yellow ties. It makes him look orange on TV even though in person the ties are very sharp.
Sarah Palin
She is not running. She will not be the nominee. And even if she did run, she and her team have so bungled her popularity with a sizable portion of the base that she would not be the nominee. Herman Cain is the “flavor of the month”? Really? The Presidency might “shackle” her? That sounds more and more like someone craving attention than serious about a presidential bid. And please save me the “Palin is bigger than the Presidency” nonsense as spin in this “shackled” comment. Game over for Palin.
And the Facebook changes probably aren’t helping her get her message out either.
Ron Paul
Finally we have hit the moment that Ron Paul’s support begins to fade. He is going nowhere and outside the merry band of Paul supporters who will always support him, those who have flirted with him are starting to look elsewhere. It seems Cain and Gingrich are being helped.
Ron Paul should have pretty good Q3 numbers, but he will not be the nominee.
Rick Perry
That sound you hear is Rick Perry’s campaign descending to reality. He has not crashed. Neil Stevens pointed out to me that the Perry debate flub has not been as fatal to him as the Pawlenty debate flub was to him.
But it was still terrible.
Perry needs to not lose the next debate. That does not mean he has to win, he just can’t lose. He is going to be hampered in fundraising it seems by the Securities and Exchange Commission preventing financial services company employees from donating to sitting Governors. Uh-oh. I’ll see you that rule and raise you a super PAC though. We’ll see. Interesting that the Obama Administration imposed this rule after the financial services industry gave so much to the GOP in 2008. Were they expecting a Governor to run against them? Probably so, just not Perry.
In any event, Perry needs to get out his economic plan ASAP. Every debate until he does is going to feature a question demanding to see his plan. He needs to deal with this immigration issue too and show the base that he does not think the Texas solution is a solution for the country — or at least make them hear it that way. The best thing that could happen for Perry right now is a very strong Q3 fundraising number to show the base loves him and he can compete with Romney through the holiday season straight into Iowa and New Hampshire.
But a good debate performance will do more than anything for him right now.
Mitt Romney
Rick Perry’s loss is Mitt Romney’s gain. In fact, I’m rapidly concluding that I should have never bought into the rest of the media’s declaration that Perry was the front runner. His shiny entry distracted from a few things working to Mitt’s advantage and this is more and more, it would seem, still Mitt’s race to lose.
First, the majority of the base does not like Mitt Romney. Consider in just this Fox News poll that 23% of people vote for Romney and that is only up one point in a month. Consider in the same poll that more people say they connect with Rick Perry than with Romney. Consider the Gallup poll that shows no real positive intensity for Romney.
The base wants someone else. But the base is so fractured and unwilling to consolidate behind someone else, that Romney benefits. He is duplicating the John McCain strategy of 2008 pretty flawlessly. The base loathed McCain, but McCain still was the nominee.
Second, Romney has a huge fundraising base. He can handle playing across the map without struggling.
Third, Romney remains the most polished candidate in the field.
Fourth, Herman Cain now helps Mitt Romney. Cain endorsed Romney in 2008 and said on CNN yesterday that he’d gladly support Romney again if Romney committed to repeal of Obamacare. Duh. So now you have Cain out aggressively going after Rick Perry on immigration so Romney does not have to and Romney can focus on jobs while keeping the heat on Perry. It is neither intentional nor coordinated, but it still helps Romney.
I think we all jumped the gun on the polling and this race has never left being Mitt Romney’s to lose. But will the media now vet him and will the other candidates finally start an aggressive push against Romneycare? Not likely.
Rick Santorum
Let’s see how many people felt compassionate enough to give him money in Q3. If he raised a serious amount I would be surprised. Only at the end, like with Cain, did Santorum get a rise out of anybody in that Fox debate. He will not be the nominee and cannot even win his home state of Pennsylvania.
On behalf of L. Brent Bozell of For America, Ned Ryun of American Majority, Drew Ryun of American Majority Action, and me, I would like to invite each of the candidates to Atlanta, Georgia for a real conversation on their background, vision for America, and record.
We will work with the candidates on appropriate dates to have the conversations between mid-October and mid-December.
These will be conversations with just one candidate at a time for two hours each, which will include several breaks to accommodate radio and television broadcast needs. The conversations will be live streamed on the internet and broadcast live with a television and audio feed made available to major media outlets and the campaigns without restriction.
The candidate will sit between Brent Bozell and me and have a conversation. Think “Inside the Actors Studio” in format. American Majority and American Majority Action will help steer the conversation by vetting questioned offered over the internet by video from conservative activists across the country targeted to the specific candidate instead of general questions for the whole field.
These conversations will not be opportunities to go on offense against other Republican candidates, but rather to explain in a conversation led by conservatives for conservatives what the candidate’s own vision for America is.
We’ll be reaching out shortly to each of the above candidates to finalize arrangements and get their commitment to participate.

Conservative Conversations are a GREAT idea!
freentn Thursday, September 29th at 4:38PM EST (link)I trust that Bozell and Erick will not go easy on any candidate as the LSM debate moderators have done with romney and cain. And not be unfair to any candidate as the LSM debate moderators have been to Gov Perry.
IMHO if the questions are detailed and fair I fully expect that Newt will excell as he always does and Gov Perry will excell as he did in the recent CNBC and Newsmax interviews.
Sorry I meant my post to be a separate reply,
earlgrey (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 12:23PM EST (link)although I do find your comment very interesting, and am still struggling to understand why he said it. Was the comment based in being an opportunist or were there real policy/integrity issues that prompted him to make this statement?
Nope...
neoavatara (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 12:16PM EST (link)Look. Perry has done a TERRIBLE job. I wanted to support him and so far cannot. He has no plan for virtually anything, appeared lost when challenged at the debates, and basically his answer for everything is ‘Look at Texas’. That is not good enough.
Perry has a LOT of time to recover. Ignore the media about his early demise. But he needs a course correction. Saw him on CNBC this morning, and he was far better. Erick is right…a good debate performance is essential to get things on the right track.
Until that happens, Romney has to be considered the favorite…for good or ill.

But debates aren't the only platforms
bonnman Thursday, September 29th at 12:29PM EST (link)I saw Perry on CNBC too and he was really good. I’ve heard him in other venues too and he does just fine. Debates, particularly with too many people up there, might just not be his strong point, they are high profile but actually only a small percent of the election process.
Precisely.
Bill S (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 12:33PM EST (link)I’ve made the same point myself. The guy just doesn’t give good debate. But he CAN communicate well. That’s just not the format for him.

I seem to remember that W was in the same situation, good one-on-one but terrible in the debates.
I agree. None of the others with the possible
freentn Thursday, September 29th at 5:50PM EST (link)exception of Newt even come close to Gov Perry in one on one interviews and he gets better every time I see him interviewed.
Having had a back problems myself, I understand how difficult it is for Gov Perry to stand on those stages for two hours. It is almost impossible to concentrate and keep your train of thought when you are blinded with pain. Perry had back surgery in July, it is obvious that he has been in pain during the debates and It appears that halfway through the last debate that he took pain medication which resulted in his flubbing his statement of romney’s Flip-Flops. Back pain is the only explanation that I see for his great ability to answer questions brilliantly during one on one interviews but not be able to sharply answer question an hour in to the debates.
If I were his campaign manager I would demand that chairs be provided so that the candidates could sit when they were not being asked questions and I would release the details about the condition of his back. If he continues to have back pain, I doubt that his debate performances will appreciably improve.
Perry's back problems & debates
CarolT (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 12:18AM EST (link)Kyle- I have had two major neck surgeries, I’m sure it was the same type as Gov Perry. The first time in was in 2000, I was at work two weeks later and had to wear neck collar for six weeks. Second time was in November 2004, the longer they have you under anesthesia(sorry I need spell check for that word) the longer it takes you to get over it. I was in OR for over four hours. I took from November 10 until Feb 1 for me to work a full day at the office, I worked from home for most of the time and would go to office two times a week per my doctor.
I’m sure Rick Perry is also suffering from post surgery exhaustion, weakness, etc that I did second time. It knocked me out much worse than I expected. I agree he should be offered a chair and let public in on his back surgery.

