Barack Obama’s Attempted Character Assassination of Koch Industries

Obama’s coordinated character assassination campaign against anyone who disagrees with him strikes of Soviet style politics. . . . When Darryl Issa takes over … the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform … this will be one more thing he will need to investigate.”

When the President of the United States, in prepared remarks, launches a broadside against any organization, it is no accident. In the case of Barack Obama and left, we have a new target for this White House — yet another company whose owners take issue with Barack Obama destroying the country.

On August 9th, speaking in Austin, TX, Barack Obama said, “Right now all around this country there are groups with harmless-sounding names like Americans for Prosperity, who are running millions of dollars of ads against Democratic candidates all across the country. And they don’t have to say who exactly the Americans for Prosperity are. You don’t know if it’s a foreign-controlled corporation. You don’t know if it’s a big oil company, or a big bank. You don’t know if it’s a insurance company that wants to see some of the provisions in health reform repealed because it’s good for their bottom line, even if it’s not good for the American people.”

It was the planned launch of what appears to be a well coordinated and long term assault on Koch Industries, the owners of which fund Americans for Prosperity.

I wrote about the Obama White House engaging in the politics of personal destruction last year.

Ben Smith, writing in the Politico, tells us Barack Obama’s allies meet every morning by conference call at 8:45 a.m. to build their talking points. The calls operate as a left-wing character assassination squad run by John Podesta of the Center for American Progress (“CAP”). Podesta was also Co-Chairman of the Obama-Biden Transition Project. In addition, CAP’s political wing runs a website called Think Progress, which coordinates online messaging among leftwing bloggers.

We see this happening yet again here. Obama’s coordinated character assassination campaign against anyone who disagrees with him strikes of Soviet style politics. Saul Allinsky would be proud.

For perspective, the Koch brothers have been funding right-of-center and largely libertarian causes since the 1970′s. David Koch was the Libertarian Vice Presidential nominee in 1980. That’s right — against Reagan. This is nothing new for the Koch family. Through Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush the Koch’s have been politically engaged, sometimes even against Republican Presidents.

But Barack Obama is so used to demagoguing and is the first Democratic President to really believe the rich are evil, and not just preach it for the base, he needs an enemy. The Koch family will be that enemy.

The New Yorker has an eleven page, 6,000 word article on David and Charles Koch, who own Koch Industries. The article, “Covert Operations,” appears in the August 30, 2010 copy of the magazine. In other words, this article was being manufactured well before Mr. Obama launched the opening salvo on August 9, 2010.

Writing in yesterday’s Playbook, Mike Allen referenced the article, highlighting a passage that David Axelrod, Mr. Obama’s advisor, is concerned about the Koch brothers. Mike Allen has more today.

Most troubling, the New Yorker cites as objective sources both the Center for American Progress and Media Matters without ever bothering to mention they are left-wing sources with biases and competing interests against those of the Koch brothers.

As the same time, Mother Jones is attacking the Smithsonian for taking Koch money, the Center for American Progress that the New Yorker relied on as an objective source, is attacking the Kochs in the Boston Globe, they are also attacking David Koch directly, and even Greenpeace is getting in on the act.

This is a coordinated character assassination against Koch Industries and the Koch brothers for daring to use their money to prevent the destruction of the American economy at the hand of a bunch of effete socialists in the White House.

When Darryl Issa takes over as Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in the House of Representatives, this will be one more thing he will need to investigate. It is way too convenient to be coincidental that Mr. Obama attacks Americans for Prosperity and, within days, the broadside is extended not just by left wing groups, but allegedly objective journalists.

The left needs a boogeyman now that few remember Richard Mellon Scaife. They’ve set their sights on the Koch Brothers. They are using the White House itself to go after them. The left must be stopped.

This is just the latest messaging front for those pushing the DISCLOSE Act, which would force private organizations of citizens to turn over their member and donor lists to the government if they have the temerity to speak up in politics on behalf of their members.

You caught a glimpse of this in Nancy Pelosi’s call last week for investigations into Americans who oppose the Cordoba House project (AKA “Ground Zero Mosque”).

Among many other things, the First Amendment does not permit the government to launch investigations because politicians don’t like being criticized or just want to know who it is that is criticizing them.

So, it’s OK for the President to demonize the Koch brothers for their support of the other party, while George Soros almost single handidly has founded/co-founded and funded the majority of Leftist/Progressive groups in this country, including the Center for American Progress.

I doubt that Darrell Issa will be alive long enough to get through the list of investigations that will be required to expose the vast amount of corruption and lawlessness that has been the cornerstone of the Obama administration.

Ditto, by the way, for that “shadowy group” called Organizing for America.

But I really have to take exception to this comment of Erick’s:

“When Darryl Issa takes over as Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in the House of Representatives, this will be one more thing he will need to investigate. No, no, no, a thousand times no! Last week Nancy Pelosi was being ripped here (and rightly so) for her police-state thuggery in demanding investigations of those who dared to dissent from her approved position regarding Cordoba House (AKA “Ground Zero Mosque”). Do you really want to emulate that?

