Republican Does Not Equal Conservative. Even in Texas.

It is nauseating to hear people tell me over the past 48 hours that Joe Straus, the Democrat backed Speaker of the Texas House, is a “conservative.” With redistricting at stake in a state the size of Texas, we need to come to terms with why Straus is not a conservative and should be defeated. Likewise, Republicans who vote for him will all need to be challenged in primaries.

Yes this is that big of an issue. And yes it is worth taking to the front page of a national political blog to focus on this one man in one state.

The people saying Joe Straus is conservative are the same people who’ve spent the past year trying repeatedly to shut out conservatives in the election and dress up moderates and liberals as conservatives.

It is not going to work.

Anyone who says Joe Straus is a conservative is either a fool or a liar.

I hate to be that blunt, but the truth sometimes must be.

Joe Straus has a 100% rating from NARAL, but the same people saying Straus is conservative also say he is pro-life. I’m sorry, but pro-lifers do not get 100% ratings from NARAL nor do their spouses sit on the boards of abortion organizations.

Pro-lifers are not honored by Planned Parenthood, but Joe Straus was.

Conservatives do not block laws to provide business tax exemptions to small businesses. But Joe Straus did.

Conservatives do not support McCain-Feingold style election laws. Joe Straus did.

Conservatives do not kill voter integrity laws requiring photo identification for voting. Joe Straus did.

Conservatives do not campaign for left-wing propagandists. Joe Straus did.

Joe Straus is not a conservative. He became Speaker of the Texas House by getting Democrats to support him. He has rewarded them thoroughly. It is now time Republicans punish Joe Straus and remove him from the Speaker’s position in Texas.

Below are the office numbers of key Texas House Republicans. Call them and politely ask them not just to oppose Joe Straus, but to support Ken Paxton. Let us know what they say. We will post the names of the undecideds and concentrate our efforts on them. Conservatives must defeat Joe Straus.

Nah les’ you wanna be called a carpetbagger (even from Georgia), please let us deal with it … even if we have to send the Democrats to Ardmore OK, a’gin.

Yikes!

annas Wednesday, November 17th at 6:50AM EST (link)

The so called conservatives seem to be running for cover–taking a voice vote on onearmarks so we dont know who supported it! That illegally re-elected senator Murkowski saying she will not honor the ban on earmarks. Now this–a non-conservative being supported even in Texas! This is going to take longer and be harder than we thought to weed out!

Good grief

I contacted Dwayne Bohac about this, as he is my guy.

I also brought up the importance of the upcoming redistricting and pleaded with him to let us out from under embarrassing predicament of being represented at the federal level by CongressWOMAN Sheila Jackson Lee.

You cannot be a Democrat and be a Conservative.....

txgeekgirl (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 7:38AM EST (link)

Oh – you can think and believe like a conservative on an issue – but overall – the bad always outweighs the good. Everything wrong with our moral code in this country stems from having no consequences for our actions – no accountability. Democrats believe in excuses, not accountability – in keeping people from failure and therefore from success.

Grief is good, when well-directed

GreyCloak (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 7:55AM EST (link)

The Honorable Sheila Jackson Lee was once the best-paid US Representative in Congress, by Enron. She has since “cleaned up” those contributions, which totaled around $80,000, maybe more. They were in her District.

Fortunately, members of Congress have NO say (or vote, at least) in redistricting States. This is left up to the State Assemblies, of which our Texas “Lege” is overwhelmingly Republican, as is our Executive.

Sheila got <a href=”http://www.texasgopvote.com/tags/sheila-jackson-lee”<70% of the vote in her District. Even Democrats deserve representation.

Give ‘em heck! Your Dwayne Bohac serves on the Legislature’s Election Committee and interned with Tom DeLay.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

That site is a little unclear.

Philip (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 9:08AM EST (link)

I was actually surprised when I got to the site. I met him at some function up at the Capitol a while back. I didn’t know much about him at the time but he seemed nice enough.