I still think Perry can pull through
bonnman Thursday, September 29th at 12:23PM EST (link)He just needs the next debate performance to be solid. I agree it doesn’t have to be win, just a solid performance.
Romney is just plain too liberal for me and while he polls better in the general election we just don’t need more of the same, this should be obvious.
Have you considered
annplato Thursday, September 29th at 1:07PM EST (link)that perhaps Perry does not have debating skills?
I don’t like his body language either. He cannot overcome the huge obstacle presented by Obama + the MEDIA!!! My main reason not to vote for Gov. Perry is his inability to debate and that would be a loser with the orator-in-chief. We cannot afford someone who when attacked or taken by surprise (which is going to happen a lot) does not stumble, mumble or lose his train of thought.
Cain is imperturbable. He is calm and confident BECAUSE he speaks from his heart not what he thinks people want to hear. He needs some polishing at foreign affairs and I believe Dick Morris’ coaching will help him a lot. We need to be sure that our next nominee, first and foremost has the biggest chance of overcoming the Obama-machine.
IMHO, a Cain/Gingrich ticket would give us the best chance to overcome the myriads of obstacles the MSM will hurl against ANY Republican nominee! I wish everyone would be first and foremost realistic and keep the eyes on the prize: get rid of the Obama machine.

Yes, I have considered that
bonnman Thursday, September 29th at 2:20PM EST (link)and actually agree that debates might not be his strong point but as I started to say a little bit above in the comments, debates are high profile but actually a small part of the election process. How many debates in the general election, three?
I get your concern though but I’m not ready to toss Perry under the bus just yet.
Obama is NOT a great orator.
conservative_dan Friday, September 30th at 1:10AM EST (link)Sure, he can read a script with power, but just listen to him when he has to “free flow”. There IS no free flow. He hems and haws and talks wrong and makes mistakes. The orator thing is all hype. Move along, folks, nothing to see here!

Something needs to be done about the primary system
Kyle-MI (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 12:30PM EST (link)While I favor states being able to control their own primary process, there doesn’t seem to be any self regulating mechanism. The primaries are getting ridiculously drawn out and too far from the general election. There is no reason for any state not to continue to push the start of the primaries earlier and earlier. There is also no reason Iowa should always lead off. There are certainly worse states that could start, but why not some comparable start or small group of small states?
I definitely do not want a national primary and I don’t like leading off with big states. Big States have a lot of power already with House Representatives, number of primary delegates, and electoral votes. On top of that they tend to be more liberal. Sure that is more of a practical matter, but it is not something we should ignore.

freentn Thursday, September 29th at 6:17PM EST (link)since I have been here I have seen several highly critical comments about Gov Perry by the moderators. Yes there have been favorable articles but there have also been equally favorable comments about the other top tier candidates.
The only agenda that I see here is an agenda to help field the best Republican candidate possible. So criticism and praise equally distributed is fair.
I must say that every time I see a moderator praise romney, I am displeased. On the other hand, I have agreed with much of the criticism of Perry by the moderators.
Likewise I think the moderators criticism of posters, including myself, has been fair and I have not seen any effort by the moderators to”push” me toward a particular candidate. To the contrary, I think my personal admonition by the moderators was that I was wrong to push so far and so fast away from a candidate that I once favored.
I for one only want to see the best possible Republican Nominee and although I have my favorites I am open to another candidate coming out of right field to shot to the top.
Time is short. This thing will be over before we know it and there is no time for people to be sniping at the people who give us this opportunity to express our opinions and learn about the strengths and the weaknesses of each candidate.

Great idea about the conversations.
runner12 (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 1:39PM EST (link)This would be miles better than the debates. Any candidate who does not take you all up on this offer is very foolish.
I am very puzzled about Cain saying he could not support Perry. He was running a positive campaign and this is really disapointing to me. I reallly liked Cain, but this coupled with his support of Romney takes him down a peg in my eyes.
Is Palin's comment her way of saying she isn't running
Scope (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 1:49PM EST (link)without actually saying the words I’m not running? Here is her direct comment-
“Does a title shackle a person? Are they, someone like me who’s maverick – you know I do go rogue and I call it like I see it and I don’t mind stirring it up in order to get people to think and debate aggressively and to find solutions to the problems that our country is facing – somebody like me, is a title and is a campaign too shackling? Does that prohibit me from being out there, out of the box, not allowing handlers to shape me and to force my message to be what donors or what contributors or what political pundits want it to be. Does a title take away my freedom to call it like I see it and to affect positive change that we need in this country? That’s the biggest contemplation piece in my process.”
Does Palin not understand that she has complete control of her own message, and that she is only “controlled by handlers” if she allows herself to be handled?
Does Palin not understand that having the title President gives her a big microphone, and a big audience to promote her ideas, policies and positions, and it doesn’t shackle her as she claims it would? Even with her facebook comments and Tweets, she is expected to have at least a certain amount of decorum if she wants to be a respected voice for conservatism?
I’ve been convinced for a long while that Palin wasn’t going to run. If this is how she bows out of the race, she has seriously taken advantage of all of her supporters. No wonder her PAC sent out it’s last big push fundraising letter a week ago.
Just now figuring this out?
Whacker77 Thursday, September 29th at 3:05PM EST (link)If you’re just now realizing Palin has been taking her supporters for a ride, then where have you been? The idea she was ever a viable candidate was crazy. She flopped as a VP candidate and everything she’s done since has been about her own celebrity and personal fortune.
I know Rush Limbaugh thinks she is the last, best hope for America, but she quit the governorship after just two years. If she can’t take the heat of Alaskan politics, how can she handle DC? She made a choice when she quit to become a conservative voice, not a candidate.
This whole 2011 bus tour has been an unhelpful farce. She only revved it up every now and then just to steal the limelight from people ready to enter the race. She stepped on Romney, did the same at the Iowa Fair, and tried to steal the thunder of Christie the other night. It’s always been about her.
To claim the presidency might shackle her may be the most ridiculous thing Palin’s said since McCain chose her in 2008. Now that reality has set in for her, she can’t figure out how to bow out gracefully.
No wacker, I'm not just figuring this out
Scope (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 3:24PM EST (link)I’ve been saying for a long while that Palin was just using her supporters to fatten her bank account, and increase her celebrity. If you’ve been reading RS for any length of time, it is almost a mortal sin to knock Palin and/or her supporters.
My above point was mainly to say that if this interview was her way of telling her supporters that she isn’t running, when some are still holding out hope that she is running, and need to hear her say the words, I’m not running, she has dealt them the final insult. That was my main point.
Agreed 100%
defenseconservative Friday, September 30th at 9:14AM EST (link)She was never a viable Presidential candidate. According to polls, 65% of Americans say they would NEVER, EVER vote for Palin as a presidential candidate. She’s the most unpopular politician in this country.
As for her “the presidency would shackle me” statement, that’s the most ridiculous thing Palin has ever said. Ever. And I’ve heard Palin say some very ridiculous things during the last 3 years.

davesinsanantonio (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 3:10PM EST (link)to not run.
There are reasons, and there are excuses. This sounds like a decision looking for an excuse that will let her stay in the public eye.
Exactly
perry4prez Thursday, September 29th at 5:34PM EST (link)Palin is the reality show candidate, people watch her the way they do Jerry Springer or Ricky Lake. She is trying to string people out for as long ad possible till she says “I’m not running” and this “the presidency would shackle me” schtick is about staying relevant even after she says she’s not running.
Not sure how anyone takes her seriously
pdawk Thursday, September 29th at 3:28PM EST (link)She has become a joke and a distraction. After her actions of the last few years she would have trouble winning a Republican primary in her home state much less the Republican primary for the President of the United States.
For a long time, I've believed that Palin will not run.
defenseconservative Friday, September 30th at 9:08AM EST (link)What tipped me off was that Palin was (and continues to be) on FN’s payroll and, to this day, she has not received any ultimatum of the kind that Gingrich, Santorum, and Huckabee received when they began flirting with the idea of running for President. Palin has also formed no EC, has not reached out to the GOP’s whale donors or key GOP figures in early states, and has no fundraising mechanism other than SarahPAC, funds raised by which cannot be used for a Presidential camoaign.
Palin is treating her supporters in a truly despicable way. Instead of telling them in clear terms that she will not run, she continues to string them along and refuses to give them a yes-or-no answer, instead feeding them with unclear statements. Luckily, her only supporters now are her diehard supporters, a small but vociferous clique of fans who would wait even 10 years for her to jump into the race. Even if Palin joins the race now, she won’t make any statistically significant impact on it. The window for her to jump into the race has closed. There will be no more candidates jumping into the race now. Candidates will now be dropping out of the race, not jumping into it.
I think that it’s the Jews’ own fault that Hezbollah/Hamas keep trying to kill them! I was thrown off of this site!
What I feel disconcerting
annplato Thursday, September 29th at 2:28PM EST (link)is that so many are still in the Perry camp to the point they cannot see his shortcomings: weak on the border issue and a very poor, inarticulate debater.
I will vote for the Republican nominee in the general election no matter who he/she will be. That is our only chance to get rid of the present nemesis in the WH; in the meantime I listen and keep my mind open.
I have ONE single minded goal: OBAMA MUST GO! I will always gravitate towards the person most likely to be able to defeat Obama. Perry is NOT the one, as Ron Paul isn’t.
A Herman Cain/ Newt Gingrich ticket would be a winner in my opinion; they complement each other very well. I don’t want to hear about Newt’s “baggage”, since, as we can see by now, no candidate is without any baggage. If the person was alive for a few decades, especially in the public life, he/she WILL have “baggage”. We cannot afford to shoot ourselves in the foot by nominating a weak candidate vis-a-vis the Obama-Machine!

