Replacing the Old Guard

Fifteen Republican Senators voted against Jim DeMint’s measure to ban earmarks in the Senate.

Those fifteen were:

  1. Alexander (R-TN)
  2. Bond (R-MO)
  3. Bunning (R-KY)
  4. Cochran (R-MS)
  5. Collins (R-ME)
  6. Gregg (R-NH)
  7. Hutchison (R-TX)
  8. Inhofe (R-OK)
  9. Lugar (R-IN)
  10. Murkowski (R-AK)
  11. Roberts (R-KS)
  12. Shelby (R-AL)
  13. Snowe (R-ME)
  14. Voinovich (R-OH)
  15. Wicker (R-MS)

Senator Bob Bennett, who denounced the measure to a RedState contributor, did not vote at all.

Friends, we can change the Republican Caucus in the United States Senate. But we have to unite behind the real small government conservatives out there. We must get on the same page to improve our own.

Here is the list. We need these guys:

Ken Buck in Colorado
Chuck DeVore in California
Michael Williams in Texas
Marco Rubio in Florida
Rand Paul in Kentucky
Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania
Danny Tarkanian in Nevada
Marlin Stutzman in Indiana
Mike Lee in Utah

And if we can, I say we go with Ovide LaMontagne in New Hampshire and Christine O’Donnell in Delaware. Let’s go all and all in for small government conservatives. This year is our last best chance in a long time to get a slate of solid conservatives.

Congratulations on your new job. It is heartwarming to hear of success coming to those who have worked for it and taken risks to get there. That is what the American Dream is all about.

Please help me understand how we reconcile (the word of the day!) all of our efforts to put conservatives in our government positions, with others who claim that once this bill passes America changes forever to become socialist with no turning back.

marshmom (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 10:19PM EST (link)

He has done several things recently that just can not be overlooked.
He had an earmark in the “stimulus” for “Catfish Genome Mapping” and is working with Dodd to give the Fed more power.
I just emailed him and told him his actions are unforgivable and this is too important a time in our nation’s history for someone like him to hold a Republican position in such a conservative state.
We need true conservatives. Not old softies like Shelby. Sessions, our other senator, is another story. He’s a solid, reliable conservative (so far).
I’m ashamed that Shelby is part of the problem.

Sessions is the man!

to anyone who would listen for the last couple of years. He started out as a Democrat and sad to say just never fully developed into a conservative. He was pretty high on the list of takers from Fanny Mae & Freddie Mac and love to spend, even though he brings a lot of money home. I’ve told him more than once that I don’t care how much bacon he sends to AL, the spending has got to stop. Sessions is on track most of the time, but he got his fair share of my wrath yesterday about his vote to fund the Boys & Girls Club. I asked for an explanation of his vote in writing and will share when I get it. I told him that I’m sick of a 75%-80% conservative and that I want and expect more from him.

I’m backing all of them except Buck and Paul. I have my hesitations about Paul, and in the case of Norton vs. Buck, I find them both to be acceptable candidates.

However, I’m not sold at all on LaMontagne or O’Donnell. Is there anything that Ayotte has done that would indicate she won’t be a solid conservative voice in the Senate? She’s polling very strongly, and strikes me as a solid addition. As for O’Donnell, she’s a past loser, and while Castle doesn’t impress me, Delaware’s a key step in getting the Senate back. With the Democrats showing there is no depths they won’t sink to in support of their agenda, I’m loath to risk a seat like that. Castle will destroy Coons, and he should be a safe vote against the worst elements of the Dem agenda. Not to mention a vote for (hopefully) Majority Leader DeMint.

These are the only two cases where I do believe that the Conservative candidate is weaker in the general. In cases like DeVore, Stutzman, or Rubio, they’re just as strong or stronger.