I didn’t find anything I had problems with, on a quick look at his site, except one thing. He doesn’t seem to clearly advocate either way for Ken Paxton or for someone else, Warren Chisum. He seems to be more interested in simply outing Strauss. He is does present two choices which in not a bad thing. That’s an observation not a moral evaluation.

I would recommend his site for a visit though, it’s pretty good, a little busy on the layout but good material.

True Also In Delaware

Donald Ayotte (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 8:16AM EST (link)

I like the headline and it is more than true in Delaware. Anew movement was started in Delaware a little more than a year ago. It has grown and become powerful and has empowered the Sussex County conservatives to grow in numbers and power. It has now spread to Kent County and threatens to also grow much bolder in the democratic and liberal conservative stronghold of New Castle County.
As all Americans know, we were beaten by New Castle’s democrats as well as that county’s left of center republicans.
GOP Chairman Tom Ross has been censured by Sussex County Republicans for leading the charge to defeat Christine O’Donnell. State Rep Tom Kovac, from New Castle County actually led the republicans for Chris Coons movement in New Castle County The only redeeming factor was that Kovac was defeated by the democrats in his run for reelection.

We continue to fight to reorganize and force Tom Ross to resign. After he resigns we can reorganize the state.

Nice report.

I humbly suggest this is good material for a diary!

I am definitely interested in the follow-through by conservatives — in every state.

Diary Comming

Donald Ayotte (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 9:42AM EST (link)

I have meeting tonight and this civil war in Delaware is getting nastier every day. Since I introduced the motion to the floor of the Sussex County GOP Committee, thing have gotten nastier and people now believe that GOP Chairman Tom Ross is gasping his last breath of life in his job. The censure passed by a 95 percent verbal vote of over two-hundred people in attendance.
They are scrambling for a new and more motivated Chairman, one that has the desire to move the party into a conservative direction. I’ve also recently spoken to Christine O’Donnell. She is staying involved and taking somewhat “a leading role” in the movement to elect conservatives.
“The fat lady hasn’t sung yet” and it is far from over. We in Delaware will have to fight hard but we are gaining support very quickly

It doesn’t sound like Erickson likes Straus too much!

Reason

edintexas Wednesday, November 17th at 10:52AM EST (link)

There is a reason for this – Straus is all hat and no cattle. He talks a good game, then acts like the typical RINO.

I’d love to make my displeasure known to Lance Gooden (TX House District 4, Kaufman and Henderson Counties). But since Gooden doesn’t take office until being sworn in at the start of the next session, and I can’t find good contact info for Gooden (the website listed is his campaign website, and the campaign ended with the Republican Primary since he had no challengers for the General Election). the e-Mail listed on the campaign website is inoperative. The telephone number listed on the website gets a recorder so I left a message of opposition to Straus, but don’t know if the recorder is being checked. The still current Rep, Betty Brown’s Austin office told me they have no way of contact with Gooden either,.

Thank you for giving me the one piece of information I needed.

Philip (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 8:42AM EST (link)

I read your post on this topic yesterday. It put me in a quandary and I tried to find out the most I could on both persons in a limited amount of time. I couldn’t make a decision.
You have changed that. Thank you.

NARAL is a buzz word, especially to eccentric Catholic Texans. It’s not as bad as being accused of being a Pelosi-worshiper like someone else has accused me of on this site (simply because I am Catholic) but it’s still pretty bad.

Mr. Erickson, sometimes it’s like your psychic or something. Please keep it up.

I need a reply to this really ignorant question.

Philip (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 9:39AM EST (link)

I am getting ready to make those calls. I’m going to be honest. It’s 8:30-ish here in TX 27 and I usually don’t do business calls before 9am. Sorry.

When calling local reps is it better to call the formers or the newly elected?

We have one incumbent, Todd Hunter (R), and the rest are the newly elected’s, all (R). I am asking this because of time constraints and while I love redstate, I have other things I also need to take care of.

I’ll check by after lunch (Texas Time).