JSobieski (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 4:17PM EST (link)“The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two Persons, of whom one at least shall not be an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves.”
Literally, the prohibition is against someone in the Electoral College from voting for a President and VP who are from the same state. Taken literally, the prohibition would only impact the Electors in the state from which both Pres. and VP would be residents. For example, if both Pres. and VP candidates were from Michigan, all Electors except for Michigan electors would be voting for at least one person from a different state.
Of course it is easy enough to g around the prohibition.
My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2

Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

annplato- Why are your
Scope (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 3:41PM EST (link)ideas and views on the ideal ticket being Cain/Gingrich not to be considered disconcerting to the Perry supporters? Cain has made many many gaffes, and has shown a propensity for foot in mouth disease in the past. In some interviews, Cain has come across as not being ready for prime time, especially with respect to foreign policy. You believe that Perry is weak on immigration, but have you done any research to see that Cain has been on almost the same page as Perry on illegal immigration? Up until the Sept. 7 debate he was giving answers to immigration questions which mimicked Perry’s positions. He even said in that debate that “it is a states rights issue, and that those closest to the problem are the ones that should be handling it.” Now he decides to come out and knock Perry for actually honoring his states rights in passing the Texas Dream Act. How do you square that circle?
Granted Perry has not been known to shine in the debates, but have you watched any of his speeches and interviews, where he comes off much much differently? The president doesn’t have to debate anyone, but he does give many speeches. It was actually some of Perry’s speeches that attracted me to him to begin with. If your whole criteria for supporting a particular candidate is how they perform in a debate, I’d think Romney would be your guy. All style no substance.
Herman Cain as the great prognosticator
tyman Thursday, September 29th at 2:49PM EST (link)I just watched the video of him saying that he felt Romney can’t win. He said that he didn’t think Mitt would be better this time than he was last time, in ’08.
Mitt didn’t win Florida, South Carolina or Georgia, and if you don’t carry them you can’t win.
I agree with Herb on this one…I think Mitt will still have trouble carrying GA, SC and probably Florida.
So, if Romney can’t win the nomination, and if Rick Perry wins it, is Herb saying he will support Obama?
With positions like this, I think Herman’s rise will be short lived. I was excited for him, but now he has lost my support with what he said to Wolf Blitzer, and judging from the comments, others feel this way too.
I’ve tried to find something to like about Romney, but it’s tough to like someone when you just don’t know what they honestly believe. Plus, I don’t like the dishonesty and misrepresentation of Perry’s positions.
Who is Herb?

Sorry, I guess I didn’t make it as obvious as I thought.

Perry was the frontrunner
gator_hoo (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 2:50PM EST (link)By definition, the frontrunner is the one who can win by simply not erring, which was Perry, two bad debates later, he was still leading. It took a disastrous debate when he most needed a strong one to change his status. Just because he dropped frontrunner status doesn’t mean he never took it.
The dirty secret about presidential campaigns
Whacker77 Thursday, September 29th at 2:55PM EST (link)There’s are a couple of dirty little secrets about presidential campaigns that ought to be mentioned.
First, it helps to have some government experience. I know many think that’s crazy, but it’s true. Understanding the process is key to getting things done. Amity Shlaes mentioned this in a piece about Coolidge. He had wide experience in government before he came to Washington and it greatly helped. Same for Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, LBJ, and FDR.
Second, running for president is nothing like running for the House, Senate, or even governor. We can’t just run anyone and expect to win just because the other guy stinks. It doesn’t work that. It’s pretty easy to get Tea Party types into the House and, in some cases, the Senate, but not the White House. It’s a bridge too far when the whole country is involved.
Why do I bring this up? Well, look at the candidate who’s shooting up the polls. Cain is a great guy with a great message, but he’s never had any experience in government. I know he worked for the KC Fed, but that’s not the same. It’s also true he doesn’t have a big campaign that can incorporate any polling bounce. He’s like Huckabee in 2008.
Somehow, and despite huge victories in 2010, we’re likely to end up with a nominee no one really wants. Just a few months ago, everyone thought Romney was DOA due to healthcare, but no one with enough stature, prowess, and smarts stepped forward and now Romney looks head and shoulders above the rest. Maybe Perry can turn it around, but I doubt it.
Every week when Erick gives these updates I scroll down the page waiting to see the big name choices, but they’re never there because none decided to run. As an emailer mentioned to the Weekly Standard, our field resembles the 1980 field if Reagan, Bush, and Baker didn’t run and we were left with just Connelly, Anderson, and Phil Crane.
One day they’ll write a book as to why so many of the top names (Christie, Jeb, Daniels, Barbour) all passed and left us with retreads, vanity candidates and screwballs.
Looks can be decieving....
onemovoter (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 3:24PM EST (link)And many of us conservatives know it. That’s why Romney may “look head and shoulders” above the rest, but he isn’t. We know the real deal when we hear it, not see it.
Reagan even had his problems in the 1980 primary campaign. He even fired many of his campaign staff. The key will be how well someone is able to turn around things and lead their candidacy into victory. Instinct will always trump experience.
“Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain, and most fools do.”- Benjamin Franklin