Norton is not a good option

Jane Norton supported Ref C a couple of years back. Ref C was the largest tax increase in Colorado history. If she is going to support a massive tax increase in Colorado do you trust her on a national level?

socobird (Diary) Thursday, March 18th at 3:46AM EST (link)

Norton supported Ref C & D, the largest tax increase in Colorado history, although D did not pass. Norton is directly asked why she supported Ref C and has never come clean and said why she supported it.(Read story below)

Here areare few of the donors who advocated to put Ref C & D on the ballot:
Denver Chamber of Commerce…..$708,000
Pat Stryker…………………………$280,000(Coda)One of the biggest lib’s in the state.
Colorado Education Association….$250.000

Jane Norton defends her support of Ref C

by David K. Williams, Jr. | 12:48 pm, January 29, 2010
According to an article by John Tomasic of the Colorado Independent (“GOP Senate candidate Norton goes on the record: ‘I’ve not been a lobbyist’“), Republican Senate candidate Jane Norton recently explained her support of Referendum C when she was Lieutenant Governor thusly:

She explained her vote in favor of the Colorado Referendum C tax increases, referencing the state’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights. “Referendum C was TABOR in action. I was part of an administration that cut taxes 43 times…. But when revenues fell by 17 percent and we instituted across the board spending cuts, froze capital expenditures– all the things the governor knew would be important to get our budget on track and balanced, he decided to go to a vote of the people, and that’s the beauty of Ref C: It allows you to do that. So the people spoke on that… I’m a strong supporter of TABOR… unlike what’s happening with Gov. Ritter in circumventing the people’s will.”

What she says is accurate. TABOR allows for increased taxes if the voters approve of the increase. Ref C asked the voters to let the state government raise taxes, and it passed. Her criticism of Ritter is also accurate. He is trying to raise taxes without seeking voter approval in violation of TABOR. She dodges the important point, however. By supporting Ref C, she supported higher taxes. And that, my friends, is the point.

Earmarks Are a Pindrop Issue To Me

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 10:15PM EST (link)

In reality it has nothing to do with spending since the money is already being llocated. Earmarks are a method of allocation.

Its the spending, not how the money is allocates that matters.

If we ban earmarks, does that mean that we support spending by unelected beaurocratic, shadow government officials.

As Fred Thompson said, earmarks are “a drop in the bucket”. They make no difference on the debt or the deficit.

So much going on that is critical. This is McCain turf.

I can't agree Swamp

Doc Holliday (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 10:20PM EST (link)

this dime has two sides. If Senators did not have the power to earmark, would they be so excited about government spending? particularly Republicans so called conservatives?

earmarks are how the congresscritters buy votes, you take that away, that takes away a lot of incentive to waste our money.

Molon Labe!

There May Be Truth To That

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 10:28PM EST (link)

But a couple facts still exist. Earmarks make up less than one percent of the budget. It is still inconsequential to the big picture

And beaurocrats are a bigger enemy of conservatism and the Republic than even the worse elected official.

I know people hate earmarks, but why people are so content letting that money go to some “Czar” and the shady Department heads is beyond me.

Yeah, lets cut spending, but if the money is already spent, I’d rather have Jim Inhofe directing those funds than a shadow government radical like Van Jones.

I sir am far from content

Doc Holliday (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 10:37PM EST (link)

but we need real small government conservatives in power. Those that like to play the Lord of the Manor by doling out alms probably don’t fit the bill.

I doubt many would match my plan for the bureaucrats. I would start by abolishing the Department of Education and then start cutting other departments (except Defense) at least 10 percent a year down to at least half their current budgets. Even state and defense would be changed to reward savings and effectiveness. And we would purge the State department of all radicals and leftists.

Molon Labe!

Wonderful

youthgrunt (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 10:53PM EST (link)

if the big opposition to earmarks is missing the bigger point as you point out. We can fix earmarks (which should be fixed) and not make an iota of difference. If we were to fix unconstitutional spending and not earmarks we would make a difference.

But they do make a nice target even if they aren’t substantive.

…who needs Democrats? Seriously, the old guard Republicans are largely responsible for the current welfare state for refusing to challenge the Left’s basic premise that the government should solve our problems. Instead of telling the Democrats that the problems are not the responsibility of the federal government they accepted the premise and simply negotiated for a smaller solution. A solution the Democrats were only too eager to accept and then grow in later years. The old guard must go for they are the enablers of BIG government.

