Following up on Moe, some detailed survey data is out this morning from 35 swing congressional districts around the country.
Things don’t look good for the Democrats. In those 35 swing districts, people really don’t want health care deform going through.
The poll was of 1,200 registered voters, which means likely voters will be even more amplified.
For 82% of those surveyed, the heath-care bill is either the top or one of the top three issues for deciding whom to support for Congress next November. (That number goes to 88% among independent women.) Sixty percent want Congress to start from scratch on a bipartisan health-care reform proposal or stop working on it this year. Majorities say the legislation will make them and their loved ones (53%), the economy (54%) and the U.S. health-care system (55%) worse off—quite the trifecta.
Seven in 10 would vote against a House member who votes for the Senate health-care bill with its special interest provisions. That includes 45% of self-identified Democrats, 72% of independents and 88% of Republicans. Three in four disagree that the federal government should mandate that everyone buy a government-approved insurance plan (64% strongly so), and 81% say any reform should focus first on reducing costs. Three quarters agree that Americans have the right to choose not to participate in any health-care system or plan without a penalty or fine.
When 45% of your own voters would oppose you for voting for the Senate plan, you are toast.

What?
REALITY!
Never heard of it.
Democrats...Are You Listening?
saul_anuzis (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 9:57AM EST (link)…if not, I think many will get their ears cleaned out (or clocks cleaned) in November.
This is BAD public policy…and bad POLITICS.
Share this info with your swing members!!!

I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents….James Madison

I called several Illinois congressmen
jyjacobs Monday, March 15th at 10:08AM EST (link)I called the D.C. offices of 3 Illinois congressmen (Bean, Halvorson, and Lipinski) this morning. I kept it quick and polite, and their office staff was polite. I was told by Lipinski’s office that they were keeping a tally of phone calls for/against. My own congressman is Mike Quigley who took over Rahm Emanuel’s seat. I had called him last year, but his ‘yes’ vote is in keeping with his constituents which are extremely liberal.
And the main difference
partyof1 Monday, March 15th at 10:09AM EST (link)between my plan and Senator Clinton’s plan is that she’d require the government to force you to buy health insurance and she said she’d ‘go after’ your wages if you don’t.

This is scary and it is nuclear
earlgrey (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 10:11AM EST (link)If they pass this, I don’t think anyone can really predict the fallout, but it could get really ugly.
The problem I see is 55% Dem support this
Greg (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 11:48AM EST (link)And they are the ones that chose these nuts at the primary. That is sufficient reason for House Dem’s to support the bill.
Kucinich is traveling with Obama today toi
earlgrey (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 12:05PM EST (link)A rally in Ohio. He had been a no vote. We’ll see how that changes . If it does than shouldn’t that be enough to prove this is a takeover of healthcare.
Already reiterated his "no".
LibertarianHawk (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 3:17PM EST (link)Kucinich almost certainly isn’t going to budge. Think of him like you think of Ralph Nader.

Both yes votes last time -- Chris Carney is now a no and Tom Periello is leaning no
RealQuiet (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 1:33PM EST (link)According to the Hill and National Review. They both say they cannot support a bill that publically funds abortion.
Clyburn says 4 former knows switched to yeas
earlgrey (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 2:23PM EST (link)Boccierri, Gordon, Baird and Altmire
Not surprising
RealQuiet (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 2:35PM EST (link)Gordon and Baird are retiring so they have nothing to lose. Altmire isn’t surprising either but he has ensured that he’ll be voted out in November. Bocceri I hadn’t heard a whole lot about. I think Kucinich will be a yes as well. Still, the passage for the bill doesn’t look good. Carney and Periello are big.
Kucinich is a firm "no."
LibertarianHawk (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 3:24PM EST (link)And I know that Brian Baird has made some public comments saying that nobody should count on any former “No” votes turning into “Yes” votes, simply because they came from people not running for reelection.
Oddly enough, though, I don’t agree with you that passage “doesn’t look good.”
The Dems and Obama have gone all in on this. They’ve made it known that failure of passage is not an option — even if it means having to flout the Constitution, break new ground in legislative procedure, leak information about ethics complaints, and surrendering seats.
They will stop at absolutely nothing to see to it this becomes law. They’ve paid a heavy political price to get things to this point….and there’s simply no way they’ll be going home empty-handed.
So, I’m generally of the mind that this sucker’s going to squeak through…..they wouldn’t have put things in motion if they weren’t already relatively certain it would succeed.
Where did you hear about carney and Periello?
earlgrey (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 3:40PM EST (link)I thought Altmire was a big swing voter, but he really sounded like he wanted to vote for this. I also heard Oberstar has left the Stupak coalition.
There is no possible way Perriello will ever vote no
Scope (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 4:45PM EST (link)Perriello is a bought and paid for (literally) George Soros footsoldier. Perriello has never voted against anything Pelosi asked him to vote for. Perriello’s Charlottesville office spokesperson, Jessica Barba recently made the statement that 88% of the calls they were receiving in that office were from people outside the district. She said that the people within the district were overwhelmingly for Obamacare.
Periello did the same thing with the Crap and Tax bill. People were calling his office and were being told that he had not yet made up his mind. Crap and Tax is Perriello’s big ticket goal. Anyone who knew that would have known he would never have voted against it.
Whatever Perriello, or his staff say, Perriello is a very very definate YES. Perriello bussed in SEIU people for his August townhalls because of all the push back he was getting in the district.
Perriello, a Catholic
Scope (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 4:54PM EST (link)will still vote for the bill. Perriello will justify his yes vote with the fact that he believes that the bill “is for the greater good.” He believes he will be forgiven, as long as everyone in society will have free healthcare. I have done much much research on Periello. He is a part of the Soros push to bring the Catholics, and all Christians into a socialistic mindset. Everyone is equal, and the government is responsible for the needs of the masses. Not everyone who is a Catholic is pro-life.
There are professing Catholics
Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 5:16PM EST (link)and there are professing cowards. Periello is the latter. Why Goode ever allowed him to steal that office I’ll never know, but Periello alos knows he’s gone in Nov. Maybe he thinks if he can’t be in Congress maybe Hell ain’t so bad, so long as he can destroy the people who threw him out of office.
Vassar- Really interesting perspective
Scope (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 7:50PM EST (link)The 2008 elections were all about “get out the vote” tactics. I don’t know if you remember all those votes that were found in a Danville poll workers trunk, the day after the election. I also remember some reporting problems where someone sent in their vote totals before they were totally counted. There were many reports as those. I think Goode knew he was up against a “machine” that would keep finding votes for Perriello whenever he seemed to lag behind. Perriello only won by 700 and something votes. Most believe that he won on Obamas coattails. I’m not sure that will happen again. The problem in the VA 5th district is that not any of the 7 candidates will back away, and, admit they have no chance. They are sucking money from the very few that may have a chance. It should have been a convention, rather than a primary. A primary only benefited one candidate, Robert Hurt. He unfortunately has the backing of the elites in Washington, most notably, Eric Cantor. Another Washington choosen.

Not true. You should have written: Not everyone who says they are Catholic is pro-life.
No one who is truly a faithful Catholic can be anything but pro-life. Anyone who thinks otherwise does not understand what the Church teaches.

Lammo- You are exactly right
Scope (Diary) Monday, March 15th at 7:36PM EST (link)Not everyone who “says” they are a Catholic is pro-life. Big difference. Examples- Perriello, Pelosi and Biden, off the top of my head. Oh, and Massa, but he has more problems than the pro-life issue.