You seem to be looking at the world through weird colored glasses.
davesinsanantonio (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 3:24PM EST (link)I don’t see how any of the last four you named are bigger names than Perry or Romney. Nor, do I see how either of them is a screwball. I could see you somebody with a jaundice view of things could say they were vanity candidates, But, isn’t EVERYONE who runs for the presidency??? Re-tread is in the eye of the beholder. But, even there how could you label Perry a re-tread when he has never run for the presidency before?
Your bitter disappointment that whoever your favorite political fantasy is didn’t run, or maybe already dropped out, must make it hard for you to face reality just now. But, take a nap–maybe you’ll feel better later.
Romney and Perry not screwballs
Whacker77 Thursday, September 29th at 4:19PM EST (link)I wasn’t saying Romney and Perry were screwballs. I was directing that comment at the likes of Paul and Johnson and even Santorum.
My remarks about vanity candidates were directed squarely at Bachmann and Gingrich. Bachmann isn’t a team player according to many members of the House. Gingrich, on the other hand, is just trying to sell books.
As for the four I mentioned who passed, let’s be honest. Had any of them run, Perry would not have entered the race. He got in because there was no real alternative to Romney, especially since Pawlenty was flopping.
I am disappointed with the field, not because my preferred choice didn’t run, but because so many better choices chose not to run. I’ll gladly vote for whomever the nominee is, but I’m upset that the realistic choices are so limited.
Wow. Just wow.
gator_hoo (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 4:09PM EST (link)I’m not sure the candidate that Whacker wants exists. Question, would the 22nd Amendment apply to Zombie Reagan?
Not looking for Mr. Right
Whacker77 Thursday, September 29th at 4:25PM EST (link)I’m not looking for the perfect candidate. Unlike Rush Limbaugh, I realize there’s never going to be a perfect candidate. Had Reagan run today, Rush and the other real conservatives on talk radio would have had real problems with him.
My issue/concern/unhappiness with the field is that there are so few realistic choices. I’d like Christie to get into the race, not because I think he’s the real deal, but because I want to have more better choices. Just look at the way Romney’s game improved with Perry’s entrance.
Because the credible, accomplished choices like the ones I mentioned passed, were left to get excited about Cain or Santorum. I think Cain brings a lot to the table, but, in a field with higher profile choices, would he be more than the Steve Forbes of the race? I don’t know.
I just feel as though we have a major chance to do something special in 2012 and I hate that we’re left to choose from a group that’s not strong at all. Just my view.
It looks like you're saying
gator_hoo (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 5:04PM EST (link)That you want someone else to enter the field, but that you don’t want to vote for that someo
No
Whacker77 Thursday, September 29th at 5:45PM EST (link)I want more candidates because I want all of us to make sure we’re choosing the best possible choice. I might vote for Christie. I might vote for Romney. I might vote for Perry. Let’s just get as many in the fight as we can so we make the best choice possible.
So basically,
gator_hoo (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 5:24PM EST (link)You want a viable non- Romney establishment candidate in the field, although it also looks like you have idealized some of those siting out, like Trucey McTrucemaker. Am I in the neighborhood?
No
Whacker77 Thursday, September 29th at 5:47PM EST (link)The establishment vs. grassroots argument is tiresome to me. I want to find the best candidate available. That could be Romney, Perry, or someone else. I just want more credible choices. Don’t confuse acceptance of the field with resignation about the field.
That's interesting Whacker77.
runner12 (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 5:37PM EST (link)Just today Rush was talking about Reagan and how the GOP elites despised him, just as they despise conservatives today. So I am not sure where you are coming up with the statement that Rush would have criticized Reagan.
Even more conicidental is your mention of Christie, of whom Rush was speaking of today. He did not say that Christie was not conservative per se, but he said that he was not a Reagan conservative. I must say that I agree with Rush on this one based on some of Christie’s statements and who is trying to push him to run.
Christie is a great Gov. for NJ. But as acat said below he would have difficulty with the limited government, Reagan-type conservatives.
Baloney
Whacker77 Thursday, September 29th at 6:14PM EST (link)Just yesterday, Michael Reagan said he wasn’t sure his father could make it through today’s Republican primary. That’s Reagan’s son, not me saying that. Let’s not forget Reagan was pro choice and raised taxes as governor in California. Hw would have struggled just as Romney has and does.
As for Rush, I heard his long winded diatribe on Reagan today and he’s rewriting history. Rush is creating a false image of Regan to burnish what he believes conservatism should be. That is to say it’s whatever he deems it to be. Rush also conveniently left out that Reagan’s win in 1966 coincided with a huge year for Republicans thanks to LBJ in Vietnam. It was a conservative platform, but he was aided by the atmosphere of the times.
When I watched Christie’s speech I knew Rush would blow his top over the word compromise. He tries to say Reagan never compromised, but he did. Just look at the social security plan of 1983. Look at the various taxes he raised in the second term. There was plenty of compromise in Reagan on certain issues. Not SDI though, but there was compromise.
Frankly, I’m tired of Rush being the arbitor of who is or is not conservative. Currently, he believes Sarah Palin is the epitome of conservatism. In fact, I think Rush is worried Christie might jump in and box out his girlfriend from running. I don’t think either will run, but Rush has done and continues to do a lot to take down anyone who challeneges Palin’s place in conservatism.
Who Reagan was is not the same as who he has been portrayed to be by Rush.
Umm...
runner12 (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 6:28PM EST (link)He quoted from a book by Steven Hayward. So now Mr. Hayward is re-writing history?
Look, I get that Christie is your guy. But you are taking things way out of context. I actually did not hear Rush mention that Christie said the word
“compromise”. He just mentioned that many of the old guard GOP are pushing for him to run and to draw your own conlclusions, and I have based on that and Christie’s own statements.
Rush was right when he said that the old guard GOP is hating his guts right now, sheesh look at your response. It seems like we are just on opposite sides of the spectrum. I am a strong conservative, you are more of a moderate which is okay. I just hope that whoever is the nominee, you will support and not tear down in the primaries.
Kowalski
runner12 (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 7:47PM EST (link)Regarding compromising with Democrats, I think that is an impossibility given how far Left the Democrat party has swung. I cannot fathom how compromise would be possible between a group of people who are for big government, deficit spending, and limited freedom and those on the conservative side who are for limited government, fiscal responsibility, individual liberty, and family values. The two idealogies are polar opposites.
If we were to compromise with the current Democratic Party, we would be selling out our principles and to an extent our country.
With regards to Reagan, he compromised with a Democratic Party that no longer exists today. The days of the JFK Democrats are gone and have been replaced with Alinsky-style Democrats. Additionally, while he was one of our greatest Presidents, he was not perfect ( no man or woman is).
He must not listen to Rush's Show.
freentn Thursday, September 29th at 9:37PM EST (link)Rush adores President Reagan or as he says “Ronaldus Maximus.”
Retreads, vanity candidates and screwballs, oh my!
acat (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 4:34PM EST (link)C’mon, Whacker, get serious.
Christie has been a governor for barely longer than Palin, and even if I agree he’s as solid an east coast conservative as they make, he’s going to struggle mightily to connect with the southern and western branches of the GOP.
Jeb has both a “dynasty” problem, people will vote against him just because he’s W’s brother and H.W.’s son, and an “amnesty” problem – he was historically significantly more open-borders than W. Jeb is a great example of why the GOP need to stop looking at Hispanics as a bloc and start looking at Cuban-Americans, Guatemalan-Americans, Honduran-Americans, and Mexican-Americans as separate groups… the solutions that work for Cuban-Americans simply do not fit Mexican-Americans.
Daniels has the family problem. He’d rather stay married than run the country. I find that I have more respect for him, and I hope the wife doesn’t mind if Daniels gets tapped to run OMB or something.
Barbour .. My pet theory about Barbour is that he’s smart enough to know that the next GOP POTUS is going to have to take a *lot* of heat. We’re talking about starting the dismantling of 70+ years of nanny-state bureaucracies and programs, everyone’s going to bleed some, and the Dems are not going to take this lying down. Perhaps Barbour’s smart enough to realize he doesn’t really want to preside over that.

Yes, retreads and vanity candidates
Whacker77 Thursday, September 29th at 5:54PM EST (link)Maybe you missed what I was saying, but I didn’t say any of the ones of the sidelines absolutely great choices. Having said that, they’re much better than the group with whom we’re dealing. No one considered Perry as a possibility until the other better known choices passed on the chance.
As for Jeb, let me ask you this. Which last name is going to be more unpopular next year? Bush or Obama? I think we all know the answer to that. The argument his last name is toxic doesn’t fly, but he’s not running.
As for immigration, is that the issue which has become the new litmus test? Do we look at that before we look at all other positions? If so, we’re screwed because a lot of really good fiscal conservatives will be knocked out. I don’t like Jeb or Perry’s view on this, but I wouldn’t disqualifiy either because of it. I look at the whole record.
As for Christie, he’s not running, but where’s the proof he’s not connecting in the South? I haven’t sees anything to suggest that.
Whacker, you're really reaching...
acat (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 6:11PM EST (link)to put Jeb or Christie above Perry is just silly.
Christie has a less messy personal life than Giuliani, but he’s still got a lot of east-coast liberal-state positions that hurt him in the primaries.
Ever heard of a “10 foot show car”? Its’ a restored car that, if you keep people ten feet back, looks really good – but when you get close, the bondo and painted-over rust are very evident. The fact is, Christie and Jeb look as great as they do, in part because they’re standing more than 10 feet away, because we haven’t gotten them under the microscope.
Daniels, by the way, would still be suffering from being a “Trucer” – hat tip to Bill S. – and Barbour would still be suffering from a much worse case of Establishmentarianism than Romney.
Like it or not, the window for jumping in is closing fast, and .. these are a pretty good bunch. No, they’re not Reagan in 1984, but .. looking at Perry’s record and Cain’s rhetoric, we might have someone we can compare, down the road, to Reagan 1980.