When Dick Lugar first arrived in D. C., he was a solid conservative. Unfortunately, the cultural miasma that pervades our capital has slowly altered his brain chemistry. He now sees himself as some sort of International Statesman and a Wise Old Man of the Senate. Actually addressing the needs and desires of his Hoosier constituents appears to be beneath his dignity. It’s such a shame. The perpetual ego-stroking that occurs in Washington destroys the minds of all but the strongest.

It is truly shameful that both the MS Senators are on that list.

Scott Tuesday, March 16th at 11:08PM EST (link)

MS has always had a terrible group of pork loving middle of the road Senators. I have recently joined the Republican club in my county, and I am working towards a seat on the executive committee. The sad thing is that the “Republicans” in MS are truly apathetic. They have no drive whatsoever towards conservative goals and it is very difficult to come in as a new person and move anyone against these squishes.

Scott,

KEEP IT UP!!! Bring YOUR friends and family! Don’t get discouraged! At least they are probably moe conservative then lets say a Republican club in New England or the Midwest! GOOD LUCK!!!

I’m surprised to see Senator Imhofe on the list as well as some of these other Senators. I agree that earmark reform is important because despite being a small amount of total spending it goes to the basic principle of Conservatism; not wasting tax payer money. I am hopeful that we can elect Conservatives who will stand on principle.

I see Lamar! made the list...again

Praying (Diary) Tuesday, March 16th at 11:37PM EST (link)

Talk about your frustrating senator! He was GREAT during the health care faux-summit a few weeks back, and every so often he will really toe the conservative line, getting my hopes up that he’s finally “got it” – and then he will turn around and do something totally RINO. Unfortunately, he’s not up for election until 2014, so we’ll just have to keep hounding him to do the right thing, knowing that every so often, he actually will. And the rest of the time…

No!!!11!1!!1!1! The Bilderbergers are coming

LaMontagne in NH . . . by my lights, he’s fruitcake right. In the cough-cough years I’ve been involved with politics here (NH), this is the only guy I’ve found too conservative to support. Perfect counterpoint to denny the demented hobbit out there in Cleveland.

Logic in the mind of a liberal is like a snowflake in the desert: lost, alone and soon destroyed by a hostile environment.

Bennett and Hatch both support earmarks according to recent articles where they both reprimanding Jason Chaffetz from their own state for not wanting to use them. Bennett is up for election and knows that he will loose because of his earmarking, supporting the bail out and supporting an Obama care like health care. We don’t need anymore job losses nationwide. We don’t need more government jobs created. We need the constitution followed. We are recycling here in Utah and feel the rest of the country will too. We are recycling all incumbents. First Bennett then Hatch.

Disappointed Portman in Ohio doesn't make your list

I’m really curious why. Do you know something about him that I don’t?

“We sleep soundly in our beds only because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon those who would do us harm Dear Leader Obama gives us leave to do so.”

Why am I not surprised that most of those Senators listed are appropriators?

9 of the 15.

There’s going to mad dash in the 112th for a spot on Appropriations with retirements from Bond, Gregg, Voinovich, Brownback (and hopefully exits from Hutchinson and Bennett).

We’ll probably get more of the same, but if we were ever going to get serious about earmark reform, this wouldn’t be the worst time to get the wheels turning.

Would not take too much turnover

to render these guys back benchers. What are these RINOs going to do with the likelihood of a 50-50 split or thereabouts come November, caucus with the other party? Mitch McConnell is a leader like they had in Vichy France or ol’ Bob Michel, not a resistance fighter. He’ll be put out to pasture, too.

even though they represent a small percent of the budget

partyof1 Wednesday, March 17th at 1:42AM EST (link)

Earmarks are bad. Doesn’t matter the number of dollars they spend in relation to the whole budget.