Demanding investigations because some groups like Center for American Progress are coordinating talking points with lefty groups and getting articles placed is a terrible idea. The First Amendment rights of these groups is just as important as those of anyone else.

I do not want to have FBI agents interviewing John Podesta about his activities, the journalists and activists he talks to, any more than I want to answer questions from an investigator about Grover’s Wednesday Morning meetings, or my role at the American Legislative Exchange Council, or my connection to State Policy Network.

The ability to spend and contribute money freely to whatever cause one wishes, and to coordinate political messages and strategy with one’s allies, WITHOUT the government looking over your shoulder and hauling you before a Congressional committee to be “accountable” for your exercise of the First Amendment, is a cornerstone of our free society. Under no circumstances should Issa or anyone else be holding hearings and investigating whatever activities the Obama White House, Podesta, and their allies are engaging in regarding this matter.

I respectfully disagree with your assertion

theloneranger Monday, August 23rd at 9:41AM EST (link)

It’s one thing to investigate individuals because they stand against an unpopular issue. It’s quite another to investigate an administration for its coordination with a supposedly independent outside group. What Obama is doing with Podesta is not an exercise of First Amendment rights, it is an assault on the Constitution and a de facto slow-motion coup de etat. And for that, there should be investigations, charges, and trials. I agree with the first sentence of your last paragraph, but wholeheartedly disagree with the last sentence, because their actions are destroying our Republic.

“I will not stand by and watch this great country destroy itself under mediocre leadership, that drifts from one crisis to the next, eroding our national will and purpose.” – Ronald Reagan, July 17, 1980.

coordination is protected

seandparnell (Diary) Monday, August 23rd at 9:53AM EST (link)

There is no legal requirement or presumption that the White House cannot coordinate with “supposedly independent outside groups.” What do you think Reagan did with the Heritage Foundation? Or Bush with Americans for Tax Reform and Grover’s Wednesday Meetings? Do you think they should have been investigated as well?

Working with allies to promote a political agenda, even one you find objectionable, is at the core of First Amendment rights. Those rights don’t disappear simply because it’s Obama and CAP working together. Launching an investigation simply because Obama and CAP are singing the same tune, and getting others to as well, would trample on the First Amendment.

The 1st Amendment protects "We the people" ...

riverking Monday, August 23rd at 12:51PM EST (link)

… from our government and not vice versa. An administration working with allies to promote a political agenda is not protected by the First Amendment when “working with” includes financial support, providing information not available to others, assisting in any way with the suppression of contrary viewpoints, or, worst of all, looking the other way when supporters violate the law. I believe this administration is guilty of every one of these practices.

theloneranger is entirely correct when he says, “their actions are destroying our Republic.”

RiverKing

Well, you got this right...

seandparnell (Diary) Monday, August 23rd at 3:24PM EST (link)

“The 1st Amendment protects we the people from our government and not vice versa.”

But it most certainly is protected by the 1st Amendment if the Obama administration chooses to work with allies and share information with them and not others.

If the administration is working to suppress the contrary viewpoints (and they have), or looking the other way when supporters violate the law (*cough* New Black Panthers *cough*), then by all means have all the hearings you want.

But the fact that the Obama administration chooses to work with allies, coordinate activities, share information, and jointly develop talking points in pursuit of their agenda, is 100% protected by the 1st Amendment. If you pursue the path of investigations, a la Pelosi, because you don’t like the speech, then you are leaving the door wide open for the next Democratic Congress (or this one I suppose – they’ve got at least 4 months left) to begin investigating the Heritage Foundation, National Rifle Association, National Right to Life, Competitive Enterprise Institute, Chamber of Commerce, and any other group that THEY didn’t like coordinating with the Bush White House, or Minority Leader McConnell’s office, or anybody else.

Be extremely careful what you wish for, because if you get what you’re asking for here I can guarantee that Erick Erickson is going to be testifying before Henry Waxman about “dangerous” coordination between RedState and Republican officeholders, while FBI agents comb through his e-mails, bank accounts, and phone records.

What or who is being investigated?

riverking Monday, August 23rd at 3:43PM EST (link)

You suggest the possibility of investigation by the Democratic Congress of the Heritage Foundation, etc. and I agree completely that this would be anti-Constitutional infringement of First Amendment protections. I understand Erick to be suggesting that Issa should/would investigate members of the current administration and Congress who are actively participating in and even directing the activities of organizations like MoveOn.org, the Center for American Progress, and the alphabet media.

There comes a point where a private citizen’s First Amendment protected actions and speech becomes, from a member of government, a violation of his oath to protect and defend the Constitution.

RiverKing

pretty low threshold

seandparnell (Diary) Monday, August 23rd at 4:11PM EST (link)

Are you really willing to say that elected officials “actively participating in… the activities of organizations” should serve as an invitation to an investigation?

Because that happens to encompass just about every outreach effort that any administration has ever engaged in. Reagan talked with the Chamber of Commerce about lowering tax rates, and discussed how to best present the case for tax cuts? Investigation! Bush 41 talked with National Right to Life about nominating Clarence Thomas, and how to ensure he was confirmed by the Senate? Investigation! Bush 43 talked with the National Federation of Independent Businesses about the death tax and how to kill it? Investigation! Mitch McConnell briefs RedState? Investigation!