Conservatives are allowing Romney to win by splitting the vote!
angelatoft Thursday, September 29th at 3:05PM EST (link)The bottom line is that only Perry and Romney can raise the funds necessary to win. The Establishment and the media know this. Their candidate is Romney. Always has been. So, they attack Perry while promoting another conservative who will split the vote with Perry. First it was Bachmann and now it’s Cain. (Although Cain’s record isn’t as conservative as we first thought.) Think about the end results. Do you want Romney? The guy who supported McCain’s amnesty plan and abortion and gun control and Romneycare? If not, don’t allow the media and the Establishment to convince you to split the vote.

acat (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 4:40PM EST (link)you are correct in identifying the threat – note that I was pointing it out months ago – but … I don’t think we’re falling for it.
Look at the numbers again.
Romney has held steady. He hasn’t really benefitted from Pawlenty dropping out or endorsing him. He hasn’t benefitted much from Perry’s stumbling, nor Bachmann’s self-immolation. He’s not maxed out, but he’s close.
The numbers for Bachmann plus Cain plus (Paul/2)* plus Perry plus Santorum blow Romney out of the water.
Bachmann’s done. Santorum’s done. It’s make-or-break for Cain and, as much as I like the guy, it’s all too easy to see his support evaporating if Perry can recover a little. Perry stands to gain, Romney does not.
The only thing that can really hurt us is if Perry and Cain, like Romney and Huck in 2008, continue to split the conservative vote…. and they both seem more likely to draw from the same well, so ..
Cat’s prediction .. Romney loses.

acat (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 6:00PM EST (link)Ponchiki (Russian cake-style doughnuts)
Ingredients:
2 eggs
4 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup milk
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
Oil for frying
What to do:
Melt butter.
Mix butter and eggs with sugar until smooth, add milk and mix.
In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups of flour with all of the baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
Make a well in the flour mix and add the liquid. Mix to create a dough.
Continue mixing and add the remaining flour until the dough isn’t too sticky.
Partially fill a heavy frying pan with oil and heat over medium.
Roll out the dough to about 2/3 of an inch thick.
Using two glasses of different size, or .. if you want different shapes, two tupperware box containers, or .. if you’ve a steady paw, a knife, to cut the dough into doughnut-shapes. Note – don’t make your circles (or whatever) much more than 3/4 of an inch thick or they will remain raw in the middle.
Carefully (!!) drop the rings into the hot oil, turning once.
Dust with powdered sugar, serve.
Note – if the middle is raw, all is not lost! Nuke for about 30 seconds per doughnut to firm things up.

Then skin it very cleanly, and open it and clean it well; and then wrap it in a clean linen cloth and bury it in the earth where it should remain for a day and a night; then take it out and put it on a spit; and roast it over the fire, and when beginning to roast, baste it with good garlic and oil, and when you are finished basting it, beat it well with a green branch; and this should be done until it is well roasted, basting and beating; and when it is roasted carve it as if it were rabbit or kid and put it on a large plate; and take the garlic with oil mixed with good broth so that it is coarse, and pour it over the cat and you can eat it for it is a good dish.”

Yes and no
perry4prez Friday, September 30th at 1:55AM EST (link)It depends on what you mean by “rig” – stuffing ballot boxes, no, even Mitt won’t do that. But you are being naive if you think that DC insiders and “moderates” aren’t trying to steer the nomination away from real conservatives like Perry and Cain. Karl Rove is the best example, he got Perry involved in politics but could not control him, now they are bitter enemies (Hutchison campaign). And I doubt Mitt is doing much to discourage that.
And the problem is that as long as the elites think the grassroots will ultimately settle for whoever they annoint, they’ll keep doing this.

The problem is, while it’s true that several former Bush people – including Rove and several Fox News people – have been bashing Perry and singing Romney’s praises, that doesn’t constitute “rigging”.

perry4prez Tuesday, October 4th at 12:20AM EST (link)I am sorry to re-open an old thread but I have to respond to this.
You say that grassroots conservative anger against the establishment and moderate Republicans has been building since 1976. This is not a newsflash. My question to you is if this has been building for so long why do real conservatives continue to “take one for the team” and vote for Ford, the Bushes, Dole, McCain, etc. when it is obvious that nothing is going to chance and the greater good is NOT served by eating our spinach. I think that we need to send a shot across the bow of the establishment loud and clear and say that we will NOT vote for Romney. Otherwise they will just keep nominating Romney and his ilk knowing that we will suck it up and vote for them in the general. It’s like Linus and the Football.
Yes we might lose the election but we will win a lot more elections after that when we are taken seriously. You say that we need to think about 2014, 2016 and so on, well that is exactly what I am doing.

californiagold Friday, September 30th at 12:51AM EST (link)….but using a network as an advocate for one candidate, while using the network’s “political experts” as attack dogs isn’t ethical.
Although it cannot be proven, some people have suggested that some of the candidates are working as proxies for the Romney campaign. If any of them gets a show on Fox after the election, that would be very telling.
For example, let’s look at the candidacy of Rick Santorum. Here’s a guy who lost his reelection bid by double digits, has no executive experience that I’m aware of, yet is a candidate for the presidency of the US ? On what basis are we as voters to take his campaign seriously ?
What’s odd about the Santorum campaign is that any time Perry makes a statement, Santorum has a contradictory reply. (Even before Perry entered the race Santorum was making attacks on Perry’s statements.) Yet, if Santorum was as conservative as he wants us to believe, why has he yet to expose Romney’s record as governor ?
I don't know if it's other candidates

It’s so obvious that Fox’s choice this campaing cycle is Romney…Sean is so obvious about it, it makes me sick. But you all hold on to your hats, because Rick Perry has NEVER lost a race, and Romney is the perpetual loser…he’s only won one election!! If you have any doubts about what Perry believes in, just read his book, “Fed UP!” It’s a great read and it reinforces my faith Perry. He’s about keeping the fed govt small and will go to great lengths to do it…and he believes in states rights. He follows the U.S. Constitution………he is a true conservative. Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin endorsed his book and Newt wrote the forward in the book! Perry doesn’t lie, he’s a good, solid Christian, and he’s not afraid to tell it like it is. It’s unfortunate his last debate was so bad, but think about it…..he had a raging fire in his state of TX, and he’s still a Gov of one of the largest, most productive states in the union! He obviously has less time to devote to debates, and he probably didn’t put much into that last one because he simply didn’t have the time. Also, I think whoever his “handlers/consultants” are, they must have advised him to tone it down, because he was much more passiionate in his first two debates, and this last one, he just wasn’t himself, plain and simple. Give the guy a chance, and he won’t let you down! Rick Perry knows how to win…he’s been doing it all his life. He will defeat BO, hands down!

The strategy, for good or ill,
gator_hoo (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 7:21PM EST (link)Appears to have been to take Perry’s place as the lead anti-Romney candidate for granted, which meant attacking Romney’s record and then avoiding saying anything that could hurt him with independents in the general. Which made sense going into the debates.
I don’t think anyone could have foreseen the absolute ferocity with which Bachmann and Santorum would come after him, especially Bachmann, who, in my mind, forfeited her role as a tea party leader with her retardation gambit.
Perry has not performed great in the debates (although his take down of Romney on social security in the 2nd debate shows he has potential). I think he would be better advised to explain his his viewpoint, instead of feeling constrained by the general election. His positions are all defensible, but I feel he wants to keep from saying anything offensive, which is different than his typical, call it like I see it attitude, which is probably how he got so far off-base to say that those who disagree with him on the in-state tuition don’t have a heart.
He has a long, solid record of conservatism and election success, which is different than every other candidate currently in the field.

