Bill Connor: Lt. Governor for South Carolina

Truth be told, I’ve wanted to be delicate in other South Carolina races because I haven’t wanted people to think my candidates are somehow Nikki Haley’s candidates too. They most certainly are not, but I know some people may think otherwise.

There are, however, a couple of other races in South Carolina that are on my radar. One is the Lt. Governor’s race and Bill Connor.

I rarely dabble in Lt. Governor races, but I had been thinking that should Nikki Haley become Governor of South Carolina, hopefully she will not be cursed with a snake in the grass Lt. Governor like Mark Sanford has had.

Of all the candidates in the race for Lt. Governor, the one who has stood out for me as different from the establishment has been Bill Connor. I actually knew very little about him for the longest time, but it turns out he is actually a very good friend of one of my best friends — the guy you can directly blame for me leaving my law practice to do RedState full time. Bill Connor and this friend of mine were at the Citadel together and my friend asked me to take a look. I like what I saw.

Connor is a veteran and recipient of a Bronze Star after serving in Afghanistan. Like Nikki Haley, he describes himself as a conservative before he is a Republican.

Were I in South Carolina, I’d certainly be supporting Bill Connor for Lt. Governor.

I like him

Him and Haley will make a great young reform oriented conservative team .

I'm leaning towards him - BUT

on behalf of all the honest, hard-working, rodent-eating snakes in the grass in our state, I must protest the libelous comparison to the current Lt. Gov. in the strongest possible terms.

Hey now, Jeff Gordon is a fine Lt. Gov.

***JUST KIDDING!!!***

Lt. Gov Speed Racer lost what little respect I had for him (I know his sister through a friend of a friend – sorta) when the Mark Sanford debacle started last year. Going on TV and promising not to run for SCGov if Sanford would just step down (wink-wink) made me loose it. He was such a snake-oil salesman in that interview. He was completely disingenuous and everyone could see it. That, coupled with his inability to engage his brain/mouth filter makes him the Joe Biden of SC Politics.

And BTW, he is not “Tea-Party” and was certainly never “Tea-Party before there was a Tea-Party”, regardless of what Gov Huckabee says.

Go, Speed Racer, Go – away!

Any thoughts on the SC Treasurer and Comptroller?

shadowtax (Diary) Wednesday, May 26th at 11:52AM EST (link)

I had the opportunity to speak with Nikki Haley in the fall. She explained to me how weak the Governor’s office is in SC, specifically when it comes to spending. Mark Sanford was the first governor (in a long time, if not ever) to propose an executive budget.

The State is unique in that so much power is heald by the South Carolina Budget Control Board. The Board is made up of the Governor, the Treasurer, the Comptroller General, the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and the Chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee. As you can see, the Legislature has more influence than the Governor, unless the Treasurer and Comptroller side with the Governor against the legislature.

With that in mind, do any of the candidates for Treasurer or Comptroller look to be natural allies for fiscal restraint?

I think that these two offices may be more important to the success of a Haley administration than the Lt. Governor.

Dick Cheney for Gresham Barrett

Cheney aligned himself with Gresham Barrett. Rick Santorum campaigned for Barrett last weekend. Santorum and Cheney back the GOP establishment candidates.

Many liberals would be screaming “Code Name” as soon as he gets on the ballot.

Just goes to prove...

… liberalism is a form of brain damage. I mean, there’s a whole different vowel in there… if they can’t tell the difference…

Oh wait.

Clearly, liberal-arts Wheaton College in Norton, Mass must be the same as liberal-arts-plus-christianity Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL…

Yeah, this could be a problem. Maybe he should go by Will.