You are inviting a disaster. Public officials have every right to talk with whomever they want, about whatever topic they want (well, not bribery or treason – the real kind of treason, not the “your policies are terrible” kind of treason) without it triggering an investigation. And remember, you can’t just investigate the officeholder – you have to investigate the person they talked with. Hence, in your world, Erick gets to testify to Waxman about all those “inappropriate” contacts he’s had with Republicans over the past few years. No thanks.

with the Democrat Party and Comrade Obama’s lackeys. They launder money between their various non-profits and the government and among themselves and, especially, the unions. Unions use the “educational” non-profits to launder dues money into politics that they would otherwise be unable to spend directly on politics without the potential for charges and lawsuits, at least in the Red States. Most of them are less than scrupulous about how they account for money and how they use money in politics. Government action or citizen action?

odmartin Monday, August 23rd at 3:27PM EST (link)

Mr. Parnell: I understand that the objection to your sugggested laissez faire exercise of First Amendment rights to be that, on the one hand, Obama and his minions are engaging in government-sponsored and taxpayer-subsidized propaganda, whereas the other side is made up of private citizens using our own funds to criticize. In other words, we have to pay for both sides of the argument. The “investigation” would be whether Obama friends and advocates are using taxpayer time and money to fault private industry or citizens.

can't separate it that easily

seandparnell (Diary) Monday, August 23rd at 4:24PM EST (link)

As you may have noticed, the current administration and the Democratic majority have an agenda that, to many, consists of little else than using taxpayer time and money to fault private industry or citizens. Should we also be investigating Nancy Pelosi for coordinating with, say, AARP on Social Security issues?

Meanwhile, of course, there’s a similar case to be made that many Republicans spend taxpayer dollars and time to fault unions, environmentalists, etc. Investigations into Senator Inhoffe for talking with the American Petroleum Institute on drilling in ANWR?

This is how politics works. Democrats stand up, on taxpayer time and money, and say “these are bad people, so we need to pass this law or spend this money” while Republicans stand up and say “No, these others are the bad people, so we need to oppose this law or not spend this money.” Press releases, speeches, floor statements – all part of the official process, indispensable to elected officials in the performance of their duties. Are you going to make it illegal for the President or a member of Congress to criticize a business, or union, or person? Obviously not.

There are some real and legitimate restrictions on what the White House and other offices can do or say – Popular Senator X can’t put out a press release from her official office endorsing a candidate for the House, for example.

But officeholders are totally free, as they must be, to coordinate with outside groups on these types of things. Do you not want the House Republicans to be able to work together with the Chamber of Commerce in making the case for extending the Bush tax cuts?

Well said response. There are any number of areas where this administration has strayed constitutionally. At some point the courts or our Congress will take these up.
However, and in addition, there are a number of instances of practices and political/parliamentary devices were used to pass legislation that was borderline criminal. I place the auto industry take over and specifically the handling of the shutdown of “selected” auto sales dealerships in this category
.
Also, I can find nowhere in any body of law the authority assumed by the BHO administration allowing them to confiscate stocks and bonds from several groups of investors and hand it over, along with control of a formerly privately held Enterprise, to one or more Unions. This is the tip of the iceberg.

Yes, I think Issa has more than enough reason to “Investigate” a “criminal” Enterprise of monumental proportions. Unfortunately it is our entire Government at all levels. This in no way stoops to the ridiculous levels of the “which hunt” proposed by the chief witch herself, Nancy Pelosi.

Nixon resigned the Presidency largely because of Administration “enemies lists” and slush funds to finance “dirty tricks” to influence voters. What Obama is doing is no different from what Nixon did that led to his forced resignation. Except that Obama is better organized, better funded, and better connected.

Are there no longer any waves of shock and shame that our President would stoop or bow to these depths? Are we numb and placid due to chronic overstimulation? Does it even matter that our President is a liar and “…a crook”? Should Obama suffer the fate of Nixon?

And what about all the taxpayer money given to cronies to promote the Obama Presidency and agenda? Why is my hard-earned money being spent by the government to try and convince me that what I’m diametrically opposed to, is something I really should support? What if everyone stopped paying taxes, would the government be forced to stop spending?

He read your comments of his brother’s book… So I am sure Barack’s minions will have your name in their daily report.

If you keep being critical of The One you may make the “attack” list yourself, Eric!

(Good job!)

Here’s to the hope of having you Guest Host behind that Golden Microphone one day soon!!!

“Even when you fall on your face, you’re still moving forward.”

I want on Obama's hit list

King Obama’s attacks on Americans for Prosperity will do what it did for Joe The Plumber, Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the palm size electronic gadgets he told us not to pay attention to. All are better off now than when he told us not to to pay attention to them. How do I get on his hit list. I would like the attention and could use the money.

Gray tones

There is a tone of relativity creeping into this discussion of free speech. I agree where free speech is concerned I tend black and white if moral values are to be honored. Keep speech unfettered by relative arguments. Focus on acts for determining probable cause for investigations. There is no shortage of targets for action, one example, the way the black panther investigation was mishandled.