californiagold Friday, September 30th at 7:15PM EST (link)….and I’ll try to be more original on the condition that you try to be less ignorant with your assumptions about what black people think, deal ?
californiagold, on what basis are making these comments?
lineholder (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 1:49AM EST (link)Do you ever take the time to actually visit some of the black conservative websites to find out what their viewpoint is and what their opinions are?
he was asked why blacks always vote Democrat
Doc Holliday (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 1:50AM EST (link)what is he supposed to say? Is he supposed to act like Michael Steele and blame Republicans for not reaching out? Steele was criticized when he did that, so what is Herman to say?
Look, 96 PERCENT of blacks voted for Obama. When 96 percent of a group picks one person, there must be a reason why. If these people are not brainwashed, they certainly are not using their God given individuality. I am willing to say the truth, are you? Blacks voted for Obama because the color of his skin. If whites did this, they would be called racist. Hell, whites are the reason Obama got elected, they split their vote almost evenly, but the minorities went all in for Obama.
But let’s get back to the real subject. You are and freent are all in for Perry, every comment you make is to support Perry and attack anyone in his way. Everyone knows this, you tipped your hand too quickly and too often.
Molon Labe!
You want to know what really gets me about this, Doc?
lineholder (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 2:06AM EST (link)If you go visit any of the black conservative websites, what you’ll find out is they very much want to see the black community as a whole become more independent from government rather than dependent on government. But they’re in something of a catch-22.
A lot of the black community(as a demographic of population) lives in urban areas. The quality of education at those schools stink. Students graduate from high school without the basic skills (reading, writing, English, math) that would let them have a good shot at finding a decent job. If they get more of the black community legitimately employed, then they stand a better chance of helping their own from within.
Would you say that conservatives in general are inclined to support school choice? Guess what? So are these urban area black citizens! And that’s not limited to conservatives, believe me. Do Republicans try to find a common ground on that point? Maybe a little but not much because they’ve got this huge mental block. It isn’t up to the black community to overcome that…it’s up the Republican Party.
Unemployment in these areas is high right now, higher for blacks than for Hispanics, and higher for legal Hispanics than illegals. (And I hope Perry is sensitive to that!)
If they vote Dem, they get more big government handouts. If they vote moderate Republican, they get more big government handouts. If they vote conservative of the compassionate type, guess what…they get more big government handouts.
There are those who want to see the black community succeed! But it isn’t going to happen until they find a way to alter this catch-22.
The catch-22 will be broken at the local level first
JSobieski (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 2:10AM EST (link)There are already examples of DINO’s (Democrats in name only) serving on school boards trying to enact meaningful school reforms.
I think Republican governors can get more of the black vote than a Republican presidential candidate at the present time.
For evidence of a meaningful change, I would look local before looking nationally. That being said, I wonder if there are any such indications.
My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
STOP THE MADNESS!
A reduction in the rate of spending increases is NOT a cut!
In-state tuition for illegals is NOT amnesty!
Requiring someone to pay their medical bills is NOT an individual mandate!
Reducing tax rates is NOT a tax increase!
Not really, JSob
lineholder (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 2:15AM EST (link)Not right now anyway. I wish there were. But they’ve got no cause to trust either Repubs or Dems when they get more of the same either way they go.
I just finished reading some comments about this very topic right before I went on the above rant. At this point, they don’t see Republicans as looking to help them find viable solutions that might let them actually become independent of government…they just see it as a change in hands of big government handouts.
JSob, I will add this kowalski
lineholder (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 2:24AM EST (link)If you are interested, check out the Harlem Success Academy. This is a charter school that is getting hit all the way around from the NAACP and Unions, trying to keep it from expanding. They are teaching the basics, not the indoctrination clap-trap that is becoming so prevalent lately. And the supporters of the school are very enthusiastic about what they have been able to accomplish so far.
The issue may be local just you like said, but when they national orgs interfering…
Agree, Cain certainly lost me & I was

I think we're starting to see a shift
aesthete (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 2:43AM EST (link)in the way that private education, charters, and alternative forms of education are perceived. Whereas homeschooling in the 90s was seen as bizarre, and vouchers were not a particularly well-received part of the CwA, it seems like both (and charter schools) are starting to become more mainstream and accepted as part of general ed reform. There are a couple reasons for this:
1) It’s undeniable at this point that homeschoolers, especially those at the elementary and middle school level, perform extremely well relative to their peers. They are also being seen as less of social pariahs, and have been portrayed positively among the right for years now. Interestingly, homeschooling is now also being seen positively by liberals afraid that their children are being “brainwashed” by corps at public schools.
2) Greater awareness of what a bullcrap major Education is, and of how dumb people who are in it tend to be. To paraphrase the great PJ Rourke, you know all that you need to know about why America’s schools are failing if you’ve gone out with an Ed major.
3) Exposure to teachers’ unions and school admin. It’s kinda hard to say that you’re all about educating kids when you’re shirking your responsibilities to said children to go picket for $1.50/hr more and to not have to pay into your health insurance or retirement packages (horrors!), and it really shows that these people don’t care about kids. Whenever they’re interviewed on the news, their lines about educating kids come off as stilted, forced, and pro forma; sort of like when a Democrat has to say something nice about the military. Parents pick up on this attitude, and don’t feel inclined to reward those people who have said attitude.
4) The internet has been a remarkable tool for self-education, and for the auto-didact. Within seconds, you can bring up tutorials (note the plural) on Photoshop, how to code in C++, how to fix your car, how to play an instrument — you name it, it’s being taught on the internet. When it becomes clear how many ways there are to teach, and how effective non-classroom teaching is, insisting on the classroom format for children becomes as dated and wrong as Marxists going on about labor exploitation in the trade industries.
5) It’s laughably clear that policy on the issue is just terrible. NCLB is widely disliked, and when the Dems’ “solution” is to throw more money down the hole without accountability, then it just seems silly.
I don’t see change happening at the federal level, either, but I do believe that a sea change in education is on the horizon.
The act of defending any of the cardinal virtues has today all the exhilaration of a vice – G.K. Chesterton
race has nothing to do with anything, it is culture that matters
Doc Holliday (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 2:23AM EST (link)If you are raised to work hard and earn your own way, that is how you are going to view life. There is a reason blacks from Africa do so much better than African-Americans as a whole, it is based on culture. The blacks that come here from Africa had a plan before they every got on a boat or plane. http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2009/03/why-do-black-immigrants-do-better-than-native-blacks/6891/
The evidence can not be denied, and I have seen a LOT of anecdotal evidence. The hardest working people I know are African immigrants.
Also, I think Latin American immigrants work hard as a group. But there are political interests in this community that want to rip out a person’s individualism and make him part of a grievance group. This “latino” grievance group is most powerful in California, but they are everywhere. Self styled “African-American leaders” try to control black people and even have more influence than their Hispanic contemporaries. The government, the dEmonrat party, big city politicians, community organizers, the NEA, mass media, and entertainers all have a hand in this. We are not going to fix it with a few slogans or campaigns to reach out.
One would think continued suffering and continued lies and failures would wake people up. But people have a hard time breaking from groupthink. Even when they realize what they always believed is wrong, it is very difficult to break free.
I am reconciled to the fact that the world will likely be 50-50 conservative and liberal, with that number changing a bit each election. I know life is short and I am not willing to waste mine trying to convince everyone why their beliefs are wrong. I just want conservatives to be better at this political game, all we need are the wins. We can’t change everyone, and should not waste time trying.
Molon Labe!
That's the point, Doc
lineholder (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 2:28AM EST (link)If this is approached on common ground, it could be a win. And for all the talk conservatives do about decrease government spending, wouldn’t decreasing welfare dependence be a step in the right direction?
Okay, so I’m societal first, and maybe these kinds of issues are just something I’m more interested in and passionate about than others. But there are correlations that could be advantageous, both in a societal context and in a political context.
that is probably true lineholder
Doc Holliday (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 2:50AM EST (link)Our interests are likely different. For ages, my interest was foreign policy, certainly when it came to the presidency. I figure we have 535 legilators for a reason, and only one man to represent our nation to the world.
One thing that Rush said a couple of decades ago always stuck with me, and has been a basis for my views on the welfare state. He said, “liberals judge compassion by how many people receive welfare; conservatives judge passion by how few need welfare”. To me that says it all, and specific policies can come out of such a simple and clear reality.

re:Doc....
californiagold Friday, September 30th at 7:43PM EST (link)….Cain is getting the heat today not because of his views on how to solve inner city problems, but because of his insensitive statement suggesting that blacks are brainwashed into voting for democrats.
I guess the fact that Colin Powell voted for Obama makes him brainwashed as well ? Or how about Condi Rice, who stated what a great day it was for race relations in America the day Obama was elected. Was she brainwashed too ?
The sad thing is, Herman Cain had a chance to do what few republicans have done – which is gain potential support among black voters who normally aren’t supportive of republicans. By suggesting blacks are brainwashed, Cain has lost any credibility he had within the black community.
While it’s true that blacks vote for democrats by large percentages over republicans, there are republicans who have had success attracting the black vote. Jack Kemp was one such republican. Kemp admitted that one reason blacks don’t vote republican is because republicans rarely even try to campaign within the black community. Kemp was the exception and proved that republicans can be successful if they make a sincere commitment. Most don’t.
Contrary to some of the racially insensitive statements made by Doc Holiday in this thread, not all blacks want “freebies”. As long as conservatives like Doc continue to promote ignorant and racially motivated statements like that, republicans as a whole will be labeled in a negative light.I’d suggest Doc research how Jack Kemp was successful within the black community. Doc might learn something.

That is political stupidity. A recipe for marginalization.