Newly Elected

edintexas Wednesday, November 17th at 10:56AM EST (link)

If your Tx 27 House Rep is newly elected, you need to try and find contact info for that person. Your current/former Rep does not get to vote on the Speaker in the next Session. See my frustrated reply above.

Thanks E.

Philip (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 2:24PM EST (link)

Tx 27 is the congressional, I meant State 33, 34, 35, and 36 in my area. Mine new one is Connie Scott but will call all.

Rep Doug Miller supports Joe Straus

Russ Martin (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 9:45AM EST (link)

I live in one of the most conservative districts in Texas and Doug Miller is my rep. He ran unopposed this last election. I emailed Doug Miller’s office last week and asked him who he supports for Speaker. I never received a response.

I called his office this morning and the person answering the phone stated that Doug Miller supports Joe Straus for Texas Speaker. I asked that he give consideration to supporting Ken Paxton as he more accurately reflects the conservative values of our district.

I voted for Doug Miller when he first ran for office and in this last election. I will not vote for him next election and I will actively work to see that he is challenged in the Republican primary.

Joe Straus is a joke, and Doug Miller should be ashamed.

This isnt a big deal

Goldwater_Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 9:53AM EST (link)

Straus is a mouthpiece for the GOP powerbrokers in the house. He isnt a Craddick. Which means now with a strong majority of conservatives in the house, he will be a strong conservative this session. I’m not saying he is impressive, I’m just saying he will do what his minders tell him and this time his minders are all conservatives.

Could you cite for that, please?

to him either independently deciding to “grow a pair” and ignore his handlers, or to get a new set of friends (i.e. get bribed, paid off; ex. offered a lot of money and support to run for a statewide office) and in either of those scenarios we’re left with a Dem where we could have had a more solid Conservative.

The redistricting is a huge thing, Goldwater – especially in a booming state like Texas. Do not think for a picosecond that there isn’t a trick the Dems will try…

You and Obama both misread the election

Goldwater_Conservative (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 2:40PM EST (link)

if you think the only thing going on was the tea party. There is a strong national conservative movement going on. The tea party is the new kids on the block and like most new kids that think they own the place they are the most loud and make all the headlines, but the real movement is much bigger and deeper than just them.

Please cite where I said that the Tea Party was the only thing going on?

eburke (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 4:12PM EST (link)

One, my comment referenced TeaPartiers, not “the Tea Party” because there is no Tea Party (if you don’t get what is meant by that, then that would explain the basis for next point).

Two, I penned what I penned because of your ongoing dismissive attitude toward said non-existent “Tea Party” both in this post and previously; and,

Three, I would be interested in you identifying the other elements of the ‘strong national conservative movement’ to which you would ascribe the results of this election since you have spared no effort in denigrating the non-existant “Tea Party” but have yet to identify your view of what happened.

So, based on your posting history and your comments on this thread, I can’t decided if you are someone who’s jealous of the non-existent “Tea Party’s” new found ‘notoriety’, one of those people who just thinks he’s always the smartest, most informed, most connected guy in the room, or whether you’re just a really good concern troll.

Obviously the primary is different from general elections

calgacus (Diary) Thursday, November 18th at 12:14PM EST (link)

The primary elections show that the Republicans need to be strong conservatives – esp. on economics. That is the message of the Senate primaries in Alaska, Colorado, Utah, Kentucky, Florida. In the general election, the Tea Party played less of a role – but should (hopefully) become the dominant wing of the Republican party.

NOT going to happen

Menlo (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 11:23AM EST (link)

Unless stripped of his ability to choose committee chairs, that would not be possible, What’s more, we don’t need an arrogant snob in a leadership position, “conservative” or not. And Democrats don’t unanimously unite behind any conservative.

The facts are though that no one else has a prayer of beating Straus. Enough RINOs have their minds made up.