In another RS post just now, a debate is raging over past Republican use of the “deems to pass” Slaughter Rule. But that was only for little stuff. Sound familiar? Now “deems to pass” has grown into a monster that threatens to swallow the Republic with one gulp because Dems want to use it for Obamacare. Would anyone have guessed that Dems would use arcane parliamentary gymnastics to pass mega-legislation that totally reshapes America overnight, in violation of every poll and Obama’s own campaign promises (individual mandates, transparency)? Insanity! Yet here we are with Dems embracing insanity.

And as pointed out by other commenters, earmarks also provide protection (vote buying) to congressmen who might otherwise have to stand or fall on their more substantive spending votes — that would be the other 99% of the budget.

Earmarks are bad.

Let’s go back to basics.

“Win every race” is my motto which means putting people through the primary who have a chance to win.

That’s Castle in Deleware (and probably Campbell in California) and probably whoever you’re not in favor of in New Hampshire.

Let’s keep people who can win in the Senate in favor of people who can’t win.

That having been said, I like most of your list of people to vote in and agree on the people from conservative states for the people we need to eventually replace: MS, OK, AL, TX, AK, TN for sure shoud have very conservative senators.

Adjoran (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 5:07AM EST (link)

Do we all have to publicly denounce them, too? Are their pictures and names to be excised from the history books and internet databases?

Do we charge their families for the bullets?

Yes Absolutely...Shame Shame On Them...

audax (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 6:02AM EST (link)

…Conservative-NOUNS must stand up and say NO to big Government. If there is an “earmark” there shouldn’t be an expenditure anyway, earmarked or not. Time to CUT the budget! Shame them and then shame them some more if they don’t stand up for Conservative-noun smaller government…and if shame doesn’t work, primary them.

some of them are good people, but they are old and have the DC disease. There is nothing wrong with a party wanting to change, particularly after continual heavy losses.

We are not the party of personalities, we are the party of ideas. And unless we change the DC dynamic, those poor souls you pine for will have many lucrative opportunities out of office.

OT Maine story...

mbecker908 (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 9:10AM EST (link)

Old downeaster lives on a farm where his great great grandfather was born near the NH border. One day a state surveyor knocks at his door and tells him the state is doing a routine survey so he may see people around for a couple of days. “Yep.” says the old fella.

A couple of weeks later there’s a knock on the door and the surveyor fella is back. The old man invites him in and the surveyor says, “I don’t know quite how to break this to you, knowing that your family has lived in Maine for generations, but it seems that when the original survey of this area was done several hundred years ago the surveyor was drunk, and well, the state line actually runs just to east of your property and you actually live in New Hampshire.”

The old man’s face broke into a huge grin, much to the surprise of the surveyor. “Thank God in heaven!” the old man said. “Don’t think I coulda stood another one of those harsh Maine winters!”

I works betta with the appropriate accents, but I’m sure you get the idea…

Just to say this about that...

Bill Wednesday, March 17th at 9:17AM EST (link)

Bond, Bunning, Gregg, Voinovich are already leaving. Hutchinson said she would be leaving, but I’m not holding my breath. Alexander, Bennett, Collins, Graham, Lugar and Snowe should be replaced. Maybe the others hopefully would get the message or leave too! Oh, don’t forget to urge a quick good bye to McConnell too. We need people with a real spine, gonads and CONVICTION to do the correct things to get the fiscal house in order. Oh, by the way, bye bye John McCain.

Thank God! November 3, 2010. U.S. House, GOP 290, DEM 145; U.S. Senate, GOP 70, DEM 28, IND 2. Keep on praying!

Inhofe? Really?

jeff_h_morris (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 10:17PM EST (link)

I love you fire-eaters here at Red State, but Inhofe?

Inhofe is a patriot. He does not care what the liberal media doyens think. He is leading the charge on cap and tax, and he is right to point out the illusion of cutting spending through eliminating Congressional earmarks. His expenditure rollback to 2008 levels would reduce spending, but this earmark moratorium is, at best, good political theater.

Inhofe’s conservatism ought to earn him some grace if you disagree with him, and gratitude if you do not.

This reminds me of the old joke about a Conservative firing squad. Step 1, form a circle…