With the liberal voters in this demographic,
lineholder (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 1:21AM EST (link)you are correct. With moderates and conservatives in this demographic…they don’t like the way Cain expressed it but they know indoctrination takes place. They believe that the black community is capable of much more than the Dems allow them to achieve, and Repubs don’t try to garner their votes, because they’re stuck in an attitude that they can’t get the black vote.
There are common points between some of the things that black community is hoping to see happen and what conservatives in general want to see happen. But no one is even close to bringing those two side together on those common points.
So, what would YOU suggest that they do?
Too lose it U have to have it 1st & Cain
freentn Friday, September 30th at 1:41AM EST (link)never had and never will have anywhere near the 30 to 50% of the Black vote that he dreams of getting.
But I agree it was stupid of him to insult Black People that way and he should be mindful of the fact that not only blacks but whites and hispanics and asians also vote democrat. Yes they are all stupid but if I was running for President I wouldn’t say that on National TV.
I know I am going to regret this, but how is Cain pointing out the obvious going to hurt them.

Cain would have been well advised
Scope (Diary) Saturday, October 1st at 8:39PM EST (link)in his response to the Blitzer interview to say simply that he was running to be president of all of the US, not any racial component, religious component, no gender component, or any other class of American citizens. Cain made a big error in saying that he would take any percentage of “black votes.” He mistakenly interjected himself in one with a set up race discussion where he should never have been involved. Cain should have never have gotten in to that discussion with Blitzer. Blitzer also got him to say that gun rights are a states issue in May. Sorry to see that Cain would talk race at all.

Field is taking shape now
septembergurl (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 5:52PM EST (link)Romney and Perry Steady: With Romney slightly ahead and both candidates coming in at more or less low 20s, the frontrunners have stabilized. Each dominates their constituency: Romney leads in the Competent Proven Manager With a Vision category (aka the Establishment) which includes Huntsman, Pawlenty when he was in, Christie if he came in. Perry leads the Tea Party/Ideologcal Conservative Wing, which also includes Cain, Bachmann, Santorum and Gingrich. Romney benefits from having fewer competitors for his votes, and from the attacks on Perry from Bachmann et al. Both have serious problems, however. Romney has just flip-flopped on flip-flopping, illustrating his continuing problem of trustworthiness, as well as his issue problems, mostly Romneycare. Perry is a poor debater and also has issue problems (immigration).
Cain and Gingrich Rising: These two candidates have maximized the opportunities of various free fora, including debates, straw polls, conventions, etc. Their campaigns have been plagued with staffing, organizational and funding problems. This will continue because these are fundamental to these candidates. They like to operate on the edge of their seats. This is why they are interesting and why they won’t be the nominee. However, both bring a great deal to the primary campaign. Cain is a great communicator, brilliant at simplifying complex issues and connecting with voters. Like Gingrich, he makes numerous unforced errors that undercut his viability. His 999 plan is not revenue neutral, and is gimmicky. He would be better off with the fair tax, which is simpler, and which is his real goal. Gingrich is a great source of ideas and a brilliant strategist. One example: On immigration, Gingrich remarked in a debate that we have made legal immigration too difficult and illegal immigration too easy. Exactly! Today he offered a solution in his new Contract: Move half the bureaucrats in Homeland Security from Washington to the Southern Border. You have to admire that kind of audacious thinking.
(Our current immigration problems, incidentally, are the result of legislation authored by Ted Kennedy in the 1960s. I too have a simple plan for immigration reform — my Comprehensive Ted Kennedy Repeal Act. Simply repeal every law Teddy had anything to do with and many of our problems — Obamascare, No Child Left Behind, etc — would go away.)
Christie and Palin Not Running: Neither would do well at this point, and I think they know it.
Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman: I pair them because while Ron Paul has the most passionate supporters, Huntsman’s are the least passionate. As we know Paul’s followers are everywhere, sending him money, turning up at events, spamming online polls and straw polls, etc. However, most voters are not looking for that level of commitment, and Paul’s pattern in 2008 was that his supporters dropped off during the campaign and moved to other candidates. This is happening in 2011 at an even faster pace, though paul is better known this time around (possibly because of that). He is diminishing as a factor and should not play a role after Iowa and NH. Right now he functions as a foil for Huntsman who is struggling to overtake Romney in New hampshire.
As Huntsman’s only conservative supporter (certainly the only one at this site) I must confess it’s dispiriting to visit his website and read the vapid comments of his listless supporters: the international relations student in his fifth year of college (what?fifth?what?), the moderate Democraps, the independents, the people for whom politics is a fashion statement, those who are repelled by strong political convictions — they’e all there, attracted by Huntsman’s frictionless persona, his orthodox unorthodox views(gays, crap&tax), his ties..whatever.
Huntsman has bet the ranch (and keep in mind it’s a very big ranch with lots of money on it) on the belief that — since after 2012 America will be Wisconsin writ large (and that’s the best case scenario) – the country will want a President able to rise above the ideological conflict, while still retaining core convictions by which to govern. So far this has been a losing bet, but even as Paul is dropping to his core of true believers, Huntsman is slowly rising — coming in ahead of Santorum and Bachmann in the Fox poll, for example.
Santorum and Bachmann: Falling. Their campaigns are underfunded and suffer from lack of organization, but unlike Cain and Gingrich, they have not benefited from the debates and other appearances. This was predictable for Bachmnann. It is simply hard to run successfully from Congress. Her other faults have been on display during these debates — exaggerations and misstatements have always featured prominently in her dramatic self-presentation.
Santorum has a good base as a religious conservative and as a former Senator from a large swing state. Yet he is failing. He has made the same mistake Tim Pawlenty made. No, not the failure to confront Romney on the Obamneycare in the debate. Not being too nice. Not being unable to beat back attacks from Bachmann. No, what killed Pawlenty, especially in the Midwest, and especially in Iowa, was the remarkably hawkish speech on foreign policy he delivered at the end of June. In it he gave a resounding cheer for the neoconservative project of bringing Democracy at the point of a gun (or the sharp end of the Drone) to all benighted corners of the world. The very policy pursued actively by George Bush and secretly by Obama, widely discredited by the end of the decade for its lack of results. Santorum espouses a similar hawkish worldview, and it is this that is costing him support he cannot afford to lose, especially in Iowa an New Hampshire.
Erick has decreed that foreign policy is not an issue, otherwise I could say a lot more about the need for Republicans to figure out this issue before the election.
Wrong
Erick Erickson (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 8:21PM EST (link)I think foreign policy will be a huge issue and hope the next few debates spend much, much more time on it.

septembergurl (Diary) Friday, September 30th at 12:26AM EST (link)I too hope foreign policy will be discussed in future debates.
I don't believe the voters are that concerned about foreign policy
californiagold Friday, September 30th at 12:30AM EST (link)..at least not this election cycle. With the economy in recession, record foreclosures, and high unemployment, most voters don’t give much thought to what’s going on in the rest of the world. Afterall, OBL has been captured.
But I do agree with Erick regarding what Perry needs to do…
Perry must offer a bold economic plan – and then sell it with a positive message for the future. But Perry’s campaign must also do a scorched earth campaign on Romney. Perry must takes the gloves off and respond to all the crap that Romney has thrown at him. If he doesn’t, Romney will win by default.
PAC's backing Perry need to go nuclear on
freentn Friday, September 30th at 12:56AM EST (link)cain, bachmann and santorum. That’s is where Perry can pick up votes. The romney vote is maxed out at his historic ceiling of 20+% there are just not many votes to be gotten from romney that 20+% has been with him since 2008 and they are not likely to leave him. However, you are right Perry needs to go after romney in a Presidential way like Reagan did against carter.

I went to my church and asked 20 people, all but one stated there was no way they would vote for him. Evangelicals will not come out in mass for him. He has lost any chance of gain 30% or more in the Latino group. His John Kerry like flip flopping on everything will get him deemed untrustworthy in the general election. His stint at Bain capital has been a job crusher, how do you think that is going to look to the unemployed. This is the reason Romney will lose, he cannot win. Perry is tested, he has been through the fire. There is nothing more the right or left can through at him. He sticks to his guns, and that is so awesome it make me smile. Cain has lost my respect, as well has Bachmann. Romney can only win this nomination if the conservative vote is split up between four or more people. This is what Fox wants, so they are upping Cain, after weeks of pushing Romney. They have already admitted to building Perry up just to crush him, all by design. The establishment is gaming us, and we must fight back. This is the future of the republican party, and one I care about.

center77 (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 7:17PM EST (link)between the establishment (Fox, and the Bush boys = Rove) and the conservatives. Conservatives flocked to Perry, so Fox planned to crush him. Perry’s debate performance helped them. Fox has never stated that Rubio and Christie, both have immigration stances like Perry. Fox pays Palin, so they will probably have her run, all these moves from the states, everyone one of the establishment are moving pieces to try and get Romney early wins, so they can paint that narrative that he is the one. It is perplexing, because they know his many problems, and they should also know that Obama will paint him as, well, who he is. A job crushing , political flip flopping, east coast republican. He has so many problems, but maybe Fox like having all the people who are angry at Obama come to their network. The left wing will eat Romney up, and if people think they have not saved the real damaging things against him, then that is under estimating them. The left does not have much not already well known against Perry. He will be the strongest candidate, but he does not get a long with the Roves and O’Reilly’s, so he has to fight both establishments.