It is insidious, The bad part is they fool us, we thought Kay Bailey was conservative enough for a while. ihateliberals Wednesday, November 17th at 3:26PM EST (link)

what a Liberal and Conservative are. The liberals are trying everything they can to hid the fact that they are lib’s. some 0of them have been being elected as Republicans because they run on the Republican ticket. In most states you can vote a straight ticket so these guys squeeze by. The “We the people” movement has slowed that down by not yet cured the problem. When Bush took the election in 2000 he started the move of kicking conservatives out of the party. Karl Rove, John McCain and Dick Cheney for just a few made sure that people like McCain stayed in office. The poor stupid people of AZ re-elected him knowing that he was a RINO.

Definitions: Liberalism= Communism & socialism all rolled into one.

Conservatism = small government, power to the people, supports free markets provides the poor with jobs instead of welfare and the list can go on.

So let's stop using the term.

momofthecastle (Diary) Thursday, November 18th at 5:33AM EST (link)

Liberal is out-dated, and confusing. It was used from the beginning as a cover-up for “progressive” or “socialist.” Let’s just start using accurate terms.

Dick Armey chooses sides in Texas speaker's race

izoneguy (Diary) Wednesday, November 17th at 5:23PM EST (link)

Dick Armey chooses sides in Texas speaker’s race

Former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey has endorsed Rep. Ken Paxton, R-McKinney, for Texas House speaker. Paxton and Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, are challenging incumbent Joe Straus, R-San Antonio for the top leadership spot in the 150-member chamber.

Armey, who now leads Freedomworks, sent the following letter:
On November 2nd Texans spoke out loudly in favor of lower taxes, less government and more freedom. It was a historic election for fiscal conservatives, and the Texas House of Representatives now has 22 more Republican lawmakers. The election was a conservative mandate for Texas, and the leadership of the Texas House should reflect that mandate.

We have a great opportunity to have true fiscal conservatives as Speaker and committee chairmen in the Texas House. These influential leadership positions will be key to moving our conservative agenda forward in the next legislative session in Austin. That is why it’s so important that members of the Texas House choose a conservative Speaker in their upcoming election. To that end, FreedomWorks is proud to support state Representative Ken Paxton (R-McKinney) as the next Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.

Rep. Paxton has a 100% rating from Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, and is the highest rated lawmaker by The Young Conservatives of Texas. He is a committed conservative who will lead the Republicans in the Texas House toward a fiscally conservative policy agenda for years to come. Please join us by TAKING ACTION to encourage your state representative to support Ken Paxton as the next Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.

This is a great moment for conservatives in Texas, and we cannot allow big government Republicans to lead us down the wrong path in the Texas House. Please write your representative to support Ken Paxton as the next Speaker, and follow up with a phone call today!

Sincerely,

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Joe Strauss is mentioned at the bottom of this article

Rush covered this today on his show. Disregard the birther spin in the article but get down to where Strauss is not considered a conservative by this fellow either.

I was anti-Obama before it was cool.

A well meant suggestion for the Author.

Philip (Diary) Thursday, November 18th at 11:19AM EST (link)

I apologize if that’s not appropriate.

First may I offer my thanks for your site. I am truly grateful for opportunities and lessons it provides me. Thank you.

Before I make my suggestion I would like to apprise you of some aspects of the current situation in my area. The persons I have spoke with, while polite and respectful, were concerned, at this time, with things like offices, knick knacks, parties and social events, and, of course, The Holidays. I was respectfully reminded that the Election was ‘a ways off’. When someone ‘knew my people’ as we say here at times, I got a little more dirt however the story is basically the same.

My suggestion: It might be better if we knew the exact date of the Election, which I can’t get a straight answer on here in Texas, or locate information on, and that you repeat your effort closer to the above mentioned date. In closing, I would like to add that I think it is an excellent effort. It got me going anyways. It has provided me with some handy information. I still hope to keep up the effort. Thanks.

"Republicans" for Straus

raysmith Saturday, November 20th at 7:09PM EST (link)

I am sorry to report that our representative Doug Miller, and our former representative (before the last round of redistricting) Harvey Hildebran, both apparently are supporting Straus. I have sent Miller a respectful email asking that he support Paxton instead of Straus, but have not yet received a reply. More will be revealed ….