Why are IA and NH "forced" to do anything?
cwilson (Diary) Thursday, September 29th at 9:55PM EST (link)“Florida has decided to move up to January 31, 2012, which will force Iowa and New Hampshire to move up to the first of the month.”
The only thing “forcing” IA and NH to move up is their inflated sense of importance. Granted, I’m biased — from FL — but seriously: why should a small midwestern state whose voters will disqualify anyone who doesn’t promise SCADS of cash in the form of ethanol subsidies and mandates, deserve a permanent place at the front of the line?
For that matter, why do we worship at the feet of a TINY state packed full of NE RINOs and Massachusetts (Massachusetts!!!) transplants, and wait breathlessly for the votes of the 127 residents of Dixville Notch every four years?
And finally, under what rationale rule does SC, with its open primary, get the final say in who lives to Super Tuesday — especially with the SC history of gutter-street politics (just ask Nikki Haley about that. Or, as much as I despise the man’s politics, ask John McCain about SC’2000. John blamed the wrong man — I don’t believe W had anything to do with the scurrilous, racist attacks on McCain — but there is no question that those attacks occurred. In SC.)
The “first” (or first couple) of primaries should be assigned on a rotating basis, and not automatically granted to a select bunch of increasingly non-representative, self-important blowhard states.
End Rant.

HURRY UP - Sounds Like Obama
carolynr Thursday, September 29th at 10:06PM EST (link)Is this yet another ploy…BY A DIFFERENT PARTY to get their guy into place before people have time to hear the rest of the story. I was listening to Erick the other night and I happen to agree with him. He would like to have each and every candidate there in Atlanta and have a two hour conversation with them ABOUT EVERYTHING. This one and one half minute crap is garbage and then the pundits interpret it for you.
People…WE CANNOT AFFORD ANY MORE MODERATES AS A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE. We have mega problems in the USA and they don’t get solved by moving to the center left. That is what happens with compromise. Here’s the deal…Daddy Bush was a Moderate, GWB had a lot of big spending ideas..didn’t know how to use the veto pen. Mitt Romney is a big spender. Why doesn’t anyone ask him about the over run and the SEC investigation into the Big Dig in MA? Why. If we are going to counter-balance the left…we need a real Conservative..and someone that is wise to the left’s tricks. Look at Reagan … he believed Tip O’Neil and look at what happened with spending.
We had to have McCain…the moderates would vote for him. Well moderation is not going to get us out of the mess we are in…and people…we are in a mess like nobody’s business. We don’t even have a deficit of $15 trillion…the Fed has been lending money out the back door to Europe to bail out their banks…AND OURS AGAIN. No Congressional Oversight. DOES THAT SOUND LIKE WE NEED A MODERATE? Does that sound like we need a big spender. We cannot spend ourselves out of debt. Kenysian Economics DOES NOT WORK and Washington EVIDENCE PROVES THAT EVERYTHING THEY TOUCH TURNS TO A DISASTER.
Then we have a guy that says we will make Washington as inconsequential in your lives as possible. You all like that…right? Does he believe in centralized government (Perry)…NO. Does Romney…Yes he does…he lied in the last debate about healthcare and about education …AND THE PRESS NEVER LET YOU KNOW ABOUT IT EITHER. Oh..he wants healthcare offered by private companies…he just wants to administer it from DC. And then…that very day, he agreed with Obama concerning Race to The Top…Centralized Educational System in DC.
I know…the guy has a “pretty face”…but that’s all. Can he identify with the person that is living paycheck to paycheck…NOPE…BUT PERRY CAN. He was dirt poor growing up. Go read the Time Magazine article about him.
So…the State chairmen of the GOP are in a mighty hurry to get their state’s primary moved up…why…because that way you don’t get to hear all sides of the story…you only get snipits. No more Party controlling our pick…it’s time for the people to pick their president…and I hope they look at the evidence. THIS IS OUR LAST SHOT PEOPLE…WE NEED TIME AND EVIDENCE…NOT HURRY UP TALK. BTW…You do remember…that is how we got the stimulus, the bailout, Obamacare and he also wanted his supposed Jobs bill passed NOW. Does hurry up get it? Don’t let this happen…we need to hear all the candidates and their SOLUTIONS. We don’t need to hear about Obama…we know all about him…WHAT IS OUR FUTURE AND HOW WILL YOU GET US THERE.

A vote for Perry is a vote against Karl Rove and the Fox News nonsense
californiagold Thursday, September 29th at 11:57PM EST (link)Shame on Fox News for labeling themselves “Fair and Balanced”. Is there anyone on that network who has yet to get in a good punch on Rick Perry ? How convenient of them dumping Glenn Beck just before the republican debates started. How convenient of them having a bunch of ex Bush administration shills making digs on Perry to settle scores from years gone by.
For years conservatives have exposed network bias on CNN, MSNBC, CBS, etc…and for good reason. But if we are to have credibility, we must also expose Fox News for engaging in the same type of biased reporting we’ve condemned others for.
“all or nothing”
annplato Friday, September 30th at 1:54AM EST (link)is a dangerous gambler’s mind-set. All conservative, nothing but conservative may just get you another four years of Obama, and then that WILL BE THE END!
What is REALLY the first priority? Get rid of the nemesis in the WH, by hook or by crook! Pure conservatism WILL NOT DO IT! Solid “principles” WILL NOT DO IT!
“Be ye as wise as serpents and harmless as doves”. Chasing rainbows or perfection is not my aim, but get somewhere where at least there is a chance to continue the fight. Priority number two cannot be put ahead of priority number one. Who gets the “gold ring” is what we have to go for: who has the best shot to get into the WH! If he/she is straying, we still have the House and hopefully the Senate and behind them, pushing and cajoling will be “We the People”!
If anyone thinks that the job is done once the new President is installed, only shows superficial commitment and lack of understanding the mammoth job AFTERWARDS! We have to get united behind the most likely winner and then take it forward towards saving the salvageable. It will be a long, arduous and committed work to make wise decisions to get us out of the “ditch” (by now a deep hole!) and continue driving towards the goal of restoring out nation onto prosperity, security and Constitutional lawfulness that assures us freedom.
I cannot say for sure who that person will be. We cannot know which candidate can get us the WIN, but he/she cannot appear to be a strict, inflexible ideologue but will have to keep it under a cloak of “flexibility and compromise”.
There is too much at stake to gamble it ALL on ideology! I’ll take an ounce of practicality and common sense to a ton of purist ideology.

californiagold Saturday, October 1st at 4:09AM EST (link)There are two legitimate republican candidates…Romney and Perry. Of those two, Perry is less objectionable. Romney’s long record of big government liberalism would have the effect of dividing the republican party.
Agreed californiagold
Scope (Diary) Saturday, October 1st at 8:47AM EST (link)The problem is that everyone wants Obama gone so badly they will jump to the person who may be leading in the polls at the time, or to the one being shoved down our throats by all media including Fox, and that would be Romney. I seriously thought that after being stuck with McCain in 08, because the media shoved him on us, there would have been much wiser thinking this time. Apparently not so much.
I also agree with you that Fox must be exposed for it’s bias toward Romney. The Kurtz article that had quotes from Wallace and Baier strategizing on how they were going to set Perry up in the debate should have been carried everywhere. I know I linked it in as many places as possible around the web.
It may be possible that some at Fox know that we know what they are doing. I was shocked to hear some on the 5 at 5 show. One said they thought Romney’s new Vincente Fox ad was over the top. Another pointed out that it was poorly done, using white on white etc. Dana Perino actually agreed that Perry is right on immigration. Even Beckel cut out his hop-a-long-Perry rhetoric.
Doubt it will last, but we shall see.
